IdeaPad 2 Flex 15 direct gpu missing

Hello!
One of My freinds bought an Ideapad Flex 2 15. The machine should have NVIDIA® GeForce®
GeForce 840M 2 GB onboard, but Windows 8.1 cannot recognize it. In the device manager is only the cpu-s intel vga present. In the bios is no option for the direct gpu.
Is it possible that a wrong machine was sent to him from the seller?

Bumps! any ideas guys

• Banner over wmode=direct gpu accelerated player

How to position banner over a gpu video player? If i'm setting wmode=opaque, gpu acceleration doesn't work and CPU is working instead of GPU.
What choises do i have?
Thanks.

Well there is always a solution. I have implemented flash banner-close button and for both button and flash banner, set wmode=direct and all is working. But it's still was bugged, sometimes disappearing/appearing.
So i have created in-player banner and now everything is fine.
I was asking for solutions, but didn't get it here... On official Adobe forum. It's a shame...

• Flex and GPU rendermode artifacts

Hi,
is there any fix for those rendering issues that occur when rendering Flex UI with GPU rendermode?
I plan using Flex for my map app where GPU rendermode really helps to move the map smoothly but this mode cause missing backgrounds on text inputs, triangles on buttons etc ... so it is completely unusable.
I have tried some invalidate methods but nothing helped.
Appreciate any suggestions and ideas!
Thank you!

Thanks for the enquiry.
I cannot put that online for now as i am behing corporate firewall.
if you are looking to simulate then may be you can try invoking a plain java method which returns collection of objects and
populate that in data grid.

• Wish To Use Flex 2 For My University Project

Dear All
I am a mature student studying a Computer Science Degree in
the UK .
For my final year project, I am creating a Stock Market
Simulation with a Database back end (e.g. SQLite ?) and some kind
of front end, both to be run a a stand-alone machine.
I have a 28 weeks to design, build and run it for my
supervisors. I would like to push myself academically by building
the software using Flex 2, for the GUI and even to carry out any
calculations or processing needed for the simulation to operate
correctly.
My questions are
1) Is it possible to create the simulation as I can find no
definitive way to connect Flex 2 directly to a database back end in
a similar way to ADO.net?
2) If it is possible which book do you recommend to get the
best and quickest results out of Flex 2?
Thanks In Advance
Steven

You are correct, Flex does not natively connect to any
database. Further, security restrictions on both the browser and
the Flash Player prevent access to *any* client resources, such as
the filesystem.
So if you use standard Flex, you will need some back-end web
technology. This can be almost any platform/language you choose.
Now, the newest, coolest thing in the Adobe world is AIR. AIR
applications can be written using Flex, Flash, HTML and javascript,
and have full access to client asseets. AIR is essentially an
internet delivered desktop application.
AIR has SQLLite database built-in.
AIR is currently in public Beta. I do not know what will be
available as far as non-commercial or educational licensing when it
is realeased.
I don't have a book to recommend, but here is a partial list

• Deployment of Flex app to web and app server

Hi
I'm working on putting a Flex front-end on an existing J2EE
app which gets deployed as an ear file. The architecture consists
of web server, app server and database server. Is the following
approach to deployment possible / recommended?
My Flex app will be deployed to the web server. The J2EE ear
file will be deployed to the app server (Weblogic). BlazeDS will be
bundled within the ear file as a war file. Remote Objects will be
configured in my BlazeDS configuration files to enable me to access
the code in my J2EE app. In the compiler options of my Flex app,
I'll be setting the server root folder and server root URL to point
to the BlazeDS war file on my app server.
At present I'm at the stage where I can run my Flex app
directly from Flex builder on my development PC and it's able to
connect tto the J2EE app, which is running on the app server
(Weblogic) also on my development PC. I can't find documentation
explaining how to extend this to work on a multi-tier architecture.
Thanks
David

• Three Layer Architecture, Can we do it using Flex?

If we have COM objects or .NET objects residing on an Application Server, can we invoke them using Flex?
or
Does Flex itself provide facility to create a middle layer components?

Hi,
Flex cannot directly invoke any COM or .NET objects on the server. I don't that even LCDS (Live Cycle Data Services) is able to do that directly, since it's Java based.
Having said that you can access your COM or .NET objects using ColdFusion or by means of some custom Java code that would hook up the gateways with the Flex frontend. Another alternative would be to use WebORB which supports deployment directly on .NET and is able to publish .NET objects as remote services to be consumed by Flex.
Hope this sheds some light on the matter.

• Building Flex application with Flex Builder in a Remote Server - Cloud Computing

Hey Guys
I have a query or its confusion probably
I was just thinking if this kind of solution is existing or possible with say cloud computing or anything else?
This is what we all probably do for building our flex application?
1. There is Remote Server hosting our source code
2. Developer check out the code in their system locally by some Configuration tool like Perforce, CVS etc
3. Developer Install Flex Builder IDE locally and open the IDE and then create.build locally and then on testing check in the code in repository
All this is fine but we have some problem here
a. We have to get all the source code checked out/downloaded in some local machine
b. We have to install Flex Builder in each every developer machine with license.
A possible modification in the above can be as follows
1. Don't download/check out the source code locally in each machine
2. Create a mapped network drive of the Remote Repository and then work directly with the mapped network drive
3. Install Flex Builder locally
4. Start Flex Builder create a Flex Project with source code in the mapped network drive
But this has some potential problem as now the building of the flex application directly work with the mapped network drive. This is very slow especially when we Keep the "Build Automatically" Check box to true
My question is that can we have a solution like this ?
1. There is Remote Server hosting our source code
2. There is another 2nd Remote Server which support workspace for each user
3. Flex Builder installed in the 2nd Remote Server
4. Each Developer connects to the 2nd Remote Server log in to their workspace
5. Each developer check out code by connecting to 1st Remote Server. This code which is checked out now goes in their workspace in the 2nd Remote Server
6. Start Flex Builder instance which is running in the 2nd Remote Server
5. Each developer open source code modifies, build application in their workspace and check
I think this is something that I heard cloud computing can do ? Do anyone have any idea whether this kind of environment is possible in Flex or can anyone suggest something which is almost close to this ?
Regards
Biswamit

Hi
The concept of cloud computing is not even very clear to me
I think this is what I understood about it ...........from this link http://communication.howstuffworks.com/cloud-computing.htm
It says
"Instead of installing a suite of software for each computer, you'd only have to load one application. That application would allow workers to log into a Web-based service which hosts all the programs the user would need for his or her job. Remote machines owned by another company would run everything from e-mail to word processing to complex data analysis programs. It's called cloud computing, and it could change the entire computer industry"
"There's a good chance you've already used some form of cloud computing. If you have an e-mail account with a Web-based e-mail service like Hotmail, Yahoo! Mail or Gmail, then you've had some experience with cloud computing. Instead of running an e-mail program on your computer, you log in to a Web e-mail account remotely"
My issue is not with the license. The solution that I am looking for is
1. Don't want the developer to download the source code in any fashion either checked out or anything else in the local machine
2. Want the developer to work directly on the server
3. Looking for a solution where each developer is not required to install Flex Builder locally and the developer can use Flex Builder that is installed on the server and in his workspace and create/modify build on the server itself
Hope I could make you understand this time ................

• Load flex swf as a child swf

Is there anyway to load a flex (or any swf with AIR capabilties) into a parent swf?

I just found out you can load the flex SWF directly into the swfLoader... I feel very stupid now. Should have tried that a longggg time ago.

• Google map directions don't print with map , preview & final are blank

I recently allowed updates of Firefox and of apple/imac software. Since then, when I try to print out a Google map with driving directions, the map prints, but the driving directions are missing. I am able to see the driving directions on the monitor, but they just don't print out.
Nothing is wrong with my printer, so I know that is not the problem.

Please read this post then provide some details. What printer model? What operating system? How is the printer connected - USB, wired LAN, Wireless LAN, bluetooth? Are there any error messages on the printer or computer screen?

• 4.6 strange display problem

You can see in the image above that the display of the game is offsetted by some amount vertically. The white section is not supposed to be there. In fact the blue is meant to be flush with the bottom of the screen.
This happened by making two changes to a previously perfectly working project: change the SDK to the new 4.6 Flex release candidate including 3.2 air player with support for Stage3d. The other change is in the Air Application Descriptor file: changed the xmlns to end in number 3.2 instead of 2.6. Nothing else has changed. In fact, if I revert to the 4.5.1 SDK, the graphics show as expected.
I have looked for a couple of hours for a solution, but I haven't found anything...
OS: mac
IDE: Flash Builder 4.6 trial
Device: the Flash Builder device simulator, but also seen on a real device
Application settings: fullscreen, landscape, renderMode=direct/gpu (same thing), size: 1024x600
Stage alignment: TOP_LEFT
Stage scaling: none
Project type: Mobile ActionScript
As I said, just the fact of changing to 4.6 introduced the problem and I can toggle it at will be reverting to 4.5.1, so the code hasn't changed. I can add that the white section in the graphic is actually a repeat of the last row of pixels (bleed basically) all the way to the bottom of the screen. With other graphics, that section changes - so not always white.
Thanks for any tips

I received a tip that setting the fullscreen app variable in the application descriptor file to 'false' instead of the normal 'true' for a game will solve the problem while you are developing on the desktop. It works. Thanks Matt.

• Stage.scaleMode = StageScaleMode.EXACT_FIT

Hey all... first time posting here, long time lurker. I have a problem with a personal project (home automation) that I have yet to figure out a solution. In essence, I cannot get stageScaleMode EXACT_FIT to work as I would hope. There is just something about the way the stage is handled in Flex that I'm missing. I have searched for a solution to this issue for hours and hours around the web, with very little help being provided. This project has just been in my free time and I have actually gotten so frustrated a number of times at this problem, that it has caused me to give up work on it for a while, however I'm motivated once again to try.
In a nutshell, I have developed a Flex application with a set width and height. What I need is for the application to zoom (scale or whatever) to fit whatever container it is in, allowing distortion to occur, and scaling all components, fonts, images, etc accordingly.
I have tried a number of methods and the only method I have found that works the way I want is to use the Flash debug player, load a wrapper SWF (stub essentially) I created in Flash, which in turns loads the built Flex SWF. Doing that, I can resize the flash player window or even go full screen and the flex app scales to always fit the container... buttons, fonts, everything scales. Essentially, the application looks exactly the same at 640x480 and at 1024x768 (albeit smoother fonts, etc). Understand that this is different that how one would probably develop a Flex app, where the actual UI components expand/contract... I want them to stay the same size, same number of rows, etc... just get bigger... fonts and all.
Loading just the Flex SWF in the debug player without the wrapper, however, doesn't work. I can get it to stick to the defined width and height or sometimes get it to scale to an (unknown) stage size, where all that is visible is essentially the top left quarter of the app and resizing the window does cause the app to scale, however only pretty much that 1/4 of the app is visible in the window. Loading the app directly in a browser (through a page) or even through the stub wrapper SWF provides the same screwy results. It's almost as if the Flex app has no idea what the size of the actual container it is in, unless it is in the debug player. Publishing it as an AIR app does the same thing.
Using the Flash debug player, along with the wrapper, actually gets the job somewhat done for my little project's purposes, however I am really at the point where I need to move this is into either a full on AIR install or be able to run this in the browser (either case scaled correctly), so that I may do other things (launch new windows, possibly interact with the desktop, etc).
I apologize I'm not a Flex/Flash developer for my day job, so I'm not using the correct terminology (however I am a programmer), but I hope my description of what is occurring will suffice. I've seen others online with a similar problem and have heard mentions of using some form of scalex/scaley to accomplish a solution, but couldn't find any actual examples of working code.
Any help would sincerly be appreciated. I would like to finally get past this, so I can go back to having fun working on the actual parts of the application (and not just getting it to fit the dang screen)... haha.
Thanks.

Thanks for that pointer. I tried playing with finding the (what I would call) "natural" size of the app, as you describe. When laying out the UI, I always set the viewer to 800x600. I removed the app's width/height, added some trace statements and here was the output (stageWidth is stage.stageWidth & "width" is stage.width):
stageWidth = 500
stageHeight = 375
width = 548
height = 596
If I set the app's width/height to 548x596, this somewhat worked, however it caused proportions on individual components to be off (of course they would scale with these off proportions).
So that got me thinking. The app has a viewStack as it's main "base", which was defined having width/height = 100%. I changed that to an absolute width/height of 800x600. Without setting an app width/height and running, I then got:
stageWidth = 500
stageHeight = 375
width = 800
height = 600
So, naturally then I changed the apps width/height to 800x600 and wholla! Works/scales (all by itself with no wrapper) in both the debug player and the browser just fine and looks the way I intended. Neato! Trace gives me:
stageWidth = 800
stageHeight = 600
width = 800
height = 600
Now, getting the same job done in AIR is a different story. I immediately went to my AIR project and tried, but it still suffers from the same (~1/4 corner of the app) showing up, albeit it tries to scale up with the window resize. My guess is there is something different with the timing/order of the stage/display elements here, as the code itself (other than it's a windowedApplication") is exactly the same. Without any app width/height (but setting the viewStack width/height to 800x600), the trace gives me:
stageWidth = 500
stageHeight = 375
width = 800.5
height = 600
Now, here is what is strange with the AIR app and what may lead someone that knows this better to tell me how to fix it. I am setting the stage.scaleMode using the reference from that base viewstack I described earlier. When I run the AIR App and resize the window smaller, what looks to be the actual app scales down to the point where it actually is smaller than the window it is contained in (albeit still only showing about 1/4 corner of the actual application). There are borders (padding/blank space) on the right/bottom (I also set stageAlign top left). Scaling the window larger and larger, just scales that corner that is visible larger and larger (similar to what the browser version was doing), but actually fulls the window with this 1/4 corner of the app. I know I am missing a "gotcha" about AIR somewhere here.

• Parsed HTML/SSI not working in Web Server 7 on Ubuntu Server 9.10

Please help. I have SJSWS 7.0u6 on Ubuntu Server 9.10. The HTML parsing is set to parse all HTML files.
My HTML code is:

I added the echo command later to rule out an error with my include file. I even took out the include command to rule it out completely. If I "view/page source" from firefox I allways get the code as it is above in its origonal form. The server is completely ignoring the include and the echo.
In the virtual server settings under content handling / Parsed HTML/SSI I have tried "all HTML" and "executable HTML". Both return the same result, which is no parsing whatsoever. The log is set to "finest" and so far no errors have come up. Please tell me what I am doing wrong, did I miss a step, overlook some extra settings?
I am happy to provide more detail. Just let me know what you need to see.
Thank you.
update: I tested another bare bones html and got the same results, no parsing.

• V8.2.1: generic file i/o error while loading VI's

Hello,
I had a large LV application open and running fine. I closed it, and upon re-opening the top-level VI it gives "Generic File I/O Error" on several sub-VI's (belonging to me, not LV). Opening those sub VI's individually reveals no problem at all, and in any case the whole code base lives in a Subversion repository and I have tried checking out a fresh copy of the whole source code tree and the problem re-appeared. Before Labview displays the "File I/O error" it will hang for several minutes with no disk or CPU activity.
I just tried checking out a fresh copy of the source tree on a separate computer. Now Labview is hanging while loading "<vilib>:\DAQmx\create\channels.llb\DAQmx Create Channel (CI-GPS Timestamp).vi" after having managed to load 920 VI's. On edit: I spoke too soon. It is now duplicating the "Generic File I/O Error" on one of my sub VI's.
If anyone has any clue to this strange behavior please let me know.
Thank you,
-Brian

What I found was this...
My code calls a bunch of subVI's in another directory. Those subVI's in turn had some unwise paths saved in some of them that loaded other subVI's from a network shared drive instead of the local disk directory.
The network shared drive had been taken off line since the computer was delivered to a customer last Friday. When LV tried to load the VI's from the shared drive, it would hang for about 5 minutes, then give the "Generic File I/O Error" with an "Ok" button to continue. I eventually sat and did this for about 13 VI's, taking most of an hour while waiting for the network reads to timeout.
Once my now-broken application loaded I was able to successfully re-direct the missing VI's to the local disk, resolving the problem.
The "Generic File I/O Error" message could not be less useful in this case and I'm rather irritated by the genericity of the message. Something like "Network read failed" would have immediately illustrated the problem and kept me from wasting a whole lot of time deciphering it.

• Multiple axes chart - baseline issue

Hi all,
I'm currently working on charts (column, bar, line, ..) with
multiple axes (each for one series).
If negative amount values are shown in a chart, the baselines
(for zero values) appears
on different coordinates/levels.
As an example see the code listed below:

<mx:Application xmlns:mx="
http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml">
<mx:Script>

import mx.collections.ArrayCollection;
[Bindable]
public var expenses:ArrayCollection = new ArrayCollection([
{Month:"Jan", Profit:2000, Expenses:15},
{Month:"Feb", Profit:1000, Expenses:20},
{Month:"Mar", Profit:1500, Expenses:50},
{Month:"Apr", Profit:100, Expenses:-10}

</mx:Script>
<mx:Panel title="Column Chart">
<mx:ColumnChart id="myChart" dataProvider="{expenses}"
showDataTips="true">
<mx:horizontalAxis>
<mx:CategoryAxis dataProvider="{expenses}"
categoryField="Month"/>
</mx:horizontalAxis>
<mx:series>
<mx:ColumnSeries xField="Month" yField="Profit"
displayName="Profit">
<mx:verticalAxis>
<mx:LinearAxis id="v1"/>
</mx:verticalAxis>
</mx:ColumnSeries>
<mx:ColumnSeries xField="Month" yField="Expenses"
displayName="Expenses">
<mx:verticalAxis>
<mx:LinearAxis id="v2"/>
</mx:verticalAxis>
</mx:ColumnSeries>
</mx:series>
<mx:verticalAxisRenderers>
<mx:AxisRenderer placement="left" axis="{v1}"/>
<mx:AxisRenderer placement="right" axis="{v2}"/>
</mx:verticalAxisRenderers>
</mx:ColumnChart>
<mx:Legend dataProvider="{myChart}"/>
</mx:Panel>
</mx:Application>
I'm using Flex Builder 3.0.2 /Flex SDK 3.2.
Is this is a bug in flex?
Am i missing something in the mxml/as, or is there a solution
or workaround?
Any hints are highly appreciated.
Regards,
Matthias

The series both work fine on their own, of course, but when
you mix in a series with a negative value, it causes the "floating
columns" because the zero-points on the axes don't line up with
each other.
My suspicion is that this is expected behavior. This would
work with other column chart types (like stacked), as long as you
set allowNegativeForStacked to true (there's an example here:
http://livedocs.adobe.com/flex/3/html/help.html?content=charts_displayingdata_11.html).
But since you want clustered columns, it might be a problem.
If you think it is a bug, you can file one here:
