ID3 Tags won't write to file

I recently received a disc from a friend, the disc had 16 songs on it, with no ID3 Tag info. I went through and added the missing info manually using the "Get Info" option from the file in iTunes & hit OK, but when I was done, the files look complete in iTunes, but the original file copied to the hard drive was unchanged. When I used iTunes 10, it used to rewrite the ID tags for the file on my hard drive with the changed info via iTunes. I double checked to make sure that I "Let iTunes Organize" my files and folders. I've looked through threads, googled, etc, and I have NO clue what to do, or even if I did something. Help!
On a side note, where is the "Power Search" in the iTunes Store? That seems to be a never ending question floating around the threads as well.

i'd normally think about access permissions as iTunes will fail silently if it can't write out the updated tag however the fact that Winamp can manage it suggests another problem.
It may be that the files have multiple tags. It used to be common to add both a v1.x & v2.x tag and in theory multiple tags can be used to support different languages. iTunes likes a single tag and may silently fail when it tries to write the data back to the track, thus doing nothing without reporting an error. Next time you access the file the library will update to reflect the true values in the tag. For what it's worth I believe it's recommended to use ID3v2.3 tags with iTunes.
MP3Validator may be all you need, but if not try using the iTunes option *Convert ID3 Tags... > None* say 3 times in a row, then *Convert ID3 Tags... > v2.3* to see if that creates a situation in which your edits can hold.

  • ID3 tags won't save

I've noticed that a few songs that I've imported have incorrect ID3 tags, so I go to "Get Info" to fix them. When I click OK, everything looks good, but as soon as I play the file it goes back to the original tag. I've tried changing the tag and sorting options and made everything the same, but nothing seems to work. Once I open the file in Winamp and edit the tag there, iTunes recognizes the new tag, but I am unable to directly edit AND save the tags through iTunes.
    For example:
I try to change the tag from "Original artist name - original track title" to
    "Artist - Title"
Clicking OK makes it look right, but as soon as I double click the song to play it, it goes right back to "Original artist name - original track title".
This isn't the case with every file, though; some can be edited with no problems. I've made sure the non-working files have been converted to ID3v2.2. None of the files are stored in my iTunes Music folder, and none are DRM protected.

  • ID3 tags won't change...

    Hi everyone,
i've a problem with my mp3 tags, i'm trying to organize my library trough updating the ID3 tags but it won't work.
For example, I've 2 artists: ACDC and AC/DC, when I change the info artist into ACDC, it won't change anything and i'll still have both names aperaing.
Worse, on some compilation, in my iphone, the album nam will appear as many times as there is songs... if I've 20 songs in an album called "Compilation 1" for example, the album "Compilation 1" will appear 20 times in my iphone list...
    any idea?
    thanks

seems very likely to me. - but I've never tried that. That's worth a seperate topic here, perhaps someone who's used one could reply, Barring that, See below (for a way to test)

No removing the program won't do anything to your music.  After you reinstall itunes first try copying a few songs to default location on your internal HD,  and see if problem still exists (make sure iTunes is pointed to it) THEN reestablish the external,
PS: I forgot to ask Does your iTunes Prefs > Advanced Tab show the correct path to your media folder? Do you have the "Copy files to Media Folder when adding... "  checked?
Warning: I don't know about iTunes Match: but I would definitely turn off all Automatic updating (everywhere iTunes, iPhone etc ) while you're messing with this.

  • Changing id3 tags from iTunes to original file

Hi! I have been changing a lot of id3 tags to the files through iTunes but it doesn't change it for the original file. Is there anyway to make that work? Thanks!

If by original you mean another copy of the file left outside the iTunes media folder while iTunes is working with a copy made during import then iTunes has no further interest in the originals.
If you mean that changes made to metadata in iTunes don't appear to be reflected when the same file is viewed in Windows Explorer or if the file is imported into a new library then the most likely cause of this is multiple embedded tags. iTunes works best when there is a single id3v2.3 tag. Select a couple of test files, right-click and use Convert ID3 Tags > None, repeat two or three times, then Convert ID3 Tags > ID3v2.3. Now see if updates are properly carried through. You'll have to reapply any embedded artwork. If it works repeat with other problem files.
For the future backup your library regularly with this User Tip.

  • ID3 tags won't convert!

I just learned that you can convert ID3 tags to Unicode right in iTunes. I used to use Unicode Rewriter, but now I can't convert them in either - it just stays the same! I don't know what's different in my computer now, but I did a complete system restore from my recovery partition since then! Please help! Thanks in advance.

    version 7.5
and yes, I did verify/repair permissions with the utility disc.
    Should I not have?

  • ID3 tags won't upd

I have a Zen Micro and organise the downloads via WM0 because I find it easier to use than Creative's MediaSource software. This is generally fine but I've noticed that, even if I delete a track from the player, edit the tag info in WM0's Library feature and then download it again, the Zen Micro display often shows the old tag information. This is particularly annoying if I've sourced a track via a compilation (e.g. 'Sega Mega-Funk 2' or some such inanity) or if the artist is listed differently across two sources - e.g. 'Grandmaster Flash' and 'Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Fi've'. Has anyone got a solution to this problem?
    Thanks
    Joel

Strange. I can think of a couple of reasons why it might do this () the changes aren't being saved back into the file in the right way, so try a 3rd party tagging program instead of WMP0 and see if it works (2) the Zen's library is somehow remembering the data, but this seems very odd and I doubt it.

  • ID3 Tags - Won't remember new info

I looked around and couldn't find any posts about this topic.
When I edit tags in iTunes 7.0 and 7.0.1, the information is not remembered.
I have spent time changing tags. Then I drop the original file back in iTunes and all my work is gone. The old info is still there and none of my changes are saved. All was fine in iTunes 6.
    Any ideas?

I suspect that you have iTunes set to "copy files when importing".
You import the the files into iTunes, and iTunes makes a copy of them in whatever directory you have specified. When you edit the tags it edits the file in the directory you have specified as the iTunes music directory. Then when you copy in your original file again it overwrites the one in your music library.

  • Flash Player won't write .SOL file

Using a downloaded flash player application (game called
telescope from www.dyson.uk.com) on three different computers. All
computers running XP professions SP2 and logged in with
administrator permissions on all three. One computer (my home
desktop) creates the directories to save the current game status
but does not create and save the .sol file. The other two computers
save the file and keep the game status correctly. I've checked .sol
permissions in the registry and they are correct. I've tried
deleting and re downloading the application file. I've tried
transfering one of the .sol files from one of the working computers
and the bad computer finds it but still won't update it. I've tried
deleting the sub- directories from "documents and
settings/me/applicaton data/Macromedia/" as well as searching for
other instances of the .sol files but no luck. Why would the same
game work on two computers but not on the third one? Any responses,
inspired or otherwise, are most welcome.

Hi Andy, that is correct, they don't support PPC Macs anymore.
You should first uninstall any previous version of Flash Player, using the uninstaller from here (make sure you use the correct one!):
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/865/cpsid_86551.html#prob1=uninst,os=m10.6,
    Download this if you haven't...
    http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/installers/archive/fp10.1.102.6 4_and_9.0.289.0archive.zip
Once downloaded if it doesn't unzip automatically the double click on that file.
Look for the fp10.1.102.64_and_9.0.289.0archive folder, open it, look for the Flash Player 10.1.102.64 folder & open and look for 101r10264 folder & open it, double click on the flashplayer101r102_64_ubmac.dmg file, choose the Install Adobe Flash Player file to install... they don't make it easy!

  • Artwork saved in the ID3 tags as part of the file

Is there a way to check that the correct artwork is saved to the file. I have problems with getting the actual artwork to connect to the file.
I experience that even when I update the artowrk the old ordwork is coming back.
I use iTunes for windows latest version together with iTunes Match.
    Thx

    Kstrid,
To get unambiguous results in iTunes and any other player where you may use the file:
One and only one art per file.  Before you add new art, delete the old one first.
Make sure it is embedded in the file itself.  Pasting into the Artwork tab of Get Info accomplishes this.  Using the Get Album Artwork command of iTunes does not.
Don't trust anything you see in Albums view.

  • Is there a reason why my ID3 tags won't update in the artist view in the music app?

I've never had a problem with messing with them manually in itunes before until iOS 5. For example, I don't like to see an artist repeated in the artist list, so I go through and edit all the songs at one to make sure that artist appears only once. I've tried doing it with the new OS but nothing updates. It's even gone so far as to completely omit any new artists that I have added. Anyone else experiencing anything like this?

Any other reason why this it's still under headphone mode?
I'm pretty sure the fact that it was in the washer is the problem.  Just because you 'dried' it in the sun doesn't mean it wasn't permanenlty damaged.  Try putting it in a bag of rice for 5-7 days.  If it still doesn't work, it's probably permanent.

  • Zen mx 16gb player not recognising id3 tags.

,zen mx 6gb player not recognising id3 tags.I recently bought a zen mx and so far can not get it to recognise over half of my mp3's id3 tags. All of the files are drm free. All of the unrecognised files will play but get stuck in the unknown artist unknown album catagory on the player. I have tried retagging the files in several diffrent tagging softwares and upgraded my player to the newest firmware and nothing seems to work. I had a creative vision m 30gb before I had this player and it never had this problem. I contacted customer support but they didnt seem to have any idea what an Id3 tag was and offered no relavent advice other then upgrade your firmware witch was upsetting to say the least. If anyone has any idea how to fix this that would be awesome. I feel like I just wasted almost 80 dollars.

0Re: zen mx 6gb player not recognising id3 tags. It's just aggravating because I used to talk the company up all the time. The older creative zen's where awesome. They played every file that I had with the exclusion of open source formats like ogg witch is understandable because I'm sure that there is not much demand for that.
I wouldn't be half as upset as I am if I felt like the support people where offering decent suggestions or even an explanation of what may be wrong. I mean are there certain id3 tags that are not recognised? At least try to explain why it may not work to me so that I can fix the problem without having to re-tag every cd that I have purchased since I was fourteen. I don't think I'm going to buy anything from them again until I see that the quality of there products is getting better. Maybe I should write a review on Amazon to warn people away, after all the majority of the music that its having problems with was downloaded from Amazon.com.
Btw if your haning the same problem as me kid3 is a program that will retag your files to this players satisfaction. Not that helps if you have a large volume of music but its at least something.

  • Changing ID3 Tags - not updating?

    Hi
I am updating Artist, Title information within iTunes - but for some reason the changes are not being reflected in the file ID3 tags?
some of my files are updating and others are not?
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance?

How are you examining the ID3 tags? Maybe whatever program you're using to look at them is caching the information, and not checking the tags when you look at the file a second time?

  • ITunes doesn't read ID3 tags properly on import

    hi all,
today I've added ID3 tags to all my mp3 files, so that they will look better in iTunes and my iPod. I have added information for "title", "artist", "album" and "track #" in ID3v1 and ID3v2.3.
Now, when I import these files to iTunes, the ID3 information is read only partly or not at all. This means, some tracks show all information, some only show title and artist, some do not show anything at all.
I edited all the ID3 tags with the same software, which makes it even more mysterious. The software was implemented by myself in C#. To edit the ID3 tags, I used the library UltraID3Lib. I don't think that something is wrong with my software because the ID3 tags are displayed properly in Winamp without any problems.
I have also already tried the option in iTunes to convert the ID3 tags, but this also only yields strange results: If I select "none" as ID3 version, iTunes obviously imports the information from the ID3v1 tags, but it deletes the ID3v2 tag at the same time, so that titles and albums are cut down to 30 characters. If I choose other options, nothing changes.
Does anybody have an idea how to solve this problem? Or can someone maybe explain this "convert ID3 tag" option? It doesn't really make sense to me...
    Many thanks in advance!
    gehho.

As far as I know (and it may not be very far), iTunes does use standard ID3 tags for most things. The XML file stores info on ratings, playlists, playcounts and other iTunes specific information for use by other applicaitons. iTunes itself doesn't use the XML file but rather the iTunes Library.itl file.
It's possilble to do multiple file tag editing in iTunes for things like artist, album, year, etc. I would say, go with whatever works for you. It just seemed as if what you were doing wasn't working. Perhaps the other suggestion will solve you're problem.
    Best of luck.

  • The Case of Missing ID3 Tags... and non-Apple devices, like the Sonos

Ever since the debut of iTunes 6, devices other than my Mac and my iPod have been unable to find the ID3 tags associated with .mp3 files. If I rip a CD in iTunes 6 or 7, artist/album/track data (and album artwork) display properly in iTunes and on my iPod; but when I update my Sonos music library, for example, all it is able to see is the file name. So, for example, if I rip Jimi Hendrix's "Are You Experienced," the track "Purple Haze" shows up in iTunes correctly associated with "Hendrix" and "...Experienced." On the Sonos system, however, all it sees is the track "Purple Haze.mp3." No artist. No album. Ditto for placing one of these .mp3 files on a non-Apple mp3 player: track name only shows up. Bizarrely, if I rip CDs on an older PPC G4 running iTunes 4.0, and then import those files into either iTunes 6 or 7, the ID3 tags remain married to the files. Anyone have a solution to this vexing problem?
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   2 Gigs SDRAM
Core Duo iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   2 Gigs SDRAM

In the newer versions of itunes 6+7 (don't know about 5) iTunes by default will rename the file on the HD to match the info in the "Name" column of iTunes - this is true if you have the "Keep" option selected in iTunes prefs>Advanced>General.
With iTunes 4 this was not true. I would use one of Dougs scripts to rename all my files on the HD to be Artist-Song Name. You can still do this in iTunes 6+7 if you turn off the "Keep" option or you don't edit any info in the id3 tag once you have run the script.
I know nothing of the Sonos and other stuff - I can only think that is reading only the file sname and not the id3 tag info. If it doesn't have the capability of reading and displaying the id3 tag info then I think you are out of luck. iTunes is reading the id3 tag info.

  • Unable to update album cover images and sometimes ID3-tags

    Hello everyone,
I'm having problems with updating my track information on those tracks that I imported from my hard disk (mainly mp3s). I'm unable to add an album cover to most of them and sometimes it doesn't save the changes when I'm changing title and album information.
The last things I've done were updating iTunes to version 7.3.1.3 and additionally I chose the option "convert ID3-Tags to v2.4".
Before those two changes everything worked very well, but now I don't know what to do.
    Thanks for your help already!
    Andy

    Anyone got a clue?
I figured out that after the ID3-Tag-conversion there are some files that are still alterable and some are not.
With the latter ones I even cannot re-convert the ID3-Tags back to version 1.
