Icons in open dialog

I used to be able to control the size of the icons in an open dialog, for instance Preview, by changing the icon size in finder window for the directory I was looking at. This doesn't seem work in Lion. Any suggestions.

..."I somehow regret that it's not possible to simply edit com.apple.sidebarlists.plist with a text editor and correct the glitch instead of having to delete it as a whole."...
The default ".plist" format was changed from plain text xml to binary as of 10.4 for performance reasons - apparently binary format loads more quickly. They can still be edited using eg. "Propery List Editor.app" (XCode Tools required), or 'PlistBuddy' (copies can sometimes be found left over in "/Library/Receipts". The structure of this particular file does not make it amenable to editing with the 'defaults command' which can be useful for modifying other ".plist" files.
However, binary ".plist" files can be converted to XML format using the 'plutil' command, eg. using "/Applications" > "Utilities" > "Terminal.app":<pre>plutil -convert xml1 ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
open -e ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.sidebarlists.plist</pre>But often, when glitches like this occur, the cause might be corruption of the file and it might not be readily apparent where the problem is so it is often easier just to delete the whole thing...

  • Any way to see ICONS in Open and Close Dialog boxes?

Is there any way to see ICONS in Open and Close Dialog boxes, instead of just lists of items names?
I know you can preview one at a time, but I'd love to see all my artwork as picture icons, just as you can in a finder window.
Windows does this, but not OSX that I know of. Is there a third party app that enables you to see icon view in the Open and Close Dialogs?

Thank you Steve Jobs. I guess that feature has been added in Leopard. Now there really is nothing that I'll miss from Windoze.

  • Small Icon sizes in Open Dialog Box

When I upgraded from Snow Leapard to Lion I was very impressed that the icon sizes in the File->Open dialog boxes varied in size (per folder) on how you viewed them in Finder. For example, I would set my Finder Pictures folders and contents to a larger icon size to see them easier, then when I would open Photoshop and use the File->Open menu option, the icons would be the same size as how I viewed them in Finder.  It was beneficial to have a larger icon to view pictures when I would use File-> Open in Photoshop to select a photo. Since I have upgraded to Mountain Lion, it seems this feature has gone away?? It went back to the way it was with Snow Leapard. All icons are really small no matter how you view them in Finder.
Is there a way to change the icon sizes in the Open/Save dialog boxes to be larger in Mountain Lion? Possibly using the command prompt? Please help?!

I've used the Quicklook to get a larger image, but it's still not as convenient as it used to be with Lion. I'm confused on why the change was made to go back to small icons as a default?  When using Lion, you could have the icon size whatever you wanted.

  • Smart Folders show icons only in Open Dialog pane

    Hi,
I have created a couple of Smart Folders and put them in the side bar. When i select the Smart Folder, it shows the files and their preview icons. When i access the same Smart Folder in an Open Dialog pane from Keynote or another application, it shows regular file icons only, not the preview icons.
Is this how it is supposed to work?

While I'm not quite sure what you mean, it sounds to me like you had the Open dialog set for Column view, and at some point changed it to List view. Take a look at the toolbar at the top of the Open dialog window, you should see the back/forward buttons, then a group of three icons representing icon, list and column view. Both icon view and column view will show a preview icon of the selected file. Personally, I like icon view, since you see all the files that fit in the window with custom thumbs, and can pick what you want quickly. If you change the setting, in say Safari, to list view (which makes more sense in Safari), then the Open dialog for, say, TextEdit gets changed too. Just change it back by clicking the little icon in the toolbar at the top of the Open window.

  • Tiny open dialog icons in Photoshop

I recently migrated from PC to Mac and although I love the conversion, there is one thing that I'm hoping there is a solution for: I work in Photoshop extensively and when I have the Open dialog box open, my thumbnails are very small. I don't see any way to make them bigger.
Sometimes I want to take a quick look at a couple dozen similar thumbnails at a glance (without having to press the spacebar for a one-at-a-time Quick View, or using one of the alternate dialog box views which also only show one at a time.)
Is anyone aware of how I can fix this in Mavericks, or if there is a plug-in available that will allow application open dialogs to default to whatever size I have my Finder icon size set at?
Thanks so much for any input!!

Instead of using Opem,  you can use "Browse in Bridge"  This will open Adobe Bridge wich works a lot better for what you want to do.

  • 2 "Deskop" icons on my "Open" dialog box

    Hi all,
i don't remember what i did to cause the problem.. it appears that there are 2 "Desktop" icons on my "Open" dialog box when i try to open a file in a software (e.g. open up a web page in Safari). one of the "Desktop" icons is linking to my desktop; while the other one doesn't link to anywhere.... please have a look at the following image...
    http://kwok.50webs.com/Untitled-1.gif
i've tried to open up something with other softwares like Quicktime and textedit, but the problem was still there.... is there a way to remove the second "Desktop" icon from the dialog box?
    thx in advance..
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hi k w o k,
Your link gives me a "403 Forbidden" in Safari.
But I don't need the picture, your words are descriptive enough. Try this:
    1. Drag all Desktop icons off your Finder sidebar.
    2. In Finder >> Preferences >> Sidebar UNcheck all options.
    3. navigate to ~(yourHome)/Library/Preferences and trash these two files:
    com.apple.finder.plist
    com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
Then log out and back in again. Or restart.
(You will have to reset a few finder prefs the way you like them.)

  • Thumbnails in "OPEN" dialog box too small to see!

The thumbnails are  too small in the open dialog box so that I can't see the file I want to open.  Yes, you can make them bigger in finder itself...but I am always opening pictures and I just can't see them!
Almost as frustrating as the column issue.   The name column is very very wide when I try to open a file.. so I can't sort by the other columns without dragging over the bar at the bottom of the screen.  THis is so so frustrating.  I resize but it doesn't stick to the next session.
Apple invented the finder.  Why is it so inferior to windows explorer?

The only solution to enlarging the icons in an application open dialog window is to use the Accessibility panel in System Preferences. Under Zoom, enable Use keyboard shortcuts to zoom.
The first time you have an application open dialog, you press the keys: option + command + =  as many times as you want to zoom in. This will enlarge the open dialog window and its contents. When done, press option + command + 8 to restore normal window size. Subsequently, you can alternatively press option + command + 8 to zoom to the previous setting, or return to normal zoom.
This is as good as it is going to get. The applications (not just Apple’s) only use a subset of Finder’s settings in the open dialogs, and these do not include icon enlargement settings, which as you realize, are part of the actual Finder’s settings. The application development frameworks, and not Finder, are remiss in not providing icon size adjustments in open dialog windows.
You can provide feedback to Apple regarding OS X.

  • Open dialog box prefs for geany and gnumeric

I did a reinstall so that /usr/ would no longer have its own partition.   Rearranging the partitions was just going to take too long.
I use geany and gnumeric.  File -> Open, in either program, brings up the open dialog box.  It is titled Select a file for gnumeric and Open File for geany.
Since the reinstall, I have to click the pad and pencil icon in the top left every time to open up the line for manual entry of the location.
I am sure it used to remember its state before the reinstall.  Does anyone know where that setting is saved or how to get that functionality back?  Thanks.

if i understand correctly you have a note item (based on table) on every child record? when you open the dialog box: how do you put data from notes to dialog box? in the same way as you can write it back ...

  • Missing preview pane in Open dialog box

Recently, the preview pane doesn't show in any file open dialog boxes. For instance, when viewing the list of files in the open dialog box I was previously able to single click on a file and to the right, I would see a preview of the file as well as some basic info. Now, that pane is gone. What's particularly vexing is that this is happening on both my MacBook and my MacBook Pro. On the MBP, I was running 10.6.2 and I ran Software update yesterday to 10.6.3 in an effort to fix it, but the problem is still there.

While I'm not quite sure what you mean, it sounds to me like you had the Open dialog set for Column view, and at some point changed it to List view. • Save/Open dialog crashes on opening a folder which contains multiple app. alias

    Hi:
This is my first post in Apple forum, I've been searching some pages here, obviously I'm not the only one having this (or similar) problem but all existing threads are suggesting "Safe Mode" or "Disk Util" these useless things and never worked for me.
I believe this is a bug from os x / Finder, not sure if this has been filed or not against Apple bug db.
    The problem:
Save/Open dialog hangs up when loading / opening an existing folder which contains multiple application alias
    How to reproduce:
    1) Use any browser (I use Firefox and Chrome) to open a page and  print the page / or download something, or print something as PDF
    2) When Save dialog ( some people call it file picker or location selector, whatever) pops up, select a folder which contains multiple application alias
    3) Dialog hangs up, and the application icon on those  alias will not be loaded successfully. Need to Force Quit the browser.
    4) Issue cannot be reproduced always, but frequently enough if you have many application alias and files / subfolders in the target folder
    5) By removing all the application alias, can workaround the issue.
    6) The icons of application on those alias are loaded slowly in a successful loading (seems there are some performance issues)
    7) This issue has not been observed before upgrading to Mavericks
    Env:
    27 inch iMac Late 2012, 2.9GHz i5, 8G DDR3, NVIDIA GTX660M 512M, OS X 10.9.1
Please anybody (not sure if Apple monitors this community) who knows details in regards to this, share some info. (or maybe there already is a fix ? ) .
    Thanks.
    Regards,
    Lyle.

  • I would like to use the windows explorer open dialog box instead of the adobe open dialog box. How can I change that?

I would like to use the windows explorer open dialog box instead of the adobe open dialog box. How can I change that?

The top screenshot is the Windows Open dialog box. All File > Open... commands in all Windows programs bring it up.   Try File > Open in Notepad for example.
It belongs to Windows not Adobe. You cannot change this because there is no such thing as an Adobe Open dialog box.
The bottom screenshot is Windows Explorer. It is Windows' OS File Browser, not an Open dialog.  It is not called up by Photoshop or any Windows program.
You have to click on "My Computer" or a Folder icon to get to it. You can double-click a psd, jpeg or other image file in the Explorer window so that it opens in Photoshop.

  • Image preview in Open dialog window (Photoshop CS6)

    Hi
We had a possibility to see images preview in Open File dialog window of Photoshop CS5 but in new CS6 version there is not such possibility. Should I forget about that nice option and use Mini Bridge?

I'm not so sure it was on purpose or not Noel. Especially since it's still there in Illustrator and Indesign. If it weren't for it being in those, I might think it was intentional. Then again, it could very well be Adobe trying really hard to push MiniBridge, which is almost utterly useless. I think they actually made the minibridge WORSE as well. The sizing issues of the thumbnails on that are a pain and minibridge is just plain cumbersome to run. Anyways, besides my many qualms with minibridge itself, and back on the open dialog box thing...I actually watched a youtube video pointing out the same codecs you're talking about and without the PSD functionality, it's pretty useless. I'm a graphic designer, so I don't really use PS for camera image editing and don't mess with those files that the codec helps with. Even if it did, that still isn't very helpful to me. Because at that point, you're pretty much just doing what Bridge/MIniBridge does. However, consider how I, and many other designers in the print field work: At any given point we might have something like 3 different versions of a file; a PSD (with layers to edit), a JPEG (to send to the customer for proofing), and a PDF (for printing). Now, within that customer folder I might have 50+ files of different jobs. Imagine trying to sift through all those thumbnails, scrolling across window upon window, and when you get to the file you're finally looking for, you click it open to just to see that you opened the jpeg instead of the PSD. Now, in LIST view, I can see many more files on one screen and each file type is represented by an icon. So I know the blue icons are Photoshop icons and it's very easy to skim through there and know exactly which file type I'm looking for without peering at extensions. Get what I'm saying? Not that I don't appreciate you trying to help. Just saying, unless any codec can bring back the preview screen....than I don't see a workaround until Adobe flat out FIXES IT. I'm one of those guys that loves to get the newest thing and give it time to work, but if they don't fix it, I might have to call up Adobe and demand a downgrade on my Photoshop to 5.5, cause it really slows my workflow when I have hundreds of files to keep up with, and any new feature in PS CS6 that might have sped up my work is offset by not being able to do such a remedial task as preview my files before opening them.

  • Dialog open Dialog

    hi,
I have a question about opening dialog.
I have a main frame window in application, and it opens some dialog windows.
the problem is, I can pass the frame model to child dialog when I first opening it. however, child dialog cannot pass itself as frame model to second dialog.
    e.g Frame -> dialog 1-> dialog2 -> dialog3
so I use the follwing from dialog 1 to dialog2 , etc..
ManagerDLG dlg = new ManagerDLG(null, "Manager", true);its works fine if I don't minimize the applcation, but when I click the application icon from task bar, it show up dialog1 only even I'm using dialog3 in top level... , how can I solve this problem?

  • Open dialog "support" part do not show iTunes/iPhoto

    Hello.
Impossible to find this anywhere on internet
I reinstalled Lion on my computer, then I reimported from TimeMachine (within the installation) only a small part of my user folder. Mostly all preferences and settings, but not the datas because it was too long.
Later then, I entered in TimeMachine and restored all the folders contents, Pictures, Movies, etc... (not the folders themselves but the content of each, one folder at a time).
Now, inside the Open dialog of applications, inside Images I have PhotoBooth, but no iPhoto, and in Music nothing (missing iTunes), and in Movies, only photobooth too.
I think it's because I did not restored that at the beginning but now it should fint them, they works fine !
I tried to create new libraries of iPhoto and iTunes but it's the same
    Any ideas ?
    (10.7.3)

    Kim,
This may or may not be relevant but when I log into my icloud account online to check the account there is no icon showing for the Photo Stream.
That should not matter - I do not see my PhotoStream in iCloud either, but it is working fine.
    Some things to check:
Does your iPhone actually send the photos to the Photo Stream? It will only push the photos to the stream, if it is connected to a WiFi and if it is charged.
Your Mac will download only the newest photos from iCloud. If your iPhone pushed the last photo to iCloud a month ago, you will not see any photos in Photo Stream.
Can a firewall be blocking your PhotoStream? If you are using LittleSnitch, it might be blocking the PhotoStreamagent.
You can check, if actually photos have been downloaded from the PhotoStream to your mac, by looking into your User Library:
         ~/Library/Application Support/iLifeAssetManagement/assets/
The folder above will hold all photos currently downloaded from the PhotoStreams. To browse it, select the line above, ctrl-click it, and select Services > Reveal from the pop-up menu.
If you are sure, that your iPhone is sending photos to the stream, but they do not appear on your mac, clear the caches of the PhotoStream agent: Trash the the contents of this folder:
         ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.photostream-agent/
    Then reboot.
    Regards
    Léonie
