Icons not staying organized

I haven't seen this problem for a long time on my Mac (since like 10.2). I am running the latest of 10.4.
I have my finder icons at 48/ keep arranged by name / all folders. When I restart they are all over the place and smaller. Only happens to my boot HD and only in the home screen that shows apps, library, system etc and in the applications folder.
This started since I installed missing sync software for my Blackberry. Is there a pref file to trash or something

Figured it out, I used Onyx to delete the .DS_Store files on the off chance that maybe one got corrupted. Reset my icons to default, I modified back to my preference, rebooted, fixed.

  • Icons not staying in dock!

Today, for no apparent reason several of my application icons refuse to stay in Dock, including Safari, Address Book and Mail. When I move the icons to the doc after 2-3 seconds they move out. When I right clock and check "Keep in Dock", it does not remain checked and does not show "remove from dock". I already tried reloading my Mobileme preferences with my Macbook, and it didn't work.
    I would appreciate any suggestions.
    Thanks

this still is most likely a mobileme problem. how exactly did you reload mobileme preferences?

  • Icons not staying on the dock

    HI,
Yesterday, I picked up my phone, took it out of sleep mode and my dock on the bottom of the screen was empty. All of the icons I keep there were on the main app pages. I try to drag the icons back to there but they wont dock to the dock.
Anyone else having this issue or can tell me how to fix it? They all still work, I just have a plain grey dock at the bottom of the screen and can't get the icons to dock on there anymore.

Just today for no apparent reason, when i launch an application from the dock - the icon bounces and disappears.
The name above remains and the space functions as an icon, but no visible icon.
Dragging it out and dragging it in from my apps folder doesn't work - stays the same.
This isn't affecting all icons but is affecting FCP, but not the rest of FCS and has affected Safari, Mail, Firefox and Juicer3.
    Bit annoying really.

  • Icons not staying put in folder windows

Just recently if I rearrange the icons in a folder window after I do a restart the icons reaarange themselves and the folder window resizes back to a previous size and arrangement - it's driving me mad! Do I need to dump some preference file or clear some cache or the like - if so where would I find said preference or cache?

Information about the properties of a particular window, such as the view, icon size and arrangement, window size, and so on, are stored in an invisible file in every folder that has been opened. The file is named .DS_Store, the simplest way to see this is to get one of the utilities, such as TinkerTool, which allows you to see invisibles, or to use the list command in Terminal:
    ls -al /
hit the retrun key, and it will show all the files and folders at the root level of the drive. It sounds like the .DS_Store file is not being written to. You could try trashing it. If you use Terminal you would type:
    rm /.DS_Store
hit return, and it will delete the .DS_Store file for the root level of the drive. Open the window and size and arrange to your tastes, then close the window. Make sure the window is closed when you shutdown. You can verify that a new .DS_Store file was created by using the list command again and check the date. Thus I just trashed mine, then opened and reset stuff and ran the list command:
    -bash:~francine$ ls -al /
    total 11979
    drwxrwxr-t 41 root admin 1496 Feb 5 12:12 .
    drwxrwxr-t 41 root admin 1496 Feb 5 12:12 ..
    -rw-rw-r-- 1 francine admin 12292 Feb 5 12:13 .DS_Store
    ----more stuff----
You see that a new .DS_Store file was created today at 12:13.

  • IPhone WebClip Icon not staying to what I set it

So I am using the iPhone Configuration Utility to set up a profile that I would like to setup on a bunch of phones at my company.  One thing I am trying to do is to create a Web Clip that goes to my company's help desk website.   I'm able to create everything and load the profile onto my iPhone.  The icon shows up correctly and goes to the correct page. But when I return the homescreen the icon changes,  it goes to some image that is stored somewhere on the site I'm going to.   I've attached pictures using google.com as an example of what is happening.
First picture here is when I first load profile onto the phone,  the "HelpDesk" icon is showing up correctly
But I then click it to the the page (in this case google.com), it goes to google, but then I go back to the home screen and the icon changes to the google icon.  Same thing happens when doing it to other sites too.  Is there anyway to get it to keep my icon? Or am I just not doing something?
(sorry if the pictures are large, doesn't seem to want to let me resize them very well on here)

Reset: Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Note: You will not lose any data

  • Files and Folders do not stay organized on a flash drive? Why?

Ok, so I don't have any of my icons locked because I like moving them around in a fashion that tends to group them together as well as non-nonsensical organization of ones that I use the most, favorite or whatever.
So I will organize the folder really nicely, and then close the folder and actually eject the flash drive from the macbook. Then when I go to insert the flash drive again, everything is back to the way it was. How do I fix this?
    Here is a picture for reference of what it looks like every time I come back to it;

After you arrange them in the Finder Menu, View Options, be sure you have selected "None" or they will be arranged by default.

  • Dock Icons will not stay in their place (CPU?)

I have been having an issue with random dock icons not staying in their place. I move an icon to a place that makes it arranged correctly in terms of grouping or importance and it "slides" back to it's original place almost immediately. Or I will move one and start arranging and all of a sudden one will slide to the right side or something.
I finally got a chance to troubleshoot this and did a google search.
I have for a very long time had DOCK SYNC TURNED OFF.
Now I have gotten into the MBP and LOGGED OUT of my MobileMe account and it STILL does this. It has been happening since I bought the computer new. I have other issues related to battery life and beachballs and hot computer or hot power charger of loud fan so I put another 4 GIGS in the machine recently so that it now has 8.
Mac phone support says they want to walk me through checking the CPU but I have done this routine like three times on this computer where I set up a User Account and I have done a FRESH INSTALL twice since I bought it. Last week I finally caught a break in the schedule to bring it in and they say the Hardware is fine.
I mean, it is odd but I don't consider this machine to be what I would consider a "pro" line but at the same time I see that this dock thing is happening on my MacPro (albeit while I am still logged into my MobileMe account).
Thoughts or suggestions? I don't want to take the time to bring it in if I don't have to.

yup. bizarre. logged out of MobileMe and I try to move the Keychain Icon from the third on the left to the last on the right and -whoooo-oop - it slides back to the left. no fun. like having a gremlin moving books around in my library or something...

Try a soft reset - press the home and power bottons and keep them pressed until the Apple logo comes on.  Then see if you can access Settings.

  • Safari & mail Icons will not stay in the Dock?

Two days ago I noticed that both Safari & Mail icons were not in the dock. I opened applications and returned them, they just vanish, when I open them from apps they both work OK.
I have worked round the problem by using an alias and placing that in the dock. Any way I can get back to were I was?

When you launch the applications and Control-click on their icons in the Dock, do you see "Keep in Dock" or "Remove from Dock" in the contextual menu? If the menu says "Keep in Dock," click on that setting.
Forgive me if you knew this, because I can't tell from your description if this is relevant or not: Normally, application icons will appear in the Dock when the application is running and disappear from the Dock when you quit the application, unless you have set the application icon to stay in the Dock via the above method or by dragging the application file to the Dock. (Dragging the icon out of the Dock will have the reverse effect, the same as choosing "Remove from Dock," and I'm thinking that might be what happened that caused your icons to disappear from the Dock after quitting.) Creating an alias of the application and placing that in the Dock is a workaround, but shouldn't be necessary.
If the above doesn't work, something odd is going on with your Dock indeed. Post back and people will help troubleshoot further.

  • IPhoto will not stay open on my Desk top when I click on dock icon?

    Hi!
Can anyone tell me why iPhoto will not stay open, and keeps closing into "Applications" file that, incidentally IS also situated on the dock as well?
This is probably an easy answer..but, I just cannot figure it out!
    Thanks!
    Marilyn

and keeps closing into "Applications" file that, incidentally IS also situated on the dock as well?
Iphoto is an application and so is installed in your Applications folder. The icon on the Dock is a shortcut to the application in the Applications Folder. It's not the app, just a shortcut.
Describe what happens when you launch iphoto?

Why do files that I have organized into folders not stay in their folders after closing and reopening iTunes? And Why does the renaming get undone? I do this in iTunes Media/ Music.

I recently had to reinstall my software for a
dell computer a dell latitude d 830, then after installing all of my software and such including itunes the player did well even record to disks with no problems now that my system has done alot of updating of system files....now the itunes does not burn to my cd...error message 2131 this time
The 2131 usually indicates firmware needs to be updated on a drive.
Head to your drivers and downloads page for your latitude at Dell, and check for updates to your firmware for your optical drives. If you're behind and you update, does that clear up the 2131?

  • TS4510 'Do not disturb' moon icon still stay on after my scheduled time.

I thought the 'Do not disturb' issue should have solved until I recently slide the 'Do Not Disturb' back to 'ON' and found that the moon icon still stay on after my scheduled time. Restarted the iphone5 (already running iOS 6.1.3) still showed the moon icon.
If the 'Do Not Disturb' is slide to OFF, with a schedule period being set (e.g. 22:00 - 07:00). The moon icon still appear from 22:00, no noise.
If the 'Do Not Disturb' is slide to ON, moon icon always show, phone still ring outside the scheduled period.
Is it what the 'Do Not Disturb' designed to work like this now?
    Thank you.

    'Do Not Disturb' ON
under Notification -> 'Do Not Disturb' Scheduled ON
at schedule time, moon icon APPEAR (~10 seconds delay), ring NOT from 'Favorites' PASS THROUGH
    'Do Not Disturb' OFF
under Notification -> 'Do Not Disturb' Scheduled ON
at schedule time, moon icon APPEAR (~10 seconds delay), right NOT from 'Favorites' PASS THROUGH
    'Do Not Disturb' ON
under Notification -> 'Do Not Disturb' Scheduled OFF
    moon icon APPEAR
Allow Calls From 'Favorites', (test phone not on favorites)
    phone STILL RINGS!
I think the above tests should proof that the 'Do Not Disturb' is not working except showing a moon icon.

  • Hi every one. My iPhone does not connect wi-fi - the icon just stay static. Some helpful tip?

Hello everyone! my iPhone does not accept the wi-fi function. Trying to switch it on, the icon just stays static. Some helpful idea?

Settings App > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. See if fixed. If not Restore iPhone with iTunes on computer. See if fixed. If not then the WiFi chip or its connection to logic board are faulty and there is no fix.

  • HT201335 The airplay icon will not stay in my control bar!

The airplay icon will not stay in my control bar and when activated and turned to mirroring nothing shows up on my tv.  I have airplay on, on my appleTV.  So I am out of ideas and I cannot find anything on here to help. I am using my iPad air and it along with my appleTV are all up to date.  I also just checked my iPhone 5 and it is not in the control bar as well.  I have even restarted the iPad and it will show up just long enough for me to turn it on but nothing shows on the tv and when I go back to the control bar it is gone.  I hope someone can help.

    Hey Thebassbuilder,
Thanks for the question. Based on the information you have provided, it sounds like the issue may reside with your Apple TV or network, since it is reproducible on two devices. To continue troubleshooting, I recommend the following articles:

  • How do I get the speaker icon to STAY in my system tray?

How do I get the speaker icon to STAY in my system tray?  Every time I mute the speakers, the icon disappears from my system tray.  I have a very difficult time getting it back, and I can never remember how I do it.  Can someone give me some helpful, easy to remember steps on how to KEEP the sound/volume icon in my system tray?  Thanks.

I did what you said.  There is not a "system icons to always show".  What it does say is "turn system icons on or off".  The one for the sound icon is greyed out and CANNOT be clicked on.  This happens every time I mute the speakers.
So, how do I get it back?

In the menu that said "turn system icons on or off", try clicking on the blue writing on the bottom left of that menu that says "restore default icon behaviors".
