IDE Miniport driver for nForce?

I have noticed that AMD itself is using for testing AthlonXP 2800+ with nForce2 the IDE miniport driver in their testbed instead the native WinXP driver.
http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/ProductInformation/0,,30_118_756_3734%5E3746,00.html
What is this IDE miniport driver?
Will it increase HDD performance?
Where i can find it (for nForce not nForce2) ??
Operating System Windows XP Pro.
Manolis

IDE Miniport drivers are usually needed when the OS does not have native support for the IDE Controller.
In some cases if the OS have bad support for the IDE Controller it _might_ increase performance. It might also sometimes be needed to solve IDE compatibility issues.
EDIT, NOTE: In some cases where the native OS support does not allow an IDE channel to use UDMA mode, a IDE driver might fix that.

What’s the meaning of these drivers? Sincerely cannot grasp the explanation given in the VIA website

I believe that VIA IDE Miniport driver is only required in four cases, when you have either :
    - An IDE Zip drive, under all Microsoft operating systems, with a 686b
    southbridge chip
    - An ATA100 hard drive with Windows 2000 prior to Service pack 1
    - An ATA133 hard drive under Windows 2000 and Windows XP
    - An IDE Zip drive under Win2K

    Hi,
I have install winXP on a pavilion with ms 6367 mainboard
I find the driver of audio, eth, .. of the nforce chipset but windows xp see the controller IDE like a Controller IDE standard.
Anyone Know where Can I find the driver for the IDE Controller?
I try all on the nvidia site and on msi site with no result

Your motherboard uses an nforce chipset.  It appears that the motherboard was built for the OEM market.  Here is a link for the nvidia chipset driver packafe that had the IDE drivers included.  You need to get all bios updates Hewlett Packard site since MSI doesn't appear to list it on their site.

Is it a USB hard drive?  USB hard drives have the problem of not giving full speed if they are hooked up on the same bus as keyboards and mice.  Double check your profiler to make sure that is not a problem.  If it is Firewire, make sure there aren't other firewire devices in use at the same time.  I recommend not only keeping a Time Machine backup, but also a clone, and if you do use Time Machine, to make sure the Time Machine drive or partition is at least twice the size of the original drive.

Might be hard to find, but long ago there were a couple of Firewire<->SCSI adapters, if you have USB2 those might be available also...

Good luck and you are welcome.
Like I said, I bought one of their inexpensive enclosures and now can use the hard drive just as a source for the files that are on it...my external drives are much larger and faster so I just plug that drive in when I need something from it.

    Hi All,
I am trying to create an handle for my miniport driver Ioctl interface, but it showing the following error while opening the handle with CreateFile API.
    "you are requesting IOCTL_HAL_GET_DEVICE_INFO::SPI_GETPLATFORMTYPE,
which has been deprecated. Use IOCTL_HAL_GET_DEVICE_INFO::SPI_GETPLATFORMNAME

Can anyone suggest on how to create the handle for Miniport Ioctl interface?
    Thank you,

    Hi,
I have seen this error only in GUI based apps. Maybe you are pointing to the wrong error.
Check if CreateFile returns INVALID_HANDLE_VALUE. API return value should give you more information.

  • Wrong IDE Driver for Vista

The MS Vista SiS IDE Drivers posted for the MB "655 Max HT Ready" @ here:
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/driver/dvr/spt_dvr_detail.php?UID=424&kind=1
    ... ARE WRONG!!!
Actually the driver version is vR2.03 which was created to be compatible with Win2000/XP BUT NOT VISTA!.
Do not dare to install that driver on ur MB, once it's installed it will KILL ur OS (MS Vista). You wont even be able to access the OS in safe mode, it continues throwing a BSOD that appears some micro-seconds then it reboots automatically the system.
The people on charge of posting the drivers should be extra careful be4 posting them. It could lead a person to loose all his/her info by only trusting in the drivers posted @ manufacturer's OFFICIAL SITE!
THESE DRIVERS SHOULD BE REMOVED IMMEDIATELY!! (before it causes more serious damages in people's systems).

Quote from: tcsenter on 02-March-07, 08:18:53
Well the driver date is clearly labeled 2002, which ought to have raised a little curiosity or suspicion by any observant person.
You are totally right also. But that date is refered clearly to the OS stated in the info (OS: Win2000/XP)... so could be the case that by some reason they forgot to clarify the different version for "the 1 released" for Vista.
In addition, as u can check in a glance, the size of both files is different, which could lead to reinforce my previous theory (they forgot to clarify the driver version for the 1 released for Vista).
Quote from: tcsenter on 02-March-07, 08:18:53
There is no IDE driver available that is newer than the one already included in Vista for your SIS chipset.
Yea unfortunately, I discovered that after damaging my OS. But fortunately I had backed up the OS (by creating an image).
I mainly created this thread for saving other's people work/life/files ... since I was already saved!

  • Twist - Bad Driver for WAN Miniport?

Just picked up a new Twist s230u.  Under the Device Manager, there is a yellow exclamation point warning about a bad driver for the WAN miniport.  Is this regarding the SIM card slot in the back left behind the SD card slot?  Is there a driver update available somewhere?  I've run all the Windows updates.  I tried searching these forums but did not find a solution.  Thanks.
    Solved!

    Hi, RedV
I've seen this issue before and have helped a few users with it. The steps to removing this issue can be found here. For your convenience, the steps are also listed below:
Open the Start menu and type Device Manager into the search box.
    Open Device Manager.
Right-click on the WAN miniport device.
    Select Update Driver Software...
Select Browse my computer for driver software
Select Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer
Uncheck the box Show comptatible devices
Pick any driver from within here. (As long as Windows installs a driver, the problem can be removed. I recommend a Bluetooth driver just for simplicity.)
Click OK at the warnings that are likely to pop up. These are just notifying you that this driver is not compatible with the WAN hardware.
Eventually the driver should install. Once it does, right-click on the device again and select Uninstall.
The problem should now go away and this error will not appear in Device Manager anymore.
    Best of luck,
    Adam

  • Drivers for IDE floppy drive?

    Hello!
I have an old 400mhz Sawtooth G4, booting into both 10.4.9 and 9.2.2. I also have some disks I need to access - 3.5" floppy disks! (Phew!) We had a Iomega (Imation?) USB "Superdisk" drive, but when I tried it, I found that the enclosure didn't work - the power plug was damaged.
So, I figured "Well, it's a IDE drive on the inside, so why not put it into the G4's empty ZIP slot? I was able to buy an adapter that converts from the standard 4-pin power cables that are inside the G4 to the kind on the floppy, and was able to get the drive plugged in as a slave drive to the DVD drive. Under OS X, it comes up and reads just fine! Under OS 9, it won't work. It just sits there, reading and reading, waiting for the OS to ask for it... I need to be able to read some of these disks under OS 9, so although OS X supports the drive, it won't work.
So, is it possible to find floppy drives for IDE drives, compatible with OS 9.2.2? I know that the old Beige G3 Mac has a floppy drive, and will run OS 9, so I figure that there has to be a driver somewhere; not to mention that OS 10.4 has a built in driver. All I need is 1.4 MB support, not the "Superdisk's" fancy proprietary 120MB disk support.
    -Dan
PS: If I can get OS 9 to read the disks, how can I make a duplicate copy? Or more specifically, a "virtual" copy - a disk image - which I can use as backup? I've used OS X for this purpose before (on CDs), but 9 won't read X's images.

    Hi, Dan -
You may need to download and install the latest driver for OS 9 for that drive. You can get that here -
    Imation - USBSuperDisk Driver 3.3a
    Note - that's a direct download link, about 370MB.
If I can get OS 9 to read the disks, how can I make a duplicate copy? Or more specifically, a "virtual" copy - a disk image - which I can use as backup? I've used OS X for this purpose before (on CDs), but 9 won't read X's images.
For a simple backup, you can just copy the floppy to the hard drive - it will appear there as a folder.
If you need an actual disk image, you can use the Disk Copy utility which is included with all standard OS 9 installs to make a disk image of the floppy.

  • Question about the Intel driver for the IDE controller

    Greetings to all:
Lenovo has recently published another driver for the IDE controller and I wonder how many of you that have a T60, T60p, T61 and T61p have been able to actually install it.
    My controller device is:
    Intel(R) 82801GBM/GHM (ICH7-M Family) Serial ATA Storage Controller - 27C4,
both in XP-SP3 as in Vista SP1, 32bits versions ( see bellow details of my T60p, which has 2 hard drives)
Interestingly enough the driver on each is v:7.0.0.1020 (2005/05/23) for XP and v:6.0.6001.1800 (2006/06/21) for Vista-B. They are working well as far as I see, but now and several times before, I have tried to update them but they do not install. The message is that I have already the  best driver. I noticed that the label of the controller is not quite exactly spell out in the instruction text file or the .inf, and the one that comes close, is that of the so call ICH7-M family.
Why is this? There are at least 7 versions discussed in the history.  It it perhaps because the one for the ICH7-M family is always the same? System update does not install them either.
Forgive my curiosity but why bother publishing if they can not be installed? Or perhaps somebody has. This is not logical.
    Cheers.

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

For those who think I can not follow directions.
First, the driver for the Intel IDE device in a T60p is obviously from Intel. But there are two ways to get it fulfilled.
Lenovo publish the Intel drivers with perhaps there own twists, refinements and in the absence of clear contrary information, that they are perhaps more fine tuned to the machine. It uses the following inf files to have them install: iaahci.inf and iastor.inf. They are revised whenever Lenovo fell is necessary and eventually published.
I must assume they are in use if you have a Vista system originally installed by Lenovo and that is why those inf are the ones you find in the updates.
Mi T60p was purchased 2 years ago with XP-Pro, just before the release of Vista, with the understanding of a free upgrade to Vista-B shall be send when finally released. An Indeed they keep their word and send me a Lenovo branded full version of MS Vista-Business, some 4 months latter (not an image). Rather than upgrade XP-Pro and to avoid the time in limbo and work interruption of the Vista less desirable over XP, I did a successful clean install into a new hard drive, followed by a Lenovo system update, which changed many drivers and installed programs, etc. But as you might imagine, the Intel IDE-SATA driver installed is the one provided by MS (v:6.0.6001.1800 of 2006/06/21), (which uses a different installation file mshdc.inf) and, until proven otherwise, I must assume more generic, since it is for any and all machines, following the standard of the hard drive SATA type.
Talking to Lenovo support for nearly 1 1/2 hours last week, was at least not good for my blood pressure, while attempting to explain the issue and refuting a collections of nonsense from the support tech. Eventually a supervisor assure me that the driver was the same and that it has not change for a long time, as it is the same even for XP. Well, why bother with updates if that is the case? But I see that there are others IDE drivers species for animals such as Dell, or HP, etc. Thus you must accept that there is a strong case for a Lenovo modified Intel driver and thus the updates. Tech support could not answer such question, nor they were able to install version 8.6.0.1007 (date 2008/12/04) of the driver.
I fell the machine is working well, but have nothing to compare with (MS Experience Index 4.3). And as usually happened, sometimes you do not appreciate how sick you are, until you get cure. The question remains about the driver been generic and sufficient or specific and optimal.
    Cheers and happy holidays.

  • Ideas for Server or Net-Drive for Small Group

We're (two of us at the moment) running Final Cut Studio 3 and I'm seeing the need for a common drive for shared assets and project files. I'm not looking to get a huge TV production-level system, but something that is fast and easy for us to connect to.
Back in the day, I had the old Xserve with the fibre cards. I'm sure I can get something that serves a similar purpose, but without the $12,000 price tag.
Any suggestions is much appreciated. Thanks.

Yeah, our workflow is not pro at all really. Pro in the respect of the look and the quality of the files, but we're former designers that have a few years of FCP under our belts. Started with the old Sony BetaSP deck and all.
Up to now, I've kept a main project file for every campaign, with individual bins containing the sequencing and assets for each client. Very easy to keep track of. I always kept my files local on my GRAID2, then transfered the finished exports to the server. I also have backups of these project files and their assets. Now, I'm media-managing each client sequence so the other editor can have everthing just for that client.
Many of our spots are motion-graphic based. Lot's of Photoshoped 24-bit PNG files, Title 3D and Cinema 4D animations using the Animation+ codec for alpha. I know people say to use image sequences, but FCP doesn't seem to handle these too well. Bogs my system down too much.
I've been setting up my sequences in ProResHQ, HDTV 1080i (16:9), square pixels and things look gorgeous. Unfortunately, most cable stations these days want h.264 files which isn't a rich looking, but they look nice on TV.
    Sorry for the long post.
