Idea for an alternative buddy list-

i think it would be cool if instead of names, ichat gave you an option where it would only display your buddie's icons (and the name would appear when your mouse hovered over the icon). you could have the ability to increase or decrease sizes, so your significant other's icon could be at the top of the window, a full two-square-inches; while eight or however many people you don't know as well could occupy a line beneath it.
if you could arrange and resize the icons, i think that would be really handy; as it would allow you to have the same information in a less cluttered way.
i find it frustrating both that i have to display everyone- even if they are off; and that i get multiple copies of the same person if they have two screen names.

I currently have 179 Buddies in my list.
The largest group is one of 67 for new testers that I keep for a while when they test with me.
Even if I keep it showing On-Line Buddies (See Defcom's instructions) like I do I still can't get all-oline Buddies on the screen.
However your suggestions do seem to have some merit. I could also see theat a Pop-up Buddy icon might suit some people, such as top of the Buddy list near yuo own Buddy pic and linking arrows when Chatting with possibly a small icon to show type.
At present it is not possible to have the list apart in some form of order and short of redoing people's "Real" names their is no way of changing this (Although combos of doing one and then another will produce Alphbetical Availablity). I could see that people would also want the abiliy to order the list to their own spefications or just drag them into the order they want.
I could see that some would even want the Buddy List to Display Columns.
Feedback is certainly the place to go with this.

Any ideas for an alternative to AppleWorks Database?

I've always used the AppleWorks Database to keep a record of my self-employed income. To be specific I use the 'Cheque Register' template which simply has four fields, one of which is the amount (paid to me, although I suppose the template's really for money spent - doesn't make any effective difference). Can anyone suggest a similarly simple solution for me to use when I upgrade to Lion? I don't need an all-singing all-dancing accounts package. I am only interested in recording and totalling my income, noting who it's from, and adding any additional info I want to remember. No expenses, no budgeting, just income. I could (just about, I think) cope with creating a database, but have no idea how to make it user friendly. I've got Office for Mac, but that doesn't have a database, does it?

Unless you're making use of the very flexible layout options provided by AppleWorks's database, I'd move it into a spreadsheet application, such a Numbers.
I don't see a "Checkbook Register" template or assistant in AppleWorks 6. AppleWorks 5 did include a "Checkbook and Ledger" database template, which included the check register layout shown below.
As far as I know, the only application that can open AppleWorks database files is AppleWorks. If, as Csound1 suggests, Bento is able to open AW database files, that ability will quite likely apply only to files saved as AppleWorks 6 files.
To transfer the data to a new application, it will first be necessary to Save or Export the file as Text (or ASCII Text). This will produce a file containing the data (entered or calculated), but not the formulas that produced the data. You may also be able to transfer the data using Copy/Paste, with the same results. Use List view (in the Layout menu) to do this.
Once it's in the new spreadsheet, you'll need to reconstruct the formulas.

There are two main ways.
1) With the AIM applictaion there is a facility for saviing the Buddy list to your comuter and then chaing the Account and importing th e list.
2) The Second way is make sure your Buddies are identified in the Address Book as Buddies in some way and then dragging them back to the new ichat Buddy List.
There is one problem with the scond method and that is some Buddies with just accounts names in the Buddy list do not show up in the Address Book until more info is added to their Address Card in iChat. These Buddies will need you to do a Get Info on them (Click once on the Buddy and then use the Apple Key and i Together and select Address Card from the drop down in the window that appears). You will need to Add eitehr Real names or some other unique identifier to show up in the address Book.
The problem with the first method may be the need to download AIM
The actual iten you need is in the File menu as Export.
So the real answer is no.

Can't Recall Buddy List

So everyone knows that in most Mac apps, when you hit the red dot in the red, yellow, green combination that appears at the top left of windows, it simply closes the window and generally does not QUIT the application. Instead of minimizing my iChat window, I usually just click the red dot to close the buddy list and then click on the iChat icon in the dock to cause the list to reappear when I need it.
Aside from the fact that iChat unexpectedly quits with Safari several times a week, this trick of clicking on the dock icon to make the buddy list reappear has completely died. Once I close out the buddy list I can't bring it back. If I go up to the Menu bar the "Show Buddy List" menu option doesn't even show up, and 90% of the options found in the drop down menus of iChat are greyed out, yet I'm still connected fine. For example the "Buddy List" option normally found in the "Window" drop down menu is greyed out.
The only way to get my buddy list to reappear is to log out and log back in again. Suggestions?

Ideas for a "buddy list"

hi i am trying to design and create a buddy list for my instant messenger. i have created a Jtree with online and offline has the child nodes.
i then going to create a vector list stored in a txt file with users names, and i will load that list in a jtree..
the problem im having is how can i load data from the vector list into the jtree? And most importantly how can the Jtree autmaticly updates itself when a user is offline/online?
BTW i have a sMYSQL erver that knows when a user is offline/online..
any suggetsions?

I don't agree that it's "more" relevant at all. The view listens to the model in this case, which a JTree does (it listens to the TreeModel).

I don't see that there's a need to add any tree listeners in your case. Update the model, and the view will update itself automagically.

How do I create an auto reply for one person in my buddy list?

I want to be able to have an automatic reply to one person in my buddy list whenever they IM me so that i dont have to reply myself. I dont want to block them but i sometimes want to be able to just avoid them and so does anyone know any applescript that i can run whenever they send me a message??

In the Buddy List highlight a Buddy.
Use the CMD and I keys together (Get Info)
This brings up their Info Card.
Select Actions (Same as Alerts in the Preferences In Fact some versions do Read "Alerts" )
Change the top item to Invite (Text)
Select the AppleScript option.
Set the Script to be Auto-Decline.
This will produce no response on the Buddies end.
For that go to the General Section of the Preferences and set the option to "Auto-Reply with my Away Message"
This will then send the Away message to the Buddy set in the first bit but to no--one else.
If you wish to be able to Reply when you have an Available Message up, that is a little more difficult.

Ichat auto accept for file transfer? way to combine buddy lists?

1) on the new leopard ichat, is there an auto-accept mode for file transfers so that anyone on my buddy list can automatically send me files?
2) i have a google chat and aim accounts running. they run on separate buddy lists. is there a way to combine them to only have one buddy list window?

You can actually. Go to iChat > Preferences > Alerts, select "Incoming File Transfers" from the pull-down menu, check "Run AppleScript", select "Auto Accept.applescript". Your file transfers will be accepted by default

I am looking for new buddies to add to my buddy list.

I have used iChat for several years, but my "Buddy" list has got smaller over time. I would like to locate new people. I am 70 years old, I am a Christian, a retired commercial artist.

How do I add a googlemail user onto my buddy list on my ichat?

I bought my macbook a few weeks ago and, while I adore it to bits so far, I seem to have a bit of a problem with ichat (version 4.0.6). I tried to add my friend who uses a googlemail account (with jabber) onto my buddy list in ichat but, according to ichat, it seems that it only accepts mac.com, aim and mobile me account holders. So that was no good so I tried it on adium and I got it ok but for some reason, I cant see him online nor can he see me online. I logged out of adium and logged back into ichat and there it was his username there with googlemail.com but still cant reach him even though I said a couple of lines to check. Im stuck! Any idea how to add googlemail users onto buddy list on ichat?

One other user & I can no longer see each other in the buddy list

My friend & I, who have used iChat for years, and also recently, and neither of us has changed anything, can no longer see each other in either one of our buddy lists.
We've checked:
- That neither of us is blocking the other
- That other people can see us - they can
- That we can see other people - we can - we can even see the same people as each other, just not each other
We've tried blocking & unblocking each other, in case that would reset something, and both rebooted our Mac's several times.
Any ideas???

We both did delete our screen names in iChat, and also deleted ALL the prefs manually.
Also, we've tried using entirely different computers to log-in to those same accounts, with the same results - somehow we're blocked from each other.
I think we're both giving up at this stage. We have additional accounts we can use to see each other. But it would be really nice to get to the bottom of it, because if it happens once it can happen again. Who knows? Maybe there are other people in my buddy list that this is happening with right now, but we don't know it. This person just happens to be someone I chat with a lot, and we noticed we weren't seeing each other.

User not showing in Buddy List 10.9.4 Server/3.1.2

I have added a new user to our server, but for some reason they are not showing up in others' Buddy Lists to be able to message them on a local network. If I enable Bonjour they show there, and they are able to access the file server just fine. To make the situation more confusing, looking into the logs I see them appear to be connecting to the chat server correctly. Any ideas as to what may be wrong?

I was able to message the user directly [email protected] and he received it fine, apparently he is just invisible in the Buddies window. Stumped.

Black Horizontal Line in Buddy List...

...Although this appears to be mostly cosmetic, I can't figure out where it came from. In my buddy list, there is a horizontal black line, that divides my buddy list in half, with no seeming relation to status, audio, video, etc,etc. It is just there and never moves.
Any ideas?

IChat - empty buddy list

Hi all,
yesterday I downloaded and installed the iChat Update (Universal) 1.0. Afterwards I was able to connect through AIM, but the buddy list is empty now. Everything worked fine before the update was installed. I didn't change any of the settings. So what's going on? Any ideas how to get this fixed?

Changing port didn't work. The failure occured for me while logged on and before installing any updates. I have since installed the update, and changed the port, and threw away all iChat preferences, and it still doesn't work. No buddies, can't add buddies, can't chat with a buddy by name ("Your security settings prevent you from chatting with this person"). I can't be seen by them either.

Lion Issue - Buddies not in Buddy List

I can see my Buddies in the menu bar drop down but not in my buddy list. Any ideas?

If you have several Buddy Lists that Login to AIM then the Menu Bar iCon drop down will show all those that are On line.
There may be some that are Not in a Buddy List when you view it.
It does similar thing with multi-Jabber Buddy lists
The Drop down will show All but lets say you have Google List, that will only show you your Google Buddies (Buddies added to the Google List)
Of course the other thing is that the Drop Down can display Jabber Buddies whilst you look at a AIM (Login) Buddy list or vice versa)

10.4.6 Update killed my Buddy List. Why?

I just installed the 10.4.6 updater, and my iChat Buddy List has disappeared. When I start iChat, the list appears, but it's blank. I tried adding buddies from my saved chats, but the list remains blank. Has anyone else had this problem? Does anyone have any ideas for solving the problem?

Did you repair permissions after updating?
You might try iChat with another User account.
You also might try downloading and installing again using the 10.4.6 Combo.
