Icons instead of windows shown in mission control

On Mission Control, sometimes I see icons instead of windows - as shown in the screenshot.

What I have observed is that if I activate Mission Control via swiping or F3, 3 out of 10 times, it would show me something like the screenshot. Other times, it shows windows - as is expected.

  • How do I delete unused window spaces in Mission Control with Mountain Lion?

When I open an application to full-window size (opening a new "space" in mission control), the "space" does not close when I terminate the application.  Instead, the space remains blank.  There are no options to remove or open an application, and I cannot remove the empty space in mission control.  When I re-open the same program, it creates a new space.  Now I have 11 spaces and only 4 of them are usable/not blank.
How do I delete the blank ones?

    JonRow, Look familiar?
And when I did try and swipe through full screen apps I briefly got this. See image below. (note the menu bar icons top right)
Before going to a blank grey screen.
If the problem comes back I will tru the killall dock command.
    Cheers

  • Is there any way to make windows "sticky" in mission control?

If I have several applications open, then invoke mission control, then click on a window to select it, the windows are in a different position the next time I invoke mission control.  This is like trying to hit a moving target, or as I sometimes refer to it,  "musical windows".  I've tried checking and uncheckng the mission control options in system preferences, but the windows still move all over.  Is there any way to make windows "sticky"?  What I would prefer ideally is that each group of windows remains in the same location, then new ones are added after.  I find it frustrating to have to scan mission control and locate the window I want, which is always being moved.
    -Thanks

Go to Intel Download Center and select the 3000/4000 driver.
you may need to uninstall the current driver if it won't install on its own

  • Small window appears in Mission Control but no where else...

I'm not sure if I should be concerned or not, but I couldn't figure out what was going on so I figured it was worth posting. For some reason, I just noticed that when I enter mission control it looks like there's a small white window open in Desktop 1, but there are no applications running or anything and nothing is visible when Desktop 1 is active.
I've attached a screenshot. If anyone knows why this is happening or if I should be concerned, please chime in. Thanks

It's caused by Drobo Dashboard's menu item.

  • I just noticed you can't right click icons in the dock when in Mission Control. I think this would be useful for turning off other apps easilt from full screen mode.

Would anyone else find this useful?

For me no. I think it's just as much or more effort as cmd-tab (or swipe) to the open app and then cmd-q to close it.

  • Mission control - Application Windows

When I uses the Application Windows function on Mission Control (default is F10) it would show me previous documents I've opened at the bottom. Is there a way to turn that off?

Hey Eric, thanks for your reply!
No, actually i was referring to the Mission control - App Expose (F4), when i'm inside an app (eg Chrome) and hit either F4 or cursor into a corner, i get the windows arranged in tiles, but they're so small that i can barely see the tabs inside them. Having the windows arranged in cascade mode and bigger would allow me to go straight to the target window. Hope this makes sense.
As for your answer, this could be a solution workaround. I personally would have to get used to that, as i'm generally keeping my windows maximised.

  • Why don't I see any of my application's classes in Mission Control?

    Hi Forum,
    My system: JRockit JVM version R28.0.0-679-130297-1.6.0_17-20100312-2123-windows-ia32, Oracle® JRockit Mission Control 4.0.0 (M4.0.0-20, 130319); JAX-WS annotated Web Services; EJB 3.0 annotated SLSBs;
When either analyzing the live remote WLS/OSB server through JRMC's management console, or viewing a previously-dumped jfr file in JRMC, how come I don't see any of my application's classes in any of the various traces (memory, gc, events, etc.)?
    The application's architecture is basically:
                             OSB
         (proxies, xquery transformations, biz svcs)
                              |
                             WLS
(jms, jax-ws, ejb, jdbc, jaxb)                         I've created and viewed a couple dozen jfr recordings. I've patiently trawled the management console traces. But I've yet to see any of my application's classes; nor any of the classes from the apis I've listed in my "WLS" layer above (jms, jax-ws, ejb, jdbc, jaxb).
All I ever see in JRMC's management console or in my flight recordings are either classes at the OSB infrastructure-related, or WLS container-related classes. Plus, of course, the usual JDK classes.
Based on the "Shows classes that take up more than 0.5% of the heap..." label I've seen displayed on the "Object Statistics/Heap Contents" tab, I've been assuming that my applications classes (plus those other api classes above) just don't take up more than half a percent of the heap. Is that right? If so, then that's "a good thing"! Right?
If I've assumed incorrectly, please can anybody fill me in on where to look, or how to see more application-related classes?
Thanks in advance for your help.

    Hi,
That sounds really strange, I can't imagine how some classes could be filtered out. There is no filtering mechanism built into the JVM, the Management Console or Flight Recorder.
Are you 100.00% sure you are connected to the right JVM and that your application has loaded correctly?
I've been assuming that my applications classes (plus those other api classes above) just don't take up more than half a percent of the heap. Is that right? If so, then that's "a good thing"! Right?
There is a cut off around 0.5%, if it's good or bad thing depends on what your application is supposed to do :)
If you want to see all classes with the exact count you can use the Memory Leak Detector, but you have to go to Window -> Preferences-> JRockit Mission Control->Memory Leak Detector->Trend and set the instance count threshold to zero.
    Best regards
    Erik

  • How do I remove Messages from Mission Control?

I double clicked the top near the resize arrow mistakenly and it made its own screen in Mission Control. I've been looking online but I can't find out how to remove it. I've tried the control+click but it doesn't show the x. I don't want my messages in Mission Control as it just full screens it. I tried quitting and reopening but it just keeps opening my message window in the Mission Control full screen style. Even restarted my computer.

I figured it out on my own finally. If for some reason you have a messages chat window open on its own as a full screen in the Mission Control and you want to remove it from Mission Control, just command+W and close the window that is currently open in Mission Control. Then Messages returns to normal. Also figured out that if you click those arrows at the top right hand side, it will full screen it in Mission Control. Those arrows are not the resize!

  • Customize Mission Control vs. Expose

In expose I used to be able to customize the corners and gestures that I could use to get to the desktop or see all windows. How do I do the same in mission control?
What I wan to do is have three finger downward swipe show all windows and three fingers upward swipe show the desktop. But it seems the gestures are locked?
How can this be that Lion is less customizable than Snow Leopard?

I'm no expert on Lion but here's the behavior I see with Mission Control that makes it really different from Expose. With Mission Control, if you don't assign an application to a workspace then when you enter Mission Control you see all the spaces along the top and all the applications below. If a application has more than one open window, its windows are stacked together and you can look at the windows stacked below by click dragging. Click and you select that window and leave Mission Control. Click drag and the window comes to the front so you can see it better but you'll stay in Mission Control.
The limitation (if you want to call it that) is that if you have assigned an application to a specific workspace, if you didn't enter from that workspace, you don't see it or its windows in MC (unless you move to its workspace). This has led me to assign far fewer programs to specific windows than I used to. So, for example, since I assigned my word processing programs to space 2, if I enter MC from space 3 I won't see my Pages documents.  Even so, I can use a gesure or or control arrow to move to Space to and move one of my Pages documents into another window. (I chose to park my writing applications in a space because they are apps they I most often want to move windows to rather than move their windows to another space.)
This limitation has also led me to temporarily park programs in a space but then unpark them when I've completed a project. In Leopard and Snow Leopard I had lots of programs permanently parked. MC is a different animal that needs a slightly different way of working but for me it has changed my workflow without damaging it.
    Does this help?

  • App Expose and Mission Control in Lion

Several people have posted, confused by how App Expose works. I hope to clarify the function of App Expose and Mission Control.
    APP EXPOSE
App Expose in Lion works differently than Expose did in Snow Leopard.
App Expose is intended to show all open windows from the same application.
Expose used to show all open windows from all applications.
To test App Expose in Lion, open two (or more) separate windows in Safari (or any application). Three-finger swipe down on your trackpad and App Expose will reveal your two (or more) open Safari windows.
    MISSION CONRTOL
In Lion, the most similar thing to the old Expose (from Snow Leopard) is the new Mission Control.
To test Mission Control, open several applications. Three-finger swipe up on your trackpad and Mission Control will reveal all open applications, dashboard and spaces. If you have multiple windows open in a single applications (like three separate Safari windows, for example), MIssion Control groups those same-app windows together.

Mission Control ended years of divergent attempts to manage windows and widgets, consolidating Expose, Dashboard, and Spaces into a new Mac interface.

  • Mission Control re-organizing

I was wondering something, is it possible to re-organize the windows/spaces in mission control, I can't seem to move any of them, I've tried to press and hold too. Does anyone know if this is possible, and if so how ? and if not, why hasn't apple done that ? It's going to drive me crazy...

Ok managed to Fix it by Ticking: Displays have Seperate Spaces
    and then restarting...
Could you guys maybe help me check this....
If you have: Displays have separate spaces, unchecked can you replicate this problem?
    Fix to problem:

  • Mission Control Only Showing App Icons, NOT Windows

I just purchased a new MacBook Pro Retina and am noticing a bug with Mission Control.  When I go to Mission Control to see all of the different windows I have open, it's showing just the app icons, NOT the actual app windows.  This occurs sporadically; sometimes it works properly, and sometimes it doesn't.  I actually realzied the same issue on my MacBook Pro (2009) after upgrading to Mountain Lion a few weeks ago, therefore it seems to be an OS issue and not a HW issue.
Here is a screen shot of what I see when Mission Control is not working properly:
Instead of those icons, it should be showing the actually windows within those apps that I have open.
    Any ideas?

I have this problem too and would love a solution...when it happens to me it only seems to be on one of my spaces, if I use gestures to get to another space Mission Control" works fine on a different space, but if I go back to the original space it stops working..I have found a fix, which is just move the active window slightly, yep, that actually works, and then Mission Control starts working again...it's weird...would still love to know what causes it, even though the fix is an easy one...
Just on the safari comments above, I have noticed this happens when one of the tab has "reader" activated...turning of 'reader' seems to fix the issue with safari...

  • Why is Mission control showing me icons instead of smaller representations of active apps?

Why is Mission Control looking like this? If I put away Mission Control and reopen it things change a little, the tiny white window in the middle dissapears. I've updated, restarted etc etc.. Any ideas?

    http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html
I have never seen this before. which MBP are you on???
This could be an issue with a widget in you dashboard or a plugin in safari.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3251015?start=0&tstart=0
this link (the poor chum no one replied to him) https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3251015?start=0&tstart=0 would suggest a safari plugin you may have on. turn off all your extensions in safari>preferences>extensions for a second and restart or just close safari and reopen (restart if this doesn't do anything)
here's a wild idea, and not sure if it'll do anything, have you tried to relaunch finder? hold option and then right click the finder icon and hit relaunch.
    have you tried reseting safari?
either way send this to apple.
You may have to reinstall lion.

  • Safari window opens automatically on every new desktop in Mission Control.

In mission control, when I swipe to a different desktop, Safari follows and automatically opens on that new desktop. How do I stop this? This does not happen if safari is in full window mode. I have reset Safari to no avail, and I have opened Safari with the shift key but neither action gets rid of this problem.

Ah, I figured it out. Right click on Safri icon in tray, choose options and Click "none" instead of "every desktop". That was well hidden!

  • Mission control won't show windows properly.

Mission control (expose) won't show windows properly. It's really annoying when I'm working and need to see what I've got opened or switch between apps. Sometimes it'll display them correctly, other times it won't. See the 2 screenshots open 3 windows:
    1st screenshot: http://cl.ly/image/0U0q1N3J0Z2f
    - chrome browser
    - finder
    - messages
    2nd screenshot:http://cl.ly/image/2F0T3o1z0e3Z
only icons of chrome and finder are shown, but no windows. No messages not even the icon.
I'd really love all the help you can provide.

My problem started when the update to 10.7.5 ran. Mission Control in the Dock continued to work as before the update.
In System Settings>Mouse, the side buttons on my Might Mouse had been changed to 'Expose - App Windows.' I  had to change the setting back to Mission Control.
Perhaps MtnLion suffered a similar glitch.
