IDE ATA100 Hard drive and current and past compatability
I have gone through 3 hard drives now, trying to install Arch Linux.
I tried twice during .7, and after install I was unable to boot.
I tried once during the "Dont Panic" version, and it booted fine, but I got a kernel panic. I unfortunatly chose to try the IDE-Legacy boot option, as I saw it helped one person with my problem. I should've tried what was suggested by the developers first.
My question is that, all of these hard drives are IDE ATA100, Western Digital. The first one was 40GB, the rest were 80GB, during .7, did Arch Linux use IDELegacy as the default boot option, and has anyone ever had any problems with this?
I honestly don't know if my hard drives are obtainable through formatting them as a slave, as I lost the first hard drive, I physically beat the second hard drive, and I lost the jump to the third hard drive.
I'm not quite sure from your post if you have a working hard drive now or not, but if you have, I'd suggest you try the install again, and if you still have problems, post here with a complete description of what is (and is not) happening. "I was unable to boot" and "I got a kernel panic" are the result of earlier errors, so you would need to include the relevant error messages exactly as they appear on screen.

Quick answer if you use iTunes default preferences settings: Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive. Start iTunes with the option (shift on Windows) key held down and guide it to the new location of the library.

In specific, I own a 2007 Macbook Notebook, and it is an Intel Core 2 Duo MB21.00A5.B07. Last year, it became necessary to replace the hard drive, and was informed that the reason for the replacement was that the hard drive had reached the end of its lifespan.
My question is how long do Macbook notebook hard drives typically last? This also is in the context of frequent use of the notebook.
Additionally, is it a good idea to replace the hard drive more then once, or will the hard ware on the notebook, after I'm assuming about six or so years, be too out of date to accommodate a second or third hard drive replacement?
Also, since the replacement was still covered under an applecare plan (it's expired now), the general cost of replacing a Macbook notebook hard drive is not known? What is the cost generally expected of a hard drive replacement? Your entire system can be copied to an external HD in bootable form. It's generally referred to as cloning, and there are a number of applications available to assist in the task.

Furthermore, once cloned, should you have to replace the internal drive, it's easy to boot from the external and clone the system back to the internal.

As I don't live in the US, it's difficult for me to reccommend retailers, but any computer store (including Apple) can supply external HDs. Be aware that not all HDs from some manufacturers will play well with Macs; Western Digital I believe needs careful selection of the correct model. There are plenty of contributors who can no doubt help on that front. Personally I use LaCie and Iomega. Note that these are purpose built externals and come with their own enclosure and all cables reqd.
One thing you will need to do with most of them is to use Disk Utility to partiton them correctly (GUID system for Intel Macs) and set the file system to Mac Extended (journaled) before cloning.

The hardware of the computer dictates what sort of internal drive you buy; earlier models used IDE interfaces, current models use SATA and these are not interchangable. However System Profiler will tell you what sort you have. It's still possible to buy compatible HDs for the early iMacs, c. 1998/99 so there's no reason to believe your model will suddenly become defunct. -
I am trying to save a doc. to a external hard drive and it wont allow me. I says its read only, any ideas on how to correct it?
Save it on the internal HD then copy it from this safe location to the external device.
iWork applications can't apply their save process on devices which aren't formatted as HFS+.
But it may also be that for some reason, an external device formatted as HFS+ is set to Read Only.
If it's this case, you will have to change de setting before moving the file on it.

I have one HDMI port on my television that is currently used for my hard drive/free view box. What kind of adaptor can I buy so I can have the hard drive and my apple tv device plugged into the same HDMI PORT? Is it a switch or a splitter? And where is it best to buy one? Thanks!

Legacy IDE Hard Drive and DVD Drive
I wondered if anybody could send me in the right direction with this...
I have got the A55M-E33 motherboard and try to connect my old hard-drive and DVD drive (both IDE) to the motherboard using IDE to SATA converters. The BIOS detects both drives, however I don't think I got the right BIOS settings to accommodate the way the drives should be addressed. Has somebody used this kind of setup and would kindly share their experience please?

I am using a T61 ThinkPad with an external hard drive and my itunes library keeps disapearing but remains on the external drive. Any idea how to fix this so my music doesn't disapear all the time? It's a real drag pulling music back into iTunes each week
In iTunes 11 uncheck the preferences setting in in the iTunes Preferences panel "Advanced > Copy Files to iTunes Media folder when adding to Library"

hey, can i clone my Macbook Pro internal hard drive and then paste it all onto a formated external hard drive, then make the Mac use the external as the primary hard drive? please help for i only have around 618mb left out of 189GB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If what doesn't work?
If cloning your internal drive to the external drive is not successful, I expect CCC will tell you so. Assuming that doesn't happen, you will have a bootable replica of the internal drive on the external drive once CCC has finished.
You can then do any of several things:
1. Replace your internal drive with a much larger one (320GB or 500GB, or even larger), and clone the external drive's contents onto the new drive so you'll have all your data in one place. Note that if you do this, you'll also need to buy an external drive that's large enough to back the new internal drive up on.
2. Boot from the external drive as a temporary measure while you clear at least 30-40GB of data off the internal drive, allowing you to keep using it and saving small amounts of data to it. The external drive will then contain the only copies of the files you've deleted from the internal drive, so you'll need a seond external drive large enough to back both the other drives up on.
If you can't comfortably clear a minimum of 30GB off the internal drive, you really need a larger internal drive right now, and you shouldn't bother fooling around with the inadequate one you have — you'll just quickly overfill it again.
3. Replace the optical drive in your MBP with a large conventional hard drive, giving you two hard drives inside the machine. You will then need one or more external drives large enough to back up both of the internal drives.
If you sense a theme here — back up, back up, back up — you are correct. It's flat-out foolhardy to own or use a computer without maintaining complete, up-to-date backups of everything at all times. -
Using iPhoto 09, 8.1.2 How do I re-route saving pictures to the hard drive? Currently am saving to files on 'my' partition, and would like to change to save to a shared file so both partitions can view and access.
Drag the Library from the Pictures folder to the Users/Shared folder. I would point out that folks doing this on 10.6 and later frequently meet permissions issues. You might do better moving it to an appropriately formatted External Disk.

I purchased elements 9 for iMac as a paid download 10/23/2015, recently I had to replace my computer's hard drive and lost elements. I had read that downloaded purchases would be available for 3 years but, when I click onto the serial number of that order it isn't active. By clicking onto the link it should take me to the site where I can re download the elements 9 but, it doesn't do anything. Unfortunately calling Adobe did not help, they will not address any elements questions over the phone, there's a recording directing all elements questions to this forum. Now I have multiple folders in my external hard drive and want to know how to condense all folders into yearly folders instead. Anyone know how to do this?

I'm quite sure there is no "automatic" way to do this. I've never heard of anyone trying it either. I suppose if you wanted try it, you could simply create a new folder in the same partition TM is on, label it for that year, then gather all the days for that year and drag/drop them into the folder. I suspect (but do not know) you'd be risking the continuity of your backups, meaning TM would simply start over again, meaning that next back up would start a new series of backups, with the first one roughly equalling the entire capacity of your internal HD, instead of adding only the new data to the previous backup. Once again, I would recommend against it, unless you're fine with TM starting a new series of backups if it doesn't work out the way you want it to. Hope you'll post back with results so we can learn from it. -
Brand new hard drive and still can't get past the gray screen
i was having problems with my mac last night going to the gray screen, sometimes i'd get the folder with the question mark. i looked up for solutions and i tried every one i could find short of reformatting the hard drive. nothing worked, getting the start-up disk causes the mac to freeze on the screen with the picture of a disk and an arrow after i press the arrow to go into disk utilities. i took it to the apple store, which i wasn't really happy with my service there- i was called up immediately but then was never able to explain what was happening to the guy he just plugged in the computer, went back to helping someone else and periodically looked at my screen. i understand that they probably take care of multiple people at once so they don't get complaints about wait times, but i don't think i was really helped at all, he just ended up saying that i needed a new hard drive and if i knew how to put one in i was better off doing it myself then sent me on my way. well i bought a new hard drive and upon installing it and putting in the mac os x disk it still freezes and no solution has worked yet.
So all you need then is to know how to format the drive and install Snow Leopard.

How do i upgrade my hard drive and get it to boot in Mountain Lion?
I have a Late 2009 Macbook 6,1 and want to install a new, larger capacity hard drive. Currently I am running Mountain Lion and don't have any install disks, so the question is, what is the process to change out the drive and get the Mac to boot after the new drive is installed. Since it is a new drive it won't have a recovery partition or any operating system files. My plan is to migrate my data using my Time Machine backup, but I worry that when I try to boot after the new drive is installed, all I will be greeted with will be a flashing question mark. I'm really having a hard time finding a step-by-step set of instructions for someone attempting what I'm trying to do. I do have an external enclosure I could put the new drive into before I put it into the Mac. Would I try using something like Migration Assistant to transfer all of the files to the new drive and then just swap out drives afterward? Would the OS migrate as well, or would I still not have a bootable drive? Or is there some kind of minimal boot disk I could burn onto a CD or flash drive and then once the machine boots go with a restore from Time Machine Backup? I'm open to any ideas anyone may have on the least painful way to go about this process. Maybe use some (hopefully free) software of some sort to clone the current drive onto the new drive while it's still in the external enclosure? Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated!
How to replace or upgrade a drive in a laptop
Step One: Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Step Two: Remove the old drive and install the new drive. Place the old drive in an external USB enclosure. You can buy one at OWC who is also a good vendor for drives.
Step Three: Boot from the external drive. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager appears. Select the icon for the external drive then click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Step Four: New Hard Drive Preparation
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your new hard drive (this is the entry with the
mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of
the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive
is failing or has failed and will need replacing. Otherwise, click on the
Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from
the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended
(Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to
GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and
wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the
drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main
window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the
Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to
return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several
hours depending upon the drive size.
Step Five: Clone the old drive to the new drive
Boot to the Recovery HD:

Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue
button.
2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
to the Destination entry field.
5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
the Source entry field.
6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
Step Six: Open the Startup Disk preferences and select the new internal volume. Click on the Restart button. You should boot from the new drive. Eject the external drive and disconnect it from the computer.
