IDE/ATAPI Controller (PCI) for Blade 1000 ?
Hi everybody,
I'm desperately seeking for a possiblity to add large storage capacity to a Blade 1000 workstation. I don't have this system yet, but I tend to buy it this week. As an alternative there would be a Blade 1500, which is full IDE/ATAPI. But the 1500 is offered with only 512MB, has only 4 memory slots and no option for a second CPU.
The Blade 1000 has only Fiber Channel, which makes it very expensive to reach ~200GB, as there is only space for two harddisks.
This leads to my question from the topic:
Does anyone know a PCI ATAPI-Controller which works in the Blade 1000 and is supported with Solaris / has drivers for it ?
Then I could run the OS from the FC disk and store all the data on the IDE disk.
Many thanks,
Ebbi
Hello Alexander,
<i>Does anyone know a PCI ATAPI-Controller which works in the Blade 1000 and is supported with Solaris / has drivers for it ?</i>
No, there are no PCI-ATAPI cards that are supported by Solaris SPARC.
<i>Then I could run the OS from the FC disk and store all the data on the IDE disk.</i>
That's the point, even if drivers are available for the PCI-ATAPI card, you would be unable to boot from the IDE-disk, due to the lack of support by the OBP.
<i>What also makes me wonder is that the specs of the 1500 say "Up to two 80 GB ATA100 IDE Disk Drives". Does that mean I cannot use larger harddisks than 80GB?</i>
Most likely these 80GB disk are the largest ones, that Sun ships for these systems. The System Handbook lists only components that Sun sells/supports.
There is a limit of 137GB for IDE-disks. This is caused by the 28-Bit LBA limitation.
A 120GB disk should work, even bigger disks, but only with a usable capacity within the above limits. Just search these forums for 160GB, a detailed procedure was given in former threads.
If the system is under support contract, adding non-Sun devices voids the warranty.
<i>Another possibility would be to connect an external firewire harddisk to the 1000.</i>
Solaris 10 has added support for USB and firewire storage devices.
Btw. Happy Birthday !
Michael

How to make "PCI-IDE SiI0680A pci1095,680 " work for Blade 1000
Somebody has reported that making the 0680 chip based PCI-to-IDE card worked on Blade1000.
http://forums.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5067148&start=15.
Now I want to expand the storage for Blade1000 by the Adaptec-ASH-1233 which is powered by SiI0680A chip.
But it does NOT work.
Any body can help me? Thanks in advance!!!
The following is the detailed infomation:
My system env:
Blade 1000 with solaris 10 U7(5/09).
I have tried the following (they all dose NOT work):
1. The card with original bios v3.2.10 (prtconf -pv report class-code: 00018000)
2. update bios to base bios (none raid, b3308.bin) v3.3.08 (class-code: 00010185)
3. erase the bios flash (class-code: 00010185)
( I think the bios is programed by x86 instruction set , it will not work in sparc.
by the way, any Solaris(sparc) device driver expert can clear that if the dirver will communication with the card bios?
If it dose , I think it is imporssible to make it work in sparc system)
4. Follwing a suggestion from sun HCL and repeat 2 ,3 ( class-code: 00018000)
add the following nvramrc script in the obp (nvedit)
0: probe-all install-console banner
1: cd /pci@8,700000/ide@1
2: 00018000 " class-code" integer-property
3: 00000680 " subsystem-id" integer-property
4: " pci1095,680" " name" string-property
5: device-end
Adjust the path on line 1 to reflect your system store with "nvstore", set the "use-nvramrc?" variable to "true" and issue a "reset".
After a boot the controller will look just as a non-RAID controller.

Is ATTO 0096-PCBX-002 Ultra320 SCSI Controller Card For Apple PowerMac G5 pci-x ??
is ATTO 0096-PCBX-002 Ultra320 SCSI Controller Card For Apple PowerMac G5 pci-x ??
Is this an OEM card? ATTO web site does not list such a model.
Otherwise, you'll be better off with a ExpressPCI UL4D or UL4S. I have run a UL4D in my G4 MDD for years with absolutely no problem. You could get one from ebay for cheap. -
Driver needed for Network controller,PCI Device,SM Bus controller
Need helpt to get the drivers for win 7 64 bit for Network controller, PCI Device,SM Bus controller, Universal Serial Bus controller, PCI Encryption/Decryption controller
Hi: For the smbus and usb 3 controllers, download and install the amd chipset drivers and reboot. http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/chipset?os=Windows%207%20-%2064 PCI device: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-141812-1&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&os=4063&product=7174407&sw_lang= PCI Encryption/Decryption controller: Download and run this driver. Then you have to manually install it. http://h20566.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/detail?swItemId=vc_133833_1 To manually install the driver, go to the device manager, click on the PCI E/D Controller needing the driver. Click on the driver tab. Click on update driver. Select the Browse my computer for driver software option and browse to the driver folder that was created when you ran the file. That folder will be located in C:\SWSetup\sp66974. Make sure the Include Subfolders box is checked and the driver should install. Then reboot. Network controller...need the hardware ID for that because I don't know what model wireless card your model has. Since there is no wireless driver installed, there should be a device labeled Network Controller in the device manager under an Other Devices category. The network controller device will have a little ! mark next to it. So, find the network controller device, click on that and then click on the Details tab. Now you see a Property drop down list and it is defaulted to Device Description. Drop down on that list and select the third item (Hardware ID's). Post the top string of characters you see in the window.

Need SM Bus Controller Driver for A75-S231
Unfortunately I am without my system and backup disks and I am in desperate need of a driver for the SM Bus Controller. Problem surfaced after re-install of XP Home.
I called Toshiba tech support to identify the motherboard chipset shipped with my unit (specs listed at end of post) so as to locate and download the driver. Unbelievably, Tech is not equipped to identify the make or model of my motherboard or identify the chipset. Third Party software tells me I have a Toshiba EDW10 Motherboard and tech searched the internet and told me I have some VIA motherboard and good luck finding your driver.
Please help, I didnt think that Toshiba of all people would be unable to identify their own systems but here I am 4 hours later bothering you good people and still hunting. Does anyone have the SM Bus controller driver for the A75-S231 or tell me what chipset was shipped with my unknown motherboard?
My system specs are as follows:
OS Name Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600

Motherboard Toshiba EDW10???
Thanks fo your help.Hi
As far as I know your unit must be an US notebook model and please try to check Toshiba US download page under http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/su/su_sc_home.jsp
Please dont be mad on tech support but I dont see any reason why they should know every technical detail of your notebook. Toshiba has designed drivers for every hardware component that you can have anytime you want and install it 1000 times if you want. Toshiba guarantee that it will work properly and I dont see any problem there.
Technical details you can get from Authorized service partners in your country.
Good luck! -
Hi fellas,
Here's some challenging issues for you:
I've heard a lot of different opinions on the deal with the connection of two drives per IDE 40 pin cable (Master/Slave) with the IDE/ATAPI interface. According to one school of thought only one device on the cable can accessed at any one time (although at lightning fast speeds so it seems both are in use).
Another school of thought says both run concurrently but only the Master device runs at premium bandwidth, or that when both are in use they degrade the performance of each other (which could be bad if CD-burning).
The most recent view I've heard, which I suspect is true, is that both devices on a cable run concurrently without bandwidth loss but that the limiting factor is the speed of the slowest device, ie if you have a UDMA 100 drive (Mode 5) and a UDMA 133 drive (Mode 6), as I do, on the same cable the higher speed drive is brought down to the slower speed drive's level, in effect (in this case) two UDMA 100 drives. The IDE controller on the motherboard however has no problem handling the extra data bandwidths. This view seems to hold water because I checked the DMA settings during bootup (notes a UDMA 100 Mode 5 and a UDMA 133 Mode 6 device) but after boot lists both as Mode 5.
Can any of you confirm the correct answer here? And in any case does it matter, doesn't the difference between say a UDMA 100 drive and 133 only come down to a percentage point or two of real performance anyway? I have heard drive controller buffers (esp. more than 2 Mb) on the drives themselves are more important for performance than bandwidth.
Whilst on the topic of hard drives does anyone know if it is (ultimately) detrimental to partition hard drives with more than one partition, esp. if you make alot of littler ones? I have heard that anything other than one big partition (eg on a x Gb drive an x Gb size partition) will "wear out the tracks". This argument ties into another question about low level formats and whether we can really do low level formats with those utilities on manufacturer's web sites or if its just another type of high level format only better or fancier. Isn't it true that due to modern drives being so incredibly high tech they can only be low level formatted once, and only then with the advanced gear they have at the factory (lasers? Sealed vacuum chambers? - all wild guesses here).
Your feedback on these issues is, as always, very much appreciated.
Thanks. Both run at the same time but with a 40pin wire IDE cable there is more interference as both signals have to share the same wire. Thats why they made 80 wire IDE cables.
You can have two devices on the same cable, one running 100dma and one running at 33dma. But that causes a lot of interference as one device is running on a faster transfer rate.
Thats why it is recommended you have cd drives and hard drives on different cables.
And hard drives, the more partitions you have the slower it becomes.
The tracks are magnetised and de-magnetised so over time they do wear away.
I agree with your last bit.
It is not possible to do a true low level format as it is what determines the physical properties of the drive which is set by the manufacturers. So a low level format is only done once.
Some programs call a full write zero a low level format but it not really.

Qill my mac accept any IDE/ATAPI interface DVD writer?
Hello,
I'm currently seeking to upgrade my Quicksilver's 1x Superdrive to a newer, faster DVD writer. I was looking at a Lightscribe 20x DVD writer to transform the painfully slow burning sessions into quicker put-on-DVD archival making.
+(RAW files take a lot of place on a HDD and slow burning sessions are now the weakest link in my workflow — a new DVD burner is a must until I change my whole computer somewhere in the following year...)+
Now since most online retailers provide only minimum information about their products, you generally know which versions of Windows will support the drive, but when it comes to Mac OS X... usually, there's nothing to confirm that the drive will work on a Mac or not!
Now the question is: will any IDE/ATAPI interface DVD burner fit in my G4 Quicksilver 2002 dual 1.0 GHz or do I need to look for a drive that specifically supports OS X? (Like an external USB / Firewire drive, for instance).
Any feedback on that would be much appreciated.
Thanks. There is a database that holds users' experiences installing third-party drives in various Macs. If you have a drive or two in mind, you can enter the specific drive and read the reports:

I bought a 73g HDD and the machine recognize it as 68,38g .. is there any upgrade I need to perform for it
Could someone please help me to solve this problem

Blade 1000 won't power on all the way
The tab for the interlock switch was broken and I fixed that with some duct tape, but now the blade 1000 will not power on all the way - does not even get to an OK prompt. When I push the power button the fans come on and the drive starts to spin, there is a low beep after that then nothing - nothing on the monitor. I tried connecting with a serial monitor and still saw nothing. I replaced the motherboard and the power supply but still nothing.
Could it be the cpu's?Go get the system documentation at Docs.Sun.Com
[http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/prod/blade1000.ws?l=en&a=view|http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/prod/blade1000.ws?l=en&a=view]
The Service manual is there for the SunBlade1000
(and SunBlade2000 which is essentially the same system except for chassis color and cpu speed).
The PSU slides into the chassis and plugs into a power distribution board (PBD).
That power distribution board then further passes power to wherever it needs to go.
There are various wires and cables that need to be connected to the PDB.
You may have to dissasemble the entire computer and rebuild it so as to know that everything is connected as it should be. -

Need to install these drivers for Windows 7 64bit OS.
This question was solved.
View Solution.Hi:
HP does not provide any support for previous operating systems on their consumer PC's which is why there are no W7 drivers for your model.
Below are the drivers you need:

Reset sun blade 1000 firmware password
I tried resetting firmware password successfully on sun blade 100 ;
By removing the nvram chip and got the ok prompt
later "set-defaults" ; ""setenv security-mode none" commands succesfully
removed the firmware password on sun blade 100
But when I tried the same on sun blade 1000 ; its accepting the new "senenv security-mode none" and confirming back. while I reboot the system its again asking for the firmware password. Tried resetting jumpers; No help.
Could some of you help me in fixing this issue.
Thanks in advance.

Don't tell fairy tales ! Without the NVRAM, your setting can't be stored. If you start without the NVRAM chip, then while the system is still powered on, re-inserted the NVRAM and finally used setenv security-mode none, this might work.
The Blade 1000 has a switch that prevents operation without a closed side-panel. If you close this switch with a piece of paper, the above procedure might work too.
In case the security-mode ist just set to command and the boot-device doesn't contain the WWN, it might be possible to use a disk with a known root password and a file /reconfigure.
The only fix without risking to damage the system, is to order a new IDPROM (SEEPROM).
