Icons in X windows are messed up

Hallo alltogether,
I've updated my X.org to 6.8.2 an now I've the problem the my Icons under X windows are messed up. Just an example:
When I'm using Thunderbird and than I try to move a message from the Inbox to an another folder while dragging on the message a small icon appears looking like a small piece of paper. The PROBLEM is that the space AROUND this small Icon, which is normaly transparent, is full of randomly colorized pixels.
Here I've made a small screen shot of such an icon:
http://www.kriga.net/badicon.jpg
I've tried to solve this problem by downgrading to X.org 6.8.1 but it didn't help (It seems that this problem doesn't depend on X.org...). Does anybody has a suggestion how to solve this problem, cause this icons are looking really bad :-(
Thank you!

droog wrote:Upgrading your gtk2 should fix it. a new version just came out yesterday i think that fixes this.
No, unfortunently this doesn't work! I'v already have the newest gtk2 package installed (pacman -Qi gtk2):
Name           : gtk2
Version        : 2.6.7-1
Is ist possible, that an another package could be responseable for this problem? I'v already tried to downgrade gtk2 to the version 2.6.1 but the problem remains :-(

  • My several of my icons in my taskbar are messed up after installing FF 3.6.3

After installing 3.6.3 my Office 2007, itunes, etc. etc... icons in the taskbar are generic icons.

Firefox 3.6.3 is horribly insecure because it was released over two years ago. Use Firefox 18.

  • I updated to firefox 18.0 and suddenly all of my bookmarks and explorer bar windows are messed up. how do i fix this?

basically any time I open up one of the windows at the top of my firefox, such as "bookmarks", the real firefox window where my browsing is is duplicated into my bookmarks menu. This only started happening immediately after installing version 18.0. I tried updating my graphics plug-ins, as well as un-installing all previous firefox versions, including the current one, and re-istalled. None f this fixed the problem. I've included an image of this happening on my browser

  • Notification area icons appearing as windows

I'm having a problem where my gnome notification area icons appear as (small) windows instead of as icons in the notification area in the panel. I've tried moving the notification area, and removing and readding it, but nothing seems to work. Anyone know how to fix this?
Screenshot of problem (the notification area is there to the right of System):

No I definitely haven't added any panels. This didn't work with a completely default gnome install, and the only panel thing I changed was moving the notification area towards the system menu to see if it made a difference (which it didn't).

  • Inconsistent and incorrect file icons in finder window list view

I have been seeing incorrect file icons in finder windows noteably for PDF files the last couple of weeks on my office MacMini running 10.5.8. Some just look messed up. Some switched and looked like Evernote files, but they open correctly in the default application - Preview.
Get info would show the same incorrect icon, but correctly show Preview as the default application.
Just now I tried clicking on CoverFlow view and when I went back to List view, the icons looked correct again.
What type of system maintenance if any is needed to correct this issue? Note, these files continue to display correctly on my home iMac where these files are synced.

    Thanks for the reply Baltwo.
I followed your directions. After the restart the PDF icons were all displayed correctly.
However, some .doc file icons were blank. Selected one, got info, set it to open with MSWord and then clicked "apply to all." Most, but not all now display the Word logo. Some remain blank, although get info reveals they are set to open with Word. Will another restart fix this or is there another suggestion?
I will be away from this computer till Monday.

  • Hdd partitions are messed up

After using bootcamp my hdd partitions are messed up and disk utility will not repartition anything without giving an error. If anyone needs more details ask as I want my 30gb back....
Yes there are leftovers from ubuntu but those are very small. If I can recover those that waould be awesome. Thanks in advance!

Steve359 asked me to see if I could help you out. Unfortunately, I don't think I have any good news for you. Judging from what I've perused your problem stems from a completely messed up boot loader caused by all the operating systems you tried installing. I really don't see a solution other than repartitioning the drive from scratch and starting over.
Now, I'm not sure what your current goal is. If you want to just get back to a working Lion system, then I would start from scratch.
Install or Reinstall Lion from Scratch
If possible backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.
The above assumes you still have a functioning Recovery HD. If you don't then it gets a bit more complicated.
Boot from your Snow Leopard DVD
Use Disk Utility to partition and format the drive: one partition, GUID, Mac OS Extended, journaled.
Install Snow Leopard. If needed upgrade to 10.6.6 or later.
Open the App Store, login using your Apple ID, re-download the Lion installer.
Make a bootable Lion installer USB flash drive.
    Install Lion.
    Make Your Own Lion Installer
    1. After downloading Lion you must first save the Install Mac OS X Lion application. After Lion downloads DO NOT click on the Install button. Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the Lion installer. Move the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button. You must do this because the installer deletes itself automatically when it finishes installing Lion.
    2. Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8 GBs. Prep this flash drive as follows:
Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    3. Locate the saved Lion installer in your Downloads folder. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on the installer and select Show Package Contents from the contextual menu. Double-click on the Contents folder to open it. Double-click on the SharedSupport folder. In this folder you will see a disc image named InstallESD.dmg.
    4. Plug in your freshly prepared USB flash drive. You are going to clone the InstallESD.dmg disc image to the flash drive as follows:
    Open Disk Utility.
Select the USB flash drive from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the USB flash drive volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Drag the InstallESD.dmg disc image file into the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
When the clone is completed you have a fully bootable Lion installer that  you can use without having to re-download Lion.

  • Document icon in Finder window differs from Get Info icon

I've been noticing unexpected document icons in Finder windows for quite some time.
This is especially true for PDF files. Since the early days of Mac OS X, I've configured my Macs to open PDF files in Adobe Reader, and I'm accustomed to seeing an Adobe PDF document icon on each PDF file. For some time, I've been seeing different PDF icons, e.g., a document with fuzzy text lines and a black ring binding on the left edge.
I thought this might be a custom icon. But when I do a Get Info on the PDF file, the conventional Adobe PDF icon appears in the Get Info window.
Is this different between the Finder icon and the Get Info icon a bug or a feature?
    -- Ward

It's a feature. Any window that has the View Options set to "Show Icon Preview" will do that. It actually is rather handy in a folder that is set to icon view, with nice BIG icons, you can often see the first page (which is what is displayed) clearly enough to recognize exactly what the file is. In List view it isn't at all helpful, nor is it helpful in those cases where you have icon view set, but the icons are quite small (as is the case on my Desktop, and, I suspect, on most people's Desktops). A pdf that has multiple pages will additionally show the "binder" along the left edge. The Finder is drawing these custom icons on the fly from the contents of the file. The only way to defeat it is to turn of the Show Icon Preview for the folder(s) where you don't want an essentially useless and often counter-productive icon. Do that from the Finder's View menu item, Show View Options. Oh, and every folder has different options for each view. So you can turn it off for List view, but have it turned on for icon view, where it might actually be useful.

  • How do I make image icons in finder window previews of the image?

The image icons in my finder window are just generic jpeg icons (they are set to open automatically in Preview). How do I make them previews of the images themselves? When I "get info" on the icon, there is a very nice preview of the image - I would like to see the same quality preview in the icons themselves.
Thank you very much for your help.

    Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Hi Sam,
From your Finder "View" menu (without a Finder window open) >> "Show view options" >> do you have "show icon preview" check marked? And with the Finder window open "show icons" and "show preview icons" checkmarked?
EDIT: I may have misunderstood your question. If you're talking about the small file icons, not in the preview frame if you have PhotoShop it should do it with a save as PS file. Otherwise you may be able to paste the image but I'm not sure.

  • The icons for html files are blank . . . how do i get them to show the firefox image

on the desktop and in directories, the icons for html files are blank . . .
firefox is my default browser . . .
how do i get the icons to show the firefox image ?? . . .

You can check for issues with the Windows icon cache and try to rebuild the icon cache.
    # Open the Task Manager (Shift+Ctrl+ESC)
    # In the Process tab, right-click on the Explorer.exe process and select End Process.
    # Open the file picker via "File > New Task (Run)" and click the Browse button.
    # Type or Paste %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local (%LocalAppData%) in the File name field (AppData is a hidden folder).
    # Select the IconCache.db file and use "Delete" in the right-click context menu to delete the file.
    # After the IconCache.db file has been deleted, start a new explorer.exe process via "File > New Task" to get the desktop and Taskbar back.
The IconCache.db file is a hidden file, so make sure that you can see hidden files.

  • Most Yahoo pages are messed up in appearance

Using Firefox 3.63 under Windows 7 all Yahoo pages are messed up and appear wrong; some of the images haven't loaded. I also have a machine using 3.5.4 under Suse 11.2 and this has no problem; the settings on both machines are identiacl as far as I can tell and I've been through all the steps in the troubleshooting section. I haven't come across any sites other than Yahoo with the problem. I use both yahoo.com and yahoo.es (I am in Spain) and they are the same.

My site is screwed up again. Everything was good until I deleted a photo from my main page. Now all the test is screwed up. I tried changing all text to Times Romans No good.
Back to Ariel No good. I made a new blank page and copy and pasted all content from my bad page to it. published that page and it looked good except for a link did not show up.
I'm getting fed up with this. Is anyone else having this trouble???? iWeb09 I just updated my OS yesterday. Hmmmmmmmmm Apple???

  • Re: install Firefox on Mac; after dragging FF icon to Applications window I can't eject Firefox from menu - is this OK?

After installing FireFox on Mac by dragging FireFox icon to Applications window you are supposed to hit the control button, click on FireFox within the window and hit eject. I don't have eject as a choice. Is this bad? If so, what do I do?

  • I'm trying to download Flash Player to my Macbook, and it keeps on stopping in the midst of downloading and saying "you need to quit safari" even though all of my Safari windows are closed, what do I do?

    Thanks for any help

    Cofeebean wrote:

Keep in mind that on the Mac, even if you close all windows of an application, the application itself may still be running with no windows open. If you have closed all Safari windows, look at the Dock to see if there is a glowing dot under the Safari icon. If there is a dot, Safari is still running, so click the Dock icon and then choose Safari/Quit Safari.
As an alternative to looking for the dot under an application in the Dock, I often use the Command-Tab keyboard shortcut to display the Application Switcher so I can see which applications are still open.
You don't have to open Activity Monitor to quit a program unless there really is no way to way to do it from the normal interface.
The only applications that quit when you close the window are the ones that only have one window, like System Preferences.

my ipads screen is shakey and the colors are messed up

If the device screen looks inverted, try triple tapping your home button.  OR, you could tap settings, general, accessibility, and make sure invert colors is off.  Not sure what you mean about the screen being shaky, unless you tapped too long on the screen, and the icons are wiggling.  In which case tapping the home button will resolve that as well.
