Ideal resolution (dpi) for standard 24"x36" posters?

There has long been debate at the various studios I worked for regarding ideal poster size resolutions.
For 24"x36" posters, some studios work in full 300dpi. Others find that resolution too demanding on the computer, and work at half-size (150dpi). Then I was told printers will print movie posters at 72dpi so anything above that is wasted anyway.
So I come to the experts... what resolution are most 24"x36" Hollywood posters done in?

If it goes to a sheet fed press, probably never. Most color printing is done in China now, and though they do remarkable work in the high resolution area, I suspect 175 would be a fair working resolution. I say this as one previous poster here stated 150 was fine for him. But he did not state if that was as a designer or if it was as printing company. At 175, this may be the line count the poster is printed at, and a possibly good match for both party's needs. And if the poster prints at a lower resolution, then both parties have a higher quality file than can be lowered for printing. Thus, you have a very good chance of a win-win situation at this point, and everyone is happy.
If I remember right, at 8 bit, 2' x 3' in 300 ppi is around 150 mgb. So the lower resolution makes the file a lot more managable before the CMYK separations are done.

Sorry, my bad for not being clearer with my question.
What I wanted to know, essentially, was if there was any point working in a document that was 24"x36" @ 300dpi? In other words, is it likely that I will EVER be printing the poster at that size and resolution? Because PSD's can get ridiculously big very fast at those settings.
Without knowing what the printing method will be in the end... heck, the client may want to handle the printing himself... my question pertains more to the working file and how much resolution is considered overkill.

What is the ideal resolution combo for MBP 13" and Projector?

In our school district we are using 13" MacBook Pro's (OS X 10.7 Lion) and external epson projectors, projecting to a Promethean Smart Board. The default resolution for a MBP is 1280X800, that is a no brainer. Now everything I've been reading says that projectors like to be on 1024X768. When we do that the projector resolution dictates that resolution to the MBP screen and the MBP screen is of course distorted. They don't play nice when trying to set independent settings. We've found that 1280X800 for MBP and 1280X960 for the projector works best. When set at these settings and you plug and unplug the VGA adapter the settings on the MBP hold to 1280X800. But we have to keep calibrating the Promethean Smart Board though inbetween plugging and unplugging the VGA adapter's. Any ideas?

Try setting up the projector at 1024x768 as it calls for, but you want to use the best image. This might require a resolution reset as you are dealing with 3 different viewing sources. (ahh, if only they would come up with a standard.
You can try a pram reset with everything up and running, this can sometimes correct distortions.
NVPRAM reset:
Power down the mac, power it back up, before the start up chime, press and hold the following keys:
option,command,P,R,(no commas) and continue to hold these keys till you hear the start chime 2 times. See what you have. You might have to reboot.
Also you can try connecting the projector, fire up the mac then the projector, it might auto-detect. You can try system preferences click detect displays,
As for the smart board, you would have to contact the manufacturer for details.
I know I have not offered much here, but it's worth a try, can't hurt anything.

Does your IT person have stuff locked out? Most school districts have many of the useful tools locked out.
The reason I know this is my wife is a school teacher, and we end up doing most of her multi media stuff on one of our personal computers, because of the lock down imposed on the entire staff.
I hope there is something that might help you here. If not get your IT person to make it happen.(If they can)

What is the recommended image resolution (dpi) for best result in a A0 (plotter) printing?

Is the 300 dpi resolution good enough (images>24bit>1680X1050 pixels) for best printing result in A0 (plotter)?

It sounds almost a trick question. 'How can I use a pen plotter with bit map images?' sort of thing. Plotters are designed for vector artwork, and more suitable for use with Autocad than Photoshop. However there are apparently workarounds, but the question might be more like 'how to convert bit map image for pen plotter?' rather than what resolution you need.
Is there a particular end use for this graphic that requires a plotter? Like laser etch, wood cutter etc. or is it just that the pen plotter can manage A0?

I would appreciate it if someone could advise me as to the optimum resolution, dimensions and dpi for actual photographic slides that I am scanning for use in a Keynote Presentation, that will be projected in a large auditorium. I realize that most projectors in auditoriums that I will be using have 1024 x 1200 pixels, and possibly 1600 x 1200. There is no reference to this issue in the Keynote Tutorial supplied by Apple, and I have never found a definitive answer to this issue online (although there may be one).
Here’s my question: When scanning my photographic slides, what setting, from 72 dpi to 300 dpi, would result in the best image quality and use up the most efficient amount of space?
Here’s what two different photo slide scanning service suppliers have told me:
Supplier No. 1 tells me that they can scan slides to a size of 1544 x 1024 pixels, at 72 dpi, which will be 763 KB, and they refer to this as low resolution (a JPEG). However, I noticed when I looked at these scanned slides, the size of the slides varied, with a maximum of 1.8 MB. This supplier says that the dpi doesn’t matter when it comes to the quality of the final digital image, that it is the dimensions that matter. They say that if they scanned a slide to a higher resolution (2048 x 3072), they would still scan it at 72 dpi.
Supplier No. 2: They tell me that in order to have a high quality image made from a photographic slide (starting with a 35 mm slide, in all cases), I need to have a “1280 pixel dimension slide, a JPEG, at 300 dpi, that is 8 MB per image.” However, this supplier also offers, on its list of services, a “Standard Resolution JPEG (4MB file/image – 3088 x 2048), as well as a “High Resolution JPEG (8 MB file/image – 3088x2048).
I will be presenting my Keynotes with my MacBook Pro, and will not have a chance to try out the presentations in advance, since the lecture location is far from my home, so that is not an option.
I do not want to use up more memory than necessary on my laptop. I also want to have the best quality image.
One more question: When scanning images myself, on my own scanner, for my Keynote presentations, would I be better off scanning them as JPEGs or TIFFs? I have been told that a TIFF is better because it is less compressed.
Any enlightenment on this subject would be appreciated.

When it comes to Keynote, I try and start with a presentation that's 1680 x 1050 preset or something in that range. Most projectors that you'll get at a conference won't project much higher than that and if they run at a lower resolution, it's better to have the device downsize your Keynote. Anything is better than having the projector try and upsize your presentation... you work hard to make it look good, and it's mangled by some tired Epson projector.
As far as slides go, scan them in at 150 dpi or better, and make them at least the dimensions of your presentation. Keynote is really only wanting 72dpi, but I do them at 150, just in case I need to print out the presentation as a handout later, and having the pix at 150 dpi gives me a little help with their quality on a printer.
You'd probably have to drop in the 150 versions again if you output the Keynote to .pdf or Word or something, but at least you have the option.
And Gary's right (above) go ahead and scan them as TIFFs. Sooner or later you'll want to do something else with these slides (like make something for an iPad or the like) and having them as TIFFs keeps your presentation looking good.
Finally, and this is a big one, get to the location for your presentation ahead of time if you can, and plug the laptop in and see what you get. There's always connection problems. Don't let the AV bonehead tell you everything will work just fine ('... I don't have any adapters for a Mac...') . See it for yourself... you're the one that's standing up there. Unless it's your boss, then you better be really sure it works.

The DPI depends on the size of the image to be printed by the image file. A 639 x 960 image could print a 3.5 x 5 photo at 180 DPI. This website explains it further: The Myth of DPI.
So use the smaller photos only in the smaller frames on multiple photo layouts for best results.

I am creating a slideshow from some older photograph which I intend to show with an LCD projector or through a standard TV set. I am scanning the photos into the computer. Is there an ideal resolution that I should use or at least a general "rule of thumb" that I can apply for this sort of end use?

So, there is no reason to go through the extra step of resizing the photo to 300 dpi before moving it into a 300 dpi document? Photoshop Elements does the resize for you without losing image quality?

Display resolution (dpi)

Hi,
I was doing some scaling from my private pictures and wanted to fit the size perfectly on my mbp display.
So, I knew, I have a native resolution of 1680x1050, but there is a third factor: The dpi.
The "standard" is 72 dpi for all pictures you want to see on a display, but I know, the display of the mbp has got a much higher resolution than 72 dpi.
Is there anywhere a page with the exact data of my screen?
I've read something about 120 dpi, but I dont know, if this is right.

Can't change home directory for standard users (admin is OK)

I'm can't relocate home directories for standard users. Relocating works fine for admin users.
When a standard user logs in, they get a message (paraphased) saying "the home directory is not available. If it is located on a server, the server might not be online". If I change the standard user to admin, this message goes away, and everything is fine.
I created a standard user
moved the home directory using the terminal as root: mv UserName /otherlocation/UserName
I then went into users and groups, other options and changed the home directory location.
Rebooted, then tried to log in as the standard users.
Next try - Deleted the standard user and created the same user with admin rights. Followed the above steps and everything works fine.
I don't want this user to have admin rights on my system. Any ideas

the AFP is has always been switched on. As for the path I believe this to be correct. The path I am using is:
afp://musicserver/Users
I'm not at the server right now so I mat have got the afp and : and / in the wrong order here but they are correct on the server.
This however does not seem to put the a folder in the Users folder. Could it be something to do with my external hard drive? I am using a Mac Mini as our server (not ideal but fine for us, or at least was) this is booted from our external hard drive. This is the main system drive which is where the Users data is also stored. I have tried all possible paths I can thing of from replacing the 'musicserver' with the IP address. I have also tried adding the name of the drive to the path (System) but all does not work.
Are you able to suggest anything I have missed? Perhaps I'm doing the path wrong?

Ideal file size for photos

If I am making photo albums in iWeb, what is the ideal file size for the photo file?
My camera now is 7 megapixel, so the original file sizes are about 3 MB, obviously that'll be very slow to load.
To what file size should I save it to make it load at a reasonable speed and still have a reasonable quality? 500 KB? 200 KB?
In case this is a factor, the typical album I make would have about 40 - 50 photos.
Also, what are the best ways to batch converts -- making a group of photos 500 KB instead of 3 MB? I know a few time-consuming ways (ie. individually resaving the files) or using a thumbnail-making program (have used a program called Thumbs Up).

If you are importing your photos directly from iPhoto to iWeb, they will be scaled down to a max dimension of 800x600. If you are using a photo template page or making a gallery page using the following method...

...iWeb will also make your thumbnails for you automatically.
For all your other freeform pages that you might make, it is always a good idea to size your photos down to their usage size. A good rule of thumb is to consider the width of your page, which by default is 700px. Then divide it out by how many photos across you expect to have roughly. So 3 photos across 700 pixels means that the photos should be scaled to roughly 233 pixels wide maximum. Just a rough approximation is fine.
The reason I recommend doing this is that if you drop in a 2500 pixel wide image into iWeb directly, and you only plan on using it as a 233 pixel wide image on the page... iWeb will do a fine job of scaling the photo down to size BUT it will also save the full resolution photo as part of your web page....not to use, but just for safe keeping. And if you ever discover the RSS feed on your website, you will see that iWeb makes all of these high resolution photos available for download, too! So beware if you value your original work! Don't feed them directly to iWeb.

17" high-resolution display vs. standard resolution

Hi,
I'm looking to buy a refurbished MacBook Pro 17" and I'm trying to decide between the 17" high-resolution display and the 17" standard resolution display.
The laptop will be connected to a Studio Display 90% of the time and I'll use the laptop display as a second monitor. Battery life isn't a big concern. I like that a 7200rpm drive comes with the high-resolution display.
I'll be using the computer mostly for text and HTML editing, e-mail, web-based reading, and a small amount of simple photo editing, such as resizing and cropping. I'm replacing a Powerbook G4 17" 1Ghz.
I saw the high-resolution display and I thought the text looked small. It was very sharp and readable, but still small. Unfortunately, stepping down to the next resolution isn't as sharp and clear as the native resolution.
I'm wondering if I will get tired of the small text. Not all applications work well and look as good when bumping up the text sizes. And zooming is kind of a kludge.
Maybe the high-resolution display is better for photo and video editing?
The $200 difference isn't that big of a deal to me, especially since the computer is $2000+.
I'm trying to decide if I should go with the high-resolution display, and I'd appreciate your thoughts if you've had to make a similar decision. Do you find the text large enough? If you like your high-resolution display, what do you use your computer for primarily?
Please let me know if you've read any helpful reviews or comments about the high-resolution screen (other than recent 90-day posts in this forum, which I've already read). Thanks to hiking4ever for your helpful post in the other recent thread.

I have the high resolution display, and I just set the fonts bigger for the applications I use in that application's preferences. Foe example, you can go to Safari>Preferences>Advanced and check the Universal Access box. That will allow you to set the fonts at any size up to 24 pt. I set them at 18 pt., and every Safari Application will open in that size. Same for Mail. That way you don't have to change the resolution. I primarily do Safari and Mail and documents now, although I got the high resolution display for photo editing. But I really do like it, and am glad I got it.

If I export a single slide from Keynote, as PDF, can anyone tell me the dpi for that PDF image? I need it to be 300 dpi.

PDF doesn't have a resolution -- it is primarily a vector format, which means it is resolution-independent. So the text and any vector images will be output as native PDF vectors, and won't have a "dpi". Bitmapped images can be embedded into PDFs, and as far as I can determine, any bitmapped images will be output at whatever their actual dpi was when they were put onto the slide. (There is no way to get more resolution than was there originally.)

The missing link : the MacBook Pro needs to be powered... as in you need to plug the charger in...
In conclusion, you simply plug everything, turn on the MacBook Pro, close the lid, and there you go !

The problem is only for Standard PO
We have reviewed note:454479.1
The file version of POXVCOMB.pls 115.69.11510.28
But we have another test instance this also has the same version , the scenario works fine
So we are confused why this is reproducible only for a particular instance with same file versions
If anyone can suggest a solution pls give me a reply
