Ideal setup?

Does anyone know what is the ideal setup for LR.
In other words, on what disk should you put the (1) the previews, (2) the LR catalog and (3) the program files? All on your C? Or should something be on a separate disk?
Any tips for the best setup are appreciated.

1. Unless you manually configure Time Capsule's IP address, it will get an IP address from the Livebox's DHCP server. The printer connected to Time Capsule will be at the same IP address as the Time Capsule. It doesn't matter how Time Capsule is assigned an IP address (manual vs DHCP) since Bonjour on your client computers will be able to find it automatically in either case.
2. It doesn't matter which access point your client computers use to connect to your LAN - all of them will be able to access the printer connected to Time Capsule.

    Hi,
Making our tablespace in different directory does not improve the performance. See, Basic thing does if you are lauching your text file from different directory
say Drives C , D and F respectively does your hit any performance (your OS is installed on Drive C). I don't thinnk you will getany boost up performance. See Basicaltl what is happening is that, try to launch you textpad and try to open the files from any there then you file will open immediately, if you ask me the reason behind that, you application is already loaded in the Memory to give the Service (same as ORACLE Instance). That's the difference.

  • Ideal setup for a 2tb hdd and 250 gb ssd drives?

Right now my 2tb hdd is empty everything is on the 250gb ssd. When I start saving from different applications say Garageband will it be saved to the 2tb or 250gb drive? or does the 2tb kick in after the 250gb is filled? should I leave it as it is or is there a better way for this to be set up? new to iMacs new to 2 internal drives. BTW just hooked up an external 3tb drive. Many thanks!

What do you mean it is not regonized. Have you opened Disk Utility and the internal is not listed in that?
Just because it doesn't show on the desktop or in Finder doesn't mean the system is not seeing it. There are options in Finder Preferences to show or hide disks freom the desktop and the sidebar in finder.

  • Ideal drives setup for running Logic???

    Hello,
I just purchased an internal 256GB Samsung 840 pro SSD drive. I have an external Firewire 800 2 TB external hard drive (7200 rpm) as well. What would be the ideal setup for running Logic?
    Thanks!
    2011 iMac 27", 16 GB of RAM, Logic Pro 9.1.8, OS X 10.7.5

    Thanks.
Already talked to the tech doing the installation and he said I can stay on Lion.
Going to get rid of the optical drive, like you suggested, and keep the internal HDD to work in conjunction with the SSD. So, I'll put my OS X and Logic on the SSD, samples on the internal HDD, and project folders on the external firewire drive. Is this what you suggest? Did I miss anything?

  • Ideal scratchdisk setup

    Hi,
I bought two 750GB external harddisks (with FW400 and eSata) today (because they were dirt cheap) for use with FCE3.5 on my MacBook Pro (Early 2008). Before I was using my internal disk as a scratch disk.
What would be the ideal scratchdisk setup performance wise?
Should I use all items "Video Capture", "Video Render" and "Audio Render" on the external disk?
Or would spreading these items across my internal and external disk improve performance?
I have one of the disks connected trough FW400, the cheap eSata/expresscard34 card I bought doesn't work with OS X. I will be returning the card, but I'm not sure if go out to buy a more expensive card, it would however allow me to create a RAID 0 setup. But I'm not sure I really need the performance over the hassle of using striped disk set.
I'd like to hear your thoughts.
    Thanks,
    Lech

As Tom said, the ideal setup would be to use your external for storing your media. This includes pretty much everything included in the Final Cut Express Documents folder. This way you can run the application from your computer (internal hard drive), while having all of the capture scratch files, render files, etc. on the external. This should help increase performance by minimizing the use of each drive while running FCE.

  • Video capture setup to external drive

hi guys, I'm a new FCP user, my Canon XL2 is about to arrive any day and I understand I'll need an external drive to prevent screwing up my internal drive. Maxtor has been recommended and has been reliable I see so I'm looking at one of those, but I'm just a little confused about how to capture to an external drive if I only have one FW400 port. I'll use the FW400 to capture video from the camera. But to get it to the external drive, does that mean I have to purchase a USB 2.0 external drive for my MBP 15"? What are my options to have an optimized performing system? Anybody with a MBP15 out there with the ideal setup for running FCP with an external drive (corporate video work, 2GHZ, 2G RAM) and how best to optimize it?
    Thanks.

quick clarification please? After some research I've netted it down to this...
For optimum speed when video editing, I'll can utilize FW800 support using my ExpressCard/34 slot:
Get an eSATA drive(Seagate 500mb? however no FW connect ports on it? some have FW400 and FW800 ports I understand?)
Purchase Express/34 FW800 adapter. This gives me optimum external drive transfer speed into my MBP.
Connect eSATA drive to adapter and I have FW800 external drive capability.
My camera is limited to FW400 for output so I can use my FW400 port to capture through to the faster external drive. Caputuring will always be limited to FW400 anyway (by camera default), however I will take advantage of FW800 external connection when editing the digitized captured material.
I think I got it! Any compatibility problems I should be aware of specifically? Brands? Sounds like a good reliable setup. However, no EC/34 dealers up in here in Canada yet. Any internet recommendations?
    Thanks for your help.

  • Fastest hard drive setup- for creative professional

So with RAM upgrades being out of the question for the next month waiting for competition to drive down prices I turn to my hard disk situation in my new stock mac pro.
I am a creative professional with little to no interest in gaming. I am mearly looking to get the best performance out of final cut and the CS2 family of programs. So let me ask you all this.
With my one 250 gig drive, would this be a good general storage drive for say the OS, program files, music, and documents
While maybe setting up another drive as a scratch drive for photoshop and final cut? I have never setup a scratch disk or had the luxury of doing this. How would this help and how would I do it?
Also, how would raid 0 help me in this situation
Or maybe 10,000 RPM raptor drives, 16meg cache? Or simply 7200 fast enough.
I apologize for the lack of focus with this question, I am simply looking for the fastest setup with internal hard disks I can!
    -Nicholas

First let me say my Raptors have been a RAID 0 for a few years now and they are solid drives compared to my dead Seagate and LaCie external (uses WD IDE drives, but it could have been the LaCie SATA interface)
Once they are properly Zeroed first in Disk Utility (before the RAID set) so the driver software doesn't play guinea pig with my data, they are very good drives. Enterprise level for sure. 24/7, quiet (at first they make slight clucking sounds) and fast as all heck.
Now to answer the original posters question.
RAM is the key to better CS2 performance up to about 3.6GB I believe, then after that I think the memory spills over to the "scratch disk" or boot drive. Now if your boot/scratch drive is a lumbering 500GB, then of course your scratch is going to be slow. With a scratch your trying to mimic the speed of RAM, so it has to be really fast. Like a stripe pair of Raptors for instance.
So having enough RAM to cover all your open apps and files, a GB for Mac OS X and you should be set. If your working on really huge Photoshop/Ampeture/Video files, then a stripe set of Raptors as a scratch/working disk with daily auto backup to a 500GB stock file drive is ideal.
A 150GB Raptor as a boot/app/itunes/bare bones "home" drive with files on another drive is the ideal setup. Mac OS X swaps memory, caches, grabs a iTunes song, small reads and writes to the boot drive all the time. A small, slim filled boot drive, below 50% filled, with fast rotation and access speed, is ideal. Less de-optimization because changing fles are kept off of it.
People notice a immediate difference in Mac OS X with a Raptor as a boot drive.
Note: Striping like mine doesn't give much more performance benefit as one Raptor is enough to speed up Mac OS X if bulky files are placed on another drive. I had stripe my 2 74GB Raptors because I needed more room and the 150GB didn't exist.

  • New Time Capsule: Ideal Configuration Advice needed for dual band

I am updating/changing my wireless network to incorporate a 2TB Time Capsule instead of an Airport Extreme (not dual band but 80211.n). I have 2 old Airport Expresses (80211.g) that I will replace with newer 80211.n versions for AirTunes and wireless printing. My Airport Extreme still works and can also be used to extend the network.
I want to set up the new version of the network to use the dual band wisely given the items in my household that will be using it. I’m afraid I don’t quite understand what the ideal setup would be and hesitate to dismantle my currently working system before I’ve mapped out what I ought to do for the new one.
The wireless items that need to use the network:
    MacBook Pro (circa 2007, Intel)
(needs to be backed up on Time Capsule daily, holds the large iTunes Library & large iPhoto library)
    iBook (circa 2004)
    iPhone 3GS
    Wii
    LG blu ray player
(n compatible... not currently in my network but will be added once the new network is up and running... hoping to use it to wirelessly download HD movies at 720p at least)
AirTunes (2 systems, using Airport Express units)
Canon printers (2... not wireless themselves but using Airport Expresses... I have 2 old Expresses or I can use the Extreme or the TC or piggy back on one of the Expresses that is supplying AirTunes)
TiVo series 2 DVR wireless connection (I do not know if this is n or g compatible. It’s several years old so I suspect g.)
Can someone point me to documentation that will help me understand my choices and possibilities, not just the technical how-to? Is there an ideal setup that's obvious to those of you with experience?

Hello KristenLC. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
There are a number of things to take into consideration when "designing" a network. One of them is the bandwidth requirements of the network clients. Staying with this topic and based on your hardware: the MacBook Pro (Time Machine backups), LG player (Video streaming), & TiVo (Video streaming) will all require the most bandwidth. Streaming audio to the AirPort Express Base Stations (AXn) would most likely be the next in line for bandwidth. The iPhone, Wii, and iBook would probably require the least.
As such, you want to place your networking clients on the appropriate network infrastructure that would provide them with the best bandwidth possible for their needs. Ethernet will provide the best bandwidth, followed by 5 GHz 802.11n, 2.4 GHz 802.11n, and then, 2.4 GHz 802.11g.
So with not knowing where the desired location of your hardware, I can only recommend the following:
    1) Connect the MBP, either by Ethernet or 5 GHz 802.11n, to the Time Capsule (TC).
    2) Connect the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn), by Ethernet, to the TC.
    3) Connect the LG, either by Ethernet or 5 GHz 802.11n, to either the TC or AEBSn.
    4) Similarly, connect the TiVo, either by Ethernet or 5 GHz 802.11n, to either the TC or AEBSn.
    5) Join both AXn to either the TC or AEBSn by 5 GHz 802.11n.
    6) Connect the iBook, either by Ethernet or 2.4 GHz 802.11g to the TC.
    7) Connect the iPhone by 2.4 GHz 802.11g to the TC.
    8) Connect the Wii, either by Ethernet or 5 GHz 802.11n, to either the TC or AEBSn.
Can someone point me to documentation that will help me understand my choices and possibilities, not just the technical how-to?
One excellent source would be from the Take Control series of guides. In particular, I would recommend that you check out: "Take Control of Your 802.11n AirPort Network" by Glenn Fleishman.

  • IPhone enterprise setup - security concerns

    Dear all,
My company (3000+ users) is in the process of integrating the iPhone into the enterprise, and the ideal setup would be :
    - OTA (Over The Air) sync of calendar and contacts with ActiveSync
    - OTA push mail with ActiveSync
    - ActiveSync policies enforcement (like passcode, etc...)
    But :
    - Users will have to sync their apps, music, photos, podcasts, ... from home; we do not wish to deploy iTunes on corporate computers; this could represent an important loss of productivity, and too much to cope with for our Helpdesk.
First question : does this make sense ?
Secondly, my concern as the company's security officer is : what happens to the corporate data when the iPhone is synced (and backed up) with the employee's private (aka. home) computer ? Does iTunes save Exchange data (settings, e-mails, calendar, contacts) to the computer ? If yes, is there a way to prevent this ?
Any answer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
    jdm7

Cam you clarify your questions? What does "IT people warn that if include it in the server for sync will breach security on patients data" mean?
Do you mean if you sync with Exchange and there is patient info on the iphone? AHA.org says that encryption is not required, BUT it may be expected. IF Encryption is not required, but you do have patient data on the iPhone then you must at least:
    1. Use SSL to sync with Exchange - this would protect the data in the air
    2. Use the Apple Enterprise tools to force password lock on the iPhone and force a data wipe if so many incorrect passwords were entered.
That is at least at a minimum.

  • Improve Wireless Setup

Had house wired for Ethernet when built (3 kids). Was using  wired Dlink and switch(?), then Wireless setup from Linksys 150N. Dlink has now quit (completely dead, so it was removed) But before it died I bought 300N and setup as stated below.
Cable modem in basement and weak signals on second floor and other end of house. Attached Linksys 300N to one of the upstairs wired ports. Had changed the 150n to 192.168.0.1 and 300n to 192.168.1.1 and am using different ssids and channels on the two wireless routers. Works but depends on where wireless device is in house when signed on for best speeds.
After Dlink removed attached the 150N to the cable modem. From reading posts, it appears that this is not optimal setup for these two wireless routers. Would swapping the 300n with the 150n on the cable modem and placing the 150N on the second floor and using the same SSID improve wireless setup. If so, what configuration steps, ip addresses, channels, etc would be optimal. Would like to keep Guest access on the 300n for tablets and smartphones of guests, if possible. Thanks in advance.

The Dlink was the first router I had. Wired only. It was connected to modem in basement where cable was installed.  IthenconnectedaWRT150Nlateronforwirelessacess. It was connectedtoDlinkinbasement.Notanadequatesignalforsecondfloororotherendofhouse.

    1. Would the current setup be improved if I swapped the router locations E1200 to basement and  connect it to modem and plug WRT150N upstairs on second floor? Better speed or coverage on first and second floors?
    2. Is the WRT150N reducing the speed of the 300N or are they broadcasting independently?
    3.  Should the current setup be scrapped? If so, what would be ideal setup for these two routers to maximize their coverage and speed? I would like to make use of the equipment I have, but I don't know how to get the most out of them.
The wired outlets except for the one that the  E1200 is connected to all plug into a switch connected to the WRT150N. The E1200 wired outlet connects directly to the WRT150.  I am not sure what questions to ask. Thanks for responding.

  • I need ideas on my computer system setup.

My computer use has evolved primarily as a database for my music. I have almost 17,000 carefully selected songs in my iTunes collection. For years I have had an iMac and a Pro with each backed up with an external hard drive and Time Machine. I also have an 80 Gb iPod classic and a 64 Gb iPad with all of my music split between the two. I stream all this stuff except for the iPod through two Airports into two different stereos. I stream my iPad in my car and connect my iPod to the car stereo.
As my equipment is showing some age, I'm just looking for ideas on an ideal setup for the future. I'm trying not to have too much stuff. I've thought about just having a Pro and a 128 Gb iPad, and that's it. My primary concern is just having everything backed up(I use iCloud also). My iPod and iMac are 2007 models, and my iPad is the original. My Pro is an '09 model.
I would like to simplify things as much as possible. Any ideas from any of you music afficionados?

You're pretty much stuck then.  You either have to use a computer and iTunes10, or synch the device with a computer which requires an OS version compatible with the mobile device hardware (in your case also iTunes10).  I know of several other people in a similar situation and unless you void your warranty, do some risky things to the phone, and have a PC to run special software, I haven't seen any other way to get media transferred.  You can go to an Apple Store and ask, as I did, and the person will stare at you in bewilderment since they may never have seen a computer so old as to not be able to run iTunes10 and cannot fathom why you do not simply go out an buy a new computer.

  • Dual Radeon video card -- Second card Unknown/4th monitor

My initial plan was to use four monitors on my Radeon HD 6790 as follows:
    1 Single-link DVI-D = monitor1 dvi
    1 Dual-link DVI-I = monitor2 dvi
1 Display Port = monitor3 dvi with adapter
    1 HDMI = new monitor
This did not work as I could not use the hdmi port with the second dvi plugged in so I decided to buy a second cheaper ati card (the 6450) to power the fourth monitor. Well of course that did not work as well since the 2nd video card was identified as UNKNOWN via the Ctalyst control Center(amdcccle).
This is how I currently have my monitors plugged in:
    6790 (Main card):
      1x dvi
      1x dvi via DisplayPort
      1x hdmi
    6450 (Secondary card):
      1x dvi
I tried for two days to get the second card identified by the Catalyst driver and I ended up borking my system in the process. So now I am on week two of getting this setup to work with no avail so I decided to post a new thread.

Notice the fourth monitor is labeled as "1-Default monitor" instead of hdmi (or whatever) and the second card is not listed.
I am literally at my wit's end trying to figure this out. So basically I am wondering if anyone has a clue where to begin trying to get the 2nd video card identified or is it even possible with the current Catalyst driver? I know my hardware can power it fine as it works perfectly on my Windows gaming partition.
    Thanks in advance

I have it working now using catalyst-total but with separate X sessions on each monitor. Not the ideal setup but it works for now.

I had to manually edit my xorg.conf and add the values for the second video card/fourth monitor. I cannot figure out how to take a screenshot of all 4 X sessions so here is a picture of the setup:

  • RTorrent: move downloads to different directories depending on tracker

    Hi!
I would like rTorrent to move completed downloads to different directories depending on the trackers in the torrent. An ideal setup for me would be something like this:
    torrents/completed/tracker_x
    torrents/completed/tracker_y
    torrents/completed/tracker_z
    torrents/completed/unknown_trackers
    torrents/incomplete
    torrents/torrent_files
    torrents/session_data
Any hints/links/etc for me? I think i can make something work if rTorrent could pass the .torrent file path and downloading directory to a bash script

very lazily copied out my .rtorrentrc
    32 schedule = watch_directory_1,10,10,"load_start=/home/share/media/torrents/foo/*.torrent,d.set_custom1=/home /share/media/video/foo"
    33 schedule = watch_directory_2,10,10,"load_start=/home/share/media/torrents/bar/*.torrent,d.set_custom1=/home/s hare/media/video/bar"
    39 on_finished = move_complete,"d.set_directory=$d.get_custom1= ;execute=mv,-u,$d.get_base_path=,$d.get_custom1="
there's also this, but i think it doesn't actually move the files; it makes symlinks.

  • Recording Stand-alone Soft Synths & Virtual Instruments in Audition 3

    Hi People,
Have a little problem which I'm struggling to figure out.
I have been using Cool Edit Pro for several years. My set up has always enabled me to record any standalone Software Synths via my sound card. I have always had it set up so my sound card plays through patch one and records through another patch enabling me to record in the multi track editor with no problems at all and my set up records only the soft synth/instrument, and not any waves previously recoded. Instead just plays them back so I can build up my music and play along at any given time. Although this is a rather different approach to doing things, it suites me down to the ground and I'm happy to create this way
My problem has come upon whilst trying out the new Adobe Audition 3, which is based around ASIO Drivers. Because of this I can no longer run another program (Stand alone soft synth), because Adobe hogs the ASIO driver and will not allow another program to be run at the same time. I can use the Adobe windows driver for audition no problems and I am able to continue recording how I did with Cool Edit, but I would much prefer to go along with auditions ASIO drivers to make sure I am recording with the best quality and reliability.
My Sound card is an E-MU 1616 with breakout box. I have tried numerous ways with the patch mixer to get around this, for example I have tried using my sound cards driver for audition and ASIO4ALL2 for my soft synths. One of which is Hypersonic 2, and the other being SampleTank. I cannot for the life of me get my set up and running how it was with cool edit.
I must admit that although I have played around with my settings, it could be something simple I need to do that just hasn't jumped out at me yet. My evaluation of Audition 3 runs out in 20 days and I'm almost sure that there is a way to enable my set up to work how I want it to before I can go out and buy Audition 3. I'm very comfortable with audition 3, naturally. I love the changes and extra features it has now along from the cool edit days.
I have looked into other solutions as well after scouring message boards, one of which was Cycling 74 Soundflower, this sounded like it could be an answer but unfortunately it is Mac only. If Adobe did Audition for Mac then I wouldn't hesitate in going down that route...
My other solution is to have a second computer, either a modified mid range P C, or even a Mac, to act as my synth station and have my various software synths and such running on there and playing out to my recording PC with Audition on. This would free up the ASIO to be used by Audition solely. It's a long way around but wouldn't cost the earth and would be a simple enough idea to set up. But surly, I shouldn't need to go this far out to get my ideal setup.
Anyhow, I would much appreciate any advice and ideas to help me solve this problem; I will keep working at it in the mean time.
Hope my explanation makes sense above, I can appreciate that there are other ways like just going along with another program and such, but in all honesty I like the way I work and don't really want to move on, I'm more bothered about just getting on and recording new ideas in the environment I'm so use to. I love the way Cool Edit/Audition works for me and I have developed my own methods with the software over the years. Working with just audio suits me to the ground as I record and chop up my own Guitar bass and drums, along with sounds from my field recorder and a host of other methods and ideas.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi!
As long as your softsynths comes in the VSTi format (most of them do now), you can insert it on a track in Audition, which has 'host' capabilities from V3.
In the Multitrack, insert a new MIDI track from the 'Insert' menu (note: MIDI Track, not just 'MIDI').
On that track pane hit the 'Sequencer' button, and it will open in a separate window. In the pane left of the keyboard you can insert your VSTi of choice, and make your MIDI connections.
Back on the Main track pane, engage the 'L' button for Live monitoring. Actual recording (of MIDI) is done in the Sequencer window.
The usual, and recommended workflow is to keep the MIDI tracks 'open', i.e. you can edit the sound in your instrument and even the notes played at any time in the process, compiling the actual audio as the last step in the mixing.
If you kind of 'insist' on doing it the old way, you can export the audio from your recorded MIDI+VSTi creations track by track like this: Leave the Sequencer window open, make a selection in the multitrack that covers the time span you have played. Solo the track (will mute all others), and use File / Export Audio Mixdown. Use 'Master' as the source. This will give you a wave rendering of what's currently in the MIDI sequencer. Qualitywise this is better since it's all internal and digital instead of in/out of soundcards with DA/AD conversion etc.
I haven't found a method for a 'live' wave recording while you play, but there may be one...
If you purchase Audition it comes with Help files explaining this in more/better detail. ;)
