IDCS Workflow: save the original file or the packaged folder?

I am using IDCS on Windows XP Professional Ver. 2002 Service Pack 3.
I am wondering if after I have packaged a file, should I delete the original file or the packaged folder? I work on a network so space is limited, so I need to save my linked graphics in an area accessible to others (who don't have InDesign). So basically I have the location of the graphics saved, the original file linked to the original graphics and the packaged folder that has copies of the original graphic files. I am fairly new to InDesign and I want to keep my files organized.
Thanks.

The very safest step would be to burn the package to disk and file it, then delete the package folder from the server.
That way you don't have lots of duplicated images that may or may not be in sync, and you have a backup copy of the file as it existed, along with links as they were, if you need them.

When using Iphoto to import photo from existing folder to iphoto, what happens if:
    1. I delete that photo in iphoto? will the original file in the folder be deleted too ?
    2.  when importing, does the hard disk store 2 versions of the photo, hence occupying additional space in the harddisk?

1 - no  --  iPhoto only manages fiel within the iPhoto library - it does not ever do anything with files outside the library
2 - No idea what you are asking - by default (and strongly recommended) iPhoto copies the original to the iPhoto library and you delete the source file outside the iPhoto library - iPhoto alwasy has at least two versions of every photo and some times three - it always have the original, a thumbnail and once a photo is modified a preview - this is not optional - if it is not what you want then iPhoto is not the correct progrtam to be using for phopto management

  • How can i stop the Action Wizard from putting the original file into the Source folder with my changed documents?

How can i stop the Action Wizard from putting the original file into the Source folder with my changed documents?

  • I went into the original files in the iphoto library and organised the photos there, now when I try to look at the photos in iphoto the tiles are there but when I try to enlarge or put into a slide show a big grey explanation mark occurs?

I tried to organise my iphoto originals to it would be easier to back them up onto my hard drive, so I renamed them and grouped them in the orinigal file. Now when I go onto iphoto to view the photos in a slide show a big exclamation mark comes up and if I click on the photo to see the original file it can't find it. Any ideas?

You won't be able to run the rebuild function and restore your library becaue you renamed and regrouped your original photos from the Finder.  I doubt if you can change the names back to their original names and put them back in the folders they were in originally so your only option is get your backup library and replace the one you damaged.
If you don't have a backup copy of the library from just before the problem that contains all of your photos you will need to start over from scratch as follows:
Start over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
    1.  Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
    2. Open the library package like this.
    3. Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
    4. Drag the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.
In the future stay out of the iPhoto Library package and only access the photos using iPhoto.

  • How to delete an individual file from the'Recents' list on an Android tablet? Not the original file in the documents library.

I have a samsung note 8 tablet. I used to be able to delete files from the recents list, but don't know how to do it in the newest version.

I don't think you can remove just one file from this list.

  • I have burned a DVD using I-DVD with pictures from Iphoto and I am wondering why the metadata that includes the Faces tags are not showing up in the original files on the burned DVD?

    Request for help

Faces is not a standard and has no place to go in metadata - in iPhoto you can export including much of the metadata by chencking all of the boxes when you export - no idea at all what iDVD does - better to ask in the iDVD forum

  • Itunes deleting music on ipod because the original file culd not be found

The music on my ipod is being deleted when i start syncing my music from iTunes to my ipod. The thing is all the music on my ipod is still on Itunes. This started happening recently, it was all fine before.Since the original file cant be found on Itunes how do you stop it from deleting off your ipod?
Also could it be a problem since my music is stored on a separate hard drive, maybe thats why the original file cant be found, even though its still connected to the computer.
If it cant be fixed then is there an easy way to find the original files so the i wont have to find the "lost" files then delete them and sync them over again.
Could it be deleting the files off my ipod because half the songs on Itunes "could not find the original file" even though the songs are on my ipod already?

I use manual sync for that very reason.
And also for that very reason, I maintain my iTunes folder on my laptop as a backup for my iPod; I only delete "songs" when I want to remove them from my iPod, and I use auto sync because I can. If I ever have to restore (and I did once, when I had to have my iPod replaced), I know I can do a complete job of it.
(Should my iPod files exceed the capacity of my laptop hard disk, I'll probably switch to using a folder on an external drive for this purpose.)

  • AppleScript to handle the original file when I add an alias to a folder

I'm looking for a Folder Action to solve this problem:
When I add a file to a specific folder (the files added to this folder are always aliases), I want the original file of the alias to get his label color setted to another color.
    How can I do this?
    Jean-François

    Hello
You may try something like the following script.
This script can be run in three ways -
[1] run as automator folder action; argv = {input, parameters} where input is alias list added to folder
[2] run in editor; argv = script (self)
[3] run as applescript folder action; argv = alias list added to folder
    on run argv
        if argv's class = list then -- [1]
            _main(argv's item 1)
        else -- [2]
choose file of type {"com.apple.alias-file"} with multiple selections allowed
            _main(result)
        end if
    end run
on adding folder items to d after receiving argv -- [3]
        _main(argv)
    end adding folder items to
    on _main(argv)
        script o
            property |LABEL| : 4
                0   none
                1   orange
                2   red
                3   yellow
                4   blue
                5   purple
                6   green
                7   gray
            property aa : argv
repeat with a in my aa
                set a to a's contents
                tell application "Finder"
if item a's class = alias file then
set item a's original item's label index to |LABEL|
                    end if
                end tell
            end repeat
        end script
        run script o
    end _main
Briefly tested under OS X 10.6.8.

  • If I photo just refers to the original photos in your home folder, how come that when i delete pictures in my home folder they are still in i photo?

I want to make more space and simply get rid of the pictures i don't want anymore.
I thought that I have to delete the pics in the original forlder becasue I photo is just a program that refers to the original folder, but apparently the pictures i deleted in the home folder, are still in my i photo library?
How is it possible and how can I synchronise these two libraries?

    Couple of possibilities:
By default, iPhoto does not reference the photos, and so unless you made a change in the iPhoto Preferences, then photos have also been copied to the Library,a nd you've been keeping two copies all along.
To delete  pic from iphoto, put it the iPhoto trash, empty it and then empty the system trash.
If you have been running a Referenced Library correctly, then you will need to delete the original file from your own folder storage as well. You chose to manage the files yourself.
There is no way to "synchronise these two Libraries". One is a database, the other is a collection of folders.

  • How can I make a droplet save a modified file next to the original file?

I am having a problem getting a Photoshop Droplet save a modified file next to the original file. That is, when I drag a file "page_6.pdf" from some directory onto my droplet, I want it to do its work and save a modified "page_6.psd" in that same directory.
This isn't working for me on Photoshop CC 2014 on Mac OS 10.10.
I have an Action which has an Open command, with the filename "page_1.pdf". Then it has a bunch of editing commands. Then it has a "Save As... Photoshop format" command, and a Close command. When I run this action within Photoshop, it brings up Open and Save As dialogues, and works fine.
In creating the droplet, I used File... Automate... Create Droplet..., and selected the following options:
    Override Action "Open" commands
    Destination menu value = Folder
Using Choose... button, select an output folder, Directory_1/ .
Check Override Action "Save As Commands" is checked
For File Naming, I use [Document Name] + "_deleteme" + [extension]
When I drag a folder, say "page_5.pdf" from some directory onto the droplet, Photoshop runs the Action on the document. However, it saves the modified document in Directory_1/, regardless of where the original file came from. And it always names the modified document "page_1_deleteme.psd", instead of using the Document Name of the original file.
If I modify the Open command in the Action to mention a different file, then the droplet always names the modified document with that name. It's as if Document Name in the File Naming dialogue always reflects what's in the Open command in the Action.  But -- I asked the droplet to Override Action "Open" commands!
When I set the Destination menu value to "Save and Close", then when I drag a file onto the droplet, the droplet opens a File Save dialogue and forces me to tell it where to store the file.  I don't understand this behaviour, and have a hard time reconciling it with the documentation at Photoshop Help | Processing a batch of files .
(Interestingly, when Destination menu value = None or Save and Close, Photoshop displays an alert about overwriting an existing droplet when I click OK to save. But when Destination menu value = Folder, there is no alert about overwriting existing droplet.)
How can I set up a droplet so that it writes the modified file in the same directory as the original file, and with the same root filename, but a different extension to reflect the different output file format?
Has anyone else made a droplet behave this way on Photoshop CC 2014 on Mac OS X 10.10?
Thanks in advance for your help.

    Thanks for your insights.
Does my Action need to include an Open command?  I sure thought so, because of how the Photoshop Help | Processing a batch of files documentation describes 'Override Action “Open” Commands'.
"...If the action contains an Open command that opens a saved file and you don't select this option, the Batch command opens and processes only the file you used to record the Open command..." I don't want to operate only the file I used to record the Open command. However, this sentence doesn't say that an Open command should be part of a droplet Action.
"...Deselect this option if the action was recorded to operate on an open file..."  Maybe I if I rethink my Action as operating on an open file, then the Droplet will take care of the Open for me.  However, I have less control over the options the droplet's Open command uses.
I'll try disabling the Open command, and create a Droplet with that.

  • Can I create action to Save As...  and change only one character of the original file name?

I'm working on a group of  files(25-28) at a time. I have to save each one as a photoshop .raw file and change the first character of the file name. the rest of the file name must remain the same. I then close the original file with no changes. I tried to create an action for this. The only problem is that the next file overwrote the file I used to create the action.  Is it possible to creat an action to save as... and keep the file name of the new file but chage the first character to the same one used in the recording?

    Good day!
I think what you are describing is not possible with Actions.
Scripting would be an option, but more convenient might be simply saving the files with unchanged names and then edit the names of  the whole bunch in Bridge in one go (Tools > Batch Rename).

  • Does 'save as' in 10.8 overwrite the original or result in loss of the original file?

Is it true that the restored using "Save As" in Mountain Lion results in loss of the original file?  I expect "Save As" to result in saving a separate file under whatever name is assigned to it while leaving the original alone. There was a post elsewhere online today to the effect that unless one or another preference is globally set for the Mac using Save As will just result in renaming the file; the original will be lost unless it can be retrieved from Time Machine or elsewhere. What is the truth here?  I understand that third-party apps (say, Photoshop) maintain normal "Save" and "Save As" behavior but that using Apple apps or others that employ the OS's saving scheme manifest this behavior. If this is true and not remediable then I'll probably leave the Mac platform after 24 years once my 2006 Mac Pro is left too far behind. This one's a deal breaker for me though the thought of using Windows 8 leaves me cold too.

    As someone online noted:
"In Apple's brave new world, there is no "Save" or "Save As". Everything you do is recorded, and you can always go back to previous versions of your work. There is no real destruction. It's just not working the way we want it to work.
Apple shifted the paradigm out from under our feet. I too find myself lost. In software support, this is known as a "problem occurring in the first half of the 'user interface'". For over 50 years, computer users have had to explicitly save their work. You didn't save it, it was lost. We even got into the habit of saving our work every so often in case the computer crashed, and hours of work was lost. The original Mac's big contribution: It reminded us to save our work when we quit the program. Now, there is no more save, and we can't wrap our minds around it."
From what I understand BOTH FILES will be saved with the changes - but what "Save As" should do is allow the copy to be saved with the changes and the original to stand alone. The whole business is a mess and nothing I want to deal with. I don't want the ORIGINAL file autosaved with my changes nor do I want to have to go fishing to figure out which version is the one I started with at that session.

  • Is there a way to save photos from lightroom without the original file?

I recently imported photos into lightroom, but I failed to save the original files on my computer and they are deleted from my card.  The pictures are still showing up in lightroom.  Is there a way to save them from lightroom without the original file?

Your images aren't - and never were - in Lightroom, they're just referenced in Lightroom's database.
Lightroom does generate jpeg previews of the originals though, and you can export those using Rob Cole's Preview Exporter plugin: robcole.com - PreviewExporter.
To be clear though, these aren't the originals.

  • After I zip a file, should I or can I delete the original files since I'm trying to save space, or do I have to keep the original one?

I'm trying to free some space up on my computer and was going to start compressing as many files as I can.  I noticed that when I compress one, I see the new zipped file and then still the original files.  So, should I delete the original files after I get the zip file?
    Thanks!

Yes, you can delete the original files.
But if you're running short of space, consider getting a larger HD for your Mac.

  • The TV show could not be used because the original file could not be found

"The TV show “Blah-blah ep.23” could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?"
I know this problem is listed (and unanswered) from quite a few users in the forums for song files, but I haven’t found any that mention TV shows. To add to the heap, and help emphasize to iTunes that this is a major bug in need of fixing, here is my version of this problem.
I have a variety of season passes to TV shows that normally download on almost a daily basis (The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, for example). About once every four or five downloads iTunes decides to silently delete a file. No warning given, no chance to stop it, just gone. ITunes downloads the file (clearly seen in the process in the Downloads part of the Store menu) and then lists the file under its correct menu in the TV Shows Library section (with the correct amount of MB listed for the file). I usually watch the episode right after I download it (with no problems), but of course I have left episodes unwatched when I shut iTunes down.
On the next startup of iTunes, I go in to watch an old episode again or click on an unwatched episode, but it isn’t there anymore and the old “would you like to locate it?” message pops up. After being through this at least a dozen times in the last year, I know there is no point in looking for the file because it’s gone. The only choice is to go into iTunes support and ask them to reset the download, which they’ve always done without question, and then I have to download the file all over again. This is a huge hassle and all the more frustrating because it happens so irregularly.
I’ve tried to find answers in these discussion forums, but have been unable to see any reasonable solution and wish to add to the voices of annoyed paying customers in the hope something will be done. If anyone is interested, the bizarre and time consuming workaround I’ve had to employ is:
    1. As soon as any of my TV shows are downloaded, I stop whatever I’m doing to go grab the file out of iTunes’ folder and move it to a location where iTunes can’t get its grubby little silent deleting hands on it.
    2. On the next shutdown-startup cycle, I can then go back and move the file back into its correct location in the iTunes TV Shows subfolders and I’ll never have a problem again with THAT particular file being deleted.
Of course, the problem with this solution is that it’s painfully annoying to have to do it every time. I get lazy, iTunes seems to get its evil deleting ways under control and downloads all seem to work again. That is, until they don’t and the issue mysteriously returns with files being picked off anew and I have to return to these forums in the hope of finally finding out why this is happening. After more than a year and two or three iTunes version updates, it’s the problem that just won’t die.
    Anyone?

Yes, only TV shows. I've never had a random silent delete of a song file. I also considered that Windows might be blocking the file to save space, but with no limitations set in the control panel that isn't the problem either. In fact, I've only had this problem with season pass downloads. It's never happened with a single download of a video or TV episode.
Tonight, when I downloaded my Daily Show episode, I really kept tabs on what the heck iTunes is up to during the process. As many know, iTunes creates a folder called Downloads during the download process. Inside that folder, a video file gets downloaded as “download.m4v” along with another Qtime info file. When the download is complete, iTunes is supposed to use the info file to identify and tag the download.m4v file and then move it over into its correct artist subfolder with the correct file name.
The problem, I discovered tonight in watching this process, is that iTunes (for mysterious reasons) does not do the relabel/move step with some of the downloads and leaves the files in situ as download.m4v in the download file. Additionally, in the iTunes software you can click on the file (correctly labeled and appearing, as I said in the first post, under the correct TV show banner) and watch it one time. However, after shutting down and restarting (and this is where the evil happens) iTunes will delete all files in the Download subfolder as part of a cleanup process. I suppose because it assumes that those files were correctly relabeled and copied into the corresponding TV show folders. So, there is the reason for the loss of downloaded video files (in my case).
There appears to be no way of knowing, from within iTunes, when the file has been correctly copied over to its corresponding folder and when it hasn’t and remains in the Bermuda Download Folder of Death. Again, I have to go into that folder each time (before shutting iTunes down) to make sure the move took place. If it didn’t, then I have to make a copy of the download file and place it outside that folder.
Finally, since this only happens occasionally, I’m wondering if it doesn’t have something to do with the way the info file is being tagged and labeled prior to being made available to download. However, if that were the case then the problem would be happening to lots of users and I would have expected a lot more complaints in the forums.
By the way, I’m not big on fidgeting with any of iTunes folders or settings. It hasn’t been the case where the downloads were fine, I made some goofy change to the folder structure and then it doesn’t work. I haven’t fiddled with the settings for months, but all of the sudden this issue starts to appear and can just as easily disappear in the following week’s downloads.
    Still seeking answers or advice.
    Cheers.
