ID3 tags and itunes refusing to add music to library

As my music collection is growing, I decided to organize it a bit more and fill in the different ID3 tags in windows.
I have emptied my itunes library before I did all this, and after changing the ID3 tags I added the different albums back to itunes.
However, for some reason itunes does not want to import several albums anymore, while they do play in windows media player. Furthermore, itunes refuses in many cases to make use of the new ID3 tags I made. Even after uninstalling and reinstalling itunes, itunes seems to remember my settings and the ID3 tags the different MP3s had before.
Anyone a clue what is happening here? Has it someting to do with the new version of itunes, or is it something else?
ciao, Gregorius

Hey, first of all, thanks for your help, but I'm still in problems.
I have noticed that itunes imports the music files before I alter the ID3 tags (from backup files). However, as soon as I try to add the same file to my itunes library after I have edited the ID3 file (via windows itself), itunes does not add the file to its library anymore. This is happening to a considerable amount of my music. When I try to play the same files in windows mediaplayer, they play without a problem, so I guess the problem is with itunes.
Somebody can please help me out, because I like to be in control of my music, and not itunes,

  • Itunes refuses to add files to library

I recently had a problem with my computer which forced me to reformat. before i did this, i saved all my music to DVDs, along with any files i wanted to keep. I have since reformated, added all the files from the DVDs to my computer. I have downloaded itunes, and "added folder to library" through itunes. the folder i added was the "My Music" folder, in which i saved all the music from the DVDs into. after a short while, i realised a lot of my music had not been added. when trying to add this music using "Add file to library", nothing at all happens. Also, when manually browsing the folder, and double clicking the music that has not been added (which is displayed with the little itunes symbol), itunes loads, but nothing happens. the music is not added, nor does it play. it seems to have affected mpeg4 and mp3 files. what is going on?

So you have a DTS audio DVD.
You say you've "encode the contents into 5.1 wav files which work in QT".
How did you manage to decode the DTS stream into WAV files?
How many QT files do you have?
What you should do is to let your receiver do the decoding of the DTS stream, and just get your Macbook to send that stream to the receiver via whatever TosLink adaptor you already have.
iTunes is ONLY stereo, so if you have a multichannel WAV file, it won't read it. Also, I'm sure there are restrictions on bit depth, so if you have 24 bit WAV files, I'm guessing that also won't work in iTunes.

  • Itunes does not read id3 tags and its a problem

Ok I have 60 gig of music and all of it is labeled correctly in id3 tags. But when i add them all to itunes some of the songs are blank with no information at all but if i go into "show in explorer" the information in the id3 tags instantly pops up. I'v searched google and found nothing so i hope someone can tell me a fix or another program to use that will organise my music like itunes does and also can put music on my ipod. So please help me with the problem.
    Thanks

It doesn't work. I'v already tried that. I'v even tried converting the id3 tags and then removing them from the libray and adding them again. Still nothing. It might help if someone could tell me where itunes gets it information for its tags when you add music to its libray seeing as it doesn't use id3 tags for the information like any smart program does.

I loaded iTunes on a new laptop. I copied and pasted my albums to a 4G stick and down loaded them to the new laptop. Placing them in, Libraries – Music – iTunes and than in Itunes used File – add file to library. So far so good. For what ever reason one of the CDs would not load onto the stick. I got the orginal CD and loaded directly to Itunes. Now when I look in  Libraries – Music – iTunes it’s not there but it is in and plays in iTunes. What should I have done or should I be doing? Thanks.

It's not a unique situation - happens all the time, smaller hard drives getting filled up.
It's also easy to fix. I just moved my itunes content to a bigger hard drive.
First I made a backup of the itunes database file - iTunes Library.itl. Just in case anything went wrong.
Nothing did go wrong, but I'd have it in case anything DID go wrong. That file holds ratings, playcounts, Date Added, and other metadata.
Second, in itunes change the preferences > advanced tab to tell itunes to put everything on G:
Set the itunes folder location to something like G:Media or G:iTunes
This will affect all FUTURE additions to itunes and not do anything to the existing locations.
Make sure the checkbox for "Keep itunes organized" is NOT checked. I also left the "Copy files when adding" unchecked.
Third, to move all the files to G: without itunes losing the paths, run the File > Library > Organize > Consolidate command. This will need to run a while, so be patient as it copies all the files to the new G: location. This does NOT delete the originals. You will have to do that.
Fourth, make sure everything in itunes is OK and you can play stuff in your library. If you're really cautious you can run a script to check for missing/dead tracks.

  • ID3 tags and Nee

Sorry if this has been asked before or is really obvious :P
I have a Zen Neeon and the currently playing song appears on the screen as only a title. There is no artist. All my songs are tagged with ID3 v and 2. The only way I can get the player to scroll Artist - Title is by removing all ID3 tags and having the filename be Artist - Title.mp3 (it does not display the .mp3 extension when playing a track). Is this the way it works? I was under the impression from the FAQs and a little snooping that Zens could read ID3 tags? Obviously they can because it gets the track title information out fine, but not the artist. Is there a simple option I'm missing?
Edit: .0 firmware and using Winamp to edit my ID3 tags, put the songs on the player by drag and drop in ExplorerMessage Edited by SR on 08-3-2006 03:53 PM

  • Converting ID3 tags on iTunes/Folder problems

I just go my nano and am setting up the music files I've been collecting over the years, some of which don't have ID3 tags.
It seems when I load my libray it automatically converts the files, but it drops them into their own folder (artist, album name etc).
I would rather keep all my music files in the one root directory for easier access. Can anyone tell how I can do that through iTunes?
I've gone to the Preferences --> Advanced page and set up my iTunes folder and checked the "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library" box.
But when I add the files on the library, it sets up these folders I don't want.
    Thanks

] I would rather keep all my music files in the one root directory
Disable "Keep iTunes Music folder Organized" & "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to Library" in iTunes Preferences, Advanced tab. Future files added to the library will stay right where they came from. The setting for "Music folder location" will only apply to new imports from CD and music purchases through the store. Setting this value to an existing folder of music will not tell iTunes to "discover" the music that already lives there.
iTunes relies exclusively on ID3 tags. If your files don't include tags, then you need to get a 3rd party tag utility like "Tag & Renamer" or "ID3-TagIt" and get those V2.3 tags loaded into all your files. Those utilities can even generate the tags based on the folder names containing the files.

  • ID3 tags and song order

I recently got a new car with a hard drive to store music on. I've imported several gigs of music, but on some of the albums the tracks are listed in alphabetical order. I've gone in to make sure all the information is correct in the tags, including the track order. I've also made sure the actual filenames are in order, i.e. "01 - song 1", "02 - song 2" and so forth, but they still show up alphabetically. It seems to be random, but occurs more often on .m4a files. It happens on some of the music I've purchased from the iTunes store, but not all. Is there something I'm missing?

Ok, I think I found the problem. It's not with how either of the devices are sorting the music. On the albums that show up in alphabetical order, there are no actual ID3 tags. When I right click on any of the songs, there is no option to "Convert ID3 tags" like there is on the music that shows up in the correct order. This even includes music I purchased directly from iTunes. However, iTunes is still displaying the track order, album info, etc. How can I fix this?

  • Problem with ID3 tags in iTunes

I was hoping that I could get some clarification on how iTunes uses ID3 tags with mp3s. The problem I am having is that I have fixed all the ID3 tags on my mp3s using another program (Tag & Rename is the name of the program, it does both v1 and v2 ID3 tags) but iTunes still doesn't recognize the changes I have made. I have tried deleting my entire library, and readding all the songs, but for some reason it still has the wrong information. I tried opening the files with other music players, and they read the ID3 tags fine.
    Thanks in advance!
I don't know if this helps, but the most noticable program is with my compilations. I changed all the artists to the actual artist name instead of "Various" that it used to say, but iTunes still reports the artist as "Various".

I routinely change file names, change ID3 tags, and edit existing tracks using external programs. Once done, all I do is to double click the track in iTunes to ensure it reads updated ID3 tag info correctly from the track.
    1. iTunes reads track info from the file everytime you play a track and saves any changes that you have made through external software to its internal database at "C:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl" and "iTunes Music Library.xml". As an alternative to playing, you could also press Ctrl-I to display track info, at which time it reads updated info from the track and displays it.
    2. If the filename has been changed for a track, iTunes prompts you to point to the right filename. When done, it populates ID3 tag info, while retaining the playcount and rating.
    Hope this helps.

  • Which version of ID3 tags does iTunes 9 use?

Hi, which version of ID3 tags does iTunes 9 use?

I'm with you on the multiple tags issue. I'd just assumed if iTunes rips with v2.2 and then you get it to convert to v2.3 the file would have just the one tag. Otherwise why not call the feature *Add v2.3 tag?* Anyway there I go again expecting logic when I should know better.

  • An mp3 file on my computer will not import to itunes by either the drag-and-drop or the Add File to Library method.  Can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.  My OS is Windows 7.

I purchased an mp3 from a private website on my laptop.  The itunes library i sync ipod to is on my desktop, so i copied the mp3 onto a flash drive and then into my desktop in the Downloads folder and Desktop folder as well as the itunes music folder, 3 places.  I opened itunes on the desktop and read the instructions for importing music that's already in my computer.  Neither the drag-and-drop or the Add File to Library method works.  I've tried both ways over and over.  Cannot figure out what the problem is.  I do note that the name of the mp3 file doesn't show the .mp3 extension, it appears as simply it's title, Eating Healthy, without any extension at all.  Could the filename be the problem, or do you have any other idea what I'm doing wrong?  My OS is Windows 7, using IE9.  Thanks.
ADDENDUM AFTER READING ANOTHER DISCUSSION HERE:  I have now tried right clicking the song in Windows Explorer and choosing Open With, clicking itunes.  The mp3 plays in itunes but does not add to the library.

I don't have a Recently Added playlist.  However, I discovered that the file I had named Eating Healthy was given the name You Can Enjoy Eating Healthy when it copied to iTunes.  I'm guessing iTunes pulled the full name of the piece from the internet.  Upshot--the mp3 did transfer to iTunes on all 3 tries, but I was looking in my alphabetized list under E, not Y, so I didn't see it there.  Thanks for your help.

  • ITunes refuse to import music etc

First, i tried to import a song that I wanted, and iTunes refuse to import it.
At first, i thought i was alright and i synced, it synced DOUBLE of ALL the music.
Tried to remove and failed, checked the "Sync only checked music", doesn't work.
When i go over to the music tab, there is only Sync music, if not its Selected Playlist etc. How do we actually choose what music we want to sync? How do i solve the problem of iTunes not importing my music?

I am having the a very similar problem.
iTunes will not sync music to any of my devices since 8.0.2
I also use the option "sync only checked songs".

  • ITunes changing the ID3 tags and deleting music after syncing or opening

After syncing (or opening iTunes), iTunes changes the tags in about 25% of my music (this time it was about 90% affected). It removes the total track number on some of the songs. This has been a consistent problem. I noticed that it also actually erased some of my music, random tracks in my library are now missing (gone in windows explorer also). I have reformatted my iPod and restored it, it's not that. What is going on!! Going through and fixing 7500 songs every time I sync is ******* me off
Here is a picture of what it is doing: removing the total track on some songs
    http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u233/jupiterssj4/itunes.jpg
Forgot to mention that it also copied the artist field data to the album artist field... had to erase all of those too

Mine is doing the exact same thing. It happens every time I click on a song. Weird letter-number strings are inserted into the Comments field, my album art is gone, and the track numbers are messed up.
I've tried upgrading to the new iTunes. I tried reinstalling iTunes. I turned off my soundcheck option and deleting potentially comprised files. Nothing's worked.
I've tried emailing Apple directly and got no help. Anyone know what's going on???

  • ITunes, ID3 Tags, and Metadata

    Oh hai der!
I'm new and I'm so sorry if this questioned has been answered before. But I've done some research on the web and I've got some questions about iTunes and what it does to my music.
First, here's my situation. I love iTunes, it's awesome, helps me edit my library beautifully. But that's only when all the songs, movies, videos, and so on have their information. Otherwise it's a huge mess. Which is what I'm dealing with.
I like to use XBMC. I own a Samsung Galaxy S2, and an iPod Touch. The files I've edited and whose data I've put in manually, show up wonderfully on my iPod. But not my Samsung and media library software, or other device. I was wondering if iTunes actually edits the metadata and ID3 tags of the actual file in my computer. Not just in the iTunes program. See, let's say I have a song titled "Track 01 ", and in iTunes I change the name of the track to "Yesterday". Will iTunes actually edit the title of the song WITHIN the file itself? Or just in iTunes itself? So that after I edit the title within iTunes, it shows up in other software, such as XBMC, and devices like my Galaxy S2 as "Yesterday" and not "Track 01"?
I don't get my music from iTunes. I've only got a few albums from iTunes, that's it. But for the rest, they're not from iTunes. It may not sound like a lot to most of you. But I've got a library that's over 50GB's large in music. That's over 8,000 songs. Only about 1,000 of those songs have their data such as lyrics, artwork, artist, album,  and so on. But for the rest of the 7,000 songs, it's just a mess. I've looked up many programs that edit my library for me. But I'm in a situation where I can't spend much money. So I'm looking for freeware. But that's not all.
I'm looking for a piece of software that'll implement lyrics, artwork, album, artist, etc, into the song file itself. Or just in iTunes? I know of TuneUp, and Rinse My Music. I was wondering if there was other software out there? I've also heard of Beets, but it seems way too complicated for me to install properly.
So to summarize, what I want to know is:
    1) Is there some freeware out there that'll help me edit my iTunes library?
    2) Does editing song info within iTunes actually do anything to the song file itself?
    3) Will I have to use some other software that organizes my media and actually edits a file's properties to display proper data?

  • ID3 Tags and Music Sort

My mp3 ID3 tags are all messed up here and there. As I fix them in MediaSOurce, the "file" stays where it is and cannot be moved to where it belongs (in the appropriate folder). Any idea on how to move files around that are on the player?

Not sure if this is the same thing the OP is talking about, but I have a similar problem with my Zen Xtra. Mediasource doesn't seem to want to let me edit tag info (except track number) for music that's on the player- which gets annoying if I'm trying to correct the genre for something or combine entries for "Smashing Pumpkins" and "The Smashing Pumpkins." The only workaround I've found is to edit the tags for the files on my hard dri've, then re-transfer them to the player, which I'm usually too lazy to do. Is there some more efficient way to do this?
