Icons in Dock Open Folders

Have this reoccurring problem that when an icon in the dock is clicked it open a folder showing it's location instead of a opening the app.
A reboot will fix it, but it is getting annoying. Any idea what may be going on?
Thanks,
Carl

Try this:
Move the following from Library/Preferences in your Home folder to your Desktop:
com.apple.dock.db
com.apple.dock.plist
Reboot and test
Good luck

  • HD And Home Icon In Dock Opens To Display  Blue Folders. How To Customise?

Whenever I click on my HD or Home icons in the Dock they open to display boring Blue-grey folders.
A few days ago I changed the icons on 4 of the original folders to something more colourful and meaningful but the original blue icons were still displayed when I opened my Home Folder.
Today, by some miracle, the new icons have appeared!
Either I have done something accidentally which has revealed them or there is a time-delay before activation!
Could somebody please explain, as I want to replace some more.
This shows the new icons that appeared several days later:-

I think I have figured it out.
If I make a new folder on the Desktop and put it into my User folder, it will display the icon.
However, if the plain folder is in my User folder already, and I change its appearance, it will not show the new icon when opened from the Dock.
To make it work, I must drag the folder from the User folder onto the Desktop and change the icon. Then replace it.
However, I am sure I didn't do anything like that with the 4 folders in the picture and they seemed to change by themselves after a few days.
    Very Strange!
If anyone can explain things better than my rambling description please feel free to do so.

  • I click on icon in dock- opens the applications folder

When I click on an icon in the dock and get the applications folder instead.
Seems a bit odd, never had this happen before.
Doing a scan at the moment with ClamXav, to see if there's any weird's hanging about..

    All icons?
Try doing a Dock restart using the following Terminal command:
    killall Dock
Log out/in and test. If that doesn’t work, you need to look in your user Library/Applications Support/Dock for the .db. Use the Finder “Go To Folder” command. Enter ~/Library/Applications Support/Dock.  Move the .db to your desktop.
    Then try a dock reset.
    Applications/Utilities/Terminal enter the command
    killall Dock
Log out/in test. If it works okay, delete the .db from the desktop.
If the Dock is the same, return the .db to where you got them from, overwriting the newer ones.
If you prefer to make your user library permanently visible, go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Learned from leonie.

  • Some files in "DOCUMENTS" icon in dock won't open. Get msg saying You need a newer version of Pages to open this document." Have Pages 4.1 installed.  Same files will open ok from Finder, Pages App. Recently sync'd with ipad2 (Pages) after iOS5 installed.

Some files in "DOCUMENTS" icon in dock won't open. Get msg saying "You need a newer version of Pages to open this document." Already have Pages 4.1 installed.  Same files will open ok from Finder/Pages App./selected file. Prob not noted until recently after sync'd with ipad2 (Pages) when I installed iOS5. Anyone-- please?!

You have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.
Pages 5.2 is in your Applications folder.
Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
You are alternately opening the wrong versions.
Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5.2 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
Older versions of Pages 5 can not open files from later versions of Pages 5.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
Anything that is saved to iCloud and opened in a newer version of Pages is also converted to Pages 5 files.
All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
Apple has removed almost 100 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:

  • My desktop icons won't open but I can open them from the finder thru the dock; how can I fix this? I run 10.5.1

I run 10.5.1 and I have been getting a blue screen on boot that takes forever before the screen icons pop up...then I can't open them by clicking on them even though I can do so thru the finder in the dock. Any ideas how to fix? I dumped a bunch of stuff my boot drive to free up space...I have aropund 130 out of 160 gig that's available.

Go to your Applications folder where you have installed these applications that will not open. Right-click, or two-finger tap (if enabled) the application icon. Choose open, and the application will launch. This is a one-time deal, as afterwards, that specific application will launch normally.
This is an Apple security mechanism. You can override this in System Preferences > General: Allow apps downloaded from: Anywhere. However, it is not set to Anywhere to protect you, and even I do not leave Anywhere permanently enabled. Only for those apps that I know are not in the App Store, and already know have this open behavior.

If you found Safari in the Trash it was probably the Safari.app itself. Icons on the Dock do not go into Trash. They drag off and "Poof".
That means that the app, itself is on your Desktop. Choose it and Get Info (command-i). Does it say, "Safari.app"? Drag it back into /Applications folder. Then drag your icon off the Dock and create a new one by dragging Safari.app to the Dock. It will create an alias which is all the Dock icons are.
The question mark means an alias has lost the path to the application. Have your other users drag it off the Dock and drag it from the applications folder to create a new alias on the Dock.

It's strange. The problem apparently resolved itself after I ran TechTool on it. When I clicked on Firefox last night, I had no problem opening a window. Thanks for your help. (As to your previous post, the focus was on Firefox and neither the speed keys nor the menu bar would open a window or tab of allow me to enter a URL to open a window. Strange!)

  • Mac attempting to open folders with the Icon Composer application

When opening a folder from anything other than a finder window(like the "Open In Finder" button in a stack or by clicking the preview icon in the Get Info box) my Mac attempts to open the folder with the Icon Composer application. Of corse this produces an error saying the Icon Composer cannot open files of this type. It is like the "Open With" setting got messed up somehow though there is no "open with" option for a folder that I can find. It does not matter whether the Icon Composer is running or not though this issue did not start until after I ran the application for the first time.
I have tried renaming the finder's .plist file and the finder's settings seem reset but the problem persists. If it were a problem with the Dock it would not persist within other apps(including the Get Info window right?
    Any advice?

never see this one. try resetting launch services. delete the file /users/username/library/preferences/com.apple.launchservices.plist and try this again.

  • System prefrences icon in dock does not open

    Hello
The system prefrences icon in dock, when i click on it ,does not open and deos not jump up and down ,like the other icons. In fact i can not open the sys.pref. in any other place either. The only way i can open it up ,is ,if i restart the computer and then when i click on it , it will spring jump and then open.
Deos anybody know what is wrong with it and how i can fix it.Thanks.

    Hello mike:
    Try this:
Drag the system preference icon off the dock. Then drag the system preferences icon from your application folder to the dock.
If this does not help, drag a preference file (com.apple.systempreferences.plist) to the trash and restart.

I have real a lot of posts that say to click Command+Option while opening iPhoto and this will open the Photo Library Repair window, but... this is not happening.
Be sure you're holding the correct keys and that you're holding them long enough. Depress them before clicking on iPhoto and don't let go until the menu shows up.
If you don't want to lose those photos, make a back up now. Hopefully it's not too late.

  • Picture folder stack icons in the dock become folders after viewing

    Hi Everyone
I have been using img2icon to make new icons for the document folders I keep in the stacks. I have changed the stacks settings to folders to show the icon. It looks good but when I view the stack and then put them down again, the icons go and are replaced by the folder icons.
Also wondering if anyone knows how to replace application icons in the dock?
    Thank U
    Stuart

I had a similar "issue"...a simple restart solved it.

  • IMac Won't Allow Me To Install Applications Or Even Open Folders

I have an iMac Intel Core Duo 2.33 GHz, with 2GB of Ram running 10.5.4.
When I booted my Mac last week I noticed a brown area on my screen. After the machine booted I could only open the applications that were in my dock or do a search for them through Spotlight and start the application from there, since it took many clicks to get to my Applications directory to open after clicking GO in the menu bar.
Even after the Applications directory opened (which took forever) I was unable to click on ANY of the applications and scrolling was extremely slow or not at all. I also had to Refresh the Finder just to get it to show up at the top of my screen or close the Application window.
I took the machine in for repair and they replaced the screen and told me that not being able to open folders, go to the Application folder or ANY folder was a software issue and not a hardware issue. They recommended I remove EVERYTHING in my Startup Login Options when I got home and that would fix the problem, it did not - I removed all 4 applications in the startup and nothing changed.
I rarely install applications, but I faithfully repair permissions at least daily and I have installed all of the latest updates Apple released in the last 2 weeks.
Thing I have done so far
    1. Repaired Permissions
    2. Verified The Disk
    3. Reinstalled Leopard And All The Updates
    4. Run Most of the options built into Onyx, Maintenance and Mac Pilot, since I have them already installed.
Nothing has made a difference, I am still unable to run anything in my applications directory, open ANY folder on my desktop or any other directory, drag an icon to my applications folder or drag a folder or icon on my desktop.
The only things I can do is run what few applications I have in my Dock and search for Applications using Spotlight and run them from there. They come up quickly and run just fine once they come up.
Any help or suggestions someone could provide would be greatly appreciated! Thank you very much for your time!
    Randy

Repairing permission daily is a complete waste of time and will not help you. In fact, repairing the disk permissions needs to only be done about 2-3 times a year at best.
You say you verified the disk but did you repair it? Did you get a message that the "disk appears to be o.k."? What kind of install did you do? My guess is you did an archive and install.
Onyx is a troubleshooting tool and should not be used on a regular basis for anything. Caches do not need to be cleaned on a regular basis and everything else Onyx and similar utilities claim to do are handled by the system automatically. Do not use these utilities unless you are having a problem.
My guess is you have a serious problem with file corruption.
Have you tried creating a new account? Try that and see if the problem follows to the new account or not.

  • Finder suddenly started opening folders in their own window

    Hi everyone,
I'm wondering if anyone knows what might cause Finder to suddenly start opening folders in their own window even though the Finder preference to do that is unchecked? Before this started happening, all folders would open in the same window (the default behavior).
This happens whether I have my external keyboard plugged in or not and I've verified that the Command, ALT & Control keys are not stuck in any way on both the MBP keyboard and the external keyboard. I've also shutdown the MBP and restarted just to be sure.
Ideas? Is there a command line setting that I should look at or some config file that would tell me if it's incorrectly set?
    Rey...

    Two things to try:
    1) check the box in Finder > Preferences > General tab, then relaunch Finder, then go back and UNcheck that box, and relaunch Finder again (to relaunch Finder, hold the option key and click-and-hold the Finder icon in the dock, then select Relaunch, or use Apple menu > Force Quit)
    2) trash the file ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist, then restart (the OS will recreate the plist file; sometimes they become corrupt)

  • Can't Open Folders

    Using Leopard 10.5.2
When I try to open a folder, any folder, including the hard drive, the ipod, folders on the desktop, etc. this happens:
1st -- a window opens. In some cases I see the contents of the folder in it, but usually it looks completely empty.
2nd -- after about 1 second the window disappears and everything on the desktop including the hard drive image also disappears.
3rd -- after about 1 second everything on the desktop reappears, complete with the hard drive and other folders. They are all closed.
Spotlight can find folders within folders, and files within folders. Applications can be opened from spotlight or the dock, but not from any folder, such as the applications folder. Some folders can be opened from Recent on the apple menu, but others can't.
I spent a couple hours on the phone to Apple yesterday and they first had me create an account for a phantom user. Logged off as myself, and logged on as the phantom user, and did not have this problem with that account. New problem being: can't access any of my files, because they're all associated with the original user account.
Next we did some complicated stuff to get access to my desktop folder from a new super-administrator account and moved my desktop into the "shared" folder. Went back to my account, and now everything that was on my desktop has disappeared and I still can't open any folders, so I can't get anything that was on the desktop for that account back.
Next we reinstalled the system software using the install and archive option.
This was also a giant step backwards, because it installed 10.5.1 and reset preferences etc back to the defaults but it did not affect the folder bug. So then I ran software update and installed 10.5.2 and now I'm up to about 10 hours of trying to make things work and have only succeeded in making things worse.

Hi I exactly have the same problem . I remarked it noon on my G5, Leopard 10.5.2.
I have 2 Internal Hard Drive.
On the primary one, i have the same symptoms : i could not open folders. Everything stops and restarts. Sometimes it even happens after several clicks in teh lateral bar of the Finder
On the Second internal Hard Drive everything is OK
I thought about rights.. i launched some maintenance & cleanup scripts using ONYX, then reboot... it 's the same.
It's so strange : i reinstalled Leopard from scratch two weeks ago >
I launched backups with Time Machine + Capsule
    Recently i installed iLife.
It seems, that after install of Leopard everything was ok.
Recently, one of my update (iDVD) failed. And Safari.
This problems come from my RAM i think :
When i reinstalled Leopard, i should unplug all my upgraded non-Apple RAM.
