IdeaCentre K230 w/ Vista & Geforce 2 MX400 PCI

I have an issue adding a Geforce 2 MX400 PCI to my IdeaCentre K230.  No matter what I choose in the BIOS for the video option, the PC will only recognize one video output at a time.  If I set the BIOS to load the onboard primary, the device manager only shows the onboard adapter active and shows a yellow error on the add-in card.  If I set the BIOS to use the add-in as primary, the onboard adapter shows an error in the device manager.  How do I get it to recognize and use BOTH outputs at the same time?  I really want dual monitors but don't know how to get that to work.  Thanks in advance!
(mod edit: the K230 is an IdeaCentre, not a ThinkStation.   all references to "ThinkStation" edited to prevent confusion.)

From what I gather, you are trying to use both the onboard video and a video card at the same time, which is a no go. Only way to get on 2 monitors is upgrade that ancient video card to one that can dual display.

  • IdeaCentre K230 - Doesn't detect graphics cards (in PCI-E Slot)

     Hello,
I bought a IdeaCentre K230 like 1 or 2 weeks ago and tried to install a graphics card. It did not work. Is it possible this motherboard (the stock one that came with the desktop) does not detect it as it does not show in the Device Manager? Because it didn't detect an Nvidia one i had before. Sorry I am real new to this hardware stuff.
So I purchased a ATI Radeon HD 4670 graphics card today and tried to install it. I first disabled my on-board graphics driver(s)/adapter (Intel(R) G33/G31 Express Chipset Family) and then I powered off my computer, opened the case, installed the 4670 into the PCI Express slot and put the case back into it's place.
Then I turned on my computer and it was a 800x600 resolution. So I went into Device Manager and checked Display Adapters and I did not see the Radeon. So I opened the CD/DVD drive and inserted the CD that came with the graphics card. Then I ran the installation and it said "Installation complete. Errors have occurred" (or something to that effect). So I was like *** I'm pissed since this is the second card I have tried (previous being an Nvidia). And I'm not sure if I needed to plug the DVI cable for my monitor into the card so I did that and restarted and nothing showed (however I did hear the fan running, so it does have power). So then I plugged in the standard VGA into the adapter thing that came with it (that you plug in a VGA and then you plug the adapter into the card outputting a DVI signal thingy??), got nothing. So then I plugged the VGA into the one that is not on the card but on the computer itself. Then display showed (again, in 800x600). I am sure that the card is physically installed properly as I hear the fan running, and see it running. I also might add that the graphics card does not require additional power as it gets its power via the PCI Express port.
Please, PLEASE help me as to what I am doing wrong.
The Nvidia 9600 GSO did not work because the motherboard did not detect it (according to Geek Squad @ Best Buy). I am afraid that might be the problem of this one too. But I really want a good graphics card to work in my computer.
    Computer Specs:
    Pentium Dual-Core CPU E5200 @ 2.50GHz (5.00 total GHz)
    6.00 GB ram
    Windows Vista 64-bit

I wouldn't say that the power supply would be the problem. It would definitely keep the graphics card from reaching it's full potential.
Generally you would do the following....
    Power off computer.
Flip the switch on the power supply to off.
    Open case.
Insert the card into the PCI-E x16 slot.
Connect VGA/DVI to graphics card. [If required, connect power supply to graphics card. But I see this is not the case.]
    Boot up computer.
    Install driver.
    Adjust resolution/settings.
    Enjoy.
    Try reseating the graphics card.

  • Monitors for IdeaCentre K230

What monitors are compatible for an IdeaCentre K230 4GU?

Any monitor will work.  I assume you are using the Intel integrated graphics GMA 3100.  I just bought the K230 with thr Nvidia 9300 GE and I use a Dell 22inch LCD and a Sony 17inch CRT.  Both work great.

  • Should I buy GeForce 6600 PCI Express or Radeon X300 PCI Express???

Which should I buy GeForce 6600 PCI Express or Radeon X300??? The GeForce 6600 PCI Express is more expensive and I dont know if it has a Programable Pixel Shader. ANYONE COULD YOU HELP ME WITH MY DECISION??

Definitely not the X300, it is not worth it.
Look to the 6600, but beware, users have reported problems with the 6600 series cards and the heatsink lately so it may be wise to look at all your options before you make a choice. Try looking at other forums and steer clear of manufacturer's support forums as they can be biased and content has to be moderated more.

  • Slow/Jerky Video with kt6v\sempron 2400\geforce mx400

    Hello!
I'm hoping someone out there has seen this problem before and can point me in the right direction for how to solve it.  I am putting this system together for my sister.  Here are the system's credentials:
    msi kt6v mainboard
    amd sempron 2400 processor
    256 meg ddr ram, 400mhz
nvidia gforce mx400 agp display adaptor  64meg
western digital caviar 20 gig hard drive
generic (comp usa) 52x ide cdrom drive
    lucent pci lt win modem
windows xp pro  with service pack 2
Mainboard bios has recently been upgraded to  recognize the sempron cpu.
Cpu freqency in cmos is set to 166mhz.  (is this the correct setting?)
    The problem:
When playing various video games, such as Carnival Cruise Lines Tycoon, Trailer Park Tycoon, or The Sims (all of which are great games, btw), the video is extremely choppy/jerky.  It doesn't play smoothly at all.  But it SHOULD!   As a test, if I replace that video card with an  FX5200 personal cinema, it works great!  (but there's no way I'm going to give my sister that fx5200 card!  I need the mx400 to work in this machine.)   I can put that gforce mx400 in another machine (kt4v with amd 2200xp) and it works great.  So this tells me the problem should not be with the display adaptor nor the kt6v mainboard.  But is there a compatability problem between the two?  Is there a setting I've overlooked?  I'm thinking this is probably an issue with the display drivers or the mainboard drivers, I just don't know.  I've spent the last 3 nights trying to figure this one out.  This has me stumped.
Anyone else seen this same problem and know the fix?  Also, anybody know what the recommended cmos settings are on the kt6v  when using the mx 400 display adaptor and the sempron 2400 cpu?  What are the recommended drivers/versions for this mainboard and display adaptor?
    Thanks!!!!!

    No
the GF2 came in mx200, mx and mx400.
    The GF4 came in mx420, mx440 and mx460

  • 64-bit Vista Drivers for PCI Serial device

I've just got an T500 and put Vista 64-bit on it.  I've found (I think) all the drivers for it that it needs, except that there are 2 drivers in the Device Manager that show as not installed/needing update they are:
    Under Other Devices
     - PCI Serial Port
     - PCI Simple Communications Controller
Anyone know what divers I should get to get these loaded properly or what devices/capabilities I am loosing because there are no drivers?
    Thanks,
    George

    George, welcome to the forum,
have you tried using ThinkVantage System Update to see if it can automatically find the drivers for you?
    Hope this helps

  • Vista x64 and PCIe X-Fi Titanium Optical Problems

I am running Vista x64 SP and I have the 2.7.0004 drivers installed and when I try to use Dolby Li've or DTS, I can't use because everything says the current device is in use. I can't get optical to work with my Z-5500 speakers. It works fine on my XP SP3 though. I have dual boot XP/Vista x64.
    E8400
    ASUS Rampage Formula
    4GB DDR 066MHz
    HIS ATI HD4870
    X-Fi Titanium
    XP-32bit SP3/Vista Ultimate-64
    Logitech Z-5500

something else to check even tho you maby already have done is checking if the checkboxes for full controll of the SPDIF is on in windows 7 (I dont know anything about 2008 so cant comment on that) but i know that that 2 checkboxes need to be checked for the digital sound to pass trough to the analog 6 channel wich is needed for your speakers.
just to be clear were talking about the same checkboxes as im not sure how its called in english exactly.
in windows 7 in the lower right? rightclick ont eh speaker and select playback devices
then select SPDIF out and select properties.
then go to advanced and make sure both checkboxes under exclusi've mode are checked.
from my experience it also highly depends on what program you use as not all movie/mediaplayers decode the digital signal to 6 channel analog correctly.
i myself prefer classic media player and in that program i had to rightclick the screen select the audio options and set to to decode to speakers from spdif.
i not sure how exactly your setup is set up but i know figuring out how everything should be set or even finding some settings is a massi've pain.

i tried a borrowed geforce4 mx 440 and it worked normally so i guess the problem is not the psu huh? it may be a dumb question but what if the disk partition size has something to do with old cards? i remember once i had 4gb in the system partition and now i have 15gb.

  • Power Mac G4 MDD EVGA GeForce 6200 PCI 256MB

I am wondering where I can find the .rom for this video card to work in my Power Mac

Mac OSX graphics/video technologies are based on using AGP, not PCI. Although a PCI card will output video to a monitor, it will not be able to use even one of OSX's earliest video technologies, Quartz Extreme.
My first OSX computer was a heavily upgraded Beige G3 (no AGP slots; 500 mhz proc; maxed RAM; PCI Radeon 9200 video card with 128MB VRAM; modern hard drives, etc). With either Jaguar or Panther, the 2d video performance was poor because QE was not enabled. Scrolling, dragging, and any other activity that relied on 2D video performance was poor. Our iMac 400 with one-third the RAM, a slower hard drive and only 8MB VRAM on a much less-capable video chipset (Rage Pro 128-bit) actually gave better 2D scores because its chipset was AGP-based.
Japamac has numerous recent posts here in which he discusses video cards for the MDD.
Footnote: some may jump in to point out that there are hacks to enable QE on a PCI card. That is true but, in the real world, most people applying the hack have removed it because of other problems it causes.
