IDE Hard disk + SATA Disk

Hello,
I was wondering if anyone could take the time to give me some help, I recently assembled
a new computer using an MSI KT600 motherboard, the one showed here:
http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p_spec.asp?model=KT6V-LSR&class=mb
This board has two Serial ATA connectors that supports RAID 0 and RAID 1. I tried to attach an IDE hard disk and a SATA hard disk to it, but I started to get blue screens of death, I disconnected the SATA hard disk leaving the machine with only one IDE disk and everything is working fine now.
I cannot find any information regarding the use of one IDE disk and a SATA disk and my question is:
Is it not possible to use both at the same time?
My current configuration is this:
Maxtor hard disk 40 gigabytes Primary master
CD-Rom primary slave
DVD-Rom secondary master
DVD-RW secondary slave
My desire is to attach only one Western Digital 80 gigabytes SATA disk to the Serial ATA connector.
Appreciate your support

Hi guys,
I thought that I should let you know of my progress regarding the installation of  a
Serial ATA hard disk to my stable machine that uses an IDE hard disk to boot up into Windows XP.
To be frank with anyone who could ask, this was a crazy experiment, I am still unsure that things are as smooth as they really look, but so far this is what happened:
My computer’s power supply did not had an empty connector for the SATA hard disk, so I decided to modify one of the connectors that are used to power up floppy drives attaching a a connector from another power supply. I connected the SATA disk to this connector, plugged everything and started the machine, the bios detected the new hard disk and Windows XP appeared without any problems. Because the new Serial ATA hard disk was not formatted, I could not see it in when I opened the Icon “My Computer”, so, following instructions from the manufacturer of the disk, I used a Windows Tool to format, the most amazing thing is that the disk was formatted in seconds.
I am able to access the second disk with no problems at the moment.
Anyway, that's it.

Sometimes it's possible to use drivers for older Solaris x86 systems
to install the latest Solaris x86 release.

To do that, you have to modify HP's ITU floppy. For Solaris 10 x86,
rename the DU/sol_2X directory on HP's floppy to DU/sol_210 .

  • 915 G combo MoBo does not detect IDE Hard Disk

I assembled a system on 915 G combo MoBo. First time the BIOS recognized them as IDE 3 master/slave. After changing BIOS setting  for ATA/IDE Configuration  as Compatible and Configure SATA  as IDE BIOS detected Master and Slave HDD on IDE 1. But it did not detect my Sony CD writer and Sony DVD ROM drive on IDE 2. When I re-connected 40 GB Samsung HDD as master and DVD ROM drive as slave on IDE 1 BIOS only detected DVD drive as slave on IDE 1 but did not detect HDD saying IDE 1 Master not detected. I tried lot of combinations but same thing repeats. Please suggest me the solution. I want to use 40 GB Samsung HDD and 20 GB Seagate HDD as Master and Slave on IDE 1 and Sony CD-R/RW writer as master and Sony DVD ROM drive as slave on IDE 2. Plese help me out.

  • K8N Neo2 Platinum MB + SATA Hard Disks

    Hi,
I would like to use some additional disk in my PC and therefore buy SATA disks.
The OS is WIN XP Pro and I want to keep my IDE configuration which is:
C:\ = IDE hard disk Primary Master
E:\ = IDE hard disk Prmary Slave
    D:\ = DVD Secondary Master
F:\ = IDE hard disk secondary slave
and to this I want to add just as data storage  SATA 300GB hard disks (¿ up to 4 ? is that possible ?)
    regards Rainer

I am not familiar with K8N Neo2-F so consult your manual to confirm my answers to your questions:
1- "Is this also the case for the SATA connectors on the K8N Neo2-F ??" Highly likely since your motherboard is a stripped down version of the Neo2 Platinum.
2- "And do SATA 1&2 require different drivers than 3&4?"  For normal SATA operation these SATA drives are respectively contol by your NF3 chipset and you Realtek chipset. When you install or update your Nvidia & Realtek driver package you install all that is required to run normal SATA operation. Should you decide to use a RAID configuration with your SATA drive then another RAID specific driver would have to be installed at system level.
3- "Also, is there a significant increase in performance when going from PATA to SATA on this series of mobos?" My answer does not take into account RAPTOR HDs which are in a super class of their own. Medium to High end latest PATA & first generation SATA HDs in the 7200 RPM class are promoted by their OEM as having respective top transfer speeds of 133 and 150 MB/s. Comparing my  Seagate 120 gigs PATA HD to my other two Seagate 200 gigs SATA HDs is not very scientific since  they are not all 200 Gigs. Therefore use discretion interpreting results.
    a. PATA - Peak transfer = low eighties ; Steady Transfer = high sixties
    b. SATA -  Peak transfer = mid nineties ; Steady Transfer = low eighties
It has ben a while since I did these PATA/SATA test so I  am working from memory only. One thing that however sticks in my mind is that the delta between my PATA & SATA drives, for peak and steady performance, was very close to 12 MB/s in favor of first generation SATA. Could this be possibly related to (150-133), I do not know for sure.
SATA II generation are now coming to market. These new generation SATA II drives will most likely widen the performance gap between them and older SATA I or PATA drive.
    Take good care,

  • Hard disk driver

I have borrowed a USB 2 Hard drive and it says it is for SATA & IDE Hard Disk.
When I plug it in I can see the files on it but I cant put anything into it. I want to save about 200gb of files! Do I need a driver?

There is one "PC" format that can be used with a Mac for Read and Write. That is FAT32, sometimes appearing as "FAT". You say you have borrowed the disk so I assume there is nothing on it of concern to those who loaned it to you. I mention that as should you change the format you would loose the data. If that was a problem copy the data first to another drive a USB stick or whatever.
Check the format using Disk Utility. That raises the other assumption I make that you want to read and write with a Mac. If you do re format the first thing to think about is the partition scheme to use and the number of partitions. Since you can read the disk the partition scheme there will probably live with the Mac. You can use the Apple Partition scheme (a definite scheme) or with an Intel Mac use GUID.

  • Delta, Delta2 and Hard disk

    Hi all!
My history: I recently buy a MSI-K7N2 Delta2-LSR Motherboard, 1 sata HD an another stuff. I have a MSI-K7N2 Delta-L motherboard with 2 20Gb IDE Harddisk (Western Digital and Seagate) an Athlon XP 2200+. Well, I change motherboards an disk to make 2 computer in this way:
    Computer 1:
       MSI-K7N2 Delta2-LSR
       Athlon XP 2200+
       1 x Corsair 256Mb PC-3200 memory bank
1 Sata Harddisk (120Gb Western Digital)
1 CDRW (AOpen)  - Slave Primary IDE
       1 CD-ROM (Creative) - Slave Secundary IDE
    Computer 2:
       MSI-K7N2 Delta-L
       Semptron 2200+
       1 x Kingston 256Mb PC-2700 memory bank
1 x Western Digital 20Gb IDE hard disk (Master Primary)
1 x Seagate 20Gb IDE hard disk (Slave Primary)
       1 x Atapi CD-ROM (Master secundary)
    I have too much problems:
    - Is impossible install Windows XP from Cd in Computer 2. First, BIOS are not recognized processor, so I update bios an is fine. Then Bios say "No 80 pin data cable in IDE0". I change IDE cable, but take much time to detected hard disk. Then, Windows XP setup hang and not install (just finish the first step before I can select disk and partitions where install)
    - Computer 1 start ok, but suddently, after a reboot (after install audio drivers), BIOS no detected neither IDE device and SATA disk, so don't boot.
I guess that the BIOS update for computer 2 don't recognized old hard disk... if I buy a new 7200 RPM, ATA 100 hard disk, will be ok?
For computer 1 I don't have any idea. I install windows, some basic programs (antivirus and firewall), drivers for device... all ok. But how a audio driver can "erase" IDE and SATA device from BIOS? I try the insert key trick, but nothing passed.
    PD: Sorry my english.. :P
    Any help, please...

  • Hard disk problems with Far7 ?

Hello Everyone, I am new to this board, and this is my first post.
I purchased a FAR7 board about a month ago, and slowly came to realize I could  not get Windows XP Pro to install.
The problem appeared to be with the IDE Controller.  In the BIOS, it would not autodetect correctly and the install would always freeze at the point where windows would be started and it needed to communicate with the drive in 32bit mode.
Not to mention needing to clear the CMOS constantly, reset, reboot, etc.
Below is the letter that I submitted when I RMA'd this board, I hope this might help if anyone else is having a similar problem, or perhaps others have fought this battle and succeeded where I have not.
Just wanted to add that I appreciate that MSI has this support board, they do have a good service record as far as I am concerned, which is a very important consideration when choosing hardware.
I have bought many MSI graphics cards, motherboards and add in cards exclusively for the past several years and have never had a single issue with any of them and have been totally satisfied with all of them.
Any comments, thoughts, suggestions are appreciated !!

Kingston PC2700 ECC KVR333S4R25/512 2.5 REG (QVL Cert by MSI for this board)
    BIOS 1.12
    Main problem:
IDE Hard Disk Channel not working correctly in 32bit mode.
    Cannot install Windows XP Professional
Cannot install Windows XP Professional with SP2 slipstreamed
Setup was a Single Master disk on IDE Primary
Cable Select on Hard Disk and 80 line cable supplied with the motherboard.
I am able to see the hard disk in 16 bit DOS, only if I select
[IDE Primary Master]->[Access Mode]->[LBA] (no matter which drive I tried)
I am not able to edit Capacity, Cylinder, Head, Precomp, Landing Zone or Sector
These are automatically filled in when an Access Mode is seleted
(like LBA, CHS, Large or Auto).
This contradicts the manual on pages 3-6 and 3-7 which
says these parameters can be edited.
In the case of the Western Digital 1200JB drive, selecting
[Access Mode]->LBA did appear to select the correct
Capacity, Cylinders, Heads but the same problem occurred with all
    drives tried.
Otherwise, I am not able to access the disk drives.
Booting directly from Windows XP pro CD, installation is able to proceed
until the point where Windows is started and installation tries to do anything
related to accessing the hard disk.  System freezes.
I tried installing Windows XP pro via DOS,
Booted from DOS floppy, format 2 GB C: partition
    run winnt.exe from <CDROM>/i386
Copies files to the hard disk, starts windows and freezes
at same place as above when installing off of
installation CD of Windows XP Pro.
    Secondary problems:
Constant freezing during power up on Memory test
Several reboots needed to produce successful post
    Things I have tried:
New power supply -> Antec EPS TruePower 550 watt supply.
    Specs here -> http://www.antec.com/specs/TPII550_EPS12V_spe.html
Changed RAM to MSI QVL certified 512 MB PC2700 ECC stick

    Tried several hard drives.
    New Western Digital WD160JB
    New Seagate 120GB EIDE 7200.9
    New Seagate 120GB EIDE 7200.9
    Older Western Digital EIDE 1200JB
    Older Maxtor 20 GB EIDE
    Upgraded BIOS,
    the board came with 1.0,
I upgraded to 1.12 from MSI web site
    Various BIOS settings
    Clear CMOS, power off,
    Load Fail Safe defaults
    Load Optimized defaults
I have spent many hours and considerable expense,
trying to make this motherboard work.
I have made many attempts to install Windows XP Professional.
and tried many variations of the BIOS settings but no success.
Please help, it cannot be this hard to setup a motherboard.
I registered the motherboard at the MSI web site immediately upon purchase
    Thank you!

I used the 80 wire cable that came with the board and ran the WD's jumperless (cable select) with the drive at one end and the blue connector on the MB.  I also tried a 40 wire cable with the drive set to master.  Both of these scenarios worked fine on my other computer, which I switched back and forth several times to prove to myself that the drives were fine and the cables were ok.
I did run spinrite from dos and was always able to work with the drives as long as I selected LBA access and disabled [Integrated Peripherals]->[VIA OnChip IDE Device]->[IDE DMA Transfer Access].
The MB never autodetected any of the drives correctly.  Only when I used the the older WD 1200JB with access mode set to [LBA] and disabled IDE DMA Transfer Access did i get partial success.  Admittedly, this is a very obscure problem and not many others are hitting. Hopefully the service guys will be able to sort it out since it is easy to reproduce.
I never used that JPWR2 connector, the manual stated that it was to supply power to the graphics card but my card has a regular 4 pin molex that i could get directly from the power supply.  Wonder if the board would blow up if someone stuck the 4pin lead from their PSU in there ... maybe not such a great feature.
I did not try a single CPU or run memtest86 - things I probably should have tried.  The problem to me seemed to be the integrated IDE controller was just not working correctly, so after changing ram, power supply, drives etc and seeing the exact same problem with the hard disk, I became more convinced it was just a flakey board.  Plus the need to clear CMOS and reboot constantly to get the board to post added to theory.
Oh well, it is in RMA land now, so when it comes back I will let you know how it goes.

    hi,
i need to replace the hard disk drive inside my powerbook 12-inch (g4)... any suggestions on where i can get a good deal on a replacement hard drive? also, a good step by step guide on how to replace the hard disk drive

Indicating your location in your Public Profile makes it easier for those who respond to your queries. In addition, identifying your computr by processor speed will also be helpful.
Your computer will support a 2.5" Parallel ATA/IDE Hard Disk Drive. Here is a list of available drives. Use the filters in the sidebar to screen for capacity and manufacturer etc. then select and compare drives, or select the drive you like and Compare prices.

  • Problem with a new hard disk

I have an old Imac 333, but unfortunately the original hard disk is died, so I munt a normal ide hard disk (segate 20G), but my mac don't see it, WhY? please help me!!

First, you have to make sure the drive is set to Master, not Cable Select or other setting. The "tray-loader" iMac actually has two IDE buses and the CDROM drive is on the other IDE bus. Some drives distinguish between settings for Master with no Slave present and Master with Slave. You want Master with no Slave present. These settings are made using the sets of pins on the drive, with little jumpers. There should be a label the drive with the settings. If not, the manufacturers web site should have it settings.
If that's been done, the second problem may be that the drive is not formatted, or it is formatted for Windows. I can't tell if you are using Mac OS X or Mac OS 9. If X, start up from the Mac OS X Installation Disk and run Disk Utility from the Installer menu. If Mac OS 9, start up from the Mac OS 9 Installation CD and run Drive Setup, with should be in the Utilities folder. In both cases, use the utility to format the drive for Mac OS Extended (HFS+).
Finally, these iMacs (233 MHz to 333 MHz) have a hardware limitation that requires the start up drive or volume fit within the first 8GB of drive space. So if the drive is 20GB, you must partition it so that the first partition is about 7.7GB and the second partition is the remaining space. This limitation exists only during the startup process. Once booted, you have full access to the second partition (up to a total of 128GB for all partitions).

  • Cloning WinXP onto Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 SATA hard disk

    Greetings everybody!
I recently wanted to clone my existing (perfectly working) Windows XP Home boot hard disk onto a brand new 320 GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 SATA drive, model ST3320620AS. The existing boot C-disk is a 250 GB Western Digital SATA, which is in my Fujitsu Siemens Scaleo P (the CPU being an AMD Athlon 64 3700+). The motherboard is an ASUS A8NE-FM with the SATA interface being a NVIDIA nForce4 Serial ATA Controller.
I struggled quite a bit getting the cloned Seagate SATA disk to work as a Windows XP boot drive, but eventually got it working – using Acronis True Image Home version 9, build 3.854 (http://www.acronis.com/). Here’s how I eventually succeeded; hope it may be useful to others! ( - and I of course realize that ASUS motherboards are not made by MSI, but at the same time I have seen several MSI-users reporting similar difficulties…).
A small hint: You may download, at no cost, a full-functioning version of “Acronis True Image 10 Home”, usable for a 15 days trial period (http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/download/trueimage/). If you can manage to clone your hard disk within this period, well, it’ll be completely free! A free Windows XP clone utility, which I don’t know how well functions, is XXclone, see http://xxclone.com/.
Here’s how I did (there may be other ways, but, well, this worked for me):
    1) First mounted the Seagate ST3320620AS as the D-drive (the C-drive being the Western Digital boot drive). Kept Seagate factory-default jumper setting (“Limit data transfer rate to 1.5 Gbits per second “). Booted up, went into the BIOS (being Nvidia 42302e31 Phoenix AwardBIOS v6.00PG according to ”System Info for Windows” from http://www.gtopala.com/ ), and configured the Seagate drive as follows: Second Master SATA HDD, Extended IDE Drive: Auto, Access Mode: Large (NB: Do NOT select ”Auto” here!!), Capacity: 320 GB, Cylinder: 4095, Head: 240, Precomp: 0, Landing Zone: 65534, Sector: 255. Save configuration and exit BIOS.
    2) Booted up on the old Western Digital C-drive. Used Seagate’s DiscWizard to format and partition the ST3320620AS (http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/discwizard). The drive was formatted NTFS (4k block size, and one single partition). This went smooth (Windows XP however complained of some of the Seagate drivers not being ”WHQL certified” – just continued, anyway). Then right-clicked on ”My Computer" --> "Manage" --> ”Computer Management” --> ”Disk Management”. Right-clicked on the Seagate disk, then clicked ”Mark Partition as Active”. The Seagate drive is now seen in Windows as drive D, and is ready for use.
    3) Ran Acronis True Image Home ver. 9, build 3.854 and cloned the Western Digital disk onto the Seagate. This went smooth and took less than five minutes (data amount on the Western Digital C-drive, containing Windows XP Home, \Program Files, \Documents and Settings and not much else, being approx. 10 GB). Impressing fast cloning! Exit and shut-down.
    4) Removed the Western Digital drive from the PC, keeping only the new Seagate disk. Booted, went into BIOS, configured the boot drive as the Seagate: First or Second Master SATA HDD (according to what SATA cable is being used), Extended IDE Drive: Auto, Access Mode: Large (NB: Do NOT select ”Auto” here!!), Capacity: 320 GB, Cylinder: 4095, Head: 240, Precomp: 0, Landing Zone: 65534, Sector: 255. Save and exit BIOS.
    5) Booted into Windows XP Home on the newly cloned Seagate SATA drive. Success!! End of story!
THANKS to several of ASUS forum users help!
    Best regards,
    Johan

NOTE the there seems to be an error in some of the ASUS motherboards (or in the BIOS?), incl. the A8NE-FM, which makes it impossible to boot from an apparently successfully Windows XP cloned Seagate SATA drive unless first having set the ”Access Mode” in the BIOS to ”Large” before formatting and cloning. Some also claim that NCQ for the Seagate drive must be disabled; I have not done this and the cloned drive boots and works perfectly with NCQ enabled. (NB: If not setting ”Access Mode” to ”Large”, but if keeping the default BIOS setting of ”Auto”, then it is perfectly possible to both format, partition, set active and clone onto the drive. When attempting to boot using the cloned drive one gets this message: ”Error loading operating system” (or in Danish: ”Fejl ved indlæsning af operativsystem”). Further links discussing this issue:

that links are useless(for MSI owners), its described bug into BIOS which cannot determinate property HDD access mode. its specified problem related to this Asus board and specific BIOS version. exactly same problem happend and arrive with Gigabyte board after update BIOS to the latest one which suppose to fix "some things" and  totally unexpected in background comes this issue.....   seems some of Asus BIOSes got same issue...
MSI boards doesn't have this issue in any BIOS version.

  • G5 Tower doesn't see SATA hard disks...a TOTAL mystery...

    Hi All--
I was having some serious HD corruption & start-up problems with my 2 original HDs. 2 weeks ago, I bought a 1.5 TB Seagate internal Barracuda. Disk Util took a coupla tries to properly format & partition it, but I was finally able to create 5 HFS+ (Journaled) partitions. (At this stage, my goal was to create a new Boot Disk so I could run Disk Warrior on the corrupt drives since DU wasn't able to--bad b-tree Nodes--and also have a quick data-dump area in case the original HD got recognized, as it occasionally did).
At first, everything on the new Seagate (new Boot Drive) was fine. But...Disk Warrior locked up once while fixing permissions (and/or repairing the disk--I forget)...and my poor computer hasn't recognized any SATA drive since (new Seagate nor two original HDs. When I try to boot them I get broken folder icons, Prohibitory symbols, or the command-line errors superimposed on the gray startup screen (mach_kernel stuff?).
(One thing I noticed when I was booted from the OS X install disk was that the Log said that the 5 new ("now "unfindable") internal Seagate drive partitions were "inaccessible" becasue there was no Open Firmware path.) At one point, I also had to reconnect one of the HD's power connectors to the motherboard (near the PCI-X slots) since it came loose when I was installing/removing my Soundcard to test the sys w/o any peripherals. (A BIG bonk on the head to Apple for its ridiculously difficult PCI, RAM, and hard-disk mounting on the G5--just ask the stressed Motherboard PC board, the open/unprotected Hard Disk underbellies (and my skinned knuckles) about it.
Sorry for this next part which is WAY convoluted, but I want to be as specific as possible to see if I can get the help I need:
    • The orig Superdrive (Sony, DW-Q28a) will ONLY boot and/or read my orig OS X install DVD. After some OS upgrade or another, about a year ago, it now spits ALL other CDs/DVDs out--so no booting from Disk Warrior or anything else. (I have an external USB DVD drive (Sony), but it is, or course, not bootable with a PPC.)
    • Here's my MAJOR workaround to get some kind of working system: Bought a 1.5 TB USB Seagate Free Agent external HD. I unplugged the Superdrive (IDE) and plugged in a 4-year old IDE HD from my old G4 (running 10.3.9). I copied all data from my external LaCie Firewire HD to the FreeAgent. Unhooked the IDE HD, put the Superdrive back in & booted off the Install Disk. Erased/formatted/partitioned the LaCie FW HD and made it a boot drive. The FreeAgent is for data storage. (This is nutty as ****, though: my giant G5 tower is a giant motherboard for 2 external HDs...it's like Connecticut & New Jersey running an inaccessible New York City!)
    • I bought Data Rescue 3 (still waiting for disk in the mail)--and just like DU & Disk Warrior, it doesn't even see the 2 SATA HDs.
    . Replaced 3.6v PRAM battery.
    • I have done every single "recommended" action: command-line fsck -y, "mac-boot", "reset-nvram", "set defaults", "reset-all". I have tried boot+Option, Single User Mode, Safe Mode, cmdOption+PR, shiftOption+CommandDel...you name it, I've done it.
Most of my data was backed up, but there are still a number of things I want off the 2 original HD's.
Can someone puh-LEASE help me? I have been tearing my hair out for 4 weeks, and my wife and kids miss me!
Thanks for bearing with me, and thanks in advance,
    Nick

No you do more than everything, and more than enough. I was only saying WHY and the purpose behind 'zapping pram' thing. If the drive shows up in System Profile properly, and shows in Disk Utility as 1.5TB SEA.... you are done.
OF is my choice as quick, simple, and more thorough set of commands.
I worry about Seagate firmware. When they bought Maxtor, they seem to have lost their chef and chief cooks, that cook up firmware. Their SATA doesn't live up to their Cheetahs, that is for sure, and have had issues with iMac G5 firmware and Mac.
WD is very popular on Mac Pro, very much so, whether Black Caviars, 10K VelociRaptors, and most important: compatible.
Even on PCs, defrag tests show even current Barracudas takes much longer than any other make. And I've seen people try to zero their drives and take 10x longer (trouble with the small write I/O).

  • SATA - Hard disk led

hi guys... i got 2 HD Sata / Ata. the problem is that when i use the SATA disk the hard disk led wont come up, but when i use the Ata one it does!!.. any ideas?¿
    TIA

My IDE LED also works fine with a SATA hard disk, but I use only one SATA drive. A buddy told me that his LED does not work with SATA when he uses his drives as part of a RAID array, but it works only when he uses a single SATA drive. That may be the reason your LED isn't working if you are using dual SATA drives in a RAID configuration, or one SATA and one EIDE drive.

  • How to migrate win 8.1 from sata hard disk to ssd

    I brought an Intel SSD 730 480GB 5GBs Sata 3
I also brought  a RAID CARD SYBA| SYPEX40039 bootable. attached the ssd to that.
I like to migrate the Windows volume to the SSD.
but I have trouble to get the boot manager on to the ssd. despite not using uefi on the original install on the 1Tb drive. I can't use ghost. if I use ghost form the other partition(vista)  I can clone partition but  the 1TB is too huge to
for disk to disk cloning to  ssd 480GB
Can I start w 8.1 DVD to do a repair on the ssd to get the boot manager to there?

    Hi fs - ab,
Since third party clone software frequently cause system corruption and it’s not fixable, we only recommend two ways for system installation on new hard disk: performing a clean install or using windows system image restore and both ways need reactivate
Windows 7. And for system image restore, you can only do a system image recovery to a HDD or SSD that is the same size or larger than the one(s) included in the system image when it was created. You will not be able to do a system image recovery to a smaller
HDD/SSD. If the HDDs/SSDs are larger, then you will have "unallocated" space afterwards that is left over from the difference that you can extend into.
In that case, we VERY recommend you to perform a clean install for new hard disk.
Note: If you decide to use windows system image to restore your computer, you need to create a windows recovery disk (drive) for entry to Windows repair environment.

  • Can hard disk be replaced with larger capacity of SSD or SATA disk?

Weighing on buying a Twist, can I replace the hard disk with larger capacity SSD or SATA disk? Is there any capacity limit on SATA disk? Are SSD and SATA disks compatible for Twist (say replace SSD disk with SATA disk or vice versa?
    Many thanks.

the Twist's hdd is a 2.5 inch 7 mm drive, which you can upgrade to any other SATA disk of this size either platter or SSD.

  • Can I install and use any 2.5" SATA hard disk on my Mac Mini (Late 2012)?

I have a Mac Mini (Late 2012) which is currently housing a 500GB SATA hard disk. Unfortunately read errors have been detected and it seems to be slowing down. I want to replace this with another 500GB SATA hard disk and I was wondering whether any notebook (2.5") hard disk would work or whether I have to look for one with specific specs (such as RPM, SATA version, etc).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Any 2 1/2 inch STA HD will work as long as the height is 9.5 mm or less. All most all meet this requirement except very larger capacity ones
I would opt for a SSD since those are a lot faster than a 2 1/2 HD and now they are very reasonably priced.
You can consider installing a second disk to using:
