Icons in the dock are randomly disappearing.
I installed the Installer update last night, plus one other update, and now some icons are vanishing in my dock. They aren't removed—the icon is just not displayed. So when I started my Mac, clicked Chrome to restore my session, and the icon disappeared I knew something was up. Then when I updated VirtualBox the icon disappeared until I ran it again.
Now when I look at my applications folder it looks like this:
I've updated none of those applications recently. I'm thinking there's another bug that got through QA on the installer update.
Might be corrupted dock preferences ...
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy / paste: ~/Library/Preferences
Click Go then move the com.apple.dock.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Trash.
Retart your Mac.

I have Mac OS10.4.11 with MS Office 2004 for Mac, installed. Yesterday, when clicking on the Entourage icon, in the dock, to receive my Email, the icon disappeared and I lost my Email service from the HD and from Spotlight, as well. Word, Excel and PP are still OK. Could this be a virus?

Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.) -
I am using an apple email account and my emails are randomly disappearing before I get a chance to read them. They are not anywhere on my device, not trash, junk etc. The only solution from apple has been to resend me the past 7 days of email in order for me to retrieve the missing emails. This has taken me hours on the phone with apple support with no solution. I just don't know what to do. They have gone over the settings with me and nothing has solved the problem. I don't know where to start since it is happening on all my devices.
Control-click on the background of the view all pages window and select "Preview Calendar" from the contextual menu.

Somehow my application icon in the dock has disappeared. I have no idea where it went but it contains all my applications that i use. How do I get the application icon to return to the dock. Thanks for your help. I am not computer literate by any means. Thanks
Goto your application folder, find your app then drag/drop it back to the dock.

Using OS 10-6-8. For no apparent reason, mail refused to open, the icon in the dock changed appearance and the application has disappeared except in iWork. Under Iwork, the message says: "you tried to open Mail version 4.5 (1084/1085) in: /Applications/iWork '06. Using OS 10-6-8. It can't be used on thius version of Mac OS X. Try opening the version of Mail located in the Applications folder..." How do I get back to mail and retrieve my existing messages?
You should consider downloading the 10.6.8 combo updater and applying it again.

Icons in the dock disappear on wakeup
since upgrading to Mavericks, application icons in the Dock disappear on wakeup or even after full restart.
sometimes it helps if I click on the placeholder in the Dock - it starts the application and the icon re-appears. at other times they all appear ok if I restart the computer.Back up all data.
In the Finder, hold down the option key and select
Go ▹ Library
from the menu bar. From the Library folder, move the following items to the Trash, if they exist:
Application Support/Dock
Caches/com.apple.dock
and move the following items to the Desktop:
Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.dock.*.plist
Preferences/com.apple.dock.db
Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist
Here “*” stands for a long string of letters and numbers.
Next, triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
open $TMPDIR../C
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. A folder should open. Inside it there may be a file named "com.apple.dock.iconcache". If there is, drag it to the Trash.
Log out, log back in, and test. If you still have the issue, put the items on the Desktop back where they came from and post again. Otherwise, delete the items. -
I have a problem with iphoto (have a mac book pro): the icon in the dock appears with a question mark, and the application is gone!!! Can someone tell what's going on? Applications should not disappear all by themselves.
If they are then that coud indicate serious problems with your hard drive.
Backup everything up as quickly as possible.
Using Disk Utility verify your system disk.

Why has my monitor suddenly begun to have a moiré pattern all over – it is even showing up on my icons on the dock? It appears to be very thin bright green vertical lines. I have a 2007 iMac which is running 10.6.8. What does this mean? I've attached some screen shots below.
Also experiencing some funky issues with my wireless keyboard. With new batteries, it will just stop functioning. Certain keys intermittently won't work. Also the fans go on as soon as I turn the computer on - some times they stay on and sometimes they don't. Ever since upgrading the operating system - I've been having many issues with this iMac. Not happy. I can put a disc in but it pops straight back out again without registering on finder.
The idea of using an external drive was to enable me to avoid the cost and loss of productivity whilst machine in repair... if I have to take it in to get the old drive removed than I might as well have a new internal drive put in, although I do worry about the reliability of these apple drives given my experience with this one coupled with my limited online research ... on line forums seem to be full of people with the same problem (although perhaps searching such forums is bound to make it seem a common problem as users with perfectly working machines are less likely to post (?)) Your reply suggests that no external drive will work whilst the existing drive is in place.
As a postscript: I do realise that this is a user forum ...my secondary question was asking if anyone knows how to put forward a case/complaint to Apple... I can't find a link on the support page that would enable me to do so and I was wondering if anyone on this user forum had any ideas/experience.. -
Seeing multiple iPhoto libraries when I click on the iPhoto icon in the dock?
I can't figure out why I am seeing multiple iPhoto libraries when I click on the iPhoto icon in my dock. I am running Lion on an early 2008 MacBook Pro (4 GB RAM), and when I click and hold on the iPhoto icon in the dock, it brings up a dialog box. From top to bottom, this is what I see:

I can't figure out why it shows three iPhoto libraries when I only have one on my computer. I've tried deleting the icon from the dock and then putting it back in the dock, but it still shows three libraries for some reason. If I search for iPhoto in spotlight search or in finder, it only shows one iPhoto (in the applications folder). Any help on how to resolve this weird issue would be much appreciated!I have the same issue. i imported 3 sets of photos and in the background processes were running which froze everything then i forced shutdown by holding down the power button.

Problem with the Mail icon in the dock

The Mail icon in the dock show me that i have 153 new mail in the little red circle, but I have none in the mail application... Does anyone know how to solve this?

For the life of me I cannot figure out how to put the spaces icon in the dock. Spaces are working correctly and I can use them in the menu and with the hot key but I can't figure out how to get an icon in the dock. cheers
Go into the applications folder using finder. You will see the Spaces app sitting there. Drag it into the Dock... . Go Drag&Drop!!

What's the deal with the 'stacks' icons in the dock?
I'm still getting used to stacks in the dock.
What I can't understand is why I have to look at icons that have nothing to do with the item?
My Applications folder stack shows the Address Book item on top and my Utilities folder stack shows the Activity Monitor icon on top.
I "get" it... this is a stack of items and that's the item on top - alphabetically based.
But it's ugly and not what I want. Since I'm always going to see the same icon, looking at the address book makes little sense. I'd prefer to see the Application folder icon or something more generic in its place.
Any good solutions or options?I hope that Apple's designers wouldn't snort at this criticism. This is clearly a valid "usability" issue. What possible purpose could it serve to have the icon in the dock be determined by the alphabetical order of the contents of the folder (or any of the other sorting options for that matter). I found myself having to remember the order of my folders in the stacks area in order to figure out which to select. That's just wrong. The sorting is a valid purpose for when you click on the stack and it expands, but not for the icon in the dock. And showing just a sliver of the 2nd document or folder? What possible purpose can that serve? Even with icon size and magnification at max, you can't see enough of the folder content to be of any use. This is very unlike Apple, which spends so much effort getting every element of the GUI just right. I can only hope that this was just something that was done early in the design just to show that it could be done, but they just never got around to fixing it before the software was released. It is really annoying!
I've done the empty folder workaround. It's better, but still pretty pathetic. -
How do I get the red number of already read e-mails NOT to show up in the iMail icon on the dock? I only want the number of "unread" e-mails to display in red on the iMail icon.
