Ideapad s400 battery

Is it possible to upgrade to a bigger battery?

Hi whatever125,
Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
I think the Battery that were released for this model has minimum and maximum of 32Wh,4Cell.
and no higher battery is available as replacement or upgrade.
What I would Suggest is to use a Passmark Batterymon so you can check the discharge rate of the laptop.
and with that you can disable some Non Microsoft and thridparty services and Startup Programs.
This will minimize the background application running in your system and see the Discharge rate lower together with remaining battery runtime gets higher.
Best Regards

  • Ideapad S400 Battery Problem

    Hi all ,
4 days back i bought a Lenovo S400 Ideapad with i3 processor(2nd gen), I am really concern about the battery back up its giving , currently its giving 1.5 - 2 hrs . any solution guys .
In Flipkart they have quoted 5 hrs as battery back up , so its a bit of concern that so early it should not give this poor backup .
    hoping for a reply .
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    hi Ranjan07,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
On Lenovo sites it also says 5hrs battery life, but this is an idle mode which means no application running and minimal brightness.
Windows is calculating your remaining battery hours of usage by checking your current  discharge rate vs. The remaining charge.
You can use Passmark Batterymon to check the discharge rate, high discharge rate is caused applications / Background applications / services and power settings like brightness and wireless/Bluetooth.
On my lab PC here, discharge rate is around 15884mW so If we have the same discharge rate and battery charge of full 32000mW It will only last for about 2hrs.
My system is running on Windows 8 and I tried looking around seemed that there are steps to lower down the discharge rate by adjusting some settings like this on this Post
    http://www.friedbeef.com/top-15-ways-to-extend-your-laptop-battery-life/
You can also fully charge your battery and see if the full charge will count as 32000mW, If it is nowhere cose to that then that definitely is a defective battery.
But still if the computer is already on minimal usage lower power settings, still your getting 1.5 to 2 hours,
You can always contact Lenovo Technical support for assistance.

  • Ideapad S400 battery charge until 60% and stop charging, on Linux

Got the same issue that windows users had but, I can solve the same way cuz I did Install Linux on my s400, is there anything that  can do under linux?

    Hi Yasumitsu,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
I’m sorry to hear that your S400 Laptop is charging only upto 60%, this issue in windows will get resolved by install the LEM (Lenovo Energy Management) and by choosing the (Optimized Battery Health), the Battery charges only to 60% and stops charging the battery and then it take its power from the charger, so if you want to charge the battery to 100%, you need to choose (Maximum Battery Life).
Do post us back if the issue still persists.

  • Lenovo ideapad S400, battery not charging when plugged in

Hi, I had the problem where the battery didn't charge at all even if it was connected in the right way and the charger was plugged in. So I started to search internet for possible solutions. Those I found where to 1) disable alt uninstall ac and acpi adapter in Windows Device Manager. Restart computer.. Not charging problem is related to some Windows issue. 2) Choose the alternative "maximum battery life" in Lenovo Energy management.. Neither worked after several and time consuming tries... The problem here is Lenovos "smart" Energy management system that prevents the computer from charging the battery to "save it".. Solution: Uninstall Energy Management (Publisher: Lenovo) under Program and Features in Windows Control Panel and the problem is solved.. And don't reinstall this **bleep**ty program again....

I should note that this unit is pretty new: purchased in august 2012.

  • Ideapad s400 touch bios or other hidden power management while on battery? or battery just weak?

    Hi,
I have problems with performance when unplugging my ideapad s400 touch, and it does not seem to be related to windows or intel graphics power settings.
Example, while plugged in with full battery (not charging), I can play Skyrim at 600x800 with 28-30 fps (all shadows turned off and with reduced textures, in case you are wondering how that is possible)
But when I unplug, or the computer is charging, the game will be only barely playable at  480x640 with 18-26 fps (besides res. of course same settings).
In both cases, the intel graphics options and in the Lenovo Energy Management is set to the high/max performance settings.
So I am wondering if there are some hidden Bios power management or some other hidden power management going on, when it is unplugged or charging?
Or if simply the battery can not deliver the same juice as when it is plugged in?
    Thanks for any help,
    L

    hi x8lars,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
Can you try changing the power plan on your system to a High Performance Settings,
Also check the Advanced power settings and make sure that the Maximum  Processor start and minimum are set the same with the Plugged in.
    Let me know your settings,
    Cheers!

  • Ideapad S400 - what am I losing if I choose Core i3 (Sandy) vs. i5 (Ivy)

    Hi everyone,
I'm getting a new Ideapad S400 as a backup PC and my options are restricted to the Core i3 (Sandy Bridge 2375M) and Core i5 (Ivy Bridge 3317U) models. Right now Core i3 is a lot cheaper than i5 in my market (about $150 less).
Question is, am I losing much by going for cheap?
Specifically, would an Ivy Bridge i5 processor bring better battery life or *much* improved performance over the previous-generation i3? I know the S400 is notorious for its low batt life.
As for getting the cheap option and upgrading it, I already have a Samsung 840 SSD and 8GB of RAM waiting for the laptop here, so either model would get the same upgrades.
Thanks in advance for your insights!

    hi livino,
    Regarding your concerns:
    1. With the custom upgrade you have in mind and If you'll be using the Ideapad S400 for basic use (i.e. Stream music/videos, play flash games, etc.), you really won't notice that much difference between the Intel® Core™ i3-2375M Processor (3M Cache, 1.50 GHz) over the Intel® Core™ i5-3317U Processor (3M Cache, up to 2.60 GHz) unless you'll do heavy multi-tasking or a benchmark test (the i5-3317u has Turbo Boost)
    CPU Benchmarks:
    Intel® Core™ i3-2375M
    Intel® Core™ i5-3317U
    2. The Intel Core i3-2375m and the Intel Core i5-3317u both have a max TDP of 17W so battery life wouldn't be that noticeable but the I5-3317u have a slight edge on performance when both PC run on battery power as it has a higher clock speed and a bit faster integrated graphics
    Integrated Graphics Benchmarks:
    Intel HD 3000
    Intel HD 4000
If you have a tight budget and will just use the laptop for basic use, the Ideapad S400 with an Intel® Core™ i3-2375M will be sufficient for everyday use.

  • Ideapad S400 touchpad jumpy when ethernet cable plugged in

I have an Ideapad S400. Lately when i plug in my ethernet cable(router, switch, different cable, tried everything) the touchpad behaves erratic, but only if i run on battery.

Today i turned on the machine everything seemed ok and proceed to shutdown again, and when I come back 2 hours later I cannot power on the machine there is no indication that theres power in the system nothing boots up no sounds, no leds nothing. I tried changing ac outlets, removing the battery, doing a discharge pressing the power button, and tried using the Onekey Recovery button on the side of the power button. I have no idea what went wrong, im around machines all the time and where this laptop  is I have other computers aside. Im not sure if i need to remove the bios battery or what step should i take.

  • IdeaPad S400 Touch Windows 8 reinstall

Hello to all.  This is my first post on this forum.  I bought a IdeaPad S400 Touch several months ago (October) and one of the first things I did was create a backup image on an external hard drive using the tool in Windows 8.  I then wiped the hard drive completely in order to install Ubuntu.  I was going to put Windows 8 back ont he machine and have the two running side by side.  However, I have not been able to reinstall Windows 8.  I physically took the hard drive out of the laptop and completely erased it using Disk Utility on my Mac, making sure that the disk was reformatted as MS-DOS.  I also created a separate partition, named Lenovo, of 20GB that contains the backup files from my original backup.  Still, using OneKey recovery doesn't work, and I am unable to reisntall Windows 8.  Please , would someone tell me what I am doing wrong and if there is any way to fix this mess I have created?  I will say things were so much easier back in the good old days when PCs shipped with recovery media.  Thanks.

    Hi Robert,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community!
I’m sorry to hear that the OKR (One Key Recovery) is not working as expected in your S400 touch Laptop, let me inform you that once the partition structure HDD (Hard Disk Drive) gets modified the hard disk recovery corrupts, if you have created the recovery media then you can use them and restore the Operating System. Please try running OneKey Recovery from hard disk, power off the laptop then press Novo button instead of pressing power button and check if it works and if OKR does not work. I suggest you to contact our Technical Support Team to get the details of the nearest Authorized Service Center to get the issue analyzed.

  • Windows 10 drivers ideapad s400

  • Hyper-V on Ideapad S400

Hi. Has anyone succeeded in enabling Hyper-V on Ideapad S400 under Win 8 64 ? It all seems to be okay, the MachineSLATStatusCheck says it is a SLAT capable machine, coreinfo -v says Hypervisor is present, VMX and EPT are supported, in Control Panel>System Security>System>Advanced System Settings>System Properties>Advanced>Performance>Settings says "Your computer’s processor supports hardware-based DEP", but the Hyper-V item does not appear as a Windows resource to activate. I installed the Windows Phone 8 SDK, and in the end it greeted me with "Hardware virtualization is disabled on this PC. You must enable it through the BIOS settings. For more information, see MSDN article at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=252010" and also with "Failed to add current user to Hyper-V administrators group.". I took a good look at the BIOS options, but the only one which seems to relate is "Intel Virtual Tecnology -Vanderpool technology", that I suppose is the Intel VT-d and is recommended to be disabled. Anyone ?

Keep in mind that Hyper-V isn't available in the base Windows 8 or 8.1.  Pro is required.

  • Ideapad S400 Brightness Problem

I'm having a problem with a Lenovo Ideapad S400 Laptop on Linux. The brightness in any linux distribution is very low in comparison with windows 8 brightness.
Some people also had the same problem when downgrading from windows 8 to windows 7. See:
    https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/IdeaPad-S-series-Netbooks/s405-s400-screen-brightness-issue-after-downg...
According to lenovo support, the problem is that brightness settings have 101 steps on windows 8 and only 16 steps on windows 7. See this picture to compare:
    http://support.lenovo.com/en_MY/research/hints-or-tips/detail.page?DocID=HT076504
Is there a specific solution to this problem on linux? For example, a procedure to force the brightness, a kernel module, a solution to a similar problem in another laptop, etc.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Hi, this problem was corrected on kernel 3.8.3 by the kernel developers! I'm happy to say that many lenovo laptops now work in linux. Unfortunatly, not in windows 7 yet.
    Instructions on ubuntu:
    -go to http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/
    -folder kernel 3.8.3
    -in our case, download linux headers...amd64, linux-headers...all-amd64, linux-img...amd64, linux-image-extra....amd64
    -open the terminal
    -sudo dpkg -i *.deb
    -reboot and enjoy
PS: Intel has release a new driver for INTEL HD Graphics that works smoothly with ubuntu and it is easy to install.
    instructions on ubuntu:
    -go to https://01.org/linuxgraphics/
-the rest is easy to follow
i hope this will work also on other laptops and linux distributions
