Icons stuck on desktop
After upgrading my MacBook to OS X a few icons were added to my desktop that were originally my dock. When I try moving them onto the dock they copy themselves to the dock but stay on my desktop. Any ideas for how to keep my icons on the dock alone?
Try this: right click (2-finger click on track pad) the icons on desktop, choose "Move to trash" and they will be gone.

to remove the icon: Finder> preferences> uncheck "show these items on the desktop", "hard disks".

I have tried all the tricks I know, but the alias seems only to work when the skype icon is on my desktop. If I eject it, then the alias (in my Apps folder) cannot find the app. and I have to d/l it again.
I am sure there is a trick... but I am at a loss.
Any suggestions out there?

macbook Mac OS X (10.4.8) blackHad this trouble with firefox as well, but got that one to work after a couple tries.
I have repaired my disk permissions.
Still, the Skype icon (not the dmg) does not seem to want to go into my applications folder. When I put it in the app folder, it just makes another alias nd remains on the desktop.
If I 'eject' the icon from my desktop, then the alias says it can no longer find the application.
Again, I am sure (I hope) there is an easy fix here... -
Launchpad icons stuck on desktop
Running Yosemite (10.10.2) on a MBP Retina 15" 2013 with 16gb Ram.
Its been happening consistently now where I would go to Launchpad, search for an app and click on the app. The clicked app would then stay on screen. So now I have a floating, non-interactive icon of the app superimposed over all my windows and apps. Restarting OS X will get rid of it but that's a pain every time it happens.

Hi all. My Finder icon is stuck on the desktop, can't be clicked and dragged and shows through all open windows. I read a post where the same exact thing happened to someone else and a response suggested he/she start a "test" account and see if the same issue existed. Miraculously, everything went back to normal after this.
My question is, what's the way to fix the problem, I'm assuming opening a test account isn't the answer.I suppose I answered my own question. I simply restarted my machine.

A clean install on my MacBook Pro has left me with my icons stuck in the grid on the right side of my desktop. I had the ability to move them and have them stay put in various sectors of the desktop, which I found very useful. The clean install upgraded the OS to 10.6.8 from 10.5.8. I want to move them again but there I see no 'None' option which I think would free them to move where I wish. Has the upgrade deleted that option? Suggestions? I am new to this community and if not new to Mac, I often feel that way. This is one of those times.
Julz11 in NYCI have the same problem on the latest iTunes software and Windows 7. My window is maximzed and I do not see any tab for photos. Seems related to a recent update (IOS7?) as this was there - at least before the very big change to the interface.

Icons stuck in place on desktop
All of a sudden I've found the icons on my desktop to be stuck in place. I can open each file, but I can't click and drag it around. Please advise on how to get them unstuck. Thanks.
Not using Panther but in Tiger control+click on desktop, Show view options > turn off snap to grid.

File icon stuck in Mavericks Finder toolbar
I just upgraded to Mavericks and now I have an InDesign file icon stuck in the a Finder window toolbar. The file and InDesign are both closed. If I click on the icon InDesign will launch and open the file. The file is in a Dropbox folder and not on the Desktop. Anyone know how to remove it from the toolbar? I'll insert a screen shot. Thanks
Just found the solution. Holding down the command key and dragging it off the toobar.

Items get stuck between desktops
Does anyone else have a problem with items getting 'stuck' between desktops so that you can see them as you move between desktops, but can't access them?
I created an e-mail by dragging a photo to the Mail icon in the dock, but nothing happened so I repeated the exercise. Still nothing happened. I then created the e-mail by copying and pasting the photo into a new blank e-mail and thought nothing more about it. But now, when I swipe between desktops, I can see the two e-mails, complete with photos but no text, straddling two desktops but can't click on them to delete them. If anyone else has experienced this,have they found a way to access the items?I've found the answer to my own question in an answer by Captfred last year! I right clicked on the Finder icon in the dock, assigned the Finder to "None" desktops and then found lots more things that were hiding between desktops!

I've seen this a few times when Finder was assigned to "all desktops". If this is the case, right click (cntl click) the dock icon > options > assign to none.

Safari won't open when I click the icon on my desktop. It just comes up with an error and says that it "quit unexpectantly." It does however open when I turn on my macbook in safe mode (which is what I'm doing now). My mac os is version 10.6.8. It's completely updated and worked perfectly before I updated it earlier today. Anyone have any idea what could be wrong? I've restarted my computer a few times and it hasn't done anything. After I restart my computer in the normal mode once more I'll post the error that I keep getting.

Ok, details of installation below, so when I try compose an email, I just get a compose window icon stuck in the windows
taskbar can't actually enlarge it and use it. If I restart in safe mode with all addons disabled, then it works fine. But
If I restart normally and manually disable addons/plugins, then close and start normally again i.e not safe mode, it
breaks, so does not seem to be an addon or plugin but rather something with the configuration.

How do I get rid of the iDisk icon from my desktop?
I just got a new MacBook Pro 17" with the latest version of Snow Leopard. My local hard drive icon was missing but thankfully I figured out how to get that back. However, I also have the blue iDisk icon on my desktop for which I have no use. How do I get rid of that icon? I trying ejecting it (Command-E) but to no avail.

RandyThe same thing happened to me, and I finally found the answer. I thought I'd post in case others had the same problem:
Snow Leopard has a new setting under System Preferences > MobileMe within the "iDisk" tab: there's a feature now called "iDisk Sync" that lets you create a virtual "DropBox" from your iDisk if this feature is turned on -- disabling it as a internet only drive.
If you turn this feature off, however, your iDisk will work as expected and allow you to mount / eject it.

I updated from the original version to 6.0.1 and when I re-started FF there were 4 icons on my desktop. I managed to delete one of them, but I cannot delete the other two - to leave me with just one.
I get the error message of "Cannot delete file: Cannot read from the source fie or disk".Here's the meaning of the error that you received.
"An error has occurred. ERROR :10-FC06-0002" -- may be caused by damaged recovery media or faulty hard drive"
Possible that the problem is on the recovery also.
