Icons gone after disk and permissions repair

I ran Onxy to clean my MBP and it told me I had to run disk utility from my Mac osx install disk and do disk repair and permissions before I could use it.
I did it, took about 5 minutes to complete, but now whenever I save something from photoshop the preview image of the icon is gone, there's no icon, just the name of the file. I went looking through finder and half of my preview icons are gone on pictures, pdf's etc.
The finder preference icons are gone too: http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb147/shdwslayer/Screenshot2010-10-20at75332P M.png
And here there are blank spaces where the icon is supposed to be, just the name of the file: http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb147/shdwslayer/Screenshot2010-10-20at75413P M.png
So my question is, is there any way to get the icons back and have saved files show the icon again? Or should I just use time machine to go back to yesterday?

I just restarted my computer, again, and the icons are back. Don't know where they went, but they're there now.

  • Time machine full backup after disk and disk permissions repair

my macbook would not boot so i inserted the snow leopard DVD and did a disk repair and disk permissions repair, after that it booted perfectly but when it went to do a backup it did a full backup of 149GB , i am unsure why it has done this and would like to know how to stop it as i am trying to save space on my time capsule.
    thank you in advance

I'm afraid you don't have much choice. You do have lot of space available, though.
    Node requires deep traversal:/ reason:must scan subdirs|new event db|
No pre-backup thinning needed: 165.92 GB requested (including padding), 507.60 GB available
The "deep traversal" means TM compared everything on your system to the backups, and estimates that about 138 GB is new/changed (it adds 20% for workspace on the TM disk - the "padding" in the message).
If there's about 138 GB on your system, see #D3 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum), for some common reasons for TM to do a new full backup.
If there's more, #D4 there has some common reasons for large backups.
If all you did was repair disk and permissions, neither should have resulted.
the reason i did a permission repair and disk repair while running from the install disk was because my laptop would not boot from the internal disk so i did both just to be safe.
That's fine; just do the Permissions Repair again, while running normally.

  • I've tried PRAM reset, repair disk and permissions but cannot boot up after recent install of OSX 8.4. Please help

After having to do a forced shut down (holding down power button) due to freezing I cannot again progress past the grey screen with the apple logo. The spinning cog comes on at first then disappears leaving just the apple logo (in case that is sognificant).
I have tried to find a solution through the support pages but have unfortunately been unsuccessful in my endeavours so do apologise I have overlooked the obvious and would really appreciate some help. I've just started the second year of my Uni and the timing couldn't be worse.
    I have tried the following:
    1) held down option and started in "recovery 10.8.4" from which I used disk utility to "repair disk", which at first needed some repairs and then I ran it again for the second time to confirm it had a clean bill of health.
    2) I then ran "repair disk permissions" and repeated a second time to confirm it was all working well (however one error remained "warning: SUID file "system/library/CoreS... has been modified and will not be repaired" but have read that this should not be a big problem) After which I tried to start up again and it hung with the apple logo on the grey screen.
    3) tried resetting the PRAM by holding down cmd+option+P+R before powering up, but it only chimes once and then restarts the mac, then chimes once and repeats the process again in and endless cycle.
    4) I then tried 1 and 2 again and then tried to reinstall OSX 10.8.4 from the recovery mode, but this came up with the message "an error occured while preparing the installation. Try running this application again" to which I followed but to no avail.
    5) I tried starting up in safe mode by holding down shift after the chime at startup but safe mode did not start after 3 hours. During which point I was drowning my frustration in the pub.
    6) I tried starting in verbose mode with cmd+V but after running the script it reverts back to the grey screen.
I have not tried booting from an install disk as im a few hours from home on a uni campus with no apple store in sught and all day lectures so no hope to visit far away stores. I hope I have explained it in enough detail and appreciate any direction or thoughts as to it being salvageable.  Failing which it might be time go go back to the pub and remember the importance of regular backups!
    Many thanks
    Stephen

I have one more development to add. In step "4" above I suspected that it could be something to with the Ethernet settings as I hadn't had the option of typing in the colleges wifi credentials. So I tried the "get help online" option to test it, managed to sign in and tried the step 4 again.
This time I received a different error message "could not find installation information for this machine".
    Thanks

  • Power Mac G5 won't start even after Repairing Disk and Permissions

I Repaired the Disk first by booting from the install disk and it did repair 1 item and then tried to reboot into safe mode to repair permissions and it didn't boot. I restarted by booting from the install disk again and repaired permissions and it seemed to repair alot of stuff. But it still won't start up.
I get stuck at the blue screen with the apple logo above a status bar that never moves.

  • DVD drive issue and permissions repair

Forgive me if I'm combining two issues in this posting.  If they are not related I can separate them out.
I don't know if my drive is going, but I have a DVD for a tv show that I wanted to watch on my Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard (latest patches).  For a while now I've had to keep reinserting the disc because it's not registering.  I put it in, and can hear mechanisms, then it spits it back out.
I watched one disc, ejected it then tried to play another and it just would not load.
I thought of checking disk permissions, thinking maybe the OS had some permissions problems that may be preventing it from reliably reading the disc.  The disk utility reported a number of permissions errors and owner errors, so I repaired the permissions and it reported that it was completed successfully.  I thought I'd run the verify permissions again, just to make sure the errors had really been repaired, and they're still there - some of them were gone, but there were others reported.  I ran the repair and verify a number of times now and nothing's changed.
    My questions:
    1.  Could the problem I'm seeing with my DVD drive be related to permissions of some of the system files?
    2.  Do I have anything to worry about with the disk permissions not appearing to be repaired?
    3.  Would I gain anything by booting to install media and running the verify and repair from there?
    Thanks much in advance!

Could the problem I'm seeing with my DVD drive be related to permissions of some of the system files?
If you've repaired permissions, and you still have the problem, then the answer is no.
Do I have anything to worry about with the disk permissions not appearing to be repaired?

  • Disk Utility-Permissions Repair doesn't seem to repair anything

I have recently installed Leopard, and so far I haven't had any serious issues. However, I used the 'Repair Permissions' function in Disk Utility today, and it doesn't seem to have repaired anything.
As a rule, I run 'Repair Permissions' two times in a row, just in case it missed anything the first time around. When I ran it a second time, everything that it had supposedly fixed on the first run was showing up the second time.
Is there any reason that permissions repair wouldn't be making the necessary changes? If so, how can I fix it. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thank you.

  • Cannot boot. volume disappeared from boot option after Disk Utility (GUI) repair

I have a 13-inch MBP with the latest OS X version.
    Problem
Yesterday, I went to the Recovery Mode and performed Repair on my boot volume. I was not having a problem, but I just wanted to verify and repair as a regular maintenance. The Disk Utility said some kind of error (I cannot remember, but something about EFI?), and I cannot start my computer since then (question mark folder icon when I try to boot).
    I have tried the following
I tried to recover the drive by going into the Recovery Mode, but when I press Option key for boot options, I just have an empty grey screen have no option(not even the recovery volume). I have also tried to enter into the Single User Mode, but it goes straight back to the question mark folder icon. Just in case, I performed PRAM and SMC reset, but still no dice.
Next, I tried to boot with Command+R pressed, and the computer went into Internet Recovery Mode, which works fine. Then, I went to the Disk Utility, and my SSD is on the list with the volume that has OS X(only volume on the entire disk except recovery volume, etc). I use FileVault2, and I can unlock the volume and mount it without any problem. When I do Verify Disk, it says that the volume appears to be OK. Also, performed fsck using Recovery Mode's Terminal, and it still says that "The volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK," the exact same message that I got from GUI disk utility. I also tried to unlock and set the volume as a start-up disk, but I still get the question mark folder icon.
If you need further details, please let me know! Please save me!

    Hello jukim,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
Great troubleshooting done so far.  Since you're still booting to the flashing question mark, even after repairing the disk, the next step would be to reinstall OS X.

  • Running Lion. Verified Disk. Warned HD corrupt, and need to restart from disk and run repair. No idea how to do this without a physical disk.

    Hi,
My MacBook Pro has been acting up a little. I tried the usual repair options: repair permissions, zap P-ram, and Safe Boot (although I've never gotten the machine to Safe Boot properly since installing Lion). I ran Verify Disk and it stopped part way through, saying that the HD is corrupt. It instructed me to start up from the (installation?) disk and run the repair function from the disk utility. (I've included a screen shot of the Verify Disk screen). I have no idea how to go about this without a physical start up disk (Lion). I do have the disks that came with the computer at the time of purchase (Will one of those work?).
    Thanks,
    JGW

    Thank you!
I was able to access the recovery function and used the Disk Utility to repair my HD.
Would you recommend that I still re-install Lion?
Again, thank you for taking the time to help me!
    Best wishes,
    JGW

  • Disk Utility Permissions Repair Running Slow

I often go into Disk Utility and Verify Permissions, Repair Permissions, Verify Disk and Repair Disk.
Usually takes 3-4 minutes per item.
    Now saying 9 hours.
    Any ideas?

It will quickly drop. I've had it start with 22 hours, but only ended up taking 6 or 7 minutes.
Just for your further interest there is no reason to "often" repair or verify permissions or the hard drive. These should only be done if a permissions error or disk error has been reported or as a precautionary prior to installing new system software or cloning or backing up a drive for the first time.

  • Disk Utility Permissions repair not showing details

I have a brand new imac 24. When I run repair Permissions, I get this
    Repairing permissions for “Macintosh HD”
    Permissions repair complete
It says "Estimated time less than 1 minute" which actua;ly takes a lot longer, seems to hang up at first.
However it is not going through the usual gobbldeegook you see in Tiger or Panther, Like thos pesky colorsync profiles etc.
Is this a system corruption or a bug in Leopards new Disk Utility? I used the Migration Utility to transfer some files from my G4.
I'm having serious issues with fonts not showing up in my APPS so I'm trying to resolve a huge problem thinking maybe Permissions are the reason.

    SparkyJ,
I was having that same issue with Repair Permissions, until I just started the process and let it go. It hung for several minutes before the process bar began to show activity. I have no idea why this is now happening, but Permissions are eventually getting repaired.

  • Yosemite showing old icons for Hard Disks and Disk images

    Hey all,
I'm running OS X Yosemite, all fully up to date, based on an upgrade install from Mavericks. Everything's basically fine, with the exception that any sort of disk icon (Internal, USB, Disk Images etc) all still use the old Mavericks style icons.
Not a major issue but kind of irritating me at the minute, I could go through and manually change them but I still get the old ones appear when a new disk connects.
This behaviour is exclusive to my user account as when I set up a second user to investigate all icons were the new 'flat' style.
Has anyone come across this, and if so did you find a resolution?

Mine look the same.  Were they suppose to change?

    Permissions repair complete
Consecutive running of repair produces same result - so, clearly NONE of the "repairs" have actually been "repaired!" Also, anyone know what the heck the LAST ENTRY means? I CERTAINLY HAVE NOT REPAIRED AN SUID FILE!!

Apple says to ignore this. It is a known issue.

  • Macbook will not start after sharing and permissions error

I was cleaning around my files and went into the info of my Mac.
I clicked get info on the desktop icon and accidently messed up the sharing and permissions settings.
My computer would not let me into my Mac icon on my desktop, saying I didn't have certain permissions.
I tried restarting and now my Macbook will not startup. It turns on and loads, but never goes past that.
I removed the battery and placed it back in but it is not working still.
    Thanks for the help guys!

  • Itunes and quicktime icons gone after update

    hi
my friend and i both just recently updated our itunes to the latest and greatest version.
now niether of us have icons for either prog.
the are like a blank icon, just not the correct icon.
sometimes when i click on the programs the icon appears but then goes away, and this is happening to my friend as well.
anyone else having this issue ?
    thanks
