[ID CS3 (Win)] - where does InDesign store my PDF file name?

Have you run into this before? You have a document (let's call it "MyDoc.indd") and you want to use it as the basis for a new document ("NewDoc.indd").
So you open MyDoc, Save As "NewDoc". You now work on NewDoc.
Some time later, you go to Export NewDoc as a PDF and it remembers MyDoc and recommends that as the file name for the PDF. If you change the file name for your PDF and then re-save your INDD file, it will now remember the new name as your default PDF name.
But what if you want to change this beforehand, eg: you're not ready to Export the file, but you want to make sure that when you do (or someone else does) they use the correct file name?
-- Tom
PS: I've noticed that this behaviour is different on a Mac and on a PC.

Sure I get that - but the question was "where is this information stored"? If I'm not ready to save my PDF yet, is there anywhere (like a Document Properties panel) that I can go to edit this information.
The use case is - you're preparing a file draft, but it will be finalized and printed by others. You would like to have some control over file naming conventions, so you want to make sure that when they go to save the PDF, the correct name is pre-populated.
Your technique will surely work (it's the one we've been using as well), but I don't want to save a "dummy" PDF just because I want to change the stored filename. This information _must_ be available somewhere else, no?
Thanks for your participation!

  • [Mac][JS] Where does InDesign store last "Save As" folder path?

Is this location accessible to scripting? I've looked around the preferences objects as well as the "Class" properties of the File and Folder objects without finding anything.
Coming up empty-handed there, I looked through the filesystem for .plist files it might be using. It must be stored in some such place, because the location persists across sessions and survives a trashing of the InDesign Defaults file at ~/Library/Preferences/Adobe InDesign/Version 7.0/en_US/InDesign Defaults. It also seems to write the location to wherever it lives immediately upon a Save As rather than at application close. I've tried discovering the location with lsof but either can't catch it in the act or am missing which of the hundreds of files InDesign has open is the culprit.
It does not appear to be in com.adobe.InDesign.plist or com.adobe.mediabrowser.plist. There is a path property (NSNavLastRootDirectory) stored in the former file but it's not the one.
I hope I'm making this more complicated than it is and that it can be accessed in a DOM property somewhere. Does anyone know?
    Jeff

So you're asking the wrong question. You dont' care "where does InDesign store it," you care "where can I get it?"
Actually I'd like to set it as well as get it. I would like to integrate with InDesign's expected behavior as much as possible; it would be ideal if, the next time a user did a Save As, it defaulted to the location they had chosen when they ran my script. Little inconsistencies like that drive me batty. It's a small issue and quite likely not worth the time I'm spending on it, but at this point I'm so confused by how InDesign is maintaining these paths that I would like to understand for understanding's sake.
The InDesign Saved Data cache file you pointed out does indeed contain a lot of paths, and these kinds of save, import and export locations appear to be among them. They jump around in the file a lot, though. If you have any experience parsing this file and can help me look for whatever markers it uses I would be grateful.
While in my earlier tests I never saw any path property in com.adobe.InDesign.plist but NSNavLastRootDirectory, I have since sometimes seen NSNavLastCurrentDirectory:GetFile:0 and NSNavLastCurrentDirectory:PutFile:0, and these do hold what you would expect. However, all installed versions of InDesign read and write to this file without affecting each other's behavior in this regard. And I haven't been able to figure out yet when InDesign writes or reads the path to its cache file and when it uses the .plist file.
Complicating things further, it looks to me like calling File.saveDialog() in CS5 brings up the folder in NSNavLastRootDirectory, regardless of what was last chosen during a Save As in the UI, while CS4 respected the last Save As. Using the value in NSNavLastRootDirectory via
    var startFolder = Folder(app.doScript("return (do shell script \"defaults read \" & \"com.adobe.InDesign\" & \" NSNavLastRootDirectory\")",ScriptLanguage.APPLESCRIPT_LANGUAGE))
will at least allow me to prevent the user from landing in a restricted folder in CS5.

  • Where does Keynote store the audio files in a presentation

I have slides with individual audio files. When I import or attach the file and then save the presentation, it changes the file name to .mov extension. Where does Keynote store those files? I would like to edit the saved Keynote version, but cannot locate the .mov file!

I'm not exactly sure of what you want to do, and I'm not sure if my answer is the most efficient, or even wholly correct, but here goes ...
When you save a KN presentation (a KN doc) which includes an audio (or movie) file, you can save it 2 (3?) ways: either without or with the file being copied into the document, or as a "package". In a test file I just made with 3 white slides (title, slide with song, second slide with song) the results:
without: 3.8 MB; with: 9.4 MB; package: 9.4 MB. The essential difference, aside from size, is that if saved without, if you play the KN on another machine which doesn't have those audio files on it, the audio won't be there. To make the KN truly portable, you must save with, or as a package. (I'm not too sure of the concept of package in KN. In PP, saving as a package means you end up with a folder, which contains the PP and the media files, each as separate entities. Saving a KN package yields not a folder but a file, which looks to me identical to the result achieved by simply saving with, and seems to behave identically, as well.) The audio file you used will in any case remain where it was before you used it, but, if the KN doc is saved with, or as a package, a copy of it will go into the KN doc.
But then, what do you mean by "edit"? What do you want to edit, the KN presentation, or the audio file within it? If the former, I don't understand where the problem might be. If the latter: using the QT inspector within KN, you can change the length of the audio file (where in the song it starts and stops), whether to start it on click, or automatically after transition, or to loop it. If you wanted to do some other, more exotic audio editing, like reverbs or other effects, I'd do that on (a copy of) the original audio file (found wherever it was before) with another app (GarageBand, for instance), and then I'd replace the first, non-edited, version of the audio file in the KN doc with that.
    Have I missed something?
Message edited by gbdoc: maybe someone will chime in to clarify the difference between "saved with" and a "package"

  • Where does Mail store its email files

hi there, I'm having a bit of an email crisis.
background: I have a MacBook Pro circa 2012 running OS X Yosemite 10.10.2 with over 28 or 29GB of free space.
For email, I have a primary address through Cox Cable and some secondary Cox Cable email accounts for junk mail and the like.  Recently, there was some recurring difficulty retrieving the Cox emails.  The Mail program would open up and look for the Cox Cable email accounts and variously fail to connect with any of them.  The Mail program would tell me that it was unable to access the account and suggest I enter my password.
I decided to delete the accounts and set them up again to see if doing so would grab the most current SMTP settings, etc..  Doing so, I may have accidentally deleted from local storage (on my computer) my old archive of sent and received mail (going back to 2006).  More on that later.
When establishing the settings in Mail for the cox accounts, I left the feature on where Mail would leave the the emails on my Cox email server (which only uses 7% of its space currently).  This seemed to correct the retrieval errors I was getting before.  Something else strange happened.  Sometimes when I would send mail, it would send, I'd hear the whooshing sound, but it would not store a copy of it in my sent email folder.  In most cases, the recipients confirmed receipt.  This would only happen with some sent mail.  Others would be deposited into the Sent mail folder in Mail as usual.
    Questions:
    (1) Where does OS X store the Mail email files?  I can't find any folder with an xbox file or any other file.
    (2) How can I find out if my missing email archive doesn't exist somewhere else on my laptop right now and my Mail program can't find it.
    (2) If I well and truly deleted the archive not only from my Mail program but also from my laptop, am I able to import my email archive from my external hard drive where it was backed up?  I'd like to leave the archive in an archive folder in Mail so that I can see it and search it when necessary without having to plug in my external drive and also so there are two copies of this email archive.
Any advice you can provide will be very much appreciated.
    Thanks!

hi.  update.  I found the hidden Library folder where the mbox email files are located as follows:
click on your finder to open it
click the GO command from the drop down menu and before clicking again press and hold down the option key.  that reveals in the Go drop-down menu the hidden Library folder.  Click on that Library folder to open it.
from there, look for a sub folder called Mail
click on that and see a sub folder called V2.
click on that and you'll find subfolders for the email accounts you've established, inside which are the .mbox files that represent those email databases.
however, once inside there, I found no .mbox files for the old archived files and so I think that I goofed and well and truly deleted the old POP emails when switching from POP to IMAP about two weeks back.
the good news is that I was backing up somewhat regularly via Time Machine to an external drive.  So I recovered the old POP emails into an separate INBOX and SENT MAIL archive that now sits again on my Mac in my Mail program, somewhere below the active mail folders I use daily.
The POP email protocol was lately prone to these 'unable to access' and 'please enter your password' messages and that's what prompted me to try to change my settings.  When I did, I must have found that Cox email now supports IMAP for residential customers and made the switch from POP to IMAP, inadvertently deleting the old POP email.
The IMAP protocol resolved the 'unable to access' and 'please enter your password' messages that Mail used to give me under the POP protocol.  But left the problem of certain sent mails not being stored immediately in my local sent mail folder on my Mac.
    unresolved questions are:
i generally liked switching from POP to IMAP because my email on my phone and laptop are more apt to be in sync and coordinated, and it resolved the connection/password problems I had with POP.  I'd like to keep on IMAP.  I have experienced the occasional missing sent mail.  So far as I can tell, when sending the email from my laptop, I hear the swoosh of sent mail and the recipients do receive it but a copy if not always delivered into my local sent mail folder.  a copy of it is stored on the Cox email server, however.
any workaround that issue?  It leaves me wondering sometimes whether the mail was sent or received and I also need a record of all email sent on my laptop for future reference.
is it possible this missing sent mail only happens when there are attachments?  it doesn't happen every time.  I've noticed it has happened when I've sent emails with attachments.
any help you can give is appreciated!

  • Where does workspace store the pdf and excel file ?

    Hi,
I'm working on a Web Analysis project and I have created a dynamic web menu based on the workspace repository to improve the poor capacities of WA in terms of menu. I use the javascript API to control the WA applet from the menu.
Now my problem is that my customer created a folder in workspace (which is translated into a sub menu of my dynamic menu), and that folder contains pdf and excel files. The function openFile which I use to open report in the applet doesn't work on pdf and excel files. So I've been looking for the files on the server, to know where they are stored, so that I could just modify the java class that generates the menu.
I couldn't find those files on the server. Where are they ? Are they stored in the database as an xml string like the report s ? If yes then I might have a problem.
Has anyone already done this ?
    Thanks for your help.
    Cyril

Tomcat stores it in the work dir under $TOMCAT_HOME.
    There'll be directories like localhost%2f<urcontext>..

  • Where does GB store its sample files?

I'd like to remove some of them.
    Thanks
    Peter

The easiest way to locate them is to do a Spotlight search for one of them. GB may store them in different folders:
    - /Library/Application Support/Garagband/Apple Loops ...
    - /Library/Audio/Apple Loops ...
... and in the corresponding subfolders of your User Library.
If you trash some of them, they won't vanish from your Loop window in GB unless you discard the folder(s) Apple Loop Index (should be in the same folder as the loops), restart GB and drag the remaining loops back into the Loop window!

  • Where does the print to pdf files go using CreatePDF?

I have installed the Adobe CreatePDF Desktop Printer and selected it to print some docs, the print window says file type AdobeCreatePDFIPP  where: https//ipp.acrobat.com/ipp and I can't find the files. Where are they located? I thought they went into my Adobe.com folder.

    hi eveybody,
we recently executed all the suggested steps from this and the mentioned threads to get along with it and make the printed files from Adobe CreatePDF Desktop Printer visible. until now we were not successful.
If you're having issues installing the CreatePDF Printer, please read this article:http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/904/cpsid_90492.html
If you've installed the CreatePDF Printer but the printer is not working (on Windows 7 SP1), please read this article:http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/901/cpsid_90130.html
Finally, if your CreatePDF Printer is appearing as "offline" in your printer list, please try this work-around:http://forums.adobe.com/message/4183649#4183649
    - installing works fine,
    - is there a similar solution for winXP too?
    - printer is online
at least we try to print/convert a tif file with it but it does not show up.
the testing was done on a winXP and win7 system with the same bad results.
uploading manually when logged in on acrobat.com is possible.
there is no error message coming up, on the network monitor the file seems to be sent.
since the tif files did not work we tried jpg and docx without success. is there anything apart from the regedit solution on winXP or rerunning installation/repairing procedure that could be done to make it work?
would be great if somebody would have a suggestion what elso could be done.

Managing memory usage is not possible because the user does not have access to the file structure (unless you have jail broken your iPad that is).

  • Where does EBS store customized LOV elements?

    Dear All,
We are developing a report on EBS r12 >> Payables >> Payments screen.
The Functional Consultants Team added a DFF ( view_inv_pay.DESC_FLEX ) with only 1 segment and its description at the Invoice Payment block level ( VIEW_INV_PAY )
which synchronizes with each matched row in this block.
The values of the DFF come by selecting from an attached customized List of value that the Functional Consultants Team had populated its elements using data loader.
We have a requirement to display the DESCRIPTION of DFF segment in the report not its actual value.
    So the question is:
Where does EBS store the data related to a customized LOV ?
And how to join between the LOV’s under laying tables and the below report tables
    ( AP_CHECKS_ALL AC , HZ_PARTIES HZP , AP_SUPPLIERS PV , GL_DAILY_CONVERSION_TYPES GDCT , AP_INVOICE_PAYMENTS_ALL  AIP , AP_INVOICES_ALL AI ) to display the DFF description?
Since, only the actual DFF values are stored in AP_INVOICE_PAYMENTS_ALL table.

    Dear Sandeep,
That is great, but what about the joining condition.
I know that i can join by the segment value in the AP_INVOICE_PAYMENTS_ALL table
    to be like below:
    SELECT ffv.flex_value, ffv.description
    FROM fnd_flex_values_vl ffv, fnd_flex_value_sets ffvs , AP_INVOICE_PAYMENTS_ALL API
    WHERE ffvs.flex_value_set_id = ffv.flex_value_set_id
and API.SEGMENT1 = FFV.FLEX_VALUE ;   -- Assuming that the actual DFF value stored in SEGMENT1
AND ffvs.flex_value_set_name LIKE '&value_set' But for tuning issues is there any an alternative to previous condition?

  • Where Does Lightroom Store  Catalogs, Previews, and Backups?

    1.   By default, where does LR store:
    a. Catalogs (.lrcat)
    b. Previews (.lrdata)
    c. Backups of Catalogs and Previews
    2.  Can these locations be changed?
2a. If so, how does one specify where LR will store each of the above?
    3. Is there a specific relationship of location the Catalog, the Preview, and the Backups, or any partial combination of those three,  must remain in?
    3a. If so, what is/are that/those relationships?

    a) By default in the Lightroom folder within My Pictures / Pictures
    b) Always in the same folder as the catalogue
    c) Wherever you tell it - which should be somewhere different. No backup of Previews.
Re 2, just move the catalogue in Explorer / Finder, double click it. If you didn't move the Previews, LR starts a new one in the same folder as the catalogue, following (b) above.
Re 3, answered above. Backups can / should be elsewhere and it's your choice where.
Notice that in Catalog Settings there's a Show button that reveals where your catalogue is.

  • Where does iPhone store contacts?

    Hello,
I will be in a different country for a few days and I will buy a SIM card from a different operator over there.
Where does iPhone store contacts? Will my contacts stay on the phone with the new SIM card?
    Thank you.

Contacts are stored on the device. The iPhone does not store contacts on the SIM. Make sure you have been backing up the device and syncing your contacts with a supported application on the computer or iCloud or other cloud service. Changing the SIM will not affect your contacts.

Note that you have to have specifically chosen to store the key with Apple at the time you created the FileVault encryption, and chosen security questions so that you can identify yourself when you come to retrieve it. If you did not store it with Apple in this way and do not have a record of it elsewhere then you cannot proceed. All this has nothing to do with iCloud and the process is not automatic.
