ID3v2.4 tag info Year in iPod Classic

Although maintained all my files according to title - Year - Artist - song Nr., and having these info also as separated ID3-Tag info available,
first: iTunes "converts some files (without asking me) to Artist-Title
second: after sync on my new iPod classic (80GB) I do not find the year as separate category. Even the single title seem to have "lost" the year information.
How to I get the year-info maintained in the files and visible in iTunes 7.6 and how do I prevent iTunes to "build-up" new filenames and entries for the title? (I use Tag&Rename 3.4.6 from Softpointer.com to maintain the ID3-Tag Information in the mp3-files)

Regarding iTunes renaming the tracks, have you tried unchecking "Keep itunes Music Folder Organized" under the Advanced tab of Preferences?
As far as maintaining the "Year" info, I've had no issues with the info disappearing. However, if the column is not showing up in your list of songs in iTunes, go to View > View options and make sure there is a check next "Year". If you are looking for Year on the iPod, you're out of luck - you can search by artist, album, song, or genre. You can create playlists by year, decade, etc.

  • My 5 year old iPod classic will not play on my Yamaha CRX-332 cd receiver but my 3 year old iPhone 3g will.  Any suggestions to get my iPod to read the receiver or get the receiver to read the iPod?

My 5 year old iPod classic will not play on my Yamaha CRX-332 cd receiver but my 3 year old iPhone 3g will.  Any suggestions to get my iPod to read the receiver or get the receiver to read the iPod?  The receiver should be able to play the iPod with a USB connection or with the iPod dock.  Neither works with my iPod however both work with my iPhone 3g.  The iPod has the latest software.  Any thoughts?

If it is a 5-year old iPod, there is the possibility that the receiver simply won't work with the older software (there hasn't been an iPod Classic software update in years). You might try contacting Yamaha support (or doing a google search) to see if it is a known issue. One solution (probably the easiest) is to get a cable that connects a min jack (i.e., a headphone jack) to stereo cables, and just connect the iPod up that way. You eliminate the risk of corrupting the iPod, and it is a solution that should always work. Just use a wall charger to power the iPod.

  • ITunes thinks my 8 year old iPod classic is brand new??!

Hi,  Can anyone help with this please?
I've tried two different PCs and keep having the same issue, my only option is to click continue and really dont want to do this incase I lose all my music.  I've no idea if set to backup automatically but if there is a way to check this I'd be grateful.  Any ways to get round this and back up without losing anything would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    L

See Corrupt iPod classic. Start at the top for media recovery advice. If the file system hasn't been corrupted you may be able to get the media off without too much trouble. If the file system appears empty even when hidden files and system files are shown there is a possibility of recovery using unerase tools.

  • 8 year old ipod classic will not restore

Tried it on two different computer, get the same message: error with the numbers., like 1429, 1439, etc.  Refered to that problem solving sheet, did everything it asked still won't restore. Chuck it or take it to apple store for repair? Thanks for any help

I certainly wouldn't chuck it.  Plenty of people (sometimes me) buy broken iPods on eBay.  Just be honest in your listing.  You could check with Apple, but there are lots of shops that repair iPods, just Google that.
You could also check eBay for a replacement.  Most people are honest with their listings and there are plenty of good deals to be found.
I happen to be selling a 120gb Classic now and the current bid is only $49.50.

  • Problems on my iPod Classic with tags

There are 3 "problems" with the tags on my 80gb iPod classic.
My first one: When I have an album, where on some of the songs the tab has a capital and some don't (i.e. From the Mars Hotel and From The Mars Hotel) it displays them as different albums. This most definitely did NOT happen on the 5th generation iPods Second problem: I noticed that all my artists that have "The" as the first word, have been moved to the "T" section of my artists list (i.e. The Grateful Dead was once with G, now it is with T. Also, I have noticed that Albums starting with numbers have been moved to the bottom of the lists.
These are not really "problems", but they are kind of, discrepancies I guess, and I'm not sure if there is any way to adjust this. Any help is appreciated.

Yes, current iPod firmware wants identical spelling of the album name if it's not to treat the tracks as coming from separate albums.
Your issue with "The Greatful Dead" is not what I & others have noticed. If I look at the *Sort Artist* field for my tracks by *The Grateful Dead* I find it auto-populated with *Grateful Dead* in a light grey. Same goes for artists/tracks/albums/album artists beginning with an article ("the", "a" or "an") - iTunes will assume that the articles should be ignored during searching and auto-sets the sort fields appropriately. Where I have deliberately set the value of one of these fields (e.g. to stop albums with guest artists appearing as more than one album) they are displayed in black rather than grey. I wonder if, perhaps, you have managed to set the Sort Artist tag so that the article is included.
In general, as you note, ordering is A-Z, numerals, compilations (where appropriate) with any value in the sort field having preference over the value shown in the menu.

  • I can't open albums recently synced to my iPod Classic 160GB 5th Gen.

My approximately 2.5 year old ipod Classic Gen. 5  recently developed a problem consisting of the inability to open and play recent albums that had been importged into iTunes and then synced to the iPod. The software version on my iPod is 2.0.4 and it had been updated to this level after I activated the iPod shortly after purchasing it in 2010.  The version of iTunes on my computer is Version 10.5.3.3 which I installed on  01-25-2012. My Dell Computer XPS Gen 5 has Windows XP SP 3 installed on it as of 05-2009.
The "opening albums" problem has developed since the latest version of iTunes , 10.5.3.3 was installed. My iPod is about 75% full of it's stated capacity of 40, 000 tracks.I have nothing but music on my iPod.
All of my music iwithin iTunes is fully populated with the respective meta data including appropriate album art.
I have attempted several workarounds for this problem, including using the iPod reset routine (moving the HOLD button to the lock position for about 5-10 seconds, moving the Hold button back to the open position, then simultaneously holding the Menu and the Select buttons down until the Apple lkogo appears on the LED). The iPod eventually resumes normal mode and comes back to the Main Menu. This does not solve the problem of specific tracks within an album or playlist not playing.
The second workaround was having the iPod docked rto my computer and to right click the iPod graphc within iTunes which displays the panel which provides iPod identification and capacity statistics, etc. By clicking on the Restore button on this panel a procedure is launched to clear out the existing firmware on the iPod and reset it to that level on the iPod when it came from the factory; my iPod was reset to version.2.0.4. There is eventually a choice to make as to clearing off the existing music and I chose to do so.
One thing I do notice about the tracks that will not play is that they invariably show in the Get Info Summary tab as ID3tag  v2.4 and Encoded by LAME3.98.
The bulk of my music reflects ID3Tag v2.3. I read somewhere that ID3Tag type v2.4 has some negative impact on iTunes and subsequently the iPod.. The ID3tag v2.4 offers the opportunity to preload album art within the ID3 tag at a prescribed area of the ID3 tag prior to importing the music tracks into iTunes.
I also read at one of the User Commumnity sites that iTunes began the iCloud concept in the latest version or versions in January 2012. Within the Menu bar at the top of the screen you can left click on the VIEW item and get a drop down list of options. If you left click on the VIEW OPTIONS you will get a panel which provides you a selection of fields to be displayed on your listing.among them being iCLOUD DOWNLOAD and iCLOUD STATUS. I have not subscribed
to the new iCloud service so all my tracks show as WAITING with a clear cloud graphic. Aparently these iCLOUD status indicators must be stored somewhere on the ID3 tag. I hope that the music that I have been impoting to iTunes is not being corrupted by the utilization of the same area for 2 different purpsoses.

Hey you dont need our help, you can help most of us here.
But can you clarify that the problematic Albums does play in iTunes and not in iPod?
I agree with you, it is most likely the ID3Tag v2.4, which may not be implemented correctly, missing  iPod software codec,  especially the album art tag.
I can only suggest, deleting the Album Art for the album and see if it works.
    Have a nice day!

  • Ipod classic won't connect to car stereo

I have a three year old iPod classic - and it no longer will connect to my car stereo - i drive a 2006 volvo xc-70. I plug it in - and it doesn't register or recognize that the iPod is even connected. the ipod stays charged, so i presume that the cable is still connected properly to the stereo - and it works when connected to other devices. is there new firmware or updates that are not compatible?

Ok, I'm not familiar with the model of head unit you refer to. Maybe it's simply not possible to connect this way.
Is it at all possible to contact the manufacturer and get there advice.
As I said, I've never come across a car head unit that connects an iPod via a usb connection. My Kenwood unit has a usb connection and will not recognize an iPod connected in this manner (using the iPod cable). The Kenwood needs the specific iPod multi pin connector.
Also, simply connecting via usb will probably not supply a charge to the iPod from the head unit.

  • TA26488 My iPod Classic 160GB goes from song to song without playing.

I have an new generation (less than 1 year old) iPod Classic 160 GB that will not play any songs.  All the artists and songs appear to be on the hard drive, but will not play.  In fact, when you press play or shuffle it just continuously goes on to the next song without ever playing.  Any ideas...?

Reset the iPod, it wont delete any music in your iPod.
After charging till full charge, at least 2 hours (preferably 4 hours)
Toggle the Hold switch, make sure you dont see the red mark when you do the  next step
Reset the iPod -> Press Menu and Center button simultaneously for about 10 secs or till the Apple Logo comes ON
    Then release the buttons
    Select your preferred language.

  • ITunes won't read my iPod Classic, but Windows does; tried many solutions!

    Hey Apple Support Community,
I wasn't sure whether this post belonged in the iPod forum or the iTunes forum as the matter concerns both, so I decided to post in both forums. My apologies if this is 'spammy'. (iPod forum is a little old anyway).
I just dug up my 6 year old iPod Classic from the grave and would like to start using it again as my HTC's headphone jack is extremely faulty lately. My iPod Classic is completely empty - I have no music, no photos, nor videos on it.
My problem is that on my Windows 8 Laptop, Windows is able to read the iPod, however, iTunes cannot. I went over to the Support page and tried almost every recommended solution out there, and nothing seems to work.
    I have:
    Tried different USB ports
Performed a Restore/Recovery after selecting 'Format' from Windows ExplorerIt is interesting to note that, whilst iTunes doesn't read the iPod normally, it did show up in the button (Spotlight button?) next to the iTunes button when performing a Restore
Uninstalled and Reinstalled every Apple application and program from my Laptop, including iTunes, Mobile Support, Bonjour, and more, and also, deleting any remaining folders related to Apple.
I have tried alternatives to iTunes such as CopyTrans and Syncios, but all seem to fail.
    Troubleshooted my iPod various times
Restarted any Apple related Service as well as any Processes from Task Manager
Searched for Updates on Device manager -> Apple Driver and everything is up to date
    It's worth pointing out that:
When opening the iPod folder in Windows Explorer (after enabling Hidden Folders), inside the 'iPod_Control' folder, there is no 'Music' folder; not sure if this is intentional or simply because there is no music file on my iPod.
The Software Version (which displays prior selecting 'Restore') is 2.0.1. If this is outdated, the option to Update Software is greyed out and unavailable.
My iTunes is up to date.
iTunes does tend to freeze up when attempting to read the device, but is perfectly fine after a while, it just does not display the device (implying it must have failed to detect it).
It is the first time using iTunes on this laptop (laptop is 4 months old), and has never had an Apple Device connected to it before.
iPod and iTunes used to work fine 6 years ago on a different PC which is no longer at me.
If anyone could shed some light on this problem, I would greatly appreciate it. Please do not hesitate for any further information related to both iPod or Laptop.

Hey, thanks for your reply. I ran Diagnostics and the results are as follows:
    Retracts: 38
    Reallocs: 56
    Pending Sectors: 8
    PowerOn Hours: 165
    Start/Stops: 12666
    Temp: Current 29C
    Temp: Min 15C
    Temp: Max 52C
I heard that a large number of Reallocs is bad; not sure if 56 qualifies as a large number. Would this somehow interfere with iTunes not being able to read the iPod?
EDIT: Your instructions say to attempt another Diagnostics after updating however my iPod will not update past 2.0.1 (I believe that is the last update that came out for iPod Classics), unless you'd like me to recover/restore it and then try again.

  • Ipod Classic 160GB dropped dead

My 1,5 year old Ipod classic 160GB just dropped dead yesterday. Nothing happened to it, I was listening music just before going to theater, I left it on my desk, I came back, it didn't boot up. I've tried to reset it 500 times, nothing works.
The only way to get the screen to do anything more than just being blank is to connect it to my laptop or pc, with the connector cable. It doesn't function as a seperate harddisk anymore, it can't be reached or found, the only thing it does is showing an apple logo on the screen (like the one in reset) for less then a second, then turning of the screen again, and then showing it again, repeating this process forever.
I doubt it any of you guys know how to fix this, but has anyone had experience with anything like this before?
And does anyone know how apple deals with this? Yes I'm a couple of months over my gaurantee, but it can't be possible that a premium brand multimedia player like an Ipod (and an expensive one with that)just drops dead out of nowhere, after 1,5 year of very carefull use? I've never dropped it even once, it has always had a protection sleeve.

I've had a friend of mine take a look at it today. He runs on a Mac but connecting the Ipod doesn't do anymore then on my windows machine.
However, when we tried it with a firewire connection cable (instead of the normal type cable via usb 2.0) my Ipod was able to reset and even boot. I could listen to music, browse my stuff and the like, however as soon as I unplug, my Ipod is dead as can be. I've tried to make it charge for several hours with no effect.
So it seems my accu is dead, but the rest of my Ipod is ok. I'm gonna check what a replacement accu will cost me and if Apple will fund this or if I'm gonna have to pay for the failing hardware at my local Apple retail point.
*So trying firewire connection cable didn't do much for me apart from knowing that my accu is done for, but it might help others out here.*

  • IPod classic poor sound quality

    Hi,
I have a three year old iPod classic, and have noticed over the last month an issue with the sound. The sound quality is extremely poor and static sounding, like an am radio station whenever I use ANY setting on the equalizer. When the equalizer is set to off, the sound is normal again. This happens both with earphones and a dock with speakers.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks in advance!

My 5 year old iPod classic freezes every time i connect it to my computer. I've restated it 3 times today. It started after the latest iTunes update. I'm running Windows 8. Any ideas on what the problem might be?

    Hello giunta13,
So you are unable to perform a reset of the iPod? If not, you can reset the iPod by pressing and holding the Center and Menu buttons together until Apple logo appears. It wouldn't hurt to try this more than one time if necessary.
Otherwise, nothing happens when you sync the iPod with your computer? No recognition either by your Mac or iTunes?

  • How do I edit track info on my Ipod? So not itunes, but actually on the ipod?

I have seen lots of posts about going into preferences etc but that is for iTunes rather than your ipod...

You cannot edit song (track) info on an iPod Classic.

  • 6G 80GB iPod Classic stops at random

    Greetings -
In the past month, my 3-year-old iPod Classic (6G, 80GB) has stopped playing at random.
It's in my pocket, I'm listening to a tune, and the player just stops. I click the Play button, and it resumes. It may stop again in a few seconds, or it may play a song or three. And then it'll stop again.
No rhyme or reason that I can detect.
This happens regardless of whether the Hold button is engaged, and I've verified that the hold button still works. And it happens whether the player is fully charged or running low.
    Thoughts?

    Thanks -- makes complete sense.
I can't begin to describe the abuse that the jack has taken over the past three years.
Well ... $250 over 3 years ... works out to under a quarter a day.
    Not too bad.
At least, for now, it still makes a useful music source plugged into the iPod dock in my receiver.
But for commuting, I have a Cowon iAudio on the way. It might have been an iPod nano, but the redesign made it impossible to use in the pocket -- too small & no tactile feedback. Progress? -- I think not.
