IDE tape-drive not recognised

Actually the thing is recognized just fine in the BIOS. I can see it and my DVD-RW hooked up when I boot. But when I get into WinXP; 9 out of 10 times (if that) I don't see the tape drive.  And when I do; Retrospect doesn't get a response from it.
I suppose this could be a WinXP issue; but the same tape drive was recognized with WinXp SP2 on the system this new one replaced without a hitch. Could this have something to do with the Nvidia IDE drivers I installed shortly after installing WinXP?
Oh yes..almost forgot. I'm talking about K8N Neo2 board
TIA

You mean uninstall the Nvidia IDE drivers?
I can see that it's possible to uninstall just that part of the drivers. Will the system then default to the MS/Windows ones upon reboot?
TIA

  • Solaris 8 - IDE Tape Drive

    Greetings!
I have Solaris 8 x86 up and running, but cannot get it to identify my HP Colorado 8 GB IDE tape drive. A 'dmesg' reports it found, 'devfsadm' will not create any links to /dev/rmt/.
Any ideas, or is it simply not supported?

    Hello
back after a long while ... but I have the solution !
Darren, you were completely right, thanks ! I summarize if ever someone meets the same pb ...
1- normally, if the daemon "vold" is running, when inserting a CDROM in a drive, it's automatically mounted and then accessible with /cdrom/cdrom0
2- but, if "vold" is not running, it has to be launched :
    /etc/init.d/volmgt start
3- if "vold" is running but you still can't access to your CDROM (it was my case !) => that means the CDROM is maybe not readable ! Actually I had a CD-RW and the drive couldn't read it. I copied the data on a normal CD-R and it worked !
    thanks for help !
    bye

  • Hard drive not recognised....

Not being completely Apple savvy I may have dug my own rabbit warren here, however now being stuck up the creek without said paddle I could do with some sage help / advice.
Macbook refused to startup and asked me to keep on restarting, I managed to get into the disk utilities through the startup CD 1 and I tried to repair permissions and disk to no joy, quite possibly by selecting the HD itself rather than MACHD.
I decided to erase and re-install OS X however when I get to the relevant section of the install it is not giving me any options of a volume to install it to! I also have got into singleuser boot, the command prompt pages, and it states my root device is mounted read only. If I fsck the drive it again states my disk is (NO WRITE)
I assumed my hard drive need completely re-formatting but it is not recognised within the disk utility for me to erase...
Any help, advice, ideas (rather than me throwing it against the wall) will be very well received.

I still have the same opinion. Try to check with a new hard drive. As far as I can judge it, this even can be another external drive.
I had once a hard time to upgrade a MB Pro from Tiger to Leopard. The problem was a build in 4200rpm drive, which was way to slow to be recognized by the installer program or what ever. Even though the drive was looking good in the first run it was just not OK. I replaced the drive and - bingo.

  • IMac disk drive not recognising discs

    Hi everyone,
I have a late 2009 iMac (21.5in 3.06Ghz) which is out of warentee. Recently, the disk drive has began not recognising disks, mainly CD's, while it still burns to CD-R's and plays most DVD's. I have reset the SMC and completed all other Apple troubleshooting steps with no luck. I phoned a repair specialist who told me that replacing it would be very expensive (£100-£200 I can't remember exactly) for what it is. I really do not want to pay this.
Does anyone have any other ideas, or has anyone suffered similar problems and managed to fix it? All help would be appreciated... easy points here!
    Regards,
    Nathan

    Suggestions...
Make sure that you don't insert CDs with stuck-on labels.  The internal tolerances are tight.
If the drive proves to be in need of repair or replacement, it may be more cost effective to buy an external USB-connected drive.

  • External USB Hard Drive Not Recognised / Seen

    Hi,
I have a WP 250 GB External hard drive which was working fine until recently and now is not recognised by my 2007 Intel Macbook. When I plug in the hard drive, a light comes on solidly and it begins whirring. Then, it continues to whirr as if it was going to work, but the light starts flickering.
It is not visable as an external hard drive in finder. 'View Hard Disk' is switched on under Finder / Preferences. On System Profiler, when I click 'USB' fom the list on the left, the computer displays the circular "thinking about it" spinning thing, and system profiler freezes, and nothing else happens. The same thing happens with disk utility.
I tried plugging the hard drive into a windows computer, and it worked fine; all the files inside it were visable. It is formatted to my mac and I have successfully used the hard drive many times before. A logical next step would be to try it on another mac but I don't have access to one.
I have tried to to a PRAM reset, but couldn't do it, even following the instructions on the MAC website (turn off computer, turn on and hold the mac button, ctrl, p, and r simultaneously) it wouldn't do a PRAM reset.
I am not a computer expert, but I am not completely green either. Why is it that doing the simplest thing on a computer requires a minimum of a 4 year computer science degree or equivalent.... somebody please help me crack this, I am close to smashing the whole thing to pieces with a hammer (which would be satisfying but counterproductive and expensive...)
Thanks in advance for your replies

Did you allow Windows to upgrade the formatting on this drive from FAT to NTFS recently? You should be able to check the formatting on the volume from within Windows. It would also be worth trying to repair the drive under Windows if it allows you to.
Note that NTFS is not readable under OS 10.4.x without special software. NTFS is read-only but not writable under OS 10.5 and later.
If the volume isn't NTFS, and repairing it doesn't help, you may need to just backup the data and try to reformat it.

  • Sony IDE DVD Drive not being recognized

    Motherboard : P7n-SLI-FI
                        MS-7380
I recently upgraded my computer a bit with this new motherboard, ram, video cards, power supply. I used my older dvd drive that was working in my last computer. It is currently connected via IDE ribbon, but it does not show up in my computer or when I put in a CD does not auto run.
The unit does have power to it ( The eject button works, light on front blinks a little )
In BIOS I tried changing the IDE primary from AUTO to DVD/CD Drive and it still did not work.
Any suggestions ? Buy a new dvd drive that is SATA ?
    Thanks

Also check the jumpers on the IDE optical drive so as they are set in Master mode as its the only IDE device in the system, assuming that you have a SATA hard drive, or if your hard drive is also an IDE one then you have to set the jumper to run as a Slave mode.

  • External hard drive not recognised in start up options

Hi! I'm struggling to get to grips with creating a bootable external drive - any advice would be very welcome!
I've recently bought a LaCie Triple Interface 300GB external drive to use for backup storage and to use as a back up bootable drive should disaster strike. It's connected to my Mac via the FireWire 800 port.
I've backed up my documents and cloned system folders and apps using Intego Backup, but the drive is not recognised in the start up options of the system preferences, nor does it appear as a bootable drive when I option-restart.
Do I need to format and partition the drive before it will be recognised as a bootable drive? (I haven't done so) Or have I just cloned the wrong thing?! I'm not entirely sure what I need to clone to be able to boot and back up from it. Should I clone the entire HD?
Or does it sound like something else entirely?
    Can anyone help??
    1.8 GHz PowerPC G5 6.5MB RAM   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

I'm not familar with Intego Backup. Get Carbon Copy Cloner and use it to clone your entire drive, user files and all.Be sure to check the "make bootable" box before you start the process. Could be that Intego isn't capable of making a drive bootable.

  • New Spectre XT msata drive not recognised

I have bought a spare msata ssd drive to create a cloned copy of the original drive as it has already failed once.
when I use the cloning software it sees the current msata drive as an IDE drive, yet the one I want to clone is showing as USB.
When I cloned then try and boot from it, Windows doesn't see the drive. If I try and install windows as a new install it doesn't see the drive, I suspect as it sees it as a USB drive, not a Hard disk drive.
Can anyone advise how I make this drive an IDE one or bootable?
    Thank you

What is the brand name and model of the mSATA drive.
Which software are you using to clone the original mSATA drive?

  • Optical Disk Drive not recognised!

Hi, having a nightmare problem with my macbook- any help would be much appreciated!
I'm using a new (late 2010) macbook pro, and today it suddenly forgot it has a disk drive. It's no longer showing up in Disk Utility, and the eject button does nothing (there's a CD in there).
I was in the middle of burning a CD in iTunes, which crashed. I force quit, restarted, then had to troubleshoot as iTunes wouldn't open- saying I hadn't permission to open the library. I deleted the library file, then started a new one, which solved the iTunes problem and allowed me to open the program. Then I noticed the problem with the disk drive, and nothing I've tried has helped.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

Typical- I've been at this all day and as soon as I post here the problem gets solved.
For the sake of anyone who finds this and is having the same problem- the strangest solution worked:
I re-booted, and on startup rapidly pressed the eject button until the CD ejected.
Now the drive is recognised- phew.
Weird- I really didn't think button-bashing would prove to be the solution...

  • Original DVD drive not recognised

My macmini (1.83Ghz) suddenly stopped recognising its own DVD drive. No mods done to the mac mini but suddenly it does not recognise the drive. there is a movie DVD in it, which spins from time to time (for example when rebooting the mac mini or waking from sleep) but system profiler does not see a DVD drive (when i click on disc burning it shows 'No disc burning device was found. If the device is external, make sure it’s connected and turned on.' this is annoying since i cannot remove the dvd that is there nor play it.
did anyone ever come across this? what can be done to fix it? how to eject the disc manually to see if it's the disc which is the issue?

i did that. the mini took a long time to start but still not dvd drive on the system profiler. i don't know if related but on starting up, it also behaves funnily. after the grey apple screen with a spinning wheel below, i get a blue screen and it seems that nothing happens for ever. the only way to get back into the mini is to set it to sleep (pushing the power button does that) then waking it up. i then get a started up mini but it does not respond to mouse action (although the arrow moves, the click don't seem to have an effect and the keyboard is unresponsive (both are bluetooth). after a while though (around 2 min) they both operate correctly which is how i reply to you. this has been the case ever since the dvd drive disapeared so the two problems appear linked. the mini is running snow leoppard.
    please help me - thanks.

  • SL5000 tape drives not detected

    Hello Folks,
    Hope all are fine.
We have connected SL 500 drives and a robot to the switch A ( Brocade silkworm )where the backup server is connected. The back server is also connected to the Switch B to keep redundancy.
The following are the zone details
    Swich A
    Zone name: bkpzone
    Switch ports: 1( bkpserver), 2( SL500 tape drive 1), 3(Robot)
    Swich B
    Zone name: bkpzone
    Swich ports: 1( bkpserver), 2( SL500 tape drive 2)
Once connected, the backup server is rebooted by using reboot -- -rv to detect the tape drives and robot. Unfortunately the two tape drives are not present in /dev/rmt and it rmt seems to be empty. But the Robot is detected.
The OS version is SunOS prdbw 5.9 Generic_122300-19 sun4u sparc SUNW,Sun-Fire-V490.
Do I need to changing anything on the server to get the tape drives detected.

  • Why does my "HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4482B drive" not recognise DVD-R discs?

This "HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4482B" drive on my machine does not recognise DVD disks. I then remove the DVD disks and load them into another drive on the same machine where they are recognised immediately.
As the dual drive setup is very handy I'd like to have both DVDs working again.
I have been tried to update the firmware for my "HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4482B drive" but it fails to complete and this message appears:  "The update did not complete successfully, (9994)"
I would appreciate any help with this issue.

  • IdeaCentre Q180 DVD drive not recognised

I have just purchased an IdeaCentre Q180 with an attached DVD drive, but it is not recognised in My Computer, and although you can initially heaar a CD or  DVD drive spinning, they do not play or register on the PC.
How can I resolve this?  I have seen on other posts to check in the BIOS, but am unclear how to do this.
    Thank you.

Okay well to get to the BIOS on most machines (I cant remember the exact button for the Q180) you switch on the PC and the start pressing the F2 or Delete key a few times till you get the BIOS screen.
Sometimes its the F10 key but mostly Del.
Why they cant agree on one key I don't know.
Then you can take a look in the BIOS and see if the DVD shows in the drives list.

  • TAP Driver Not Installing

    Hello,
I am trying to use my Cyberghost VPN so I can use a website which has abusive admins, but my friend persists I play the game on there. I want to be safe so I tried to boot up my Cyberghost and got an update message. Whenever I click to install the update,
a window pops up and says "Error installing the TAP driver" then just doesn't update my Cyberghost.
Please do not point me to a thread that has badly worded answers and doesn't solve my issue,
    Brendan A.

    Hi,
Please try to view the Cyberghost website and find the right latest version of this update, manually download and install it, for the setup.exe, make sure to run it as admin and try to run it in a compatibility mode, to do this, right click the .exe file,
    properties\compatibility.
    Meanwhile, disable your anti-virus software.
and I'm not intended to point you a link, but I think this support forum can better help you

  • CD ROM / DVD Drive not recognised and virus on computer

    Can anybody help please?
My CD ROM / DVD Drive has failed. I have tried troubleshooting etc but to no avail. The computer does not recognise I have a cd rom / dvd drive as it says it is not recognised by the registry?
I also have a virus I cannot get rid of, this may be part of the problem (Trojan-Spy.HTML.Smitfraud.c) I have run numerous virus, spyware and trojan checks but there is no cure yet?
I tried system recovery but it will not let me recover to a previous date.
I cannot use my recovery disc because the computer does not recognise the drive. A catch 22 situation.
Can anyone offer any advice other than throw it out of the window?
Help from anyone would be much appreciated.

    HI Paul,
I think your first priority will be to remove the virus from your notebook. The following link contains details of the virus :-
    http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.desktophijack.html
Is you CD-ROM shown in the BIOS ? If so then set it to be the first selectable boot device and you should then be able to load your recovery disk and reboot from it.
