IdeaPad A1, what does Airplane Mode really do?

Hello-
Got my A1 in yesterday, charged it up and turned it on. First impressions, positive. Nice cosmetics, decent responsiveness. A bit nonintutive in the human interface department. It got on my password-protected wireless LAN just fine, it seemed. And web browsing was OK, fits and starts. I went to update the firmware, and I noticed the pattern: every 30 seconds or so, the WLAN link indicator would blink out, of course interrupting the firnware download. But (good engineering at work), the download resumed when the link came back up. It took about 75 repeats, but the new firmware eventually made it down the airlink to the A1. Only one of the promised two update files was delivered; this was apparently enough to upgrade from version 9 to 10. I really hoped that the upgrade would solve the airlink instability problem. It did not. I will consult Lenovo support and see what happens.
In pondering the reasons for the airlink problem, I explored the A1 menus a bit. And came away confused. When I checked my battery usage, over half of my power was consumed by something called "Cell Standby". Whaaat? Do I have a SIM-equipped IdeaPad? [No, at least no SIM slot is apparent]. Maybe "Airplane Mode" would help. But Airplane Mode "turns off all wireless connections". That should kill WiFi, maybe even the satellite receivers. Except it didn't. WiFi worked just fine in Airplane Mode (OK, at least as well as it did in non-Airplane Mode). And the map app got the satellites and located me perfectly well in Airplane Mode, once I took the IdeaPad outside.
So what exact part of wireless functionality is disabled in Airplane Mode, if any?
Thanks for any advice here.

When you put it in Airplane mode it turns off both bluetooth and wifi. While Airplane mode is on you can still turn on both BT and wifi but if you power off the tablet both radios will be off the next time you power up. So it appears that Airplane mode prevents inadvertant use of wireless when powering on. Note that the radios remain on in standby mode. There may be more to it as these are just my observations from use.

  • Adobe Photoshop cs4-What Does Canvas Size Really Mean?

What are we actually looking at when we place a picture on a canvas?
For example, if I have a canvas of a width of 800 and a height of 1500 it appears on the screen to my eyes to be about 3 inches by 7 inches.
Then let's say I add the headline: Risk takers of all kinds think the same.
This headline will possibly take three rows to complete itself.
But then I can make the same canvas fit the screen.
Now the entire headline will fit on one row.
What confuses me is which image of the canvas is a "what-you-see-is-what-you-get" in terms of how it will actually look on my webpage?
In other words I guess my real question is how do I start with a canvas size that actually reflects my webpage or a defineable portion of it.
    Thank You,
    Jerry

You'll have to forgive me but at times I'm not really sure what I'm talking about or doing.
But an image or other content is built on layer canvas' I think?
It gets all confusing because you may or may not fill a canvas with an image?
Assuming you do fill a canvas with an image then I think the pixel dimensions and resolution will be directly tied to the canvas size?
But I don't think any of that is my real point.
I'll try to speak to my confusion using words other than those I first used.
For example let's say you are making a squeeze page for your website.
So you start with a headline that reads as follows: INTERNET MARKETER STICKS TO HIS GUM!
Let's say those words are in large print.
On my computer and I am using a small screen, if I create a canvas of a width =800 and height=1500 it occupies a space of
    of about 3" by 7".
Now (and this part is now becoming like what I wrote above) those six words in large letters will occupy three to four rows on my computer.
So in my mind I am thinking that when I eventually publish that page that the headline should occupy four lines. Make sense?
But if I click the "fit to screen" Photoshop button, the canvas becomes larger on my screen and the entire headline will now fit on a "single" line.
So now in my mind I am thinking that when I eventually publish that page that the headline should occupy one line.  See my problem?
I guess my point is am I looking at WYSIWYG in the first, second or neither case?
In other words what is the meaning of what I see when I look at a canvas?
    Thank you for your help.
    Here's one more attempt.
Let's say you spend 12 hours designing a canvas in Photoshop that you thought would properly fill your webpage, and then you discover to your dismay that instead of your headline fitting properly only 37% of it does.  This would make you very unhappy and perhaps others.
So what I'm trying to understand as a beginner is how does what I see on a canvas in Photoshop cs4 relate to a webpage.

  • What does "Locked" status really mean in FPGA Timekeeper

The help says, "FPGA Timekeeper locked is TRUE if the FPGA Timekeeper has locked on to and is tracking the given time reference."
    That's not very specific.
    - The Timekeeper is only "tracking the given time reference" when "Sync Time.vi" is called by the code, right?  Otherwise isn't it just predicting time base on the FPGA clock cycle, and apparently some filtering, gain and interpolation?  That wouldn't really be tracking the time reference.
    - Is the Timekeeper checking the interval at which Sync Time.vi is called?
    - Is it comparing the offset of the two time values input to Sync Time.vi  to its internal prediction?
    - Is it making some judgement after a series of Sync Time.vi calls (how many?) that it has figured out the relative variations between the time reference and the FPGA clock?  How does it make that judgement?
    - If a long time passes between Sync Time.vi calls does it decide it has lost its lock?
    - Does calling Time Synce too frequently or too infrequently contribute to not achieving locked status, or to losing it?
Thanks for the help!  I love the idea of the FPGA Timekeeper but I don't know how to interpret the lock.  I can get the offset from the time reference, but what I'd really love to know is the size of the error when calling Time Synce.vi.

  • What does syncing mail really mean?

I've just started using ISync with my .mac account, telling it to copy the sync-able data (Calendar, Safari Bookmarks, Mail, etc.) from my MacBook Pro to my .mac account. The goal is to then have my old Powerbook synced and getting its data from that same .mac account -- thus, changes I make on the MacBook Pro should always be reflected on the Powerbook. So far that's working fine with Calendar; all appointments listed on the MacBook now show up on the Powerbook as well. But the mail app doesn't seem to work in the same way -- email recently sent or received on several POP accounts I set up on the MacBook Pro does not show up on the Powerbook after syncing, even though the mailbox accounts are the same on both computers. It seems like if ISync can sync individual appointments, it ought to be able to sync individual emails -- or am I misunderstanding what syncing in the mail app really means? Is it only good for syncing settings (so a new POP account set up on one computer would presumably show up on the other one as well?) I'm also wondering if syncing works differently depending on whether the accounts are POP, IMAP or .Mac?

You haven't started using iSync with .Mac, you're using *.Mac Sync* for which a specific Discussion forum is here:

  • SSL: Peer reports it experienced an internal error.; what does this error really mean?

I have an internal site with the following basic setup:
    Apache Tomcat 2.0.29
    Running Hudson
Tomcat is configured to allow HTTPS connections from internal users. The certificate used is signed by my own CA. It is important to note that the certificate is a wildcard cert, so any host at my domain will match.
I am trying to access this site using both Firefox 3.6.7 and Chrome 6.x. Both browsers are configured to trust any certificate signed by my CA.
If Tomcat is running without Hudson deployed, then the site works fine over SSL in both Firefox and Chrome. Once Hudson is deployed to the site, then Firefox starts to display the following error:
    Secure Connection Failed
An error occurred during a connection to site.example.com:8443.
Peer reports it experienced an internal error.
    (Error code: ssl_error_internal_error_alert)
Chrome does not display such and error and the site is still fully functional.
Its interesting to note, that this same setup (Tomcat configuration) can be used with other applications and Firefox works fine. Some examples are JIRA, Artifactory, etc. Its only Hudson that triggers this issue. Chrome 6.x works in a cases.
Can someone explain what the error message above means? Is it possible there is a configuration error that Chrome is ignoring? Or is it more likely Hudson is doing something that is triggering a bug in Firefox?
I would guess this is not a common problem as I was unable to find the error message above on the support.mozilla.com site.
The site I'm using is internal, but if needed, I can setup an instance in the same configuration that is externally available.

More information. I noticed a message in Chrome that stated TLS was not used and that the connection was using SSLv3.
Based on this information, under 'Advanced -> Encryption', I unchecked 'Use TLS 1.0'.
After making this change, I was able to use Firefox to browse the site just fine (using SSL 3.0).

  • What does disk utility really do ?

I downloaded a lion 10.8 dmg from internet and wanted to make a installation portable disk.
And when I loaded the dmg, and used the 'disk utility' to restore installation files to one of my disk partitions, it just failed. And what is real annoying is that I got my disk partitions after the partition lost. And I can't get my important files back.
Maybe the 'disk utility' want to change the partition to be bootable and made the partition tables damaged.
Hope someone can help me to repair the disk and make the disk utility more secure !

    varjak paw wrote:
There is no DMG of Lion, at least not anything legal. From where did you get this file?
Well there is a DMG of both Lion and Mt Lion. But it is included in the Lion/Mt Lion OS X Install.app package files and can be copied out.
But that is Not the Operating System. It is the Install files for the operating system. Restoring that DMG would, supposedly, give you bootable media for installing the OS on a drive.
To the OP I have found that the Restore feature/function in Disk Utility doesn't always work as expected. Best thing to do is use this program for creating a Dual Layer DVD or USB thumb of the Mt Lion install files. It works every time.
Make the USB thumb as most of the, Not So, Superdrives can't really write to Dual Layer DVDs. You will be very lucky if you have a Superdrive that will actually write to Dual Layer DVDs.

  • What does a MAC really need to do justice to FCE and FCEHD?

I need to purchase a new laptop. I want to use it to prepare 45 min documentaries. The original video will have audio filmed with it. I will want to add more narration, music, more photos, ie. the works. I have been using iPhoto and find that video containing audio and background noise, plus added narration, photos, and background music limits me to 20-30 min DVDs before stuttering occurs. What hardware do I need to do a professional job?
G4 Dual 1 GHz BUS 133 MHz using an external hard drive for iMovie   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   all software updates
G4 Dual   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   all software updates

    Hi(Bonjour)!
A laptop is not for professionnal video editing in a regular basis ( at least in your home editing room).
If you need absolutely the portability, that's Okay, but keep in mind that Hard Drives of laptop are slower than one in desktop machine. An external Hard Drive is recommended.
A desktop machine is less fragile, has more connectors on it and is generally faster that the "laptop" little brother (in a head to head comparaison at the same introducing date, the laptop are one generation behind ).
A desktop machine can be easily upgraded and the parts are less expensive.
A good mic is a must to catch good voice overs.

  • What does Toolkit.setDynamicLayout() really do?

    Toolkit.setDynamicLayout()
    this method acts strangely.
    setDynamicLayout(true)
Has no effect on the frame the frame still has flicking it does not repaint until mouse is released. but from the API it says If true, Containers should validate their components as the Container is being resized. If false, the layout will be validated after resizing is finished. but in my case if set to True it has no effect.
but isDynamicLayoutActive( ) returns true that it supported on my platform.

Are you sure that it is not working?

}Note: These should be run separately - there is only one Toolkit instance
Run it and try resizing each of the frames. Do the components stretch/shrink as you resize the frame for any of the frames?
If none of them do then it's possible that it is supported always or not at all on your OS and that Toolkit.getDesktopProperty("awt.dynamicLayoutSupported") is just returning misleading results.

  • IPod Classic - 80GB - What does Recovery Mode mean?

Every time I connect my new iPod Classic to my computer I get the message "iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode. You must restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes." I've restored the iPod several times and no luck. I welcome advice. Thank you.

I may have found the answer to my question in another thread.

  • WHAT DOES IPOD DISABLED REALLY MEAN..

I AM GETTING THIS MESSAGE: IPOD DISABLED, TRY AGAIN IN 6025454 MINUTES? ANY ONE HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS?

It means your/someone entered an incorrect screen-lock passwde too many times. To recover see:

This is also all covered in the iPod Users Guide.

  • Received text message while in airplane mode

I recently flew to South America and put my phone (Samsung SGS3) into airplane mode.  Imagine my surprise when during my flight I received a text message from Verizon, saying "Welcome to Mexico."  And then more info about signing up for a global plan.  How did Verizon know I was crossing over Mexico and how did they send me a text message?  Isn't airplane mode suppposed to turn off all radios?  Wifi was not on either.  I was on American, which does have wifi, but my wifi was turned off.  Or does airplane mode not really turn everything off?

The show SMS preview option off with a passcode lock enabled is for when your iPhone is locked.
If unlocked and being used, the assumption is it will be you that is using your iPhone, and I don't have anyone looking over my shoulder when I'm using my iPhone.
Before allowing someone else to handle or use your iPhone, turn on Airplane mode so that no SMS or calls can be recieved when someone else is using your iPhone. If internet access is required when someone else is using your iPhone and there is an available wi-fi network that you have access to, you can turn on wi-fi access with Airplane mode enabled. This won't prevent someone else that you allow to use your iPhone from reading your SMS or email, but if I discovered someone I allowed to use my iPhone perusing through my SMS or email without my knowledge or permission, that would be the last time they would use my iPhone for any reason.

  • Listening to music & Airplane Mode

    Hello All~
I have a ?? for you that I hope you can answer! I have had the Iphone for a few days now~ When I put my phone in my Ihome under the cabinet speaker I get this message that says "This accessory is not made to work with this phone would you like to put the phone on Airplane mode to reduce interference"
And when I do play it, I do get interference, like a buzzing sound. Same thing happens to me when I attempt to play it in my car with my belkin car kit thingy....Anyhow~ I guess two questions are in order!! ONE~ What is airplane mode? And TWO~ If i put it in Airplane Mode will it make the playback have none of that buzzing sounds? Please help~ I thought that this Iphone was compatible with most Ipod speakers. WILL I DAMAGE THE IPHONE if I do use it in my car or with the Ihome speaker? Thanks~

    Annietullo wrote:
I went to the AT&T store yesterday for a new sim card and the gentleman there told me that the Iphone would work with any Ipod speaker. So am I getting false information?
Yes and no. While it does work with some iPod devices it does not work with all of them. It will of course work with any speaker you connect to with a 3.5mm jack.
Will putting the phone on airplane mode help with the interference?
Yes. Airplane mode cuts all incoming and outgoing transmitions from the iPhone so it will not generate interference. It will, however, also prevent it from receiveing telephone calls or emails.
It all has to do with the shielding of the speakers. If your speakers are properly shielded then the iPhone will not interfere with them much, if any. My Bose SoundDock is well shielded so interference is minimal. Most consumer speakers, however, are not shielded all that well. Interference may be a problem with them.

  • What DB roles are REALLY needed by the applications?

During our upgrade, the security / database guys at my office want me to lockdown the db accounts for portal, publisher, collab, anaytics, etc (also services, notification, security...all the alui related databases). They say that dbo is too privileged and I need to figure out just what the applications need and give them access.
My question is...what does each account REALLY need? Some accounts create tables (analytics). Is it sufficient for those accounts to just be given CREATE TABLE privileges? Can every other account just be given normal CRUD access?

    fair enough.
Ali, where did you find the SQL scripts for Collab? Is it someplace I can view easily?
One comment would be that of course it would be fine for these accounts to have DBO during upgrades, etc, if that is the only time when these 'creating views, indexes, and SP's' are used...

  • Duel Band what does it do and worth it?

I am looking around to get an Airport Extreme.
I am looking at getting one because i read that it solves the WPA security dropout problem with the Macbooks, is this correct? So i can have WPA rather than WEP without any problems?
There seems to be a few around.
    Airport Extreme
    Airport Extreme Duel Band
    Airport Extreme Time Capsule
Airport Extreme Time Capsule Duel Band
The Duel band on average can add upto £60 ($99) onto the price.
So is it worth it, what does it do really i am wondering?
Currently i have a cable modem (not ASDL) and have 2 macs running off it wirelessly, 1 ethernet connected and 1 pc laptop.
Also will the duel band really add anything, will it make my wireless as quick as being connected by ethernet for example?
    Many thanks

    Here are my thoughts:
    *1) "WPA dropout"*
I have not heard of this but did a quick brush up on it. I don't know about this personally because I always use WPA2. I have an array of Apple wireless devices on my network and have not had any problems with dropout.
It may be an easy solution to switch your wireless network to WPA2 (or WPA2 Personal in AirPort Utility) and then reconnect your wireless devices using WPA2. This may solve your 'dropout' issue.
As far as "wireless security" goes, the order of security increases as you go from WEP to WPA to WPA2. Personally, I use WPA2 for all my wireless devices along with a long password and you should too unless you have a device (or devices) that can't use it. Unless any of the computers you listed are pretty old, they should all support WPA2.
    *2) "Dual Band"*
The answer to this question relies on your answer to these two questions:
    1) Do any of your devices work on "Wireless N" or 802.11n wireless networking?
    2) Do you have any devices that only work on 'wireless g' or 802.11g?
If your answer is 'no' to the first question, then there is no reason for you to spend the extra money to get a dual band router. If all your devices only work on 'wireless g', then save the money and keep the single band router you have now as there would be no benefit to you if you purchased a dual band router when you could only use one band.
If, however, you answered 'yes' to the first question and 'no' to the second, then you have what some call a 'mixed network'. This means you have wireless devices that work on both frequencies (wireless g & wireless n). In that case, you would benefit from a 'dual band' wireless router like the Apple products you mention. Whether the extra cost is worth it to you is a question only you can answer.
    Here's the difference:
The networking world is ruled by negotiating a connection. When any connection is negotiated, the two sides tell the other what their fastest speed is. They then agree to use their highest common speed.
If you have a single band router, it can only create one network. So any device trying to connect at a higher speed (like ‘wireless n’) will have to switch down to the highest speed of the wireless network before it can connect.
Having a dual band router is great because each frequency (wireless g & wireless n) have their very own networks. A dual band router can create two separate networks. One network for ‘g’ devices and one for ‘n’ devices. This allows all devices involved to connect at their best possible speed.
    +Real world example:+
I have two AirPort Express' and an iPod touch. The Express' can work on either 'wireless g' or 'wireless n' but my iPod can only work on 'wireless g'
I had the previous generation AirPort Extreme base station which is a single band router so I had a 'wireless g' network running. I had it streaming music to the Express' and used my iPod to control iTunes all over the same 'wireless g' network. This bogged things down as streaming takes up a lot of bandwidth. This made using my iPod to control iTunes sluggish. The commands from the iPod had to wade through all the streaming traffic and that slowed things down.
With the new Dual Band AirPort Extreme, I now have two separate networks running, a 'g' and an 'n' network. This allows me to move the streaming traffic to the 'n' network so it will work better and frees up the 'g' network for iTunes control via the iPod and other devices.
Assuming any of your devices can use 'wireless n', you would benefit from a speed boost using the wireless network and accessing the internet as wireless n is faster than wireless g.
    *3) Wireless vs Ethernet*
Ethernet is faster. I don't know of any real world situation where a wireless connection is faster than Ethernet. If you want more technical numbers on this you can read the section titled 'Wireless vs Ethernet (qualified)' at the end of this reply.
    *4) Extreme vs Time Machine*
Only get the Time Machine's if you want to use the Time Machine feature of Mac OS X 10.5.x (Leopard). Your PC won't be able to use the drive for anything and any Mac's without 10.5.x installed won't be able to use it either. This choice alone can save you $100.00 or more.
    =====
    Wireless vs Ethernet (qualified)
The most common implementation of Ethernet in computers today is the 10/100/1000Base-T set of standards. the 10, 100 and 1000 actually refer to the speed achieved with each. 10 is actually 10Mps, 100 is 100Mps and 1000 is 1000Mps (also known as Gigabit Ethernet). Most computers created in this millennium support the 100 or 1000 speeds which means that those computers can run at either 100Mps or 1000Mps when connected with an appropriate Ethernet cable.
By the numbers, 'wireless g' and 'wireless n' are both faster than Ethernet 10 (10Mps) but as most computers can run at the faster speeds, Ethernet is always faster.
Let's compare theoretical maximum speeds (as no network speed given as a numbers is the exact speed you'll get when actually using it):
    802.11g (wireless g) = 54Mps
    802.11n (wireless n) = 70Mps
    100Base-T Ethernet = 100Mps
    1000Base-T Ethernet = 1000Mps
