IdeaPad U430 cosmetic issues

I found a used U430 online for only $320 USD, but these are the listed physical problems:
Dent on left palm rest and separation on front and right sides, Scratches and wear on top and bottom covers, Dent and separation on bottom cover, Scratches on LCD bezel and hinge
There are no pictures listed but its from a trusted site. What do you guys think? First of all, it would obviously have no warranty, so Lenovo wouldn't be able to repair it right? If not, do you think it would be fine to Gorilla Glue the separated parts back? I'm not worried about the dents at all, just the separation. Those problems seem kind of major (it says it's fully functional and only cosmetic) but they're knocking off hundreds of dollars for it. Is it worth it?

Good afternoon and welcome to the community.
I think what would concern me most about the machine you describe is: How were the dents and separations caused? To me, it reads more like abuse, vs cosmetic damage.
Just for the sake of comparison, you might wish to browse through the Lenovo Outlet: http://outlet.lenovo.com/outlet_us/laptops/#/?page-index=1 to see if anything matches your feature set requirements and price point.
In my experience, machines listed as "Refurbished" have all appeared as new to my eye. They also come with a one year warranty, I believe.
Hope this helps a bit.

  • Installing Windows 7 on Ideapad U430 Touch

I just recently got a Lenovo Ideapad U430, and I already don't like Windows 8, which came with it. I went to install Win7 x64 Professional today. I did what I usually do whenever I reinstall Windows: I downloaded the ISO from the Microsoft website, I burned it to a usb drive using the official Microsoft tool, and went into BIOS to boot from the flash drive. However, I am unsure about how to go about actually installing it. I ran into some trouble with the partitions, but was able to shrink the Windows 8 partition and create a new 210.9GB one for win7. Unfortunately, when I went to install 7, it said that the partition could not be used since its apparently a GPT styled partition. My dad tried formatting it and some other things, but it never worked. When he looked online, all he could find was issues regarding the USB drive not being UEFI or something; it was confusing.
My main question is whether or not its fully safe to Windows 7 on this machine. That's the main reason wanted to keep Windows 8 on there, in case 7 didn't work. So... would it be ok to fully format the harddrive and install Windows 7 clean on it? I'm mainly concerned about driver compatability and whether or not messing with the partitions will mess up the laptop in some way.

I'm not sure about your partition issue as I'm running 8.1 but you can use the generic Intel drivers for Windows 8.x or Windows 7, depending on the OS version you're running.
    You can find them here:
    http://intel.com/p/en_US/support/detect
Lenovo drivers are old and have bugs that have since been fixed by Intel.

  • Should I upgrade to Windows 8.1 on my Ideapad U430

New to the forum.  Just purchased refurbished Ideapad U430 with Windows 8.  The unit came packaged with a warning slip that all kind of nasty things could happen if I upgrade to Windows 8.1.   I know this was an issue back in 2013.  Is it still an issue today.   Should I not upgrade to 8.1.  If I do, what precautons do I need to take.

    Hi,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
One year after the debut of Windows 8, Windows 8.1 is here. It feels significantly less dramatic, but Microsoft's latest version of its PC operating system has some changes, and some requirements, all its own. Microsoft 8.1 has enhanced basic features such as search, improved built-in apps such as the Mail and Better SkyDrive integration. On top of that, Start button is back, Performance improved, more ways to personalize your PC.
Refer here to understand more on upgrading to windows 8.1.
I would suggest you to have a look at the Knowledgebase created by Mark_lenovo to have a better picture regarding the upgrade.
For installation details and instructions, visit here and choose the topics listed under ThinkPad.
    Hope this helps!
    Best regards,
    Mithun.

  • RAM upgrading Ideapad U430: Battery Removal

    Hi all,
I've had a discussion about this with another user of the forum, who told me he wasn't sure how to unplug the battery inside his U430, so he just drained it by using the laptop, then pressed the power button a few times to discharge capacitors, and then proceeded to change the RAM module without any problem.
I wonder if there's any Lenovo rep who can say if this is an OK procedure and if not can give detailed instructions on how to unplug the battery. From the pictures shown here (http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Lenovo-IdeaPad-U430-Touch-Ultrabook.100623.0.html) I see that the battery is fixed with screws, but I figure it wouldn't be necessary to remove them in order to just unplug it for a moment?
    Any help would be appreciated!

For me I think the procedure you mentioned draining the power from the battery is ok, Just make sure you wear an ESD Strap when you replace the RAM
    Hope this helps

  • IdeaPad U430 Brightness

Hello, I have a Lenovo IdeaPad U430 running Windows 8.1, it's the i7 model with touch and SSD.
I bought this PC to use for school but I am having huge issues with the screen. The brightness is constantly low so I can't really see anything on the screen. I have to be in a dark room to see it perfectly. It's also impossible to watch movies on it.
I have tried to upgrade and downgrade drivers, turned off automatic brightness and tried a few settings in the power settings. No luck. Any ideas on what I can do? this is driving me crazy.

    hi Rivellio,
    Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.
Just to verify, when you try to toggle the brightness up by pressing the brightness key (F12), is the brightness automatically going dim?
If you have the U430 with Intel® HD Graphics 4400 and the graphics is automatically going dim, can you try the following:
    1. Install this Win8 driver
Intel Video Driver for 64-bit Windows
    99.4MB
    2. When finished, check this guide for options on how to disable adaptive brightness.
Let me know how it goes.
    Regards

  • Ideapad U430 Vibrating Problem

I have a Ideapad U430 with an i7 and 4GB of RAM that i purchased in November of 2014. It works flawlessly, aside from one thing: Occasionally, when I shut the lid (I have it set to hibernate when closed), the latop starts vibrating like a smartphone would. This continues until I turn the machine back on. It's happened several times and has me very concerned. Please help!

    Hi Rghertz,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community!
As per the query we understood that you are facing issue with system vibration in your U430 laptop.
Please confirm if the system vibrates while working, if the HDD runs very fast there is a chances of system vibrating, also if there are any obstruction that is affecting the spinning of fan as this might also be the reason for vibrating. Also confirm if there are any beep sound while vibrating.
Hope this helps. Do post back if issue persists!
    Best regards,

  • Apple Formats Hard Drive for Cosmetic Issue

So I sent my Apple Macbook in for service for the well know discoloration problem and the "Geniuses" formated my hard drive! I immediately called them to complain but it seems for some unknown reason they only take complaints in the morning. So called back the following day and I issued the complaint. Surprisingly they actually had a reason as to why my hard drive was formated (it wasn't a good reason but a reason none the less). Basically they said that it was formated because I had a password on it and they could not get into the machine to test, which I told them that the login prompt alone was test enough and then asked why they didn't call for my password before they formatted and they said the person who took the original call should have asked me for that information which I immediately told them I was never asked for that information and that I would have happily given it to them if it avoided formating my hard drive so the representative looked at the audit log for the original call and saw that the tech never asked me for my login information among other things (which was a big mistake on there part) and then I asked again since they saw that the information was missing and that there was a password on the computer why didn't they call me before formating my hard drive (they did after all have all of my contact information), the representative had no answer to this. So I went on to explain how formating people's hard drives for no reason was a bad policy especially when their computer was sent in for a cosmetic reason. Anyway the complaint has been logged and now I may or may not get a call back from Apple. So far no call in five days which is why I figured I would post this, I guess if they don't call I'm pretty much SOL. So a little word of warning to anyone sending a computer to Apple for repair don't put a password on it and backup your files even if it is only a cosmetic issue.

So -- everyone is always saying you should back up
everything, but HOW? Do you all have DVD drives or
external hard disks? Is there another way to do it?
I have my most important documents on a pen drive,
and my photos on a CD, and of course I have my
application CDs, but nothing else. It took me MONTHS
to get all my settings the way I like them and to
download all the freeware I like to use, and I would
have been HORRIFIED if my disk had been reformatted
when my case was exchanged, just HORRIFIED!
So do you all just invest in DVD writers and/or
external hard drives, or just what do you do to keep
it all backed up all the time?
Get an external Drive, you can pickup a 250 gig drive for less than a hundred dollars these days.
To the OP it's a shame that your drive was formatted and it should not have happened. However, this is why people backup their drives so when something unexpected happens, drive corrupt, bad customer service etc. you have all your important data and settings preserved.

  • Ideapad U430 Touch gibt störende Geräusche von sich

    Hallo,

Since you also have the IdeaPad Yoga 2 Pro, can you provide your take between the two, and which one you'd be more likely to go with when more inclined productivity than leisure?
I've ordered the i7 Yoga 2 Pro with 8gb memory, but the similarly-spec'd ThinkPad Yoga aslo caught my eye. I'll be using primarily for software development. I like the lighter weight and slightly larger screen of the Yoga 2 Pro, but I'm not sure what, if anything, I might miss from the ThinkPad Yoga instead. (I'm not interested in the digitizer/pen support.) It looks like there might be slightly longer battery life out of the ThinkPad. Would there be significant differences in performance or in any other area? Thanks.

  • WiDi on IdeaPad U430 touch

    Hello,
I haven't get an answer from the lenovo support yet, but I am interested in the IdeaPad U430 touch and want to know, if there is WirelessDisplay on board.
    Thanx

I have an IdeaPad U430 Touch and I am using WIDi on it. You should make sure you update to Windows 8.1 (if it is not preloaded) and run the Windows update to get the latest graphics and WiFi drivers. I am using it with ActionTec ScreenBeam Pro Wireless Display adapter and the Netgear PTV3000.
The Intel website below has a tool that checks if your system has the latest drivers and updates it:

  • Ideapad U430 Touch - Verarbeitungsmängel - Reparaturdauer nicht tragbar

    Hallo zusammen,

  • IdeaPad U430 unmountable Boot Volume

    My Laptop is not working.
When I turn it on, after Lenovo logo  I see a msg "Your PC ran in to a problem and need to restart...... search online for this error Unmountable Boot Volume."
Then automatically PC go to Auto Repair but after few seconds that msg dissapears.
I selected recovery option but after LEnovo logo nothing come on the screen.
I boot up with usb recovery media then also I can not see anything on the screen after logo.
    What I can do
    Thanks

    Hi Nalinpr,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community!
As per the query we understood that you are facing issue with unmountable boot volume in your Lenovo U430 laptop.
If your BIOS settings are configured to force the faster UDMA modes, this error may occur. In this situation, restart your computer and enter the BIOS and load the "fail-safe" default settings and reboot.
If neither of these issues are the cause for the Unmountable Boot Volume, then the issue most likely is caused by a damaged BOOT.INI file in the root directory of the boot drive or file system corruption.
Follow the steps below to correct these file system issues:
    1) Start your computer with your windows 7 or any operating system which you have installed in the system CD-ROM,
    2) When the Welcome to Setup screen appears, press R to Repair the installation using the Recovery Console
    3) If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the Windows installation you want to access
    4) Type the administrator password when you are prompted, if no administrator password is set then just press Enter
    5) At the command prompt, type CHKDSK /R and then press Enter
    6) Once CHKDSK has finished checking and repairing the hard drive, type EXIT and press Enter to restart your computer
If this procedure does not work, repeat it and use the fixboot command in step 5 instead of the chkdsk /r command. FIXBOOT writes a new partition boot sector to the system partition. The fixboot command is only available when you are using the Recovery Console.
As you also mentioned that the system hangs at Lenovo logo please try to remove the hard drive if possible and try to boot to BIOs and check, also try to run the LSC diagnostics.
Hope this helps. Do post back if issue persists!
    Best regards,
