Ideal compressed format for editing on a Mac?

Hi
I have some AVCHD files I need to edit in PrPro CS5. Is there any good compressed format I could transcode the source files to, in order to get rid of the source files and eliminate the need to render the timeline just to get started with editing without any playback hiccups?
Thanks
Greetings

If you are working in DV, you connect your NTSC monitor to a analog/DV converter and the converter to the firewire port of the Mac.
The manual will have a good description of all the various permutations of this.
If you are working in HDV, your only monitor options are the cards from Kona or Decklink (which give you i/o options) or the Matrox MXO box which is output only through the DVI connector.
I don't believe FCE will let you edit in formats other than DV or HDV so the Kona card would be overkill.
good luck.

  • FCP Sequence compression / format for editing photos for a HD Plasma screen

    Hello Forum
    I'm editing a 10 minute documentary that's mostly based on graphics and photographs, and a voiceover. There's maybe 30 seconds of HD Video in it (Sony EX1 Camera). (But I assume the video will be convertable into any format anyway.)
    The final film will be screened on an 1920x1080 HD Screen.
    What sequence preset should I use? I don't see any 1920x1080 in my final cut pro 5.2.
    I'm somewhat new to the world of HD. Any advice would be much appreciated.
    Thank you.
    Cheers,
    sk

    Thank you for all your replies.
    You guys are right. Sorry it's 5.1.4...
    Let's assume there's no video involved. What would be a good format workflow for a 10 minute film containing audio, graphics and photos only (72dpi jpgs and tiff files)?
    I will receive low res / temp photos for a rough cut. And then high res photos for the final cut.
    I would like to edit offline with a timeline setting that allows me to pan and zoom in/out of photos without much rendering, a fast compression. And then once the cut is approved another setting that allows me to uprez to a higher compression with little effort.
    My setup: Mac Pro (2009) with 3 gigs of RAM (thinking of upgrading to 6) and 512 megs graphics card.
    Any advice is much appreciated.
    Thank you

  • Best or better file formats for editing in PPRO CS4

    I'm currently working with MPEG (from tape transfer) and M2T ( recorded with Adobe Onlocation) files in CS4.
    I switch between Mac and PC depending on whcih system is available. (both: 8 gigs ram , dual quads 3GHZ, graphics ATI 4850 &/or quadra FX)
    Regardless of the OS or system configuration I'm still experianceing choppy video in the Program monitor during editing.
    So I guess I'm wondering if I should be useing a differant file formats for editing.
    end use is HD web video that is served via Delve networks (720P).
    Detailed, positive ideas and commentary appreciated.
    thanks JamesNYC

    If you're capturing via OnLo and it's coming up as .m2t then OnLo sees the device as an HDV device.  This is a temporal codec and as such, decoding can be difficult if your system isn't up to the task.  Since your CPU and memory are up to the task, I would ask about your drive subsystem and exactly which OS you are using?  If you're using a 32bit flavor of Windows, you're not able to use the extra memory and I would suggest you upgrade to Win7 64.
    hope this helps,
    Dennis

  • Transcoding form VOB format (DVD) to other format for editing.

    Hello,
    I've copied the content of a DVD the MPEG-2 VOB format, and I have to editing with that material. I was thinking of transcoding in a other format to work the edit. In what format I can work with in an easy way but keeping the best quality ?
    Thanks for you attention !

    but I never heard about loosing more quality in transcoding.
    Then you don't do this much. Codecs are COMPRESSED formats. That is part of their name...CO...compression. DEC...decompression. Whenever you take a compressed format and convert it to ANOTHER compressed format, you lose image quality. Because compression is a way to throw away certain bits of information yet keep the image looking decent. Going from one format of compression to another...so different bits of information are thrown out...causes loss in quality. So if you transcode and transcode and transcode you lose information every single time. So you get loss in quality.
    Always have.

  • What is the BEST file format for editing HD in CS5?

    We are building a remote production truck and it will be tapeless with all hard disk video recording. We have not decided on what brand of disk based recording system we are getting.
    I am looking for opinions of what the most ideal file format to capture in HD for editing in CS5? What is the highest quality yet fastest and most efficient for editing basic 1080i30 or 1080p30 video for broadcast?
    There are so many devices that capture quicktime but quicktime is crippled to 32bit in windows and we want to avoid it.
    thanks!

    I'm sorry i guess i didn't mean to confuse you with the word "capture" in that question. there are
    tons of hard disk based recording systems out there that "capture" our video to a disk into a file we can import into premiere and edit.
    This will be a live production truck, video will come out of our production switcher SDI into some companies recording device which will have a plethora of codec choices to record with. We want to choose a product that will give us files that will work best in premiere CS5 with gtx460 gfx cards and matrox axio le hardware.  Just wanted to see if anyone who has edited various codecs has noticed if any seem to work faster and better then others.
    there are many companies we are looking at that make such disk based recorders including nnovia,aja,panasonic/p2, fast forward, etc...
    i want to avoid quicktime and am more interested in mpeg4, or mpeg4 part10 (h264), or p2, omf, mxf are possibilities, any opinions?

  • Connecting an iPod formatted for Windows to a MAC

    OK here's my situation:
    I have a Sony laptop (running XP Pro) that my 8GB iPod nano (G2) is currently "synched" to. Last November I got a new iMac (Leopard, 10.5.2), which I've been meaning to figure out how to transfer all my mp3's from my laptop (PC) to iMac (separate issue).
    I never got the chance- my laptop was stolen a week ago. I have yet to break the news to my iPod, which is- I'm guessing- formatted for Windows. I'd like to connect my iPod to my iMac and salvage the 8GB of music on there. I'd estimate that 20% of the music on my iPod was purchased on iTunes, but the rest came from CD's that I uploaded onto my PC. I know about re-downloading purchased music, but what about the rest? I don't have all my CD's anymore =(
    Thank you in advance-
    Josh

    Hey Josh,
    Sorry to hear about your stolen laptop. That stinks.
    But the good news is Macs can read Windows formatted iPods just fine and there are ways to get your stuff off the iPod and onto the Mac.

  • Ideal export format for hdv source movie edited in motion

    Until recently, pretty much all completed projects I've done have been exported to NTSC-DV, but now I'm editing in HDV.
    My most recent project was done with 1920X1080 HDV source footage editing on a 1280X720 canvas in Motion.
    I like to export a web version and then a version of the project for posterity -- ie. the final best-quality (within reasonable final size) version of the movie that I can keep on hand for future uses as yet unknown.
    So, my question then is: what's a good final format to export to? Is there any reason to export to HDV just because I've started with HDV?
    Thanks.

    I use h.264 for a review copy. It will give you a much smaller file size. I think Pro Res is intended to be used as a lossless format to take footage between applications, correct me if I'm wrong. If all you need is a copy to show people, h.264 can give you excellent quality (it's used on Blu-ray discs).

  • Formatting for mail forwarded by Mac mail to Gmail

    I normally use Gmail. When certain people who use OSX Mail forward emails to me, the formatting is 'all over the place', especially if a picture is concerned - the picture arrives embedded and full width, even if it was an attachment in the first place. Is there a preference setting somewhere in Mail that ensures attachments stay as attachments and the formatting is retained? Or is it an incompatability between OSX Mail and Gmail?
    Thanks

    "Mac OS X (10.4.1)"
    First off, you should update your OS to 10.4.11, Mail and install all the updates pertaining to your computer through Software Update. More than likely you are using an outdated version of Mail.
    The last version of Mail for Tiger is v2.1.3.

    Check your HTML settings in the "Viewing" section. HTML enabled?

  • IPod formatted for windows, connected to mac accidentally

    I have an iPod video, 30GB. I formatted it for use with my windows laptop.
    Then, my mother hooked it up to her macbook pro. No syncing took place and it didn't show up in iTunes. However, now neither machine will show the iPod in iTunes. The windows machine, on connection to the iPod, brings up an error message saying the iPod is corrupted. When connected to the Mac, the iPod spontaneously crashes iTunes even before it opens.
    Through a series of unfortunate events, much of my music is not on hard drives aside from my iPod, so any help resolving this issue without restoring the iPod would be greatly appreciated.

    Mac Os X will read Fat 16, Fat32(the windows default for iPod) .
    I believe it will read, but not write to NTFS.
    Windows can not read or write to HFS(Mac OS X format and iPod for Macs) drives.

  • Best Sequence Preset and File Format for Editing HD?

    I'm using Premiere CS4 and I'm starting a new project that was shot in HD. I'm dealing with multiple file formats, as several different types of HD cameras were used. This is for a feature documentary, so I need a balance between  maintaining image quality while sticking with a format that my machine  can handle smoothly. Two questions:
    1. Which HD preset should I commit to for the project (DVCProHD, XDCAM, etc.)?
    2. I want to keep things nice and tidy and convert all of my footage to the same file type. I've found that Premiere works best with AVI files, but I'd like some input on what file format and codec you recommend. I took a stab at converting some files to Microsoft AVI format using the V210 10bit YUV codec, but the file sizes are huge and my system (quad-core processor w/ 12 gigs of RAM) still can't handle smooth playback with them.
    Recommendations? I'm open to purchasing a plugin, 2nd-party file converter, etc. if necessary.
    Thanks,
    Mike

    I would be inclined to use a seq that matches the most prevelent source video you have.
    If you decide to convert everything to one format; both P2 and XDCAM formats are a pretty good balance of file size vs quality IMHO. (both edit very smoothly)

  • Setting uneditable formatting for editable content

    Hey all,
    I'm very new to Dreamweaver (and html/css!) so forgive me if this is simple or I have missed something. I have been Googling what I'm trying to do for the last 2 hours, to no avail, maybe I'm searching the wrong thing.
    I'm designing a template and have just added my editable content. I have a picture (editable_picture), heading (editable_heading) and text (editable_content) that will be different on each page, however I want the size of the picture and the font style, colour and size to remain consistant.
    I've tried entering the following into my css:
    #editable_picture {
        width: 450px;
        height: 300px;
    I've also tried:
    #editable_heading {
      font-size: 16px;
              font-family: Tahoma, Geneva, sans-serif;
              font-weight: bold;
              color: #FFF;
              text-align:left;
    No luck with either. I think I have possibly misinterpreted what the editable content is used for. If I have, can anybody recommend a better way to have different content on each page but maintain a consitant format?
    Many thanks

    I can't seem to assign a particular size to the editable content.
    Nor should you.  Content determines the height of your containers.  Setting explicit height values should be avoided because your site will ultimately contain both long and short pages.
    Your client's should be instructed on how to optimize their images beforehand in a graphics editor.  That is where the image's height & width is established.
    That said, you can add a rule to your CSS code to make all images the same size, however this will be defeated as soon as height & width values are added to the HTML code.
    <img src="some_image.jpg" height="xx" width="xx" alt="some description">
    When asking for help in this forum, it's best to upload your test page to a temporary web space.  Either a commercial one or a TEST folder on your site's destination server.

  • What is the best compression format for 1440 x 1080 24fps HDV?

    I have a short film, around 13 minutes long, which I've recently completed. It was filmed in 1440 x 1080 24fps in HDV. What compressed video format would produce the highest quality "lossless" compression of the film? I'm planning on using the video file as my highest quality master copy –besides the FCP file itself. Thanks.

    Your master should be exported as QT movie (not compression) keeping same settings and self-contained checked (No loss of quality is involved, the result is a perfect copy of each frame from your original media).
    Any other conversion will involve compression then potential loss of quality.
    That master will play fine on your machine but don't expect it to play on PCs.
    However, you can send it to tape or take the exported self-contained file to a post house for DigiBeta or other transfer if you need screening copies of your video.
    For the web H.264 is a great choice, amazing quality and fairly small file size with proper settings.

  • Which format for External HD using Mac OSX Windows Xp, and Vista?

    Hi
    I've had problems with using an extermal HD and am looking for some further information...
    I have recently purchased a 500 g external iomega hard drive. I need it to be compatible with my mac using osx, and with pc's using both Windows XP and vista. I will routinely be needing to transfer files from all three platforms.
    I had reformatted my hard drive to FAT32 on the pc using windows xp and it worked fine, then took it home and used in on my mac, and it is now no longer recognized on the pc.
    The HD is under disk manager is showing that it is formatted as FAT32 but I cannot use the drive. I cannot download programs to use on the PC's to make the drive compatible but could on the mac.
    What are my best options to share files reliably?
    Thanks

    Add NTFS write support to Mac OS instead.
    MacFUSE +3G is a good start.

  • Updating Video IPod Once Formatted for Windows, Now Using Mac

    The subject pretty much explains it all. I'm trying to update my ipod to the latest software version, but when I attempt to update it, it says that it can't be updated because the Ipod is already formatted to Windows.
    What should I do about this situation?
    Thanks

    i do not set to auto update. I see no real point in having 2 hard drives full of the same music. I have backed up my MP3s on 4 dvd's. I like to keep my hard drive clear for other projects.
    There are tools to bring the songs back off the ipod. Maybe I'll let that run over night. The TV shows I purchased were on the windows machine. Maybe they will be lost forever.
    I guess I won't be installing this update anytime soon.

    What the **** is Rosetta? Can you provide some simple instructions, please? Why does Apple make things so difficult? I'm also trying to SIMPLY browse to a shared printer on a Windows XP box (HP LaserJet 1020) and can't install this. Even with what research told me by installing HP's 1022 Mac driver. I don't care what anyone says...Microsoft makes things easy to use and my 3.2 HT SATA 1GB DDR2 computer beats this iMAC hands down when it comes to speed.
    Thanks...Steve.
