IdeaPad S405 Questions

I recently bought the IdeaPad S405 with an AMD A6 processor, and have a couple questions about it.
1. I have seen the Lenovo Quick Start technology touted online and even in the manual for my computer, but it doesn't seem to work, and I have not found any information or software about it. What's up with it?
2. I have read in a few places that it has an extra mSATA slot. Does that allow me to install an SSD alongside the HDD, or can I only insert an SSD if I remove the HDD?
3. I know that in the official documentation it says that the S405 is limited to 4GB of RAM, but is that official or just a way to prevent people from trying to upgrade it? There are a few single-card 8GB RAMs that would fit inside, but I'm reluctant to try it. Has anyone successfully done it, and if not, what is preventing it from happening? It's surely not software, as it ships with 64-bit Windows.
Thanks for your help!

Hi WindyCityRockr,
I have a S400, but I think it will be the same... I've spoken with a guy who made RAM upgrade (from 4 to 8 gb) and he told me that his S400 support 8gb; in addition he also mountend a SSD in the m-sata slot, keeping the HDD in its place.
Hope to be helpfull.

  • Ideapad S405 Touch Sensitive Mouse Buttons

    Hi
I have recently bought an Ideapad S405.
I have noticed that the area for left and right mouse buttons is also touch sensitive.
Because of it the mouse moves a bit whenever I press the left or the right mouse button.
This is quite a bit irritating for me.
    Any solutions ??
    Regards
    Hitesh

    Hi Hitesh,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community!
I’m sorry to hear that the touchpad buttons are sensitive and move the cursor while the buttons are pressed. Hence, I would suggest you to change the settings of “Edge Motion Region” to resolve this issue. To perform this, please perform till the 3rd step from the below link and then click on Pointer Motion> Edge Motion Region>Then set the region so that it will not affect the touchpad buttons. Please let me know the findings:
    How to access Touchpad Settings?
Do post us back if the issue persists.
    Best Regards

  • Ideapad S405 Windows 8 and OneKey NOVO Recovery Failure

I finished working on research at the cafe this afternoon on my Lenovo Ideapad 604, came home, powered up and it is stuck in this 'Windows 8 Recovery Loop' non-sense. Turn it on, automatic recovery starts, diagnoses, fails to start windows, asks to recover or shut down, click through the Windows recovery troubleshooting menus to get to the advanced options button in order to try to boot in safemode.
This is where things get messy. On troubleshoot menu (refresh, rest, advanced options screen) if you click any of these buttons the windows recovery program freezes solid. Attempts to use the NOVO button land you indefinitely on a blank blue screen. I'm guessing the hard drive has bad sectors (explaining the freezing recovery screen) and needs to be replaced.
I've owned this laptop for less than 6 months and have no complaints. This is the first 'issue' I've ran into. I'll call support/service and let everyone know how it goes.
    Options:
    1) Call service. They send me a magic box and fix it at Lenovo (happened in the past with my Y510 keyboard).
    2) Someone out there knows a trick to fix this issue.
    3) Nuke Windows 8 and NOVO. I have WIndows 7 pro 64bit that can be loaded onto a USB.

    hi Firefly2462,
    Thanks for Posting,
Since the issue is kind of in the middle of a Hardware(HDD) and Software (Windows Corrupted) Issue.
i would suggest to have the system repaired by Lenovo.
Definitely they would test the HDD in their repair center,
It is understandable that the Windows OS sometimes may fail or get corrupted but together with the Onekey recovery Partition to fail? Something might be wrong with the HDD where Both are saved,
You can try doing a test on the HDD on your own before sending the machine for repair,
If the HDD test result showed up OK then you can just ask for a disk To reinstall Windows since the OKR is not working I believe they would send you one.
If the HDD Tested bad then have it repaired and have the HDD replaced.
Regarding your Windows 7 OS you will need to have your Own Product Key for Windows 7 as the one used for your windows 8 will not be compatible.
Its fine to use your own OS like Windows 7 just make sure that the HDD is good maybe do a test after installing windows 7, also take note that some portion of your warranty may be voided by changing your Windows version.

  • Lenovo ideapad s405

My ideapad s405 is not booting up. I have tried removing battery and disconnecting power cord, holding down power button for 10 seconds and reconnecting just the power cord. This does not work, only a Lenovo name is showing on display, this has been like this for 24+ hours so far without any change.

    DW,
I've replied on some of your other threads - we'll try to make further suggestions here, but you may also want to contact service.  I think you indicate it just fell out of warranty.  We can look into the situation and see what can be done.
So, the system is hung on the Lenovo screen every time you start up correct?
If you press F1 can you get into BIOS?
Can you press F12 to get a boot device list?  If so, is the HDD shown?   If the boot device list comes up, then maybe the system board is OK and if the HDD is not shown, then perhaps that is the problem.  If you can't get the list, then maybe a probably with the system board.
I would also check your USB ports to see if any are broken.   On some ThinkPads, if a port was broken and the plastic rectangular piece was broken out of it, the 4 pins left could wind up shorting out which would cause a hung on ThinkPad screen.
Let us know the outcome and perhaps the community can help you figure this out.
    Best regards,

    hi Razorbacktrack,
Your issue might be similar to this thread.
If your PC came with a Synaptics Touchpad, can you try to:
    1. Go to the Control Panel (large icon view) then > click Mouse > Device Settings tab > Settings
    2. Under the Synaptics Settings, go to Pointing > Sensitivity > Palmcheck and set the palm sensitivity to minimum and test the game.
    Spoiler (Highlight to read)
If you have an ELAN touchpad, try to:
    3. Adjust the PalmTracking option under Additional Tab on the ELAN Smart Pad settings to the minimum (see spoiler)
4.If same problem, press WindowsKey+R then type appwiz.cpl. From the program list, uninstall lenovo pointing device, reboot.the PC and test (you can re-install this later by nagvigating to D:\Drivers\Touchpad).

  • Ideapad s405 screen brightness issue on win8

I read about issues after downgrading to windows7, i have the same issue with light control on windows 8, what is the solution to that problem?

    hi attilakk,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
The Issue is "Only high and low option for Brightness" This only show under WIndows 7 and can be fix by reverting to Windows 8.
You said you have WIndows 8, can you share if the same is happening or what exactly is happening in your system.
    Thanks

  • IdeaPad Touchpad Responding Incorrectly

I usually have the two-finger scrolling enabled on my Lenovo Ideapad S405. Today, however, my laptop decided that it would recognize single finger gestures as two-finger scrolling. Normal movements with the touchpad are near impossible as the mouse becomes "jumpy" and then begins to scroll the page.  When I try to use two-finger scrolling as normal, nothing happens.
When two-finger scrolling is disabled, this no longer occurs. However, I have become accustomed to two-finger scrolling and find it very annoying to have to scroll manually by dragging the scrollbar. When I have my mouse plugged in, there is no issue. Honestly, I just want a fix for this so that I'm able to use my laptop and scroll with ease without always needing to bring a mouse. I reinstalled all the most recent drivers, but nothing seems to work. I have also restarted my laptop several times but to no avail.
If anyone can find a way to fix this, it would be very appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I am looking forward to an answer on this matter!

  • S405 Wireless Connectivity Issue. Help Please?

Hi, I recently purchased an Ideapad S405 and I'm having some WiFi connectivity problems.
Specifically, my laptop has trouble connecting to one wireless spot. I have no problems connecting to my router at home, school, and other places, however I can never connect to my friend's router. This isn't such a big deal because it is just one access point, but its rather frustrating since my friend's place is incidentally my favorite study spot.
When I attempt to connect to this router, it always says that it has limited connectivity. When I try to diagnose or troubleshoot the problem it usually tells me something about default gateway not available or problem with wireless adapter or access point. I've tried setting the router to open access with no password but it doesnt make any difference. I also updated the wireless driver but it still doesn't work.
If anyone has an idea on how to fix this or if anyone knows of a workaround, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
    Additional Details:
    Laptop - Lenovo S405
    Windows 8 64 bit
    AMD A6-4455M Processor
The modem/router I'm trying to connect to is an ARRIS TG862 provided by comcast.

    Hi,
I've had the same issues and sometimes keep having them with my router at home and no it isn't the router either. It is Lenovo's horrible DRIVERS that are the problem.
I had this issue from the begining and then it got fixed with latest drivers found here
    http://support.lenovo.com/en_IN/downloads/detail.page?&DocID=DS032605
Note - if u cannot see the drivers, select ur model S405 and then go ahead.
But I cannot fully guarantee that it will work. As I still face the issue off and ON. And to make matters verse, their latest video drivers for Win8.1 suck even MORE. Been having video crashes left right and center and I cannot change brightness either! Lenovo doesn't respond, Lenovo ur software support SUCKS!!!
Check out my resolution video problem here.

  • S405 in other colors?

I want to purchase the Lenovo S405 (A8-4555M version) from Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-59342927-S405-14-0-Inch-Laptop/dp/B009AEPHH8 but it only comes in silver. I've seen pictures of the S405 in a very striking red, and I'm curious if this option is actually available. I don't see the S405 listed anywhere on the Lenovo website. This computer is entirely MIA.
Here is a pic of the S405 in red: http://www.theverge.com/products/ideapad-s405/6046 Ooooh. Pretty.

  • Windows 8 Recovery Discs

I have called Lenovo for Recovery Discs to be shipped to me since I have none to fix my laptop which came pre-installed with Windows 8. THEY verified my serial number to make sure it was still under warranty. I told the rep I had Windows 8 to make sure to send the right ones and she seemed to disregard my comment and immediately said Oh these are.for the G780 yes. But never asked if I had a 32 or 64 bit OS. Does this matter as they pull all my computers info.via.the serial.or.do.I need to call back to make sure they send the right ones?

    Here, what I found:
    On Lenovo Assisted Search: http://sw.nohold.net/Lenovo/Uploads/LenovoVirtualAgent.html
    click on: Idea...it opens page: http://www5.nohold.net/Lenovo/Loginr.aspx?pid=4&login=1 :
Lenovo:Welcome to Lenovo’s Assisted Search. It is designed to answer many IdeaPad related questions...
There's a link, 4th from the bottom: You want help with system recovery...if you click on that one, you would get:
http://www5.nohold.net/Lenovo/Loginr.aspx?pid=4&login=1 : You:You want help with system recovery,
then, click: You want help getting started with the total recovery process, gets you on page:
Lenovo:To start the total recovery process, follow the steps below:
Insert Start Recovery Disc labeled with number 1....
You'll see picture of Lenovo Restore Disc 1 and screenshots of recovery...
Just to get those discs, I was told, I have to pay $59.99
In other words, if something happens with HDD or you want to replace new HDD, you have to go and buy OS...Preinstalled Win8 Recovery on new HDD DOES NOT WORK - it's all over The Net....
Tech support is trying to convince, that you did something wrong while creating USB Recovery Drive....

  • Question about IO Ports on A2109 IdeaPad

    Hello Everyone:
In a couple of months I'm going to be getting a IdeaPad A2109 Tablet.
I couldn't find manuals for it on Lenovo's site so I came here and found the links that I needed Thanks to those forum poster{s}.
I ran accross in those links the maintance manual and was excited because I couldn't find anything about any of the connections on the tablet.
And any pictures that Lenovo had on their site while good in general didn't in anyway help really in identifying any of the ports.
I tried to the best of my ability to figure them out, But in any event I digrise...
I seen in the manual that it said the Micro usb port was used for Sync to your computer and charging.
OK I figured I can hook my Mini usb Keyboard to that with NP because I already had found out that you could also cahrge the tablet off your computer using one of it's usb ports.
And it also said it has a DC JACK?
Which I took as ity having a seperate connection for normal powering from the cahrging of the Micro usb port.
But yet the diagram gives No Indication of a seperate DC Jack?
My question is this does the IdeaPad A2109 have a Seperate place to plug in your "NORMAL POWER CORD"???
Or is the Micro usb port used for the "NORMAL POWERING" of the Tablet as well???
I really hope that the DC Jack is seperate from the Micro usb port so that I can still hook the odd thing to it while still being hooked to AC....
If not could anyone tell me how I could use it for both at the sametime?
Also let me take the chance to Thank the poster that answered a thread about where the Micro SD Card went, or I would've been pulling my hair out trying to find it...
I take it that the Max Size SD Card is 32gb?
Sorry for all the questions just trying to know all that I can before I buy my new Tablet.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Some angled adapters will block the HDMI port. This is not a problem for most things but if you plan on keeping your device plugged into power, keyboard etc.... You will not be able to access the mini HDMI.

  • Ideapad V570 Warranty Question

    Hey guys,
Recently (8 hours ago) called up Lenovo and requested that they send me a replacement HDD. Since it was still under manufacturer's warranty it'd be no cost, but they had to take my credit card information in case I chose not to return the old HDD within 30 days.
Went into my online account tonight to transfer some money into savings and saw a large sum missing ($145.13). It was from Lenovo. I was never told I'd be charged for anything, and this seems like an odd amount for a hold. Regardless, if there was going to be a hold on the account, they should've told me.
Is this normal, or did someone at Lenovo drop the ball on this and charge me when they weren't supposed to? Seems about the right price for a 640GB Western Digital HDD.
    Thanks.
