Ideapad U110 and Intel VT

Hi there,
In order to test some virtual machines features, I need to enable the Intel VT instructions out of the CPU.
However, what a surprise to see there is no way to enable such CPU feature through the bios of the Ideapad U110...
Do you know if we can upgrade the bios or do anything to recover such option?
Thanks in advance.
Regards.
Eric

Hi,
actually, Virtualization Technology should be automatically enabled by default if it is supported by the processor.  And here comes the crucial point:

  • Ideapad flex 15, windows 8.1 and Intel applications

I just got a new ideapad flex 15. I began updating everying and removing the bloat-ware. After installing 8.1 I noticed that all of the intel experience applications crashed immedatly when ran. Of coarse, phone support charges for answering this issue (even when telling me specifcally "we have the answer if you will pay for preimum support"... thanks....).
Does anyone know of issues with 8.1 and intel, or the Flex 15 and intel?
    Thanks for any help.

Sorry for double-post, as I saw your update after I replied.
Confirmed the issue with Intel EC. Same as you described.
Here is the driver update to get the Intel EC drivers for Windows 8.1: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=23355
Windows 8.1, although a progressive update, is more like the transition from Vista -> 7. There are a lot of functionality changes that the old drivers don't work with in 8.1. Once we have all your issues resolved, I'll post a list of drivers to the support team to see if we can get an 8.1 patch issued.

  • Ideapad U110 - External DVD Player not working with Windows 7

I did a windows 7 upgrade on my U110 and now the external DVD drive will not function. The computer recognizes that a DVD driver is plugged in (in an explorer folder) but Windows 7 doesn't register the DVD when I plug it in and the computer cannot read the DVDs. It seems to be trying as there is noise emanating from the DVD drive and the light is blinking but no end result.
I've search high and low for a solution but non seem to exist. Lenovo support has no driver replacement. Their rep suggested reinstalling the Intel chipset for Vista which I've done and that didn't fix anything. Is there a solution out there? Has anyone else encountered this problem?
Oh and my internal microphone doesn't work either. I assume a related issue.
    Many thanks for any help.
    Alec

Here's one out of nowhere:  do you have CD/DVD software that includes Sonic DLA or something like it?  I've seen that take over drives and prevent normal operation.
If you right click on the drive and hit properties, are there any suspicious looking tabs?
Total WAG, and about 1% likely, but there you go.

  • Apple Releases Security Update 2006-004 (PowerPC and Intel)

    From Macfixit................
Apple has released Security Update 2006-004 for Mac OS X in both PowerPC and Intel versions. This update requires Mac OS X 10.4.7 for either PowerPC or Intel, Mac OS X 10.3.9 or Mac OS X 10.3.9 Server.
This is the fourth major standalone security update for Mac OS X released this year.
Update procedure recommendation First, avoid performing any other operations (in Mac OS X or third-party applications) while the update process is occurring. In addition, before installing this security update, make sure all Apple-installed applications and utilities are in their original locations. Moving one of these applications to a different location on your hard drive can lead to an incomplete update. Also, disconnect any FireWire/USB devices before applying the update (except for your startup drive, if it is FireWire or USB, and your keyboard/mouse), then re-connect the devices one by one (checking for issues created by any particular device) after the update process is complete and the system has restarted.
    Enhancements in this release
Of most interest to general end-users:
a fix that prevents maliciously crafted Zip archives from causing condition where arbitrary code can be execute. In other words, prior to Security Update 2006-004 you could download a specially crafted file ending in .zip from a Web site or other location, and it could trigger the execution of malicious code.
a fix that disallows maliciously crafted Canon RAW images from creating a buffer overflow, potentially leading to arbitrary code execution. Prior to Security Update 2006-004, you could download or otherwise receive a Canon RAW file that could allow execution of malicious code on your system.
similar to the above, a fix that prevents maliciously crafted GIF images from causing an integer overflow, potentially leading to arbitrary code execution.
new download validation that will catch certain HTML files defined by Safari as "safe" that may actually contain malicious JavaScript code. After applying Security Update 2006-004, these files will not be automatically opened.
Protection against maliciously crafted HTML documents that can also open the door for arbitrary code execution by accessing deallocated objects.
A full list of enhancements is as follows:
    AFP Server
An issue in the AFP server allows search results to include files and folders for which the user performing the search has no access. This may lead to information disclosure if the names themselves are sensitive information. If the permissions of the items allow it, the contents may also be accessible. This update addresses the issue in Mac OS X v10.3.9 by ensuring that search results only include items for which the user is authorized. For Mac OS X v10.4 systems, the issue was addressed in Mac OS X v10.4.7. Available for: Mac OS X v10.3.9, Mac OS X Server v10.3.9:
The AFP server contains an integer overflow that can be triggered by an authenticated user. A malicious user with access to the AFP server may be able to cause a denial of service attack or arbitrary code execution with system privileges. The AFP server is not enabled by default on Mac OS X. This update addresses the issue by performing additional validation. Credit to Dino Dai Zovi of Matasano Security for reporting this issue. Available for: Mac OS X v10.3.9, Mac OS X Server v10.3.9, Mac OS X v10.4.7, Mac OS X Server v10.4.7.
On Mac OS X Server, the AFP server supports reconnection of file sharing sessions after a network outage. The storage of reconnect keys is world-readable. It may be possible for an authenticated local user to read the reconnect keys, use them to impersonate another user over AFP, and access files or folders with the privileges of the impersonated user. This update addresses the issue by protecting the reconnect keys with appropriate file system permissions. This issue only affects Mac OS X Server. Available for: Mac OS X Server v10.3.9, Mac OS X Server v10.4.7.
An unchecked error condition exists in the AFP server that may lead to a crash. By carefully crafting an invalid AFP request, an attacker may be able to trigger this condition and cause a denial of service. This update addresses the issue by handling the formerly unchecked error condition. Available for: Mac OS X v10.3.9, Mac OS X Server v10.3.9, Mac OS X v10.4.7, Mac OS X Server v10.4.7
    Bluetooth
The security of the Bluetooth Setup Assistant has been improved in this update for Mac OS X v10.4.7. The length of the automatically generated passkey used for pairing has been increased from six characters to eight characters. Available for: Mac OS X v10.4.7, Mac OS X Server v10.4.7
    Bom
An issue in Bom's compression state handling may cause heap corruption. By carefully crafting a corrupt Zip archive and persuading a victim to open it, an attacker may be able to trigger this condition which could lead to an application crash or arbitrary code execution. Note that Safari will automatically open archives when "Open `safe' files after downloading" is enabled. This update addresses the issue by properly handling such malformed Zip archives. Credit to Tom Ferris of Security-Protocols.com for reporting this issue. Available for: Mac OS X v10.3.9, Mac OS X Server v10.3.9, Mac OS X v10.4.7, Mac OS X Server v10.4.7.
    DHCP
A stack buffer overflow exists in bootpd's request processing. By carefully crafting a malicious BOOTP request, a remote attacker may be able to trigger the overflow and cause arbitrary code execution with the privileges of the system. Note that bootpd is not enabled by default in Mac OS X, and must be manually configured in order to be enabled. This update addresses the issue by performing additional bounds checking. Available for: Mac OS X v10.3.9, Mac OS X Server v10.3.9, Mac OS X v10.4.7, Mac OS X Server v10.4.7.
    dyld
Malicious local system users may specify dynamic linker options that cause output to standard error. This output contains informational content and potentially user-specified content. As a result, privileged applications that parse or reuse standard error may be influenced inappropriately. This update addresses the issue by ignoring the problematic dynamic linker options in privileged applications. Credit to Neil Archibald of Suresec LTD for reporting this issue. Available for: Mac OS X v10.3.9, Mac OS X Server v10.3.9, Mac OS X v10.4.7, Mac OS X Server v10.4.7.
An improperly handled condition in the dynamic linker may lead to including dangerous paths when searching for libraries to load into privileged applications. As a result, malicious local users may cause the dynamic linker to load and execute arbitrary code with elevated privileges. This update addresses the issue by properly selecting search paths when executing privileged applications. Credit to Neil Archibald of Suresec LTD for reporting this issue. Available for: Mac OS X v10.4.7, Mac OS X Server v10.4.7
    fetchmail
Several issues in the fetchmail utility were discovered. The most serious issue could lead to arbitrary code execution when fetching mail from a malicious POP3 mail server. All issues are described at the fetchmail website (fetchmail.berlios.de). This update addresses the issues by updating fetchmail to version 6.3.4. In addition, fetchmail is no longer distributed as a privileged utility. Available for: Mac OS X v10.3.9, Mac OS X Server v10.3.9, Mac OS X v10.4.7, Mac OS X Server v10.4.7.
    gunzip
A race condition may allow a malicious local user to modify the permissions of files owned by another user executing gunzip. This issue is only exploitable when executing gunzip on files in directories that are modifiable by other users. This update addresses the issue by properly handling files while decompressing. Available for: Mac OS X v10.3.9, Mac OS X Server v10.3.9, Mac OS X v10.4.7, Mac OS X Server v10.4.7.
A directory traversal vulnerability is present in the command line utility gunzip when it is used with the non-default "-N" option. By carefully crafting a malicious compressed file and persuading a user to open it with "gunzip -N", an attacker may replace or create arbitrary files with the privileges of the victim. This update addresses the issue by properly stripping paths from files when decompressing. Available for: Mac OS X v10.3.9, Mac OS X Server v10.3.9, Mac OS X v10.4.7, Mac OS X Server v10.4.7
    Image RAW
By carefully crafting a corrupt Canon RAW image, an attacker can trigger a buffer overflow which may lead to an application crash or arbitrary code execution. This update addresses the issue by performing additional validation of Canon RAW images. This issue does not affect systems prior to Mac OS X v10.4. Available for: Mac OS X v10.4.7, Mac OS X Server v10.4.7.
    ImageIO
By carefully crafting a corrupt Radiance image, an attacker can trigger an integer overflow which may lead to an application crash or arbitrary code execution. This update addresses the issue by performing additional validation of Radiance images. This issue does not affect systems prior to Mac OS X v10.4. Available for: Mac OS X v10.4.7, Mac OS X Server v10.4.7
By carefully crafting a corrupt GIF image, an attacker can trigger an undetected memory allocation failure which may lead to an application crash or arbitrary code execution. This update addresses the issue by performing additional validation of GIF images. This issue does not affect systems prior to Mac OS X v10.4. Available for: Mac OS X v10.4.7, Mac OS X Server v10.4.7.

    LaunchServices
Download Validation may erroneously identify certain files containing HTML as "safe". If such a file is downloaded in Safari and Safari's "Open `safe' files after downloading" option is enabled, the HTML document will automatically be opened from a local URI. This would allow any JavaScript code embedded in the document to bypass access restrictions normally imposed on remote content. This update provides additional checks to identify potentially malicious file types so that they are not automatically opened. This issue does not affect systems prior to Mac OS X v10.4. Available for: Mac OS X v10.4.7, Mac OS X Server v10.4.7
    OpenSSH
Attempting to log in to an OpenSSH server ("Remote Login") using a nonexistent account causes the authentication process to hang. An attacker can exploit this behavior to detect the existence of a particular account. A large number of such attempts may lead to a denial of service. This update addresses the issue by properly handling attempted logins by nonexistent users. This issue does not affect systems prior to Mac OS X v10.4. Credit to Rob Middleton of the Centenary Institute (Sydney, Australia) for reporting this issue. Available for: Mac OS X v10.4.7, Mac OS X Server v10.4.7
    telnet
When connected to a TELNET server, the client may send the contents of arbitrary environment variables to the server if the server requests them. Some environment variables may contain sensitive information that should not be sent over the network. This update addresses the issue by ensuring that only non-sensitive variables and variables that the user has explicitly requested are are shared with the server. Credit to Gael Delalleau and iDEFENSE for reporting this issue. Available for: Mac OS X v10.3.9, Mac OS X Server v10.3.9, Mac OS X v10.4.7, Mac OS X Server v10.4.7.
    WebKit
A maliciously-crafted HTML document could cause a previously deallocated object to be accessed. This may lead to an application crash or arbitrary code execution. This update addresses the issue by properly handling such documents. Credit to Jesse Ruderman of Mozilla Corporation for reporting this issue. Buffer overflows were discovered in TIFF tag handling (CVE-2006-3459, CVE-2006-3465), the TIFF PixarLog decoder (CVE-2006-3461), and the TIFF NeXT RLE decoder (CVE-2006-3462). By carefully crafting a corrupt TIFF image, an attacker can trigger a buffer overflow which may lead to an application crash or arbitrary code execution. This update addresses the issue by performing additional validation of TIFF images. Systems prior to Mac OS X v10.4 are affected only by the TIFF NeXT RLE decoder issue (CVE-2006-3462). I can reboot and it will work, but if I put my macbook to sleep it, when I wake it, it will do the same thing again.
I am also getting timeouts waiting for results of 1st wireless scan to complete in console.

you do not need nearly as many packages on hold. Haven't logged into my 32-bit arch install for a month now, but I've maintained a xorg 1.4 install with this line just fine:
    IgnorePkg = xf86-video-intel xf86-input-evdev xorg-server xorg-apps xorg-xkb-utils xorg-server-utils xorg-utils intel-dri synaptics libgl libdrm xorg-res-utils xf86driproto xf86-input-keyboard xkeyboard-config
That said, I expext to upgrade next time I use it (probably to play around with some fast boot). I would look into troubleshooting with the latest xorg and intel driver as it really should work, if I were you. I presume you have already tried starting x without a xorg.conf as a baseline test with those versions?

Blinking stops when i restart computer.
I have newest xorg and intel drivers (xorg-server 1.7.1.901-2 & xf86-video-intel 2.9.1-1). I tried also downgrade this (and related) packages to older versions (even xorg-server 1.5.* & xf86-video-intel 2.4.*) and the same happens... with only one difference. On that oldest packages I've tried screen doesn't blinks, but the wallpaper of the desktop is changing: my -> default -> my -> default... with the same frequency . I was googling a lot, believe me. I study IT on a University and I asked my friends from there, and they just run out of ideas. In addition i can write that it isn't my laptop fault because windows xp works fine and ubuntu 9.04 (i had before archlinux) also worked good. It has started on ubuntu 9.10, so I thought I move to archlinux, and its still here? I suppose its a problem with intel drivers or xorg, but somehow linked with power management of the monitor(?). But why then older packages don't work? Please, I will be grateful for any help.

  • Can PPC and Intel OS's be on the same hard drive?

I do a lot of work on Apple computers for clients.
I have made it a habit to bring firewire hard drives with OS X installed to my work locations so I can boot peoples' computers from my own, clean OS for numerous troubleshooting purposes.
I was hoping to take a big hard drive I have, partition it into 4 parts, and install 10.4 Intel, 10.4 PPC, 10.5 Intel, and 10.5 PPC.
But after I installed the PPC 10.4, I went to my macbook pro and tried to install 10.5 Intel.....and it wouldn't let me!
So now I am learning about the Apple Partition Map format for a drive versus the GUID format and that basically one is for PPC and the other for Intel.
But I would like to know if there is any way to format a drive in such a way that I can indeed install PPC and Intel version of an OS onto one physical drive in separate partitions???
    anyone?

It's not intuitive but it's possible. You must set up your external drive using the APT partition map. Install the PPC version of OS X on one partition. Now here's the trick: You must install an Intel version of Leopard on a drive that has been partitioned using GPT. Then clone that installed version to another partition the external drive that now has the PPC version of Leopard. You now have a PPC version of Leopard on one partition and in Intel version on the other partition. You will find you can boot an Intel Mac from that partition even though the drive is partitioned APT.
The problem is that Leopard will not allow itself to be installed on an APT partitioned drive. But an Intel version of Leopard will work just fine from an APT partitioned drive.

  • G4 and Intel compatibility

    Hey there!
My new MacBook Pro is the first Mac I've owned. I'm using it for music creation and most of the software has system requirements for a Mac G4 processor. This may be a stupid question but will they run fine with my 2.16GHZ Intel Core Duo processor?
    Thanks!
    - Wil

    Hello Wil,
    And welcome to the Discussions!!
Your Macbook Pro will run G4 software (PPC) just fine. Included in the installation of OS X is a run-time environment called "Rosetta." Rosetta translates PPC code "on the fly" so that it can be run on the new Intel processors.
Obviously, these applications will not run as fast on your MBP as Intel-native software will, but Rosetta does a pretty good job. Depending on the software, it should run about as fast on your MBP as it would on a G4, due to the faster speeds of the Intel processors. These apps take a hit from having to run in Rosetta, but this is balanced by the faster machine.
You don't have to be concerned about whether software is "Universal" (written for both PPC and Intel) or PPC only; OS X will detect which is the case and run it in the appropriate environment, transparently. Just install and launch the software; OS X takes care of the rest.
There are some circumstances, however, where you might need to do a little "tinkering" to get an application to install. Many apps make use of OS X's "Installer" application to install themselves. If this is the case, and the application isn't "Universal," you might get an error message upon trying to install it. Flip4Mac, for example (a Windows Media replacement and "helper" application), uses the OS X "Installer," and it won't want to install itself. No problem; just navigate to the "Installer" application in /Applications/Utilities/, click on the Installer application, press Apple-I to open a "Getinfo" window for it, and click the "Open in Rosetta" button. This will cause the Installer to open in Rosetta, allowing you to install Flip4Mac.
Still using the Flip4Mac example, the same "Open in Rosetta" choice applies for its use. Flip4Mac installs components in Safari so you can view Windows Media files in that browser (like CNN.com video). Under normal circumstances, you will not be able to view these videos in Safari. With Flip4Mac installed, however, you can set Safari to "Open in Rosetta," and the videos work perfectly.
Eventually, all software, plug-ins, components, etc. will be "Universal," and our need to use "work arounds" will diminish and disappear. Since everything will be running natively, and thus much faster, we will all be happier.

What could I do to make it work properly on Solaris 9 on Sparc ?
    Thanks for your help.

You should have no problems if both are using Sun's Java Runtime enviroment. I believe there are some problems with Microsofts implementation of Java, but I don't know exactly what.

  • Can you replace a powermac g5 mbd with and Intel mbd?

Can you replace a powermac g5 mbd with and Intel mbd?

I think you would have to do a lot of work in addition to just replacing the motherboard. Like getting a new power supply for instance as the cables won't match what Apple specs for their designed and built hardware. I think the best you can hope for is to reuse the Aluminum tower case, and that's about it.

If I use the xf86-video-intel driver from extra, the xrandr command to do dual-outputs fails and I get both monitors showing the same desktop (mirrored mode).  I switched to use AUR's xf86-video-intel-git (reading the forums it said this would fix the dual-monitor issue until extra moves to 2.12.0-2) and I do get the dual monitors working propery with the xrandr command, but I'm experiencing wierd effects.  For every unminimized window on the desktop, if I put another window in front, the shadow of the window below stays on top of the window containing the focus.  Hard to explain, so I'll use a photo:
That's what it looks like with xf89-video-intel-git, libdrm-git, dri-git, and anything else git and intel graphics related I can find.  Any ideas what's wrong, or what I would even call this problem so I can look around and see if anyone else is having the same issues?

Ok, I went into the XFCE4 setting manager and opened the "Window Manager Tweaks" module, Under "Compositor" if I disable display compositing the shadowing effect is gone, making the display much more usable (thanks!).  But now compositing does not work.  Guess I'll go report this to XFCE, or is the XFCE compositing manager handled by someone else?

  • Driver for nvidia, ati and intel

    Hi,
I have successfully installed archlinux on a usb drive.
It works on every computer  with ati or intel graphics card but when I know want to install the nvidia driver it complains about a dependencie of the ati and intel one.
So I have the choice between nvdia or intel and ati. Is there a way to make the usb stick work on ati, intel and nvidia?
    Regards

archer42 wrote:How does as example ubuntu solve this issue?
They don't. They use nouveau. You can tell the installer to install the nvidia driver from their "restricted" repository, but you do so at the expense of the intel and ati drivers, just like in Arch.
There's one thing... if you don't care about 3d acceleration, you can simply force-uninstall libgl, intel-dri, ati-dri. Then you can have nvdia, intel and ati at the same time. But 3d accel will only work on nvidia, of course.
Gentoo is (I think) the only one with a full solution - their eselect mechanism. Their mesa and nvidia-drivers ebuilds install GL libs in different places, so they don't conflict. Then eselect switches around some symlinks and plays with the LD_LIBRARY_PATH variable. You still have to manually use eselect ("eselect opengl set nvidia" or "eselect opengl set xorg-x11"), but at least you can have all packages installed at the same time.
