IDCS3 Freezes - completely unusable

Hi,
I'm running a fully patched indesign cs3 on a fully patched xp sp3 machine. Both xp and indesign are fresh installs. My specs are:
quad core 6600, 4 gig ram, 8600 gts nvidia, 10,000 rpm hard drive.
Indesign freezes (usually for ~20-60 seconds) when I try to do anything at all. Opening a file, moving an image around, even just scrolling the page.
It seems to partially lock the OS as well. I can't open any new windows (windows-e for explorer, for example).
Please help, it's completely unusable.

This kind of problem is often related to video drivers, I think, or to trying to read/write over a busy network (and that includes updating previews for images stored on the network).
Video drivers are tested by turning video hardware acceleration to zero in the troubleshooting tab of the display settings dialog. If that fixes things, you need a new driver.

  • Intermittent freezing : computer unusable

    Hi,
My Macbook Pro (2.4Ghz intel) has developed recently (I've had it since september but this has only started in the last week or so) a terrible problem.
After being on for a while (more than 24 hours with many suspend/resume cycles) it becomes completely unusable with intermittent freezing.
It freezes for about 10s every 5s. It goes away when I reboot (sneaking it in during the 5s of interactivity). When I say freezes I mean the entire display stops, no cursor movement, window redrawing or anything, although things I do with the mouse/keyboard are 'saved up' and appear during the 5s window of normal behaviour.
I tried activity monitor, but can't see anything in that because it doesn't redraw during the problem.
I'd appreciate any suggestions on how to proceed with troubleshooting this, if anyones heard of a similar problem, or whether I should approach Apple (I have HE contract uplift for applecare but in my experience to date it seems pretty worthless; I had thought it would be proper support but evidently it just adds phone... but I'm making another post about Apple support).
    Thanks,

One thing that comes to mind is that it could be the hard drive. So the first thing to do is to back up your data and keep it backed up until the hard drive is eliminated as a possibility.
Open Disk Utility (in the Utilities folder in your Application folder). Click on the hard drive by brand name and then on the First Aid Tab. Check at the bottom to see that S.M.A.R.T. status is verified. Also click on the "Verify Disk" to be sure the disk doesn't need repair. Once the Disk is verified, go ahead and repair permissions using the "Repair Disk Permissions" on the lower left. Repair until there is nothing left to repair.
If all this goes well, click on the "Macintosh HD". At the bottom right, check on the "Capacity", "Available", and "Used". You want to check that your drive is not getting too full. If you have 15%-20% of the total capacity available as free space, then lack of free space is not the problem.
The other thing to do is to run the Apple Hardware Test. You do that by booting from Install Disc #1 while holding down "D". Instructions are on the disc and will be on the screen when you boot up. Run the extended version. If you get any error codes, write them down and call Apple. An error code indicates a hardware problem, which will be covered by your warranty. Same thing if S.M.A.R.T. status is not verified.
Since the freeze seems to happen when the machine warms up, I am suspicious that it may be a logic board problem. I had a very similar problem with my iBook which turned out to be the logic board. Don't know if it's the same with your MBP, but since it seems to be heat related, it could well be something similar.
Because corrupted software could also cause freezing, Apple will likely want you to reinstall the OS to see if that's the problem. That's what they had me do on the iBook. As it happened, the freezing was so bad that it was not possible to reinstall the OS--it froze during the process, which had to be aborted, giving me a message that my hard drive would be done in, which it ultimately was.
Try some of these steps, and post back if you have any questions or need any clarification on anything.
    Good luck!

  • My messenger not working properly on my iPhone 6 freezes completely and I miss all my texts just not working. anyone else having this issue?

I have already swapped this phone out once for a new I phone 6. First one I was having same issues with.
Now I got the new one and it was good for about a month and now its doing it to but worse. It freezes completely.
Won't let any of my text messages get through to me. All my messages disappear completely and randomly come back when they feel like it.
This time its frozen where I can't even read any texts or get any texts and when I click on the messenger app it just goes to the NEW MESSAGE and won't let me get out of this screen. Should I once again take this back? or are all the iPhone 6's bad like this?

It's not the iphones, it's more likely one or more of your programs causing this issue. It's not the iPhone 6's. The possibility of you getting 2 bad iphones from different batches is extremely remote or you have the worst luck on the planet. lol    If one iPhone has it, then you get a new one and the same problem comes up again, it's most likely due to an issue with a program that you keep getting back from restoring an old backup. Restore the iphone again and set up as a new iphone. Then manually import your music and your photos. Once that's done, try to use your iphone to see if everything is ok. If it works good for a few days, then try to add some of the apps. At some point, you'll end up loading the malicious app and the problem may come back. Make sure that the apps are all updated. If you still have problems, call Apple so that they can run a diagnostic report and find out which app is causing this issue. Then you can simply delete it and/or update the app. More solutions are available but that's all I will post for now.

  • New Macbook Pro 15' with Retina Display Keeps Freezing Completely

Last week I got a Late 2013 Macbook Pro 15' with Retina Display (currently running OS X Mavericks 10.9.1) . However since last Thursday it keeps freezing. It usually happens 2-4 times in a day. The entire computer will freeze completly, I'll be unable to move the cursor with the trackpad and the keyboard freezes up as well. The only way to ameliorate the problem is by shutting down the computer by pressing down on the power button and then turning it back on. When my Mac starts up again it works completely normally. Is anyone else experiencing this issue? I recently read that this was happening to some 13' Mac's (until Apple fixed it) however I haven't been able to find information regarding the same problem on a 15' Mac. Thanks in advance!

Mine isn't new model of retina mbp.
Now I'm re-installing 10.9 and I want to try it for some times.
However my mac is out of warranty and if it is a hardware problem there are no solutions for me (logic board change costs $1.000 or so).
After reinstalling 10.9, if I'll not resolve, I want to try to change thermal grease for GPU and CPU...

  • Photoshop CS5 - Completely unusable.. help!

    OK.. where do I start...
My company recently purchased a licence for Photoshop CS5 (Mac) at my request, and I am now stuck in the unenviable position of telling them it was a complete waste of money.  Hopefully someone can help me resolve some of these issues and save my butt at the same time...
    Problems:
    1. Won't quit.  Whenever I launch PS, even if I do nothing.. I can't quit.  Selecting Quit from the menu does nothing, nor does Command+Q.  I have to force quit every time which means none of my preferences are saved.
    2. Images don't update.  If I open ANY image with more than one layer, selecting/unselecting layers doesn't change the image.  For example, if I have an image with two layers in which only one is selected, then I select the second layer nothing will change on the image until I actually draw on it or make some sort of change to the image.  In other words, it's not re-rendering when I select different layers.  There are other situations in which this occurs but this is the easiest to explain/reproduce.
    3. I can't create a New image. If I select File->New... I get the New Image dialog, but clicking OK does nothing except make the dialog dissappear.  So I can't create any new images.  This seems to happen intermittently though.. sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
    4. General performance.  I have a fairly new MacBook Pro (Intel Core i5 2.4 GHz, 4GB RAM) but photoshop is appallingly slow to use.  Just general use (opening images, selecting tools etc) takes several seconds to execute.  Way more than any other app I use.
    5. If I run Photoshop in 64bit mode I am greeted with the following error at startup, "Could not complete your request because of a program error."  No idea what the error is, but I'm assuming this is a bad thing.
I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling.. no change
I have tried removing with AppZapper and re-installing.. no change
I have tried running in 32bit mode vs. 64bit mode... no change (other than the error listed above for 64bit mode).
I have noticed the following errors in the system log.. not sure if they are relevant:
/Applications/Adobe Photoshop CS5/Adobe Photoshop CS5.app/Contents/MacOS/Adobe Photoshop CS5[24480]: MDS Error: unable to create user DBs in /var/folders/B3/B3RE+qikH74rCK1Evpl+ik+++TI/-Caches-//mds
Adobe Photoshop CS5[24480]: -[NSCFString _getValue:forType:]: unrecognized selector sent to instance
At this point, Photoshop is completely unusable for me.  I'm sure it's more likely to be something with my setup (although it's pretty much a vanilla Mac setup), but either way I need some help!
    My Mac version is:
    10.6.7
    Photoshop version is:
    CS5 Extended 12.0
    Any help appreciated.
    Thanks!

Thanks for the reply.  I appreciate that millions of people are using Photoshop.  I simply hoped that one of those millions may have some useful tips to help be diagnose and (deally) resolve the problems.
I have updated Photoshop however the same problems persist.
I have also discovered that the issues with not being able to quit, and not being able to create a new image are limited to running in 32bit mode.  If I run in 64bit mode I am able to do both of these, however I still get the error at startup.
General performance is still very slow however. For example if I "long press" on the shapes tool (to display the context menu for shapes) selecting a shape from the context menu takes about 10 seconds to resolve.  During this time the CPU spikes to 100%.. all used by Photoshop and the entire machine is locked up while the CPU is maxed out.  Indeed this is observed for any context menu accessed from the Toolbox.
I haven't profiled it, but I'm assuming the slowness I see elsewhere is due to a similar effect.. namely CPU pegging.
I do not have any 3rd party plugins at all (it is a fresh photoshop install).
I have no idea what a haxie is, however after reading wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haxie) I am fairly certain I do not have any of these installed.
I also understand that it is almost impossible to "fix" my issues from this brief explanation without knowing the full setup of my machine, however I am not necessarily looking for a solution, merely some guidance as to how to diagnose the problem so I can provide more meaningful data.  Are there any logs produced by photoshop that I could inspect to help me diagnose?
    Thanks.

  • InDesign CC 2014.1 completely unusable

Since I installed the 2014.1 update last week, InDesign CC has been completely unusable for me.  Everything works fine until I either open an existing file or create a new one, then everything just stops.  I can't use it at all (I've had to reinstall CS6 to work on InDesign documents).
I'm on Windows 7 (64 bit) - everything was working perfectly before the update.
Is anyone else having this problem?  Is there any way to undo the update?

Undoing an update is not intended, unless the update has an extra entry in the control panel where you manage installations. Or you could use a backup to revert or do a complete re-installation.

  • What could cause my MacBook Pro runing under 10.6.7 to freeze completely?

    Hi,
It happen once and a while that my MacBook Pro freezes completely.
I have done the 10.6.7 update but I am not sure if the problem is related.
I know the problem could be related to many factors but I am trying to create some kind of check list before I reinstall...
This happen randomly. It could happen with one app open or several.
What would you do to solve this issue?
    Thanks for your help,
    Macly yours,
    Olivier

    Hi,
Thank you for your respond. I guess this brings me to the Apple tech service as your conclusion involve a hardware evaluation (bad memory module). I installed fan control that shows an average temperature of 47° and fan speed at 2000 RPM but doesn't tell me much as if it is good or bad...
    Macly yours,

  • Safari slows down/freezes completely when streaming video

I do not usually have this problem, and it is not with every site. Certain sites with embedded video content (YouTube, Google Video, etc.) do not have this problem. This problem only occurs when I attempt to stream from a video link.
This is how the scenario goes almost every time:
I click the link, Safari goes to a blank page with the QuickTime symbol in the middle. Soon after (5-15 seconds), the mouse beachball occurs and Safari basically freezes. If it does not freeze, it will lock up for about 10 minutes, the fans in my Mac Mini will go wild (spinning abnormally fast as if attempting to process a very, very large app or task. It is also quite loud for any type of computer or process. This problem also occurs when Safari freezes completely) and will eventually cause my computer to lock up entirely. I have had this problem for about 5 months now, and have looked at the forums to try and solve this problem numerous times (there is no Rosetta check box on my version of Safari btw, so I could not attempt that fix; I deleted my QT plugin and restarted Safari; I attempted the various fixes with QT in System Pref and MIME pref). I would appreciate if none of those answers would be listed.
Please, if anyone has any clue how this problem works and how to fix it, let me know. This has been plaguing my computer for far too long.

I did not make myself clear enough: the link does not open a new page, but rather in the same page as the original site. In other words, the video opens and plays in Safari in the same page. I do have a program, Flip4Mac, that deals with video, but I do not believe it affects QT movies because it apparently only deals with .wmv files and not .mpeg or .mpg files. My QT is also Pro, by the way.
When I stream the movies (if this is considered streaming), I let them download fully in Safari before playing them. I know when the video is beginning to load because a preview (screenshot, per say) of the beginning of the video appears and the QT menu (status bar, play/pause buttons, etc.) appears around the video. Unfortunately, Safari usually never gets to that point and locks up before the video even begins to load.
Also, when I adjusted the MIME settings, I messed around with the video, miscellaneous, and streaming tabs. I attempted to try each change with a restarted Safari with no luck. Are there any other MIME settings I should be looking at? If not, how else could I attempt to fix this problem? I have tried downloading the video, and it works from there, but it takes about 10 min. to download when it takes only about 30 seconds to stream/download in Safari. Thus, I would prefer it working in Safari, not only for convenience, but because I don't like problems going unsolved on my computer. Thanks to all so far for giving advice, at least.

  • Completely unusable Late 2006 iMac

I've been scouring the discussion boards for some time due to an issue I've been having with my Late 2006 17" iMac Core 2 Duo. It seems as if I'm not the only one having this issue. I've been having random artifacts and distortions appearing on the screen. I've taken screenshots and they appear in them aswell as when using VNC. I was hoping that snow leopard would fix the issue because I thought it was software issue, although its even worse now. Not only are these random glitches showing up on the screen, the computer is barely usable. For example, last night I turned it on to stream some music to my living room airport express, yet it completely froze and I had to hold down the power button and shut it off. It happened again after the restart.
I took it to the apple store and the "genius" had the audacity to tell me to "buy a new machine." Why? I have an older macbook pro which is not nearly as fast as my iMac but it works fine. I've converted literally dozens of friends and family to macs and iphones and its embarrassing because I have an unusable brick on my desk. What is my next plan of action? I'm certainly not willing to spend $800+ to have this fixed when it is clearly not my fault. I understand it is out of warranty but this is not a rare issue as you can see by this discussion board.

Found this on "intel imac with bad logic board" discussion from Bodomann:
*"Following up on my previous posting regarding my son's late model 2006 iMac that required a $900 logic board replacement:*
*Turns out the problem is apparently related to a bad CPU temp sensor. I installed 'iMac Fan Control' (Google it) which reported the CPU temp always at 32 degrees Fahrenheit (obviously incorrect). The same software allowed me to adjust the CPU fan manually. After multiple trials I set the CPU speed to 2800RPM after which the system would run forever - never freezing with the dreaded grey box 'reboot me' screen. I tried several times reverting the software to default speeds and the system would always crash within 10 minutes. "*
I downloaded free Fan Control 1.2 for Imac from Derman Enterprises and cranked up all three fan speeds; 2000 rpm on CPU and 2500 rpm on hard drive, which was running warm. Horizontal lines gone from screen (so far), no color artifacts and no crashes yet. I may have a real computer back! Hope Apple checks this out- I will keep spreading the word if it keeps working!
    Many thanks to Bodomann!!!

  • IPod Classic 120gb completely unusable.

I bought my Classic in late(ish) 2008, I use it every day, it's had a lot of use, but it's been looked after really well, and it hasn't skipped a beat... however recently there has been some intermittent problems with transferring files over. It would say "device cannot be synced", even though I had auto sync off.
Last night however, when I plugged it in to charge it, it said straight up that it couldn't access the files (or something to that effect)... when I unplugged it, it said there were no songs... going into the info part of the settings, there was about 75gb of "other" data... all of that used to be music... plugging it back into iTunes did nothing. So just now I've restored it to factory settings (which downloaded the update, reformatted it, etc, I didn't lose anything, it's all on my computer, but still) and while now I can connect to iTunes, songs will not transfer over. I move them on, and it says "synchronising" on the iPod's screen for about a second, then just goes back to "connected"... but in iTunes, it's like it's still copying the data, but it never ends. When I eject the iPod, iTunes freezes until I straight up unplug the cord.
I have no idea what brought this on, or what to do about it. I don't know what other details I can give you, I'm on a Macbook Pro, iTunes version 9.1... I really really don't want to have to buy a new MP3 player at the moment, but it's important that I have it with me... I don't think it's so unreasonable for an iPod to work for more than two years... Is there any kind of warranty I can claim on, even though I've had it for a long time? It's insanely disappointing to put it very very nicely...
    Can anyone please suggest something?

sorry for double post but i fixed my ipod.
1)first i went into my computer and right-click format. once done the ipod said
    files were corrupted and unusable.
2)next i restored to factory defaults and everything worked fine. had to reload music though.
    good luck

  • Macbook Pro 17" Mid 2009 Freezes completely.

I have a Macbook Pro 17" Unibody Mid 2009 2.8 Ghz 4GB Ram running OS X Lion 10.7.5 . Started noticing the issue when running Safari. Browser would lock up/ freeze. I would have to force quit. Thought it was a webpage issue and tried another browser. Same issue. Just started doing this last Thursday. I ran Apple AHT on it and no issues were found. I have run the disk repair and no issues were found. I believe I have gone through the steps to reset the PRAM, NVRAM and also the SMC. The lock up / Freeze issue will happen even at start up. However if I try to restart again I will have success. Currently the laptop is working as far as getting email. But I am concerned that if I open another app at the same time it will lock up / freeze.

Open the Console in the Utilities folder. Check for entries at the time of a crash and see if there are clues to the cause. If you are getting kernel panics, then post a panic log. Also, give this a try:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Lion/Mountain Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
After this is completed download and install OS X Lion Update 10.7.5 (Client Combo).

  • IPhone 3G Completely Unusable - HELP!

    Hi,
I recently bought my iPhone 3G in Abbotsford, BC (Canada). This week I took a trip to Europe, and during a flight... the phone completely froze up.
I have done the "soft-reset" (holding down power and home button until reboot) numerous times, but it won't go ANYWHERE. The Apple logo is all that I have seen on the device ever since. It appears to be freezing on every boot.
I can't even sync or reinstall the software (for a hard-reset). Basically, the device is completely useless. What do you recommend? is there other button combos for an actual "hard-reset" of all data? Any possible solution?
I am in Europe until August 6th, so I can't exactly take it back to the store I bought it from (for a couple weeks at least).

Don't know and magic button combos. All I can suggest is to find an Apple store nearby.
You can find stores in the UK or Italy here: http://www.apple.com/retail/storelist/
Worldwide technical support numbers are here: http://www.apple.com/support/contact/phone_contacts.html
    Good luck.

  • Index search freezes complete application

We are using the JavaHelp for the context-sensitive online help functionality in an application. A very strange error occurred:
The index search works fine for many search strings, but for many other search string the complete application freezes. One of these strings is "ab" and strings starting with "ab". This is very annoying, because many german words start with the letter combination "ab". There are other strings which do not work, f.e. strings starting with "orts" and those which do work sometimes, like "ort".
When I am writing, "the application freezes", I mean that you can only stop it via the Windows Task Manager. Since you are loosing all data which had not been safed until searching the help index, the behaviour is not tolerable for our application.
We are working with the de_DE.UTF-8 German locale.
Looking at the threads, we noticed, that one thread was running the isStringInString method of class javax.help.HelpUtilities endlessly.
I found a bug report (6195811 "jdshelp freeze at search with l10n string") which seems to be related to this problem and in which is mentioned the following:
"On de_DE.UTF-8 German locale, the following strings cause freeze.
    - <compose> + 'a' + ''' + b + <compose> + 'b' + '''"
This indicates that other people, too, must have the problem.
    Now my questions:
Do you have any ideas for a workaround?
Do you know, if it is possible to disable the index search? And if it is possible: How can it be done?
By the way, does anyone know, when JavaHelp 2.0_03 will be published? The quoted bug is mentioned to be fixed in 2.0_03.
    Thank you very much!
    beap

    Hi beap,
we are facing a similar problem. I filed bug report 6296005.
Do you use JRE 1.5? Our workaround is to use JRE 1.4.2, the bug does not occur with any JRE < 1.5.
When we detect that the user is running JRE 1.5, we just hide the Index tab. In our implementation of BasicHelpUI we do something like this:
         public void addNavigator(JHelpNavigator nav) {
            if(nav instanceof JHelpIndexNavigator) {
                final String java_version = System.getProperty("java.version");
                if (java_version.startsWith("1.5")){
                    return;
            super.addNavigator(nav);
}It's an ugly hack but better than a customer who loses important data because our application freezes.
I will provide the help set to Sun so that they can further investigate and hopefully fix this bug.
