IDEA FOR A TECH DOC??

If you could propose a doc title, in other words commission Tech Docs to write a doc, what would it cover? How much detail would you want? How would such a tech doc help you? Join the discussion.

Customers can post examples and other types of content on our DocWiki at http://docwiki.cisco.com
DocWiki is fairly new, and you'll notice that not all product areas are represented yet in DocWiki. Security is one of those areas.
I have passed along to the DocWiki moderators your excellent offer to post "Using IPSEC aware VRF technology" doc, and they are working on getting coverage for Security content on DocWiki.
Thanks so much for your interest in sharing what you have learned!

Replying to myself. Kept trying different areas of the ipod this evening, clicking various buttons, including some I'd never used before. All of a sudden I could see my Nano in iTunes. I quickly clicked on Restore before iTunes changed its mind about recognizing the iPod. Moved some songs onto it and it appears to be back to normal.  Keeping my fingers crossed.

  • Different types of Tech Docs??

    Hi,
I am in the process of creating some Technical Docs. I have been given "Report" Functional Docs off of which I am to create the TD's. There is a reason I am stressing on "Report" FD's. I found a Tech Doc on the shared drive and when I opened it, it has tabs with information like the Data Flow diagram, the Datasource fields, the DSO fields, the Cube (dimensions etc) and the Multiprovider. When I showed this TD to a friend (quite experienced in BI), he said that the TD was not for a report. He said that a TD for a "report" should contain info like Chars and KF's (rows and columns), Free Chars, Selection criteria, the layout, whether Results rows will be suppressed, etc, etc. I think that makes sense but I would like to get more info from some of the experienced members here. My dilemma is, what do I do with the FD that has been presented to me. It contains the description of the report as to what its purpose is. It also contains the fields and other info that the business would like to see. What should be my approach? What questions can I prepare for the BU leads. Do I need "strong" functional knowledge in the area that the report is based on (say for eg. FI-AR)? I am new to this and a step-by-step approach/answer will be much appreciated.
FYI......I am familiar with the definitions of FD's and TD's
    Thanks. Points will be awarded

    Hi,
The functional document  of your report describes the specification about the functional requirement report in business sense what needs to be achieved. so Functional Specs are requirements of the business user which needs to be mapped to technical document/specifications, i.e technical requirement is how going to achieve . It contains all details about technical things. Technical Specs translate these requirements in a techincal fashion.
    Pls chk this links :
    Functional specs - tchnical specs

    functional and Technical Specs required
please do send some more specifc details abt your requirement, may be we will help you to acheive  some of your technical specs/document.
    Hope this helps,

  • Id for techn. maintenance docs?

    Hi forum members,
Sorry for the question not being very specific and open to discussion, but I'm pretty new to Adobe software for creating documents.
Let me first introduce our department:
Currently, we have a team of about 12 engineers who maintain ~120 MS Word documents of 20-100 pages with 'service' instructions / settings tables, 'fault finding help' etc. for machines in our factory. This includes tables, instruction lists, and lots of "picture-arrow-text". We're mostly on Windows 7 / Word 2007, though some of us are still on XP / Word 2003.
Of course, MS Word has some limitations. For example, the layout of pictures / arrows / notes relating to those pictures is always a problem. Also, it's hard for users (mechanics) to quickly find the right page / paragraph. It's hard to add 'navigational buttons' in Word, link from the text to pitures, do the layout of lists etc.
Of course, in these days, training funds are limited. I have suggested FrameMaker 11 for content editors and 'PDF viewer' for users, though an old colleague of mine who worked with both Fm and Id said Id is easier to learn, and if our engineers want to make minor changes, they could work without much training with Id while Fm would be harder.
Trend is to use more pictures and less text, and that's where my ex-colleague told Id is 'easier'. The content should be 'easy to find' for users, so we're thinking about HTML-like menu's: a kind of 'hierarchy' of files who can be 'interlinked'. So, a TOC linking to different chapters, and those chapters containing multiple paragraphs. Some paragraphs might contain multiple 'pages', for example multiple 'error explanation'.
My bosses stressed, they are longing for some 'app-like' documentation system which also works on tablets, in which mechanics can find the right paragraph in the total of 12000+ pages (growing in the future) "with a few clicks".
HTML doesn't always display the same though, because of screen sizes / word wrap / browser differences, so PDF may be our best option. The question is: Can one in InDesign make such 'hierarchies', or is it better to put everything in one big file?
Those PDF-files have to be loaded over the WiFi network though, so they cannot be too big.
Does anyone have experience with a dozen or so of engineers having to work with InDesign (or Fm for that part) without / with only limited training? Of course I'm worried they will not like it when they have to ask somebody else to make minor changes to 'their' documents.
Does anybody have experiences with 'creating file hierarchies / menu's" with PDF to enable fast searching and keep file sizes limited?
Is InDesign CS6 the right tool for the job, or might Framemaker 11 be better?
Are there more people who switched from MS Word to Id (or Fm?) for maintenance documentation, and was it worth the hassle / cost?
I've done lots of reading about Id / Fm the past few days, and I also understood that Fm is no 'primary' product of Adobe anymore (2nd class citizen?), while Id in the past was mainly for 'artists' and flyers / posters / brochures and the like, but Id changed in recent version to support 'documentation' as well. is my feeling right that Adobe is slowly merging all Fm features into Id? Is Id more 'aimed at the future'?
Thanks in advance for your replies / thoughts.

    Hi, sssuuusssaaannn:
I hope my comments are helpful in comparing ID and FM.
    sssuuusssaaannn wrote:
    Hi H,
I can't give you too much advice on your specific queries, but as someone
who has written several sets of user and installation guides in ID and now
in FM, I can tell you that ID is much easier to work with if you require
    graphics.
ID's graphic drawing tools and press output controls are far beyond FM's, but no easier than FM, IMO.
Also the panels for paragraph design, etc, are easier to access.
Not sure what you're referring to. FM's paragraph, character, and table designers are as easy to display as ID's. ID's typographic controls do exceed FM's, important in design docs, but not as necessary in tech docs. If you mean that ID's styles offer far more typographic and text formatting controls, I agree!
The only advantage I can see with FM so far is that it works like a word
processor, i.e., when you're finished with one page, you're automatically
presented with the next page to type on.  This has to be carefully set up
    in ID.
Agreed, the new Smart Text Reflow feature in recent ID releases, very useful in long documents like tech pubs, is complicated for new users to understand, and it isn't automatically present as FM's, but once set up in a document or template document, it's almost as straightforward to use. (IMO FM is to word processors as ID is to MS Publish.)
Hyperlinking and such are quite easy in ID; I haven't had a chance to work
    with that in FM.
Hyperlinking and cross-referencing in FM are about as easy as in ID; however, FM's cross-references can be navigated by Ctrl-Click in an FM document (no need to visit a panel,) capture footnote numbers (important for some users,) don't slow FM down, and are more reliable across book component files than ID's (based on quantity of postings on respective forums.)
Perhaps you're looking for 'structured' FM; I don't think that exists in ID
but I worked with an older version.
Structured editing for XML and similar outputs has been built into recent FM releases. (Previously it was a more expensive separate product.) For authors, ID's XML tagging feature isn't as straightforward to use.
I realize this mail was more about 'input' and your questions are about
'output', but I'm willing to bet ID handles that better as in my eyes, it's
    a more sophisticated tool.
Agreed, ID's outputs for press and electronic publications exceed FM's, though recent releases have new and enhanced electronic publishing features.
SOME FM ADVANTAGES FOR TECHNICAL DOCUMENTATION:
    * Unlike ID, FM's text variables can wrap across line endings.
    * Cross-reference building blocks can retrieve more of a source's context information; for example, "Paragraph text" in chapter NN, section NN, filename.
    * A paragraph with FM's run-in paragraph property (a paragraph without a line break) can be followed on the same line by a normal paragraph, so it can be retrieved by the TOC process, and by cross-references. ID's nested styles offer some similar behaviors.
    Good luck!

  • Phase: Fill Internal Header Table for VBUK via Doc. Flow Predeces

    Hi All
We currently have the phase Fill Internal Header Table for VBUK via Doc. Flow Predeces running on our TDMS system which creates the job JOB_TD05X_FILL_VBUK_2. I am assuming that it is examining table header details, my only concern it that the job has been running for 10 days and I am not sure what it is doing or if I should kill the process and start it again?
    Does anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Phil,
Have you created the index in VBFA suggested in oss note 1256679 ?
Unfortunatelly TDMS needs an index in VBFA by subsequent document.

  • Workshop IDE for WebLogic Platform - JSF Portlet Development

    Hello,
I am trying to develop JSF based portlets using BEA Workshop for WebLogic Platform IDE. The capabilities of the IDE in terms of JSF is like a simple text editor. Since the IDE is eclipse based, I wanted to to use some Third Party Plugin for JSF development.
    I evaluated the following:
    1. Workshop Studio for JSF
    2. MyEclipse PlugIn for JSF
    Problem 1:
Workshop Studio for JSF is a separate product and cannot be installed as an plugin over the Workshop IDE.
    Is this acheivable?
    Problem 2:
I created a Portal application Workspace through Workshop for Platform and opened the same using Workshop Studio for JSF. It crashed saying some runtime exceptions.
    Problem 3:
MyEclipse PlugIn for JSF doesnt integrate properly with Workshop IDE. The Faces navigational flow view is not working properly.
    Questions:
    1. What is BEA's recommendation for JSF development?
    2. Can you guide me how other developers are using the IDE for JSF development?
    Thanks and regards,
    Pazhanikanthan. P

    Hi Pazhanikanthan,
Unfortunately, in the current release the JSF features cannot be used to create JSF portlets.
Please check the following URL for additional information on JSF portlet creation
    http://e-docs.bea.com/wlp/docs92/portlets/building.html#wp1062147
If you are planning on building JSF web applications, you can always evaluate and purchase a copy of Workshop for JSF or Workshop Studio.
if you are planning on building JSF based pportlets, you will need to sue the tooling provided by Workshop for WebLogic 9.2
Applications built in Workshop for WebLogic cannot be imported into Workshop Studio. On the other hand, you can always create a webapp in Workshop Studio,a nd then import it into Workshop for WebLogic as a component.
    hope this helps.
    cheers
    Raj
If you have additional questions specific to portlet development, please post to the portal newsgroup at http://newsgroups.bea.com/bea/forum.jspa?forumID=2044

  • Design ideas for retrieving Data for Read Only

    Hi All,
Currently I am in the process of evaluating different design ideas for the search functionality of my application. I am looking for a best option for retrieving the data by executing some complex sql queries with huge query criteria and showing the single or multiple records to the user. But the data is read only. This may involve pagination if the number of records exceeds the page limit.
There are various options to implement this like JDBC and JDO or using some persistance framework to retrieve the data objects. Please suggest me about a good option for this.
    Thanks in Advance

  • Some ideas for Apple

Here's some ideas for a future version of iTunes:
Why not have multiple genre listing available? For instance a track can be both 'Soundtrack' and 'Rock', or for crossover genres, both 'soul' and 'funk'.
Also, how about a customisable type of playlist creator that works like this:
You take tracks and join them together in 'trees', by linking them using a kind of rubber band device. The playlist then follows a random path through the music collection, but only following the branches of the tree - so you could get a smooth musical journey from one genre to another: Reggae --> dancehall --> drum n bass --> hardcore --> techno --> house. Or Rock --> Psychedelic rock --> Funk ---> Soul.
I've got a million more ideas like that if you guys at Apple want to offer me a job...

Reflect, since this is a user to user forum only, no one from Apple will see your ideas. This link will tell you how to submit feedback to the iTunes team.

This is a cross post from one I put in the discussion threads. Someone said I should put it in this thread, too.
In AI, the Constrain function is less accessible than it is in FH,
because it is a preference setting. Besides being much less convenient
to get to, it also means you can't utilize it in AI's Actions. If you
COULD use it in Actions, it would be very useful in tech
    illustration--moreso than FH's Constrain--because changing AI's
constrain also rotates the grid (!). So using Actions, you could set up
one-click buttons to rotate the grid to the axis you are drawing on, and
you'd be able to use the grid to measure along the axis.
If anyone pertainent at Adobe is listening here, I sure hope this would
be considered as a modification for the next version. Make the Constrain
function immediately accessible as a simple menu selection instead of a
preference. (In FH, it's a command under the View menu. There is a
Constrain Xtra that basically just lets you access the Constrain dialog
by clicking on a "tool" icon. So, for example, when you are drawing in
isometric, you can simply put the Constrain Tool in a convenient place
(mine stays in the main toolbar). You click it, key in either 30, 150,
or 0, and hit return. Don't even have to look at the screen, so it's
fairly quick. Of course, this is nowhere NEAR as good as it would be in
AI, if only the Constrain could be built into an Action. You could
create 3 buttons, (one for each X, Y, and Z axis) and one click would
give you a measurable grid on the appropriate axis. Besides FH not
having a macro capability like AI's Actions, FH's Constrain does not
rotate the grid. So making the Constrain funtion in AI a menu selection
instead of a preference would result in a significant advantage for tech illustration.
If you REALLY want to blow FH away in this regard, do the same thing
with the grid. The user definable Grid is similar to FH's Rulers in that
you can set the increment you want. But in FH, again, it's a menu
command/dialog, not a preference setting. And you can create as many
custom rulers as you want (they are then selectable from a popup at the
lower left of the document window). If AI allowed for multiple
user-defined grids, then made them accessible as menu items rather than
as prefs, you could switch them with Actions. Then, you could, with one
click, measure along your three drawing axes EVEN IF THEY HAD DIFFERENT
SCALES (facilitating dimetric and trimetric, instead of just isometric
    drawing.)
