ID CS4 Debug slow

Hi,
can anyone tell me, if there's anyway to speed up the performance of ID CS4 Debug. What I have already tried helps, but does not help enough:
I tried unchecking all TRACE options, under Test->PERFORMANCE I chose the no cache-checking (faster option), I unchecked all further Test options, the Debug Settings.xml File has everything set to false.
The performance running an extend script is still 8-10 times slower than the non-debugged version. Is this normal, and can any more be done to speed it up to near normal speed? (I'm testing on an Intel Centrino vPro 2GHz, with 2GB Ram.)
Thanks in advance!

Can you elaborate on this for plugin development, I'm assuming your using Xcode?
Thanks in advance.

  • Sick of Adobe Support / CS4 Library Slow

I'd like to start a discussion on the total lack of professionality of Adobe's support requests. Almost every time I send a request for support, with full details of the problem, I'm sent back a response that along the lines of "do you have the latest drivers?" and the support request is summarily closed.
My current main problem stems from the fact that the library in CS4 is unforgiveably slow. It can take 2 seconds just to display a library item (in the preview window), and gets worse if the library's height is expanded beyond 200px or so. I'm using a quad-core system with 4g of RAM so it's not a slow computer problem. As far as I can tell it might be something to do with their new GUI (some kind of cross platform thing?) but I can't tell properly!
Anyway, that problem, amongst others, makes CS4 really slow to use, easier to use CS3, and they have not EVER given me any advice how I could fix it or told me that it is something they are working on fixing. I'm really getting to the end of my rope on this one and feel I should not have paid the $1000 for the upgrade (as it just makes things worse for me).
    Thoughts?

Thanks for that. I finally get an answer that helps. I did the update and now the library is a lot faster, almost as fast as CS3.
For some reason the Adobe update would only tell me about updates to Illustrator until I manually asked it to check for updates. This brought me to the false sense that there were no other updates.
There are a few changes though. I now cannot click on the name to edit, if I double click it goes to rename. This used to be accessible using F2 which was great / quick. Now to edit an instance I have to click on the tiny icon. I guess it's not too much of a problem and it's something I'll get used to at least.
I have already found a new bug though. If you double click on the icon to open a library item, then move your mouse and double click on another item too quickly it won't do anything. No selecting, no editing.

  • InDesign CS4 Debug not working on Windows

    Dear All,
Two days back I purchased Bronze ASN memebership. This is the first time when I am trying debug version of InDesign. I have installed InDesign CS4 Debug on both Mac & Windows. On Mac it is working fine, but on windows it is not working.
Debug Indesign is not getting launch and asking for re-installation. I have re-installed 2-3 times. Release version allready installed one my PC. I have tried with differeent combination like "install without Release version of InDesign", "insatalled on different drive", etc.
I hope some one can help me to resolve this issue.
    Regards,
    Rajeev

I think the Adobe terminology is Required not recommended, but the
recommended build environment for CS4 plugins is Visual Studio 2005 plus
    service pack 1.
As has been said many times on this list, and I can confirm from painful
experience, you may have problems if you try to build your plugins with VS
    2008.

  • PP CS4 very slow on MAC

I have noticed that when running a 1 hr sequence (wedding), my ability to use the CTRL D short cut for the default transition is VERY slow.  I get the spinning wheel of death and then the transition appears.  The time line runs fine but anything I do appears as if it is stressing the system out and it cannot perform.  I have 16 gigs of memory on a MAC Pro.  Any thoughts?

You will have to forgive me, as my Mac-speak is horribly limited, but:
1.) what is your I/O sub-system set up, i.e. HDD's size, speed controller and how allocated? This is often the most important link in NLE work.
2.) what is you CPU speed? This is also important in NLE work. RAM is great, but not the end-all in performance.
In general, I've seen very few posts about CS4 being slow on a Mac. I'd offer a wild guess that it's your System's setup, or too many other programs running that saps the resources that any NLE will need.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Adobe InDesign CS4 Debug WIN Installation

I need to port an InDesign CS3 plugin to InDesign CS4. In order to do that I've installed the Adobe InDesign CS4 Debug WIN but when I'm trying to start the application I receive the following error message in German: "Diese Anwendung konnte nicht gestartet werden, weil die Anwendungskonfiguration nicht korrekt ist. Zur Problembehebung sollten Sie die Anwendung neu installieren.". In english this should mean something like "This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Try to reinstall the application.".
The box I've tried installing on has visual studio C++ 2005 SP1 and InDesign CS3 Debug already installed (which works fine). I've looked through the requirements in the "InDesign® CS4 Read Me" and couldn't find anything that I'm missing.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Folks,
ID CS4 Debug and ID CS3 Debug can be installed on the same system. The likely reason that the CS4 version is giving that error is because the CS4 version needs some Visual Studio 2005 SP1 DLLs that aren't installed on the computer.
I believe that there are a couple of ways to fix this. One is to install Visual Studio 2005 SP1 (the recommended setup for CS4 plug-in development). When you install SP1 the DLLs needed by ID CS4 Debug will be installed. The other way, I think, is to not SP1, but install the release version of ID CS4 on your system. I understand that the ID CS4 Release version installer will install the DLLs needed by the debug version.
However, if you use VS2005 (no SP1 installed) for CS4 plug-in development you will not be using the recommended development environment for CS4. But if you install SP1, and you want to develop plug-ins for CS3, you will not be using the recommended development environment for CS3 plug-in development. Go figure.
Please note that once you install VS2005 SP1, any plug-ins that you compile will be looking for the SP1 version of the C/C++ Runtime DLLs when the plug-in is launched. The needed DLLs will be on your development system, so everything will seem fine when you test your CS3 plug-ins on your development computer. But when the plug-in is launched on a machine without the SP1 DLLs installed, the plug-in will not run.
I'm not sure of the best way to deal with this (I'm mainly a Mac guy), but there was a thread here entitled
Visual Studio 2005 SP1 about this issue a while back. This thread was partially deleted due to a forum software problem, and one of the ideas that was mentioned was lost from the message thread. Below are the useful (IMHO) missing messages (sent to me by Dirk Becker), who follows the forum using email.
[Ugh! I told Dirk I would write up a Wiki entry for this, but work happened and I haven't gotten to this yet. :-( ]

    FROM: Eugenio Andres
    Hi Jim,
From your original error message, the problem is most likely with the installation of the C/C++ SP1 runtime DLL on the machine that does not have the compiler. It's not so simple nowadays as copying over the DLLs, because Microsoft invented the side-by-side system, that allows having several versions of the same file on one machine.
Your options are installing the runtime on each machine (a package for that is available from Microsoft Download) or changing your project to the static runtime ("Multithreaded" instead of "Multithreaded DLL"). I always use static linking in plugins with no problems, although Adobe specifies dynamic in their instructions, but you avoid these "DLL hell" problems.

    Hi Eugenio,
    Thanks for the information.
So, are you saying that I simply have to go into my Plug-In's property page in VS2005 SP1 and change the C/C++ Code Generation from Multi-threaded DLL (/MD) to Multi-threaded (/MT) and rebuild the project? What are the downsides of doing this--or are there any?
    <...SNIP...>

    =========
    =========
    FROM: Eugenio Andres
    Hi Jim,
    You're welcome.
Yes, that project change should do it. The difference is that with the "DLL" version, your plugin loads the C/C++ runtime shared library (DLL) at runtime and calls it for any needed functions (like strcpy, malloc, etc.). Without the "DLL", the linker puts the C/C++ runtime code directly into your plugin and you don't need the C/C++ runtime SP1 DLL (the error you're getting is because your plugin required the DLL and it's not found on that machine).
The C++ SP1 runtime shared library is different from the C++ non-SP1 library InDesign uses. In this new Windows "side-by-side" scheme, both can live together.
If you use the exact same C/C++ runtime that Adobe uses, then that library is physically shared and it allows to do some "risky" things as e.g. allocating memory in one module (e.g. InDesign) and freeing it in another (e.g. your plugin). But this is usually not recommended and I don't think Adobe is doing it (but then it's only my impression from the code structure).
Anyhow, from the moment you use the SP1 compiler, you're not sharing the runtime any more with InDesign, so it doesn't matter if you compile "MultiThreaded" instead of "MultiThreaded DLL". The difference between these is the size of the plugin and the easyness of distribution, and without DLL you miss possible "automatic" updates of the C++ runtime DLL (because the C/C++ runtime code is embedded in your plugin), but lately new versions of the C/C++ runtime become "different" DLLs, as you can see, so that's not so relevant any more - or if it's critical, you can always recompile your plugin and redistribute if needed.
You can find a brief description of SP1 in
    http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/vstudio/aa718695.aspx
It looks like minor non-breaking changes to me, but one never knows...
    Cheers,

  • Is there a Photoshop CS4 Debug version?

    Hi, Everyone~
    I want to develop a Photoshop CS4 Plug-in.
How can I do to develoop that ?
I already have a Photoshop CS4 SDK. Is it oK that only Photoshop CS4 SDK to develop it?
I think Photoshop CS4 Debug version needs to develop plug-in, How about it?
When that needs, Where can I get a Photoshop CS4 Debug Version?

Short of working for Adobe, you cannot get a debug build of Photoshop.

  • Adobe media encoder cs4 extremely slow (5 hours for 8 minute video)

I know you have seen slowencoder issues before, but I have tried everything I can to fix this and need help.
    Lets start with basic info:

    PProHeadless.exe 48-50%
    Adobe Media Encoder.exe  30-40%
ImporterProcessServer.exe  can be from 30-50% CPU but not constant.

    Harm:
Cost: I got 2 of the Kingston 128GB SSD V100 from Costco at around 165 each  (after rebate). They are on sale, and there is a 40 rebate each drive  (up to 2) rebate.
Yes you are right, I did not expect improvements for Premiere pro, but I installed because I use this configuration on other systems for 1 year... and here are the results...
ALL of the data on this sytem is backed up on my 8TB server.  I can loose anything here and get it back. I see the OS as just another replaceable disk.
I used the system motherboard hardware Raid 0 for C: AND...  I put 3 of the 1TB drives on the motherboard hardware raid as a data disk.  Data disk is ALL scratch disk, for the encoded files and cache.  Source files are on the other software striped drive.  Of course I loaded a fresh install and moved to Windows 7 64bit...
    Overall observations:
As you predicted encode times did not improve much, It was 15 minutes vs 17 minutes at 2.66 clock. I am unimpressed with the Intel Motherboard Raid 0. I saw the SSD was blazingly fast, but I think moving these to a RAID controll they will go faster.  Each SSD drive in 200+MB/S rated.
What I do see is dramatic improvements in load times of the OS and ANY  program you run.  The pagefile was moved back to this raid 0 drive after  benchmarks. RUNNING ANY application (adobe, microsoft, ALL are blazingly fast to load).
Example: Premiere pro CS5 from click on launch to CS5 prompting for a project name was  5.5  seconds...  I would not take this out of the system for any money saved.  It is amazing.  Almost as good as the nvidia quadro FX 4000 Display card and the CS5.
My NEXT investment IS the RAID controller, and 6 of the Hitachi deskstar 3TB 6GPS Sata III drives to replace all my current drives. Next month or so for that.
I want components that I can keep in the system when I do replace the motherboard and CPU.  I will tune this system as I have funds, and ask for help when this system no longer is viable and replace the motherboard.  I will ask for the fastest motherboard and CPU combo that you can buy, and keep my 730X(treme) case and add a water cooler.  As drives add 1TB a year in size, they seem to meet myneeds and I replace the old every 2 years to get the space I need.
As always your comments are spot on and I appreciate your reviews.

  • CS4 very slow image linking.

We are having a efficiency issues with CS4.
We have a large IDML document with 80 pages and 1800 images. Each image is about 24kb jpg.
If we open the document and InDesign can find images, it will take hours to open the document. And it is very annoying that InDesign stops responding and doesn't show even a progressbar while opening the document.
If we open the document and InDesign cannot find images, it will open the document in few minutes. Then if we fix the location of images and say "Update all links" or "Relink" broken links, InDesign will start fetching the images but it again takes hours..
It doesn't matter if the images are on the server or local machine.
If we update the links in smaller chunks, it will take a few minutes to update all the links. Little more testing shows that the time the InDesign takes to fetch the images increases exponentially when the amount of images increases. That seems a bug to me.
I'm not sure what InDesign is doing when it fetches images but I know it becomes way too slow and it propably does too much.
Is this fixed in CS5? And if not, please fix this.
We are running CS4 InDesign 6.0.6 in Mac OSX 10.5.8 in Mac pro (2.66GHz with 8Gb memory)

Some of my images are VERY slow to load,
    scale... (any image operation).
    I have those 2 images :
    http://193.252.5.30/tmp/cat1.jpg (25Ko : 295x551
    pixels)
    http://193.252.5.30/tmp/cat2.jpg (24Ko : 295x551
    pixels)
I wrote a little program which load and scale the
    image.
    Here is the result :
    cat1.jpg
Time to load image : 171 ms.
Time to scale image : 157 ms.
    cat2.jpg
Time to load image : 1157 ms.
Time to scale image : 2578 ms.How can this huge difference explained ?
Thanks for your help.Using the Netbeans profiler, I can see that for some reason, the cat2.jpg image is resulting in a hot spot where the scale() method ends up performing a color conversion via ColorConvertOp. Placing a debugger breakpoint on this call and debugging the code using cat1.jpg, the method is never called. So, there is something different about the color models of the two images, or there is a bug in the image reading code that is misinterpreting the image data.

  • Photoshop CS4 64bit  Slow on a Dell Covet M6400

    hello all,
i have patiently read all the posts on the forum about the slow issues and supossedly how to fix them (kapersky etc..). I have yet to be able to configure photoshop cs4 64bit to run smoothly..
    here is my config...
    Dell Precision Covet m6400
    Vista 64
    Quad-core qx9300
    8gb ram
    nvidia quadro fx 3700m 1gb
    2x320gb 7.2k drives raid 0
cs4 64 should run like a dream on this machine... it doesn't..
    What problems i get.
General refresh issues, lag, panels done't minimise maximise smoothly, can't drag layers smoothly from one document tab to another. When i try and close the document tabs they take ages to close. When i open nvidia control panel in tandem to having photoshop open to see whats going on the animated logo jitters and does not rotate smoothly when i move my mouse over it...
What i have done to try and solve the issues.
Uninstalled and re installed numerous times.
Uninstalled and re installed Dell's nvidia driver and other drivers from laptopvideo2go.
    Unistalled eset node 32 64bit
Changed gpu setting in performance menu...
    CS3 runs ok though...
please please please does anybody have any ideas on what may be the cause..?
many many thanks i'd be more than happy to test anything you have to try and sort out these issues. the 3700m is nvidias flagship mobile workstation card and photoshop should rock on it...

  • CS4: Super Slow Redraw on Windows 7

    Hello all,
Photoshop is running very slowly, even with tiny files (50k). I haven't had the need to run large CMYK files as yet, but I am guessing those will drastically slow the already molasses-like redraw. When I say redraw, it's actually the rulers that are taking the longest to render, after which the actual artwork appears.
    Photoshop settings:
Photoshop is using 75% of my system's resources
    'Available RAM' = 1603MB
    'History States' = 30
    'Cache Levels' = 4
Compatibility = Windows XP (Service Pack 2)
    Windows Settings:
Virtual memory: check (per Adobe's instructions)
    Scratch Disk: check
'Enable Open GL Drawing': check (off)
    Hardware:
    Dell Optiplex GX 620
    Intel 3.00GHz
    4.00GB RAM (3.5GB usable)
    32-bit OS (Windows 7 Ultimate)
I did not experience any problems installing Windows 7 or CS4. Neither crash or are glitchy in any other way... I spend 90% of my work day in PS, so it is mandatory, for my personal sanity and productivity, that PS run as fast or faster than when installed on XP.
I've attached screen captures of my PS preferences/performance and the Windows 7 basic info dialogs.
    Your help is appreciated!
    TIA,
    Mark

All, thank you for your replies. I apologize for the delay in responding - I have been swamped.

Change your scratch disk to D drive.
    Update your video card drivers.
your video card not up to snuff with opengl?
also why are you running CS4 in XP service pack 2 mode for?
There's plenty of space on the C drive and that's the drive PS is installed on... is there a reason I should change to D?
Video card drivers are current, however, it's a 256mb unit. I went to my local Fry's and picked up a Radeon 4670 and 500w power supply only to find that both are too big for my Dell Optiplex. Argh! Now, not only am I still lagging a little (read below for the semi-solution), but I have to stand in that dern Fry's 'returns' line.
I was trying all the different compatibility options hoping one would resolve the issue...
    Thanks again for your input.

  • FW CS4 too Slow on 64bits systems

    Has someone with this problem?
I downloaded the update for text engine and it's OK! But the SW continuous with very slow save works, and other things. It's almost impossible to work becouse the tools have 3 or 4 seconds of delay. Write text, after clicking with the text tool on the stage, I need wait 3 or 4 seconds.
    My system Dell Vostro 1500
    Core 2 Duo T5700 4MB L2 Cache
    4gb of Ram ddr2
    GF 8400 256mb
    250 Hard Disk
I'm on windows 7 RC 64bits, but on Vista 64 still slow. The version of XP 64 is so poor that I minimized
And yes, my laptop have no virus, spy or something like that. Has more than 150GB of free space.
Adobe will launch some version of FW 64bits as Photoshop CS4?

I cna't speak for the 64 bit Vista, as I am using 32, and all is fine. Hopefully, other users can assist you there.
But as for Windows 7, I doubt things will be 100% since you dealing with an older app (Fw) on a newer OS (Win7).

  • CS4 Really slow all of a sudden!

I am really struggling to work at any reasonable speed with InDesign CS4. It has been fine ever since I got it, but all of a sudden it is crawling along and it is driving me mad. I have tried using fast display, but not good.
I am running a Mac with OSX 10.5.6, Dual 2.66 Intel, and 11 gig of RAM.
Any ideas as to why InDesign is running slow? Everything else seems to be running fine.
    Thanks
    Mat

Thanks for the suggestions, they sort of have an affect, but, it all starts going pear shaped after about an hour or so.
I have switched off the preflight, colours panel and the auto correct for spelling which seem to make it last that bit longer before it starts to drag its heels, but I am finding that I am basically having to quit a couple of times a day, and also having to restart more often than I like.
To be honest, I am finding it to be a little unstable, is anybody else? The same with photoshop too...

  • JPDA debug slow, CPU low, no disk activity

I tried to debug using JPDA with a Tomcat 4.0.3 target container. If I am very patient it finally connects after some good minutes. After that it debugs, even if rather slow.
However, during those minutes nothing seems to happen. CPU is low (under 5%), and there is no disk activity.
    JDK is 1.3.1_02, W95 (yes, still), 256M.
    Any ideas?
    Thank you,
    Florin

JDK is 1.3.1_02, W95 (yes, still), 256M.JPDA is really slow in Hotspot/Classic before JDK 1.4 (it's interpreting all the bytecode vs. running it natively). Try using classic if it's available instead of hotspot, it seems to be a bit faster at debugging.
Also, if you can, try JDK 1.4. It's JVM is MUCH faster at debugging than 1.3 is.
    Hope this helps,
