Ideapad S12 Via chipset

Hello everyone,
I just bought a used Ideapad s12 with the Via CPU.
Model number is 20021
Last owner had a bios password that he couldn't recall so I'm stuck here.
Already tried two solutions to reset the bios that I knew but neither worked
(1st remove battery and power adapter then opening the case and removing the CMOS battery for about 2 hours,
2nd remove battery and power adapter and press power on button for thirty seconds. After this, starting the system while pressing fn and F2)
Anyone knows any other way?I would really appreciate it
I contacted IT support of Lenovo here in Greece and their respond was to change the hole motherboard !OMG!
One second question
The CPU clock isn't steady. It varies from GHz to GHz  and unlikely most of the time is at 0.8 causing the system to hang and CPU to work at 100% when doing basic tasks like browsing.
Is this normal? Is there any way to change this?
Thank you very much in advance and sorry for the long message

Hi try to answer a few of your quests...
1. BT there is no manual to explore the S12... but a good help is this how to get inside...S12 HDD Upgrade
but be aware ...you definitely lose your warranty ...
2. Thats mission impossible memory soldered onboard ....means soldered ... not socket based...
3. One free minicpi-express slot ... ok ...dont know if it works ... but even when ... you have 3 GB memory ...
turbo memory works only for Vista ... and its a waste of money... nothing will speeds up ...
4. 7200rpm HDD will only transfer data faster...higher battery consumption eats overall 5-10 minutes... so no fear about that..    loose against SSD but they are more expensive 10-20 times  per GB... 160 GB SSD costs equal the whole S12  .... bad ratio ... could be better next year but didnt have a magic glass sphere
5. No graphics acceleration ..
6. Depends on the Windows 7 driver for your Via machine...
not really easy to compare XP with W7 but much more efficent than Vista...
hope that makes something more clear ...
sincerely KalvinKlein

  • Solution to rfkill wireless problems w/ IdeaPad S12

I'm a new owner of a Via-based IdeaPad S12, and I've had some trouble getting the included Broadcom BCM4312 802.11 adapter to work in Linux.
I'm running Debian Lenny, and I have tried the latest stable kernel (linux-image-2.6.26-2-686 version 2.6.26-21lenny4) and the latest kernel from backports.org (linux-image-2.6.32-bpo.3-686 version 2.6.32-9~bpo50+1).  I've tried the b43 driver (with firmware from package b43-fwcutter 1:011-5), the proprietary Broadcom "wl" driver, and ndiswrapper with the XP drivers that Lenovo makes available for download at http://consumersupport.lenovo.com/.
With b43, I'd get this from the kernel (either upon "ip link set eth-wlan up", or "iwlist scan", or starting wpasupplicant--I don't remember which):
    b43 ssb0:0: firmware: requesting b43/ucode15.fw
    b43 ssb0:0: firmware: requesting b43/lp0initvals15.fw
    b43 ssb0:0: firmware: requesting b43/lp0bsinitvals15.fw
    b43-phy0: Loading firmware version 410.2160 (2007-05-26 15:32:10)
b43-pci-bridge 0000:02:00.0: PCI: Disallowing DAC for device
b43-phy0: DMA mask fallback from 64-bit to 32-bit
b43-phy0: Radio hardware status changed to DISABLED
b43-phy0: Radio turned on by software
b43-phy0: The hardware RF-kill button still turns the radio physically off. Press the button to turn it on.
ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth-wlan: link is not ready
And with b43, "rfkill list" would indicate that the radio was enabled in software but disabled in hardware.  "wl" and ndiswrapper would fail similarly (but without indicating that the problem had anything to do with a kill switch).  I've tried flipping the hardware killswitch and pressing Fn+F5 in all cases (F5 has a wireless icon on it).
As a last resort to verify that the wireless or kill switch wasn't broken at the hardware level, I restored my backup of Windows and tried wireless in Windows.  It only worked after hitting Fn+F5 and enabling wireless in the dialog box that Lenovo Energy Management pops up.  After doing this, the wireless works great under Linux with the b43 driver.
I hope this helps some other frustrated Linux IdeaPad owners.  I've spent at least a good 16-24 hours on this issue.
If you don't have Windows installed anymore, and don't have a backup, then install Windows again, and download the WLAN driver and Lenovo Energy Management from http://consumersupport.lenovo.com/, in order to enable wireless on your unit.  And get in touch with Lenovo, politely encouraging them to have their engineers to work with the b43 developers to make sure that Linux wireless works out of the box as it does for Windows.

  • Intel based IdeaPad S12 BIOS

    Hi,
I saw there is a BIOS update for a VIA based S12, that enables 3Gb RAM support. Does the Intel based S12 theoretically support more than 2 Gb of RAM, and are there any plans for releasing the BIOS update for it?
    Thanks

    Go to Solution.

This page show an Intel IdeaPad S12 with 3Gb of RAM that can be bought directly from Lenovo.
    http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/LenovoPortal/en_US/catalog.workflow:category.det...
Do you have to buy specifically that model to get 3Gb of RAM or can you buy one with 2Gb and upgrade it? There is no model with 3Gb of ram available in Canada.
    Thanks!

  • What's the Part Number for an IdeaPad S12 recovery disk?

    Hello,
I have an IdeaPad S12 (NVidia Ion). The recovery partition is gone. What's the part number for the recovery disk?
I mainly work with ThinkPad systems and Lenovo has an excellent part number system that covers just about every part you could imagine on a ThinkPad laptop. I assume Lenovo is also using this or something similar for it's consumer-line laptops. Sadly, Lenovo doesn't treat it's consumer laptop line with the same dignity as the ThinkPad line, and no customer support agent would tell me the part number, so I'm resorting to the forum for finding it.
    Please help.

    Hi and welcome,
the ideapad as consumer-line has no part list ....as the thinkpads have...
    regards KalvinKlein

  • Which LCD cable for Lenovo IdeaPad S12 (Series: 2959)

    Hi!
I have a Lenovo IdeaPad S12 for three years now... and I am generally really happy with it
Since a few weeks, however, my display is not working properly anymore. Depending on the angle, certain colors change their appearance (white colours flicker blue-ish and dark colors show red-ish flickers). I have already stopped by a Laptop repair shop and the guy said that I need a new LCD cable and the hardware should be ok.
Does anybody know which exact cable I need? I have found three different cables on offer:
    50.4CI11.001
    50.4CI11.002
    50.4CI12.001
Is it possible to say only with my series number (2959) which of the three I need?

  • Ideapad S12: Get WWAN started with Dell 5530 Card

    Hello there,
I bought an ideapad S12 (Intel Atom 1,6 GHZ, NVidia ION 256 MB, 2 GB RAM). So far so good until I detect that indeed there is a sim card slot, but no internal wwwan card built in. Didn't matter anyway, the kind lady at the lenovo hotline told me, that I have to buy the Ericsson f3507g-Card.
I thought to be very clever and bought me the identical Dell 5530 WWAN card at only a fraction of the price. After hours and hours reading installation advices in several forums I was able to install the dell drivers onto my netbook and after deactivating the pin query on my sim card, the card is also detected by the data manager from my provider (3datamanager at www.drei.at).
And (finally) here comes my question: are there additional antennas for WWAN in the netbook? If no, I likely have to buy an antenna and screw it into my (yet) maiden netbook ;-) Has anyone experience with assembling WWAN antennas in S12-netbooks? Which model should I use and where should I put it?
    Thanks in advance

  • NEW VIA Chipset 4in1 Drivers for KT4AV BAD

Ok heres the problem. I have a KT4AV-L motherboard and I wanted to update the VIA Chipset 4in1 Drivers. While I was installing it and when it reached 100%, the screen went black and wouldn't boot back up. I had to hit the restart button to reboot Windows again. Doesn't anyone also have this problem with the new VIA Chipset 4in1 Drivers V4.51 on the KT4AV motherboard?

I haven't heard of this, but I know if not installing under Safe Mode the driver install often hang at the last percent.

  • Spotify won't run on my IdeaPad S12

    Hi!
A few months ago, I bought myself the Lenovo IdeaPad S12 and I am very satisfied with this netbook.
However, I'm not able to run Spotify on this computer.
I replaced Windows XP with Ubuntu Netbook Remix (first, I tried with Ubuntu 9.10, but it wouldn't run as smooth as I thought it would do....), and I installed Wine and thereafter I installed Spotify. When I had Ubuntu 9.10 running, it worked for a few days, before Spotify collapsed. On Ubuntu NR it won't play music at all. That said: It will play for a few seconds, but it's not possible to hear that this actually is music, it's just noise.....
When I try later on I get the message: "There is a problem with your soundcard. Spotify can't play music".
I've tried to get the sound to work with Wine Config, and I do get a sound when I press "Test Sound", but Spotify is as useless as it were before I started Wine Config.
Can anyone help?? I'm getting a bit frustrated.....

Never mind, I finally got it to work.... I accidently restarted my computer - and then it worked.....

  • Km2m shuts down during boot after running via chipset driver install

Ive recently purchased a new computer with a km2m Combo mobo and am having trouble getting it properly configured and running.
I attempted to run the "One Touch Setup" on the drivers and utilities CD that was supplied with the system. Reeceived a message to first install the VIA Chipset drivers. I ran the chipset driver install and simply clicked NEXT on all the screens accepting the default options. The install appears to complete successfully and restarts the pc.
during restart the pc abruptly powers off!
I can reboot the system in safe mode.
I've run msconfig and disbabled everything and the system still powers of during a normal boot.
If I restore the registy (scanreg /restore) the system again boots properly.
What causes this anomaly and how do I resolve it? Is there some sort of hardware incompatibility? I'm stumped!!!
    AMD XP 2400+ 266FSB
    OS = Windows Me
    PSU = +3.3/28a +5/40a +12/18a -12/1.0a -5/1.0a +5SB/3.0a
    what other info is needed?

Yes, problem with the video card sounds plausible! Any not so successful updates recently? It is sometimes to make a good uninstall, which is required to make a good install.
4in1 drivers should - esp. with W98 and ME - be installed while in SafeMode and with all autostarting programs disabled, for example Antivirus and utilities.
Else, since you have a damaged regedit, I would reinstall Windows. You might have done something for example an upgrade or new install the registry, not healthy, has made a note of. Some utilities also overwrite and change system files without good results.

  • Hang after added 2GB ram into S12 (VIA Nano version)

    Hi
My S12 (VIA Nano version) came with original 1GB ram, and I have added the additional 2GB into my S12 (Total 3GB ram), the 3GB ram can be recognized in BIOS but it's running very slow and hang in the windows login screen.
I have asked Lenovo's customer service (Hong Kong) and they said that the S12 (VIA Nano version) can support up to total 3GB ram but I wonder that this is true.
Can anyone help me to confirm it and solve my problem?
Does anyone have the same situation? Thanks!

My Via Nano S12 is having the same hanging issue after installing a 2 GB Kingston stick from NewEgg. At times it freezes when logging into a user account, other times it freezes within 4-5 minutes of use.
I'm running memtest on it at the moment fearing bad RAM. I'll give this BIOS update a shot after having read this thread. Anyone else have any luck getting this resolved?
