Ideal size for library?

Is there an "ideal" size for the library? I notice that after 1gb iPhoto slows a bit.
What are some suggestions for the optimal size before moving it to an external HD? Mahalo. JB

You should really not be having any problems with that much RAM, unless your expectations for performance are really high - is the slowdown disproportionate?
About what icon size are you using for the Organize view, how big is your screen, etc.? iPhoto 4 was dog slow, and iPhoto 5 got slower, but iPhoto 6 has been nothing short of zippy.
You should try rebuilding your thumbnails if you haven't recently. Cmd-Option while launching iPhoto brings you four checkbox options. If you have the time, pick the first three, rebuild, and see if that helps (it's the iPhoto equivalent of take two aspirins and call me in the morning)

  • Maximum Size for Library

Is there a maximum recommended size for the iPhoto library? I have 20 000 + photos in mine....
    Thanks.

iPhoto is designed to operate with up to 250,000 photos - a practical maximum depends on how fast your processor is, how much memory you have and how much disk you have
I have 30,000 photos on a 2.1 GH G5 2.5 GB RAM with faces identified for all and places for about 1/2 (iPhoto '09) - it is getting a bit slow but still acceptable

  • What is the ideal size for you music artwork?

I wonder what the ideal artwork is for your music?
Because on the pictures below you can see that there is still som white on the upper and bottom place of the artwork and it is a 600 x 600 artwork.. And I Have an iPhone 4S so the artwork needs to be high resolution
    Thanks

Trim off any unsightly borders in an image editor and resize to square of similar size to the original, or smaller if you want to save space. There is no point resizing a 200x200px image to 600x600px, but reducing a larger image sourced from the web would be a good move.

  • Ideal size for publishing for iPad

I'm creating a interactive eBook with pages being designed in Edge Animate. As of revision 28 of the DPS viewer, the 20px iOS status bar will always be displayed. As a result, I set my article size and folio size (landscape only) to be 1024 x 748. However, the in the viewer there is a 20px vertical black line that overlaps the far right edge of my article. How do I fix this? What is the correct folio size and article size when targeting landscape iPads?

Thanks for your replies. I've set the document size/margins as recommended by joev.
Joev - I'm getting a 12 pixel black bar on the right side of my articles ...
What is this and how do I remove it?
    Thanks,

  • Ideal size for pdf portfolio?

i made mine in InDesign and exported it and it is 1M.  from what i've read it should be fine, but is this too big to send to prospective employers?

Anything under 5MB is okay more or less. The main issue is how fast it will load on the receiving end. You may want to upload an swf file to your server and then email a link to it. It will load fast and turn pages faster. I've done it both ways. PDF and SWF link.

  • Best Slide Size for SlideShow

I am preparing a slide show to be presented on a large screen television set. A 50 incher.
What would be the ideal size for my slides to be sized before I add them to the iDVD slide show board? Better to save them as pdf files or simple jpeg images?
I tried to look this information up on the iDVD help menu on my computer but the help function does not work. Thanks.

  • How does one change the font size for folders and/or file lists in the Bookmarks Library?

How does one change the font size for folders and/or file lists in the '''Bookmarks''' Library?
Since the upgrade to version 9.0.1 of Firefox, the Bookmarks feature changes are confusing me. They seem to be confusing themselves as well. The list of bookmarks has changed. The font size is so small that my aging eyes cannot read it without fogging the screen with my breath. Some folders are out of alphabetical order (where I know they were previously good), and some are missing altogether (folders to which I frequently add references).
As for missing or deranged files or folders, was there something that I should have done or now need to do to recover those after the upgrade (or before)?
    With regard to font size,
    1. there is no “Edit Bookmarks” or like option to edit the list in this version
    2. the “zoom” option in the “view” list of functions is greyed out when in “Show All Bookmarks” window
    3. expanding the browser window has no effect on font size
    4. “Preferences” settings for font size has no effect in that window either, including advanced settings
    5. “Help” offers none that I can find.
    Can any of you Help?!?

  • Is there a maximum size for iTunes library

Is there a maximum size for the iTunes libary for windows 7?

Not as far as I know.
My Music Library has 17080 songs (108.38 GB) in it, plus films, Podcasts and a few iTunes U programmes, and I am aware of others using this forum who have larger libraries than I do.

  • Is there a recommended size for the iPhoto Library

I have a large iphoto library .. and when I say large i mean it .. over 500GB ... mostly RAW files... over 50,000 images
And even if my system was handlying things great till now .. i7 processor with 16GB of RAM .. I can see the system slowing down a bit lately ..
Wondering if there's a reccomanded library size as I can't find any info .. and yes I know i can break up the library but i don't want to do that ..
I do use Lightroom .. but don't like the way it organize things .. and also use Aperture .. but ... not impressed at all .... and having a feeling Apple will soon pass it out .. no, i don't have any inside information .. just my feeling.
I just would like to know if there's a max size in order to avoid a DB corruption .. or something similar.
Or max size for best performances ..
    thanks

No max size and as to preformance that mostly has to do with your ahrdware - and youve got great stuff
Others have reported larger libraries but yours certainly is large
best protection against corruption is good backups

but i got about 4 TB attached to my mac that i would all like to be backed up. so far i have been using ChronoSync… but with a purchase of a new iMac plus a 2TB time capulse i wonder how to get 4GB backed up by TimeMachine… can a Time Capuse Join Together connected drives as one backup volume ?
    No.
or can i join multiple local drives for TimeMachine to backup onto ?
Yes, you can make a "concatenated RAID set," also known as a JBOD ("Just a bunch of disks") that is treated as a single volume, and use it for TM backups. See Disk Utility's Help for instructions.
That may not be your best solution, though. If any one of those disks fail, you may lose all your backups. And the initial backup will take a very long time.
Depending on what's on the various drives, you might want to use Time Machine to your Time Capsule for your boot volume, and perhaps some others with data that changes frequently.
If you have a lot of fairly static data on some of those other drives, however, it might make sense to back them up separately, and less frequently, to locally-attached disk(s) via another app.
That would also give you the option of disconnecting the externals and moving your Mac around the house but still back it up wirelessly, as long as it's in range of your TC.

  • Ideal Drive Size for TM Back Ups

I have a new iMac with 250GB hard drive, recently we have been receiving notifications that the 140GB external drive used for TM is full, and we are only getting 5 days of Back Up.
Could someone advise what is the Ideal size BU drive for Time Machine? I think I would like to have a least 30-45 days worth of Back up maintained. I am looking a purchasing a new external to put TM onto.
Any advice on Firwire vs. USB?
    Thanks.
    MK

Is this a home setup, or a business setup?
Do you have TM configured for full backups each run (default), or have you configured it to backup only selected folders? That will make a huge difference in the size of each backup.
I forget if TM supports incremental and/or differential backups.
Differentials/incrementals only BU files that have been modified since the last backup. Obviously a space saving method.
If it does not support dif/inc, then to get 30 days of backup, you need to calculate the total size of the folders you are are backing up and multiply by 30.
That'll be a rough estimate of your minimum drive size.
However, best practice says you should store backups off site. (If something takes out your system, it may also take out your connected BU device as well)
A lot can happen in 30 days, so you may want to consider rotating backup media on a periodic basis - meaning you'll need at least 2 devices. The unused device needs to be stored somewhere other than in the computer room.
Since the backup period will be shorter, the size of the device can be decreased.

  • Ideal file size for photos

If I am making photo albums in iWeb, what is the ideal file size for the photo file?
My camera now is 7 megapixel, so the original file sizes are about 3 MB, obviously that'll be very slow to load.
To what file size should I save it to make it load at a reasonable speed and still have a reasonable quality? 500 KB? 200 KB?
In case this is a factor, the typical album I make would have about 40 - 50 photos.
Also, what are the best ways to batch converts -- making a group of photos 500 KB instead of 3 MB? I know a few time-consuming ways (ie. individually resaving the files) or using a thumbnail-making program (have used a program called Thumbs Up).
    Any other suggestions? Thanks.

If you are importing your photos directly from iPhoto to iWeb, they will be scaled down to a max dimension of 800x600. If you are using a photo template page or making a gallery page using the following method...
    http://www.mac.com/web/en/Blog/013C4180-4787-4847-BAAB-319222AFC652.html
...iWeb will also make your thumbnails for you automatically.
For all your other freeform pages that you might make, it is always a good idea to size your photos down to their usage size. A good rule of thumb is to consider the width of your page, which by default is 700px. Then divide it out by how many photos across you expect to have roughly. So 3 photos across 700 pixels means that the photos should be scaled to roughly 233 pixels wide maximum. Just a rough approximation is fine.
The reason I recommend doing this is that if you drop in a 2500 pixel wide image into iWeb directly, and you only plan on using it as a 233 pixel wide image on the page... iWeb will do a fine job of scaling the photo down to size BUT it will also save the full resolution photo as part of your web page....not to use, but just for safe keeping. And if you ever discover the RSS feed on your website, you will see that iWeb makes all of these high resolution photos available for download, too! So beware if you value your original work! Don't feed them directly to iWeb.

  • What is the ideal Still Size for Final Cut Pro?

I am suing stills in my Timeline. Right now they look really bad. They look great in the Viewer but they look like to crap in the Canvas and Timeline. The stills are 2896x1944.
What's the ideal size so they will maintain the same quality in the Timeline?
Message was edited by: Host <to clarify title>

I am suing stills in my Timeline.
Not sure what legal means you are using to sue your stills..who's your lawyer?
Okay now seriously, your Canvas crap is because it's just a low res proxy. Spit out a self-contained movie and look at it in Quicktime or better yet look at it through a broadcast monitor for a more accurate representation.
In terms of size you want to keep your total pixels to under 4000. And if you're not making moves on the stills then make them the same size as your sequence.
