Icons in Mail inbox window disappear.

Using 10.5.5 on a 2.8 8 core. Recently when I open the inbox in mail I see that I have lost the icons from the top of the window, the ones that would appear over Delete, junk, Reply, Reply all, Forward etc. They still function by clicking on the printed word and when the next screen appears icons are back.(in the new screen) It only occurs in the inbox window. What I have tried is to no avail. Rebooting, repairing permissions, running disk utility repair from another drive, disk warrior rebuild. Nothing seems to help. I even tossed Mail app and replaced with a working Mail app from another internal. No luck. Next step would be to reinstall 10.5 (original instal disk) but don't want to have to go through that hassle updating and loosing a couple of weeks of emails.. Is there aa way to just reinstall Mail? Any ideas appreciated.

Hmmm… I went to school with somebody with a first name starting with D and last name of Balke; may I ask what city you're in?

No, that's not the next step; way too drastic and huge time-waster. We need to find the problem and fix that instead, since the application is rarely the problem.
Did you install anything just before you noticed this problem, and if so, what exactly was it? Have you tried choosing View > Customize Toolbar… and restoring the default set of icons to see if that will fix the problem? If not, do that, then quit Mail and restart it to see if your changes stick and it works reliably.

  • Can't Get Mail Inbox Window Back

I'm posting this for a co-worker....she pushed the Mail Inbox window all the way to the right and up and now she can't get it back. She's restarted but still nothing is bringing it back. Also played with the resolution and it's at the maximum, so there's no making it bigger. Any suggestions would be great...thanks! She has a G4 and is running Panther.
    G4   Mac OS X (10.3.8)
mac mini   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Those settings are stored in the preferences file. If you cannot figure out how to solve the problem in Mail, you may try re-creating that file:
    1. If you have a .Mac account and .Mac synchronization of Mail data is enabled either in Mail > Preferences > General or in System Preferences > .Mac, disable it before proceeding.
    2. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    3. Make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder, just in case something goes wrong while trying to solve the problem. You can do this in the Finder by dragging the folder to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down, for example. This is where all your mail is stored.
    4. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Preferences/. Locate com.apple.mail.plist and move it to the Desktop (to be deleted if this fixes the problem).
    5. Open Mail. You’ll have to set up your non-.Mac accounts from scratch all over again. If given the option to import existing mailboxes or something like that, don’t. Just enter the account information and Mail will automagically rediscover the data in ~/Library/Mail/ when done.
You’ll also have to re-configure most of your settings in Mail > Preferences. For spam-related security reasons, the first thing you should do is go to Preferences > Viewing and disable Display remote images in HTML messages if it’s enabled.
You may also need to re-install or re-enable any Mail plug-ins you have installed for Mail to recognize them.
    6. As a side effect of re-creating com.apple.mail.plist, Mail might rename Outbox (which is where messages waiting to be sent are stored) to Delivered. The name of that mailbox is actually a misnomer, as it would contain messages (if any) that couldn’t be delivered for some reason. You can delete that mailbox if you wish.
    7. If the problem is fixed now and .Mac synchronization of Mail data was enabled at the beginning, enable it again, go to System Preferences > .Mac > Advanced, click Reset Sync Data, and choose the appropriate options to reset the Mail data stored on the .Mac server with the data locally stored on the computer, i.e. sync data must flow from the computer to the .Mac server.
BTW, if the system in question is Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther), it would have been more appropriate to discuss this in the Mail & Address Book - Mac OS X 10.3 & earlier forum. If the discussion applies to both Mail 1.x and Mail 2.x, it doesn’t really matter, but it’s difficult to know that in advance.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the folder path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the folder path there.

  • What are the two little arrows in the mail Inbox window

In the OS7 Mail Inbox window, along the top of the message section with from and date and subject, there is a little box with two opposing arrows.  What is this for?

If this is the one you're referring to, clicking it makes mail go full screen.

  • Mail messages window disappear when searching

    Hello,
I'm using Mail 8.0 on OS X 10.10 (14A389). With French language and localisation. This is something I already noticed in Public Beta.
I have my Sent folder selected (maybe it would happen with another). I start typing something in the search box. Then the whole main messages window disappear immediately. But Mail thinks it's still visible. Even search suggestions continues to show. Typing cmd+0 to hide/show the messages window does not help.
I have to restart Mail to get my messages window back.
This happens randomly. After restarting Mail I can search as usual without the window disappearing. But sometimes later it will happen again.
Anyone encounters this too? Is this known from Apple? Any better temporary workaround than restarting Mail?

It still happens and it really gets boring. I have Mail 8.0 (1990.1). It happens from any folder selected: Inbox, Sent, Smart Inboxes...
How could such a bug remain undetected and not fixed asap? Maybe it's a plot from Apple to get us to ditch Mail and instead buy Unibox, Sparrow or Airmail from the Mac App Store so they get more $$$ commissions?

  • The reading pane Mail inbox has disappeared; what's the fix?

The reading pane of my Mail "inbox" has disaappeard; what's the fix?

This indicates the account's Inbox mailbox has an "overstuffed" mailbox issue which means the mailbox has some corruption.
All email clients have limits and although an "overstuffed" mailbox issue can occur at any mailbox size, it is more likely to occur depending on the number and size of message attachments contained in a mailbox and especially as a mailbox approaches or exceeds 1 GB in size for Jaguar/Panther Mail and 2 GB in size for Tiger Mail.
Since an account's Inbox mailbox is usually the most active mailbox, it is not a good idea to use an account's Inbox mailbox as the final storage location for all messages received that are not deleted. You can/should utilize user created "On My Mac" mailboxes to sort received messages by category that you need to save. This can be done by creating rules to automatically sort received messages to user created mailboxes by category or transferring messages manually.
That being said, quit the Mail.app first and using the Finder go to Home > Library > Mail > this account named folder (named by the user name and incoming mail server for the account) > INBOX.mbox.
This should be for the account named folder within the original Mail folder at Home > Library > Mail, not from the backup.
Move the INBOX.mbox to the Desktop.
When re-launching Mail, a new (and empty) INBOX.mbox will be created automatically by Mail within the account named folder when receiving the next message with this account. This will allow the Mail.app to function properly again and not risk losing any new messages received while working on the old INBOX.mbox moved to the Desktop.
Control-click on the old INBOX.mbox moved to the Desktop and at the menu window that appears, select Show Package Contents.
List the package content file names and size of each here.
This information is required to determine the next step to take to recover all messages contained in the mailbox.

  • Symbol-Icon on Mail Inbox

I posted this question earlier, but feel that I should try it again as the icon-symbol (see below) on my Mail Inbox, since I downloaded ML, is now appearing frequently. No one at Apple has recognized this icon. Several Community members have offered their advice (which I have appreciated very much), but now I am wondered if anyone else in the Community might recognize this symbol-icon, and what it might mean:
    Again, many thanks to all.

Mende1 and captfred, thanks again for your replies. I now see that the password for the new iCloud account is not present with that account (only for my server). So I've added the iCloud password, and hope that that solves the matter. So far, it has!

  • Apple mail    fonts window disappears   Mavericks

    I am using OSX 10.9.5    ...., Apple Mail   version 7.3  1878.6
I usually leave the Fonts window open.   In the last month it has started disappearing without me requesting that it disappear.
    Any suggestions ?
    Gus in Denver    aka 99guspuppet

It's been a while since I used Mavericks, but I believe in the New Message window, there is an icon at the bottom left of a new message window which allows you to customized the fields. Once open, there should be a box there to show or hide the signature field. If not, try right clicking on it for a customize window.
Mail (Mavericks): Customize a message header
When you write a message, choose which fields to include in the header.
In the New Message window, click the Customize pop-up menu (it has horizontal lines on it) in the lower-left corner of the header area, then choose Customize.
Select the items to include, then click OK.Some items are shown only when they’re valid. For example, the Signature checkbox appears only if you have a signature.

  • MBA lion Mail issue: window disappears randomly

    hello:
Having some MBA 13' mail issues:
    1) mail window will disappear (only using cmd+0 shortcut will bring it back - or going to window>message viewer) randomly without any reason
    2) starting up a new email or new note then closing this note or email will close the entire message viewer window...why?
    3) emails deleted within the 'inbox' section will not delete in the Gmail section (setup as IMAP, with Gmail defaults)
I am a little concerned with 1 & 2 becuase these are huge user experience issues, it is the most frustrating thing to have to continually use the short cut to open up a window which should not have disappeared in the first place!!
any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance!

    Hi Fred
I've got the same issue. It seems to happen randomly but so annoying when it does. Upgrading to Mountain Lion hasn't helped and I've changed my keyboard and reset all the short-cuts to the default settings and still it happens in Mail and Microsoft Outlook for Mac when I'm typing a mail.
    Did you find a solution?

  • Apple Mail inbox message disappear after a week

I have a brand new iMac running 10.8.2.  I am using the Apple Mail program to view emails from an AT&T DSL account.
The emails just disappear after a certian time and I can not find any setting for this in preferences (note this is not deleted e-mail, but rather all email in my inbox)  As of 4/3, the oldest email is dated 3/27 in my inbox.
The emails are on the AT&T server still, and my old iMac is also receiving them and not removing them.
How do I change this please?

    Quit Mail.
Back up all data. That means you know you can restore the Mail database, no matter what happens.
Triple-click the text on the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/Envelope Index
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens (command-V), then press return.
A Finder window will open with a file selected. Move the selected file to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Other files in the folder may have names that begin with "Envelope Index". Move those files, if any, to the Trash. Relaunch Mail. It should prompt you to re-import your messages. You may get a warning that the index is corrupt and that Mail has to quit. Click OK.
Test. If Mail now works as expected, you can delete the file you moved to the Desktop. If you get a warning that the file is in use when you try to empty the Trash, log out and log back in.

  • Mail inbox messages disappear with gmail IMAP

I've just set up an IMAP connection to my gmail account in Mail and after reading a message in my inbox, the message disappears from my inbox and I can only find the email in All Mail.
Looking in gmail, the gmail inbox still contains all of the emails that should be in it, so I know that gmail isn't filtering or archiving read emails. Additionally, on my phone my inbox shows properly so I know that my problem lies with Mail itself.
I have deleted all my rules from Mail, so I know no filtering is going on at the Mail level either.
If anybody could please help me out...
    Thanks,
    Shawn

  • Mail Windows disappear

I have a problem on my Macbook Pro where the Mail windows disappear.  Mail shows as active, and the header is visible, but I can not access any Mail window.  If I click on "show all windows" from the Dock; it shows me 5 windows right now, but I can not access any of them.  If I click on actions from the header; for example, new message, nothing appears on screen, but if I then click on "Show all Windows", it is visible, but not accessible.  The only way I have found to resolve this issue is to close and restart Mail.  Your suggestions are appreciated.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on some Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)

"One of the benefits of Match, right?  Saving hard drive space."
I would not use iTunes Match as a backup. There are too many bugs and I don't think that's what they intended it to be anyway. The main advantage of using it is to make your music available on OTHER devices, not to replace the music on your original computer.
