Id3 tags notes or comments field

I have MP3 files that contain ID3 tags with Comments fields that contain information. When inserted into iTunes library these show up with a blank Notes field. I don't see a Comments field available, so I assume that Notes is the label given that same field by iTunes. However, the content is not displayed.
By the way, I access those fields by right clicking on the song, picking Get Info, then going to the Info tab.
Any clues as to how to get the Notes/Comments field imported or displayed correctly?

Notes? I don't have a Notes field -- I DO have a Comment field.
iTunes support for Comments fields is spotty. It does not support the short description field according to the ID3 specification; maybe it uses an older spec -- to be honest I'm not familiar will all of the ID3 specs, since there are several versions and they all have differences.

  • My ID3 tags not being recognized by iTunes 10.2.2

Can't quite find my unique problem on this board so hopefully someone can help me.
I have imported a lot of MP3 files into iTunes, successfully, which have v2.4 ID3 tags on them. I screwed up the song titles on one (Grateful Dead) show, and all songs came in titled '04'...
I deleted the files in iTunes (and asked iTunes to remove the files as well), fixed up the ID3 tags in the originals, and reimported. But, titles are still '04'!?
Since my music library is on my Linux box and I am mounting and importing from there, I thought maybe something was getting cached so I copied the whole album directory over to my iMac, but still I get the same '04' title for every song.
I also changed the Album attribute in the ID3 tags, but that is still also coming out the old (wrong) way.
It is as if iTunes has some sort of 'fingerprint' of the songs and refuses to recognize the ID3 tags.
This is on OS X 10.6.7 on iTunes 10.2.2, so I'm up to date on all software. And, I've imported A TON of shows like this without issue, it otherwise works just fine.
Anyone ever see this weird problem before?

    Sorry, should have been clearer.
The first time I applied the ID3 tags my script for parsing the artist, album and track names from the directory name hierarchy and filenames (e.g. ~/Music/<artist>/<album>/<track number>-<filename>), my script had a bug and all ID3 'title' values were set to the month number of the concert (04 = April).
So, the first time I imported into iTunes, all tracks were titled '04'. I deleted those in iTunes, fixed my script, but now despite apparently having correct ID3 tags, all songs continue to be named '04'. I also changed the album value to, changing from 'Hartford 04262010' to 'Hartford Apr 26, 2010', but again the original value appears to be "sticky", and despite the apparently revised ID3 tag, the album name also is the same as the first time I imported (i.e. Hartford 04262010).
Like I said, it appears that iTunes is somehow caching the original values and not recognizing the new / revised ID3 tags.

  • [SOLVED] ID3 tags not registering on MP3 Player

I just got a new MP3 player, and some of the ID3 tags that I've set on my music don't register. I have some other songs that were set on a Windows computer; these show up perfectly find. Every tag editor I've ever used has this problem.
What is a way to convert the ID3 tags into a format that my mp3 player (a coby MP826-8G) will be able to understand?
EDIT: Duh, I was using id3v2 instead of id3v1. Apparently most hardware music players don't read id3v2 yet.

indeed, the tracks do have both v1.x and v2.x tags. Obviously, iTunes only accepts v1.1 tags. v2.x tags or mp3, who have both tags attached, will not be displayed in iTunes.
I have deleted the v2.x from the problem mp3-files using the "mp3tag" - tool. After re-importing the files into iTunes,
    everything was fine.
    Thanks,

  • Changing ID3 Tags - not updating?

    Hi
I am updating Artist, Title information within iTunes - but for some reason the changes are not being reflected in the file ID3 tags?
some of my files are updating and others are not?
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance?

How are you examining the ID3 tags? Maybe whatever program you're using to look at them is caching the information, and not checking the tags when you look at the file a second time?

  • ID3 Tags Not Being Recognized

Okay, so I have a problem and I am racking my brain trying to figure it out.
Itunes isn't recognizing some of my music's ID3 tags. Worst part is I used Itunes to convert every song I have to ID3 v 2.4, but there's still a handful that aren't been recognized. I used Media Monkey to aid in my tagging. For further pain listen to this. I also just updated from Itunes 6 or whatever to 7.4.1.1.1.1 or whatever the **** it's at now, and it went from about 7 albums to like 30 that itune's won't recognize the ID3 tags for.
For more help look at this image. Showing an example of how all my songs have and Artist, Album, and more set to them, but ITunes won't pick it up. Any idea how to fix this guys?

Hi guys. If your music is in MP3 format, try downloading this program: http://www.download.com/Mp3-Tag-Tools/3000-2141_4-10106717.html
Then click file > open directory. Find the folder that holds your music and click open. Make sure 'recurse subdirectories' is ticked so that it opens everything within the folder. This can take quite a while if you have a lot of music.
Once all your files have loaded, press Ctrl+A to select all of your music files and then press F7. This duplicates whatever is in your ID3V2.X tags onto the ID3V1.1 tags.
For iTunes to take notice of any tag changes you make in this program, the file either has to be played or re-uploaded into iTunes which can also take a while depending on how much music you have, but once you've done that, iTunes should start recognising your tags.
    Hope this helps!

  • Spreadsheet notes or comments field???

Sorry if this question is already answered; I searched but could not find it, if the topic does exist could you point me there to save forum time. Otherwise, I would like to know the work-around for adding notes or comments to Appleworks spreadsheet cells; as you can do with other spreadsheets which is indicated by a little coloured triangle in the corner of the cell.
    Thanks for you help.
    Brian.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions Brian
The spreadsheet in AppleWorks does not have some of the "bells & whistles" of a dedicated spreadsheet program. But you could easily use text boxes for notes or comments. Click the red tool box in the lower left of your document if the tool panel isn't showing then click on the "A" text tool, click on the spreadsheet & start typing. To move & reshape the text boxes, click the arrow tool & click the box to select & then move it.

  • ID3 Tags Not displaying

    Good Morning all,
I just imported a few hundered songs (MP3's converted from flacs) into iTunes and set up the artists, albums, genre, track #, etc. for each song. When I look at the songs in the music folder, these new song's tags do not display. I have several thousand songs and almost all of them have these tags displaying properly in the folder's columns. However, these songs do not. Is there a way to get the tags I entered in iTunes to show up for these songs in the folder without having to manually edit each one (there are hundereds)? I have never had this problem before. In the past whenever I edited a song in iTunes, the updated tags showed in my folder just fine. I am using windeows Vista. Any thoughts?

No one has any information on these?

  • Tags from 'Comments' field in Windows Explorer don't show up in iTunes

I have thousand of files where I allready put tags directly in the comments field in the files proberties in Windows Explorer, but the tags don't show up in iTunes comments field?
I can then manually put tags directly in iTunes comments field and they will not show up in the proberties of the files in Windown Explorer!
So I ask, why on earth aren't those fields (in iTunes and in Windows Explorer) compatible, when all other fields (for example name, artist, year) are compatible?

Okay, thanks for replies and for your time, but the problem continues.
First: I've ripped CD's in different ways (before starting to use iTunes). I've used Nero, Windows Media Player, Lame and imported mp3 files directly from the internet. Some files have been through Flash Renamer and TigoTago. After importing the files I've tagged them with comments and other stuff directly in Windows Explorer. And then I decided to use iTunes because of buying iPods and playing music through AirPort Express.
What I've tried to right now:
I've tried to check files with MP3Val, but it said the files were OK.
Then I tried - with another laptop - to install I new iTunes program (English language to be sure and there after I imported/ripped a new CD using iTunes to import. Before importing I put a tag in the Comments field in iTunes and it never showed up in Windows Explorer Comment field. I also tried after that to put tags directly in Windows Explorer Comment field and add the files once again to iTunes library, but again, no comments in iTunes. Also again put tags in iTunes, but no tags in Windows Explorer.
Then I did more or less the same using Realplayer to import the CD, but with the same negative results.
*Then I went back to my old laptop, imported a CD using iTunes and then tagged the comment field in Windows Explorer and suddenly I got comments in iTunes! But the comments look like this: "00000000 00000210 000008E8 0000000000775908 00000000 0040E5E1 00000000 00000000 00000000 00000000 00000000 00000000".*
I don't know what to do with this?
And apparently, it's only when importing new files using iTunes to rip the CD, that this happens. Otherwise, nothing happens at all.

  • IPhoto still won't make web pages using the comments field

I am someone who makes use of the comments field in iPhoto. I don't edit the title, because I thought it edited the photo file name (perhaps only in earlier iPhoto versions). Unfortunately, the Apple's tools for making a web page from iPhoto '08 seem to still use the title field only and not the comment field. That means that I have to edit all titles (to blank or a proper title) if I just want to show an annotation on just a few photos in a web page. At least the comments field defaults to blank, so I normally use it, along with the Better HTML plugin to make web pages, http://www.geeksrus.com/software/betterhtmlexport/
Now, the web pages produced by Apple are now as good as and even better than the BHTML templates, and I'd like to use them. But this problem with the comments means I can't quickly convert my old photo albums to something that makes nice web pages using my annotations with the iPhoto tools.
Does anybody know of any solutions to this problem? E.g. a script to copy the comments field to the title field?

I know what you mean. I can't believe that after so many versions of iPhoto that have supported publishing of some sort that such a basic and obvious feature still hasn't been implemented. It can't take that much effort to add. I'd rather have that than the new (and IMHO completely useless) "Events" feature. Speaking of which, does anyone know if there is a way to turn it off? It's annoying the heck outta me. I hate it.

  • MP3 song information not retained after iTunes 7.0 - ID3 tags at fault?

I'm having some strange problems with track information in iTunes. I first noticed it when I tried to copy some mp3's from my Mac to my mobile phone: certain tracks did not retain the song information, like artist, album etc., while others did.
A similar problem has been discussed in this post:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=3698498
However, my problem seems to be a little bit more specific.
If I look at the music in my library in iTunes, all the track information is there. However, for MP3's encoded after 16th October last year, the "Imported With" field, using Get Info, is shown as "Unknown". Before this date, it is shown as "iTunes v7.0". For all MP3's the ID3 version is v2.2.
I believe that I must have upgraded to iTunes 7.0.1 around this time, since I have a number of Apple Lossless audio files which have also been imported and don't show this problem.
The main problem is with the file ID3 tag information (I think). If I select one of the problem tracks, find the original file, open it up in Quicktime and "Get Info", no track/album/artist/composer information is displayed. This is NOT true for 1) MP3's encoded before 16th October 2006 and 2) Apple Lossless files encoded at any time.
In other words, the track information for songs encoded with iTunes 7.0.1 and later is either encoded in a way that no other application can read, OR is only being stored in the iTunes playlist, NOT the file itself. I can see all the track information for these problem files on my iPod, but NOT my mobile phone (where I have to manually copy them over), even if I drag and drop them directly from iTunes.
I have this problem with Quicktime, my mobile phone music player and RealPlayer, so I'm assuming it's "system wide". It even occurs if I copy a problem file out of my music folder and onto the the Desktop, then manually add the track to iTunes: all the song information has disappeared.
I have all my music stored on an external hard disk - 160GB Freecom ToughDrive formatted as HFS+. Previously it was stored on an external disk formatted as FAT32, but copying the files over to the new disk didn't change the problem.
I considered using the "convert ID3 tags" option to see if it would make a difference, but both the good and bad files are listed as using v2.2. I also don't understand enough about them to feel confident converting them to something different - perhaps to v2.3 or v2.4 - just to see if it makes a difference.
Any information on how to "recover" the missing information (for anything other than iTunes) would be greatly appreciated!
    MacBook Pro 17" 2.16 GHz 2GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   iTunes 7.1.1

Okay, some more information as I try and track down the source of the problem.
By using an id3 tag editing program - ID3 Editor - I was able to view the song information for each track, even though all the other music players I had tried would not show it. If I then chose to modify and update the ID3 information, this would somehow modify the tags in such a way that they become readable in all other programs.
I tried using the "Convert ID3" tags option in iTunes, just on a whim, but without any success. Saving the song information in ID3 Editor doesn't change the version of the ID3 tag - it's still listed as v2.2 in iTunes - but it DOES make it readable in other programs. I also tried the various text conversion options, again without any success.
This looks to me like a bug in iTunes. While its possible for me to get around it, in an extremely long winded way, I still can't understand why iTunes would be writing ID3 information that other Apple programs cannot read.
Any suggestions? Should I be posting this question in a different forum perhaps?

  • How do you force itunes comments to ID3 tags in MP3 files?

I have comments all throughout itunes. The mp3 files do not have those comments in the ID3 info.
How do you force itunes comments to write out to ID3 tags in MP3 files?
The folder and files all have write permission.

Yeah, don't do that, you probably also degrade the sound quality... If you've confirmed it is something odd with multiple tags try this.
Select a group of mp3 files (You might want to start with a smart playlist so you don't mess with any other format)
Right-click and use Convert ID3 Tags > None (may need to repeat this step if multiple tags)
Then right-click and use Convert ID3 Tags > v2.3 (v2.4 support still patchy from various accounts)
Downside is that it will lose any embedded artwork, but it should preserve all other meta-data, both tag-based and stored within the library itself.
In fact, if you use my CreateFolderArt script before and after updating the tags it should archive any artwork as a local Folder.jpg image for each album and then reinsert that image on the subsequent run... Check it out on a single album first. If it doesn't work as expected let me know and I'll tweak the script to achieve this end.

  • Is it possible to view ".mp3" files in Mavericks "Tags" windows by file name (rather than the info in the "name" field of it's ID3 tag)?

    Short version:
When viewing ".mp3" files in a "Tags" window, the information in the "name" column next to the file defaults to the information in the "song" field in the file's ID3 tag.
Is it possible to change have the "name" column display the actual FILE NAME instead?
I did some research and found nothing.
    Long version
    Let's say I have a ".mp3" file named "Todd Rundgren - Hello It's Me.mp3"
When I open the folder this ".mp3" is in and find the file, the "name" column will read "Todd Rundgren - Hello It's Me.mp3" (of course)
Now, I tag the file "jams"
Now I go to my "jams" tag view everything tagged "jams", the "name" column in that window DOES NOT say
"Todd Rundgren - Hello It's Me.mp3" , but instead just "Hello It's Me"
The finder seems to be pulling this information from the "name" field of the ".mp3" ID3 tag metadata (aka, the information that would be written in the "name" column when viewing the file in iTunes.)
Ok, that's fine Mavericks, but I want to see the ACTUAL FILE NAME of my ".mp3", (which "tags" windows seems to do for most other things [documents, folders])
Q: Is it possible to display the filename of a ".mp3" file when viewing a "tag window?"
Tags are super useful, but this inconsistency makes it inefficient, distracting, and confusing to move freely between the window for a given "tag", and a normal "finder" window.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

I think you have to avoid editing inside the tags list with the 'metadata names'. Instead right click an item, select 'Open enclosing folder'.
In 'real folders' you can enable the 'Title' in column via the 'Veiw Menu > show columns', that way you can see the file name & ID3/ EXIF titles.
'Fake folders' (smart searches & the recent tags list) don't feel finished yet IMO.

  • Artwork, podcast notes and editing ID3 tags

    Hello
I'm trying to get to a point where information about the content of my show appears on the iPod, in iTunes and any other podcatching application/mp3 player. In my case that would be a artist/track listing of the music featured on my podcast.
I tried editing the ID3 tags under the 'media' tab in Libsyn by inserting the artist/track listing into the comments box but that didn't work. I then read about how to edit the ID3 tags using iTunes but that seemed to refer to editing the tags in a dowloaded podcast and not the tags on a podcast uploaded to Libsyn's server.
So, how do I edit my ID3 tags to achieve the results I'm looking for?
Oh.....and I'm also trying to do that thing where my logo will appear in iTunes and on an iPod when the podcast is playing but I'm not having much luck there either. I can't get the logo to appear in my iPod at all. I'm able to get it to appear in the flip section at the top of iTunes but shouldn't it also be in the bottom left hand corner of the iTunes window?
    Thanks
    Neil

I tried editing the ID3 tags under the 'media' tab in
Libsyn by inserting the artist/track listing into the
comments box but that didn't work. I then read about

When you edit the ID3 tags in iTunes, the information is stored in the file. When this file is subsequently uploaded to a server, and then downloaded by a user, the tags carry through and are available to the user's iTunes/iPod. So you need to use iTunes to add whatever ID3 tags you want before uploading your file.
    Hope this helps,
    Greg.

  • Can not edit id3 tags since upgrade to iTunes 8.1: permissions problem (?)

    Hi all,
I am angry at myself for having upgraded to 8.1 before I knew that it's ok, and angry at Apple releasing this update with too many problems. Here is my list:
    (1) I cannot change ID3 tags within iTunes for certain tracks. I usually click on one or several tracks, press Command+i for information, then change the desired tags (e.g. genre, album, etc.) and click ok. Only that iTunes won't let me write anything. I found that I have no longer write permission to exactly these tracks (my music is on an external LaCie Firewire800 HD). What I did so far:
    - I tried to run "Repair permissions" on the internal HD.
    - I clicked on the iTunes music folder on the external hard drive, opened the information window and changed under "Sharing & Permissions" the rights to read&write for my user account. I clicked on "Apply to enclosed items", which should set the permissions to all elements within the folder.
Any ideas? My system is freshly installed (~3weeks old), everything is updated.
    (2) Probably related to (1): certain files and documents on my internal hard drive have wrong permissions. Firefox for example is locked as read only, and I cannot update it via the "Check for update" in the help menu. I know there is an update available, as I am using 3.0.6 and the newest is 3.0.8. Repair permissions did not help. See the screen shot for the grayed out "Check for updates" menu entry.
    http://img18.imageshack.us/img18/6567/picture2rxl.png
    (3) In iTunes, I have a smart playlist in which all songs rated with four or more stars are gathered. I found songs in this list that I did not rate yet, and they all have odd "empty" stars in comparison to the songs I rated myself. What's up with that? See screenshot, some of the songs of the album "I love Jazz" have these odd stars:
    http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/8702/picture1zkg.png

That's exactly what I did, it took ~20sec to complete the "apply to enclosed items" command (there was heavy disk access), but it does not improve. The permissions stay the same for the files/folders in question. It's very odd, have a look at the screenshot:
Some folders have correct permissions, others (to which I have no access through iTunes) show "admin" twice as the only user who is allowed to write. Repair permission does not help. I have hundreds of files/folders where permissions are wrong, only since the upgrade recently.

  • Editing ID3 tags in the finder (not in itunes/quicktime)

Hi. New mac user. Just wondering if there was any way to edit the ID3 tags of an mp3 file within the finder's 'get info' section (as compared to windows' 'properties' section). If not (which I'm pretty sure there isn't), what would be the best way to go about doing so? Keeping in mind that I want to be able to do it before I import the file into iTunes.

you can't do it from finder. you can open it in VLC player and do it from there (press command+i in VLC).
