Ideapad z585

I want to install Linux Mint Debian Edition on this machine and cannot. I have tried everything suggest on the net but to no avail. With both CD/DVD and USB ISO's I get to the main menu options at the beginning of the process, select the one I want and then all I get is a grey screen with a blinking cursor.
I understand it may be something to do with the graphics cars but I am completely stumped, can anyone help?

I apologize for the bad English.  I am firstly install new version of bios (this z585 only!)
http://download.lenovo.com/consumer/mobiles/60cn93ww.exe
(old has a mp-bios-bug-8254-timer-not-connected-use-noapic).
Then load default settings with "for other os" variant and efi boot first option (with legacy first not work).
win 7 i am move at ssd which trough special adapter install instead cd-rom.
After this manipulation i exclude hdd and install it on pc where install ubuntu 12.04 i386  with new partition table ms-dos on hdd ( new and amd64 version not start on z585 for me) then return hdd to the place on z585 - all work properly, after update grub add menu item with  win 7
For other distributives:
At  linux versions 3.6 and never (fedora 18, calculate 14, ubuntu beta) - boot live versions with acpi=off kernel options, but after install not work and stop boot on graphic driver load (kms with radeon problem?) for detail need delete "quiet" option from kernel parameters in grub

  • Lenovo Ideapad z585, doesn't boot?

Hi, I've got quite an issue with my laptop.
So, I've had this laptop for a while, and it worked well enough, until yesterday. I had shut the lid to put it to sleep, like I always do, and came back a few hours later to find windows frozen. Like completely, no mouse movement, no indications that anything is going on, frozen.
So, I turn it off by holding the power button down for a few seconds, wait a minute, and turn it back on. It does its normal boot screen (Lenovo logo, with a circle of spinny dots near the bottom), but for much longer than it normally does, and then it goes to a boot menu.
Now, I've dealt with this kind of thing before (recently actually, on my main PC), and my first thought was somehow the bios screwed up. So, I go to the Lenovo website, only to find that their BIOS update/recovery is an exe.
To be run on the computer, inside of Windows.
What I had intended to do, was what I did to fix my main PC a bit ago: Make a USB MS-DOS boot stick, throw the BIOS update files on there, and boot from the stick (which worked). But, I don't know if that will work with an EXE, and I also don't know if this laptop will boot from it.
I had just recently re-installed a clean Windows 8.1, by the way, and I am almost certain I don't have a virus, because I have Win. Defender running (I know, I know), and this thing sees almost no action except note taking at my college and recording some gameplay through a capture card.
So, sorry for the wall of text here, but I could really use some help with this.
    Thanks!

    Hi Jtpetch,
    Welcome to the Forums
Is the system turning on, try to perform the power drain by disconnecting all the external devices connected to the system, shutdown the system and remove the battery and adapter. Now press and hold the power button for 30 seconds and check for the issue.
Hope this helps. Do post back if the issue persists!
    Best regards,

  • System Refresh now Boot Error

    Ideapad Z585 A10
Kept freezing. Performed a system refresh on 8.1
I wanted to clean it up before my upgrade to 10.
Now after first boot up, it froze. Held power button down. Re-boot, Nothing. Was able to boot into Recovery, now getting blue screen:
    PC needs repaired
Boot Configuration Data missing or contains errors.
    File:\EFI\MICROSOFT\BOOT\BCD
    ERROR CODE : 0xc000000f
Problem, my PC did not come with external recovery media.
What can I do? Can I install Windows 10 to fix the problem?

It sounds like the hard drive itself may have failed.

  • Ideapad Y450 - Vista to Windows 7 upgrade comedy routine

I've looked for information on how to upgrade my y450 (Vista) to Windows 7 but have been unable to find what i am looking for. The lenovo page for Ideapad windows 7 information is a dead link.
What are the steps to install windows 7 on the laptop? The issue here is the app 'one key recovery'. How do I install it so this software will restore to windows 7?
To be honest this website is a trainwreck: dead links, wildly different urls and formatting, and no clear information for customers. I am eligible for the upgrade DVD I have seen mentioned (I think), but am not prepared to go through the ordeal of shipping. Couldn't Lenovo provide us all with information how to deal with this? I would have thought there should be a FAQ for Y series customers wishing to upgrade but I have not found one.
    1. Please advise how to install windows 7 so that I don't have a redundant vista on the HD for recovery. Step-by-step would help as Lenovo have non-standardised the installation with their one-key bloat. I've seen conflicting walkthroughs from randomly confused customers.
    2. Please provide a link for a support package for Y450 users that gives all the  Win7 drivers needed for the massive bloat they force on their customers (one key recovery/dolby buttons/comedy slide functions). Or we have to manually look for each driver?
    3. Please explain how users of computers shipped with Vista can upgrade successfully to Windows 7. (Yes with one key recovery etc working). The goal is to have a fully working computer - not some compromised hybrid of vista and 7. One-key is absolutely useless and an insult if we can't revert to Win7 rather than Vista.
    4. I've seen mention of a mythical CD Lenovo provided for those who had laptops with VIsta shipped in error. Can we *all* not get this software so we can have working systems?
If this information is there and I've missed it I'm sorry. I've spent over an hour looking with no results. Seeing as the first laptop I received had been repartitioned and used by salesmen, and the second shipped with a blown speaker, I'm not too impressed. I've also no idea why my laptop has vista on it rather than windows 7.  - I bought this laptop a week ago.
I hope you can point out that this is all my mistake and that the information is out there. At least then I can get on with things. If they hadn't bothered with one-key recovery (a 'feature' that puts more people off buying the laptop than encourages them to buy it) they would have saved on R&D and made a more successful product. You have to ask yourself wtf they were thinking on this one.
    Please advise.
EDIT : It appears that this recovery system is not supported in Windows 7 (please confirm). If this is the case then do I simply format C and install Win7? I have heard about 'hidden partitions'. Is this hidden recovery partition on C drive and will it be erased by a simple Win7 installation (by following basic installation wizard)?
I just want a clean installation of Windows 7 with no lingering partitions and unused data (namely vista image).
1/ Do i just insert win7 dvd and install with no issues? 2/ Please link driver pack for y450 vista users upgrading to Win7.
    TY.

Will I be able to install Win7 on my Y450 while maintaining onekey functionality with 7 (It originally shipped with Vista)?
Has anyone on this forum installed Win7 on their Ideadpad and got onekey to restore to Windows7? What steps did they take to do this?
I'm strictly a ThinkPad user and have never seen an IdeaPad, so I don't have the answers to your questions.  However, in this thread down in the Win 7 board, someone said they had gotten it to work with the RC candidate last summer.

  • IdeaPad Yoga Windows 8.1 OnScreen keyboard does not stay open

    hi
I just bought a new ideapad yoga and upgraded from windows 8 to windows 8.1. Unfortunately, I can't open the onscreen keyboard. After it opens, it immediately closes itself. This problem has also been described here, but wasn't solved:
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_8-tms/ideapad-yoga-13-virtual-keyboard-does...
Is this a known issue? Does this have anything todo with drivers? - What can I do about it?
    Thank you!

Anyone got some tips? How can I contact the Lenovo support otherwise?
I am thinking of selling my Lenovo and buying another (definitely non-Lenovo) device. They always have troubles with their drivers (and have poor support)!! Something like that never happened to my Dell notebooks.
    Thanks.

  • Yoga 2 Pro - Broken in less than a year - A terrible experience with IdeaPads

    Hi guys!
I'm hear to tell everyone about my pretty terrible experience with Lenovo and my Yoga 2 Pro IdeaPad. It's not a review or anything but more of a forewarning to those who are thinking of buying from Lenovo.
I'm also here to help others out in my situation, that is, if you are stuck with a half broken (or in my case, completely faulty) laptop and Lenovo won't help you out (fixes are in italics).
    The beginning
So I bought a Yoga 2 Pro at BestBuy in the USA about a year ago. I live in Australia so I asked about international warranty and they said that the notebook is covered by international warranty.
The day the screen flashed black and white
About a few months in the screen began flashing black and white rapidly (it goes from black to white about twice a second) for about 30 seconds to a minute. I found that you can stop this from happening if you open and close the lid a couple of times. Not really a big issue unless you set your laptop to go to sleep/shutdown when you close the lid. I don't so everything was fine.
The day the Wi-Fi NIC stopped working properly
So then a couple of months after that my Wi-Fi began to play up. I recently found out that you can prevent this from happening by ensure that you don't put any pressure on the sides of the base of the laptop (Eg. don't put your elbow on the side of the laptop and hold your head up with the same elbow).
I also worked out a while ago that you can get the Wi-Fi to work again if you go Right click Wireless Icon->Network And Sharing Center->Change Adapter Settings->Right Click Wi-Fi->Disable it->Renable it
    Here comes the bad stuff...
    Screws began to fall out
So then the screws began to fall out. I screwed a couple back in when they were wobbly but they eventually fell out without me realising. This suggests that the screw holdings have poor quality threading and as a result the screws begin to fall out. I now have 5 out of 11 screws on the backplate of notebook.
    And also the screw holdings.
Yup, the actually thing that the screw screws into fell out as well. About three of them fell out. I don't know how it could possibly do so but it did, it happened when I picked up my laptop from the desk.
And then the charger socket broke
I can no longer charge my laptop -> I now have a very expensive beverage coaster
So then the charger socket cracked in half too! Again, not really sure how it happened but it did, it might possibly be from the heat of the laptop causing the plastic to expand when heated and retract when cooled. I have the i7 CPU version so it may get hotter than normal.
The laptop no longer charges so I no longer have a laptop to use (I use my desktop to work (and occasionally my phone)).
Not to worry! I'll just make use of my international warranty...?
And then the customer service were not helpful:
And then they said I didn't have international warranty...
And then they admitted that I did...
And then they claimed international warranty does not apply in Australia...
So I emailed Lenovo customer service and they kept claiming that my notebook did not have international warranty.
I talked to Jessica, Jason, Jai, Jasmin, Jackie (why are there so many J's?) and Adam.
Eventually one of them admitted that I do have international warranty but it is not supported in Australia. How convenient for them.
The notebook has never been dropped
I am the only user of the notebook
The notebook is kept in a padded laptop bag.
I was very polite to customer service.
All I'm left with is a very expensive notebook that doesn't actually work.
As a result I can only strongly recommend that you avoid buying from Lenovo. I worry for those who have bought Yoga 3 Pro, with it's watch band design and all.
Here are some pictures I took a few weeks ago (I photoshopped the stickers out):
This is what the charger socket looks like now (Hard to take a good picture, sorry!) Note that it ha...

Same issues with my Yoga, from India.
Screen (twice), wifi, charger and battery issues, SERVICE issues, no screws in the back...
Beside that my laptop USB and bluetooth is also not working and it is soo slow...
I just bought a non lenovo charger.
Yes and my laptop never left my office table.
I was hoping to fix it in Australia and I guess not.

    final edit:
Apparently there is no support for sli on mobile nvidia gpu. Thank you ever so much Nvidia, you willf orever hold a special place in my heart..
I've miracously gotten everything else to work. Only thing left is enabling sli, which I haven't been able to.
As far as I know, I've follow the instruction to the letter, but all I get i a black screen and a log with no particular useful information that I can find:

In the end, all that I can learn from this is that stuff don't work, not why or how to fix it. A bit annoying to be blunt.
I've been googling around for answers, but the closest thing I've come to an answer, and I do hope it isn't true, is that sli om mobile nvidia gpu is not supported under linux. I've been unable to confirm this.
I do hope you can help.
    Best regards.

Just for kicks, here's my xorg.conf:

    # These profiles were provided by NVIDIA and should not be modified. If you
    # wish to change the defaults provided here, you can override them by creating
    # custom rules in /etc/nvidia/nvidia-application-profiles-rc (which will apply
    # system-wide) or, for a given user, $HOME/.nv/nvidia-application-profiles-rc
    # (which will apply to that particular user). See the "APPLICATION PROFILE

    Do not do this.
If you want help, start providing relevant information beyond "it don't work".  You say you followed the instructions ... which instructions?  What steps did you take?  It is clear from your xorg.conf that you did not follow the only instructions I could find in the archlinux wiki.  Follow those instructions, and post the output of the relevant diagnostic or information-gathering steps included there.
Also if you have information which could be useful - such as which mobile devices/cards allegedly don't work - then share that.  Don't keep us in the dark.
I should think that it's quite obvious that I've followed the wiki instruction, which basically is one line in xorg, as is the official nvidia instructions.
This is most likely a problem related specificlally to the gt 650m and/or the lenovo ideapad y500 (and perhaps derivatives thereof).
I do not believe I've left any information out.
Of course if I've done something wrong, I apologize and will do my best to avoid it in the future. As for the rest, I'd very much like to know which instructions I did not follow, as I've done all that I can think of and telling me that I haven't is hardly useful. As far as I aware, the wiki instructs you to  ad two line in the xorg.conf, which I've done. I will of course read it again, hoping to figure out what I've apparently missed, though I've read it so many times already that I don't expect to learn anything.

  • Lenovo A1-07 Ideapad Tablet Bluetooth connection

I am trying to connect my Lenovo A1-07 Ideapad Tablet to a Nokia 5230 phone using the bluetooth connection. Whilst I get the devices to pair they will not connect. Does anybody have any suggestions?

Hello, my lenovo ideapad a1 woudn't charge unless you plug the charger in really hard and hold it there. That is when the light comes on. I left it off but still it doesn't charge. Any help?

  • IdeaPad A1 USB OTG/Host Support

    Hey everyone,
Has anyone found a way to get USB Host (USB OTG) to work on a tablet that is not supported? I have a Lenovo IdeaPad A1 which was upgraded from Android 2.0.3 to ICS (4.0.4) which is also rooted. I was under the impression that all Android devices had the support for USB OTG as I bought a $70 tablet off of eBay and it did. I found out the hard way today that not all support it. I really hope someone has some insight to this as I just bought this Lenovo and am kind of disappointed to find it doesn't have something a $70 tablet does.
    Thanks in advance,
    Ben

I think this is a matter of building it into the Adroid/linux kernel and not all companys build it in for some reason. I have built plenty of kernels and its not that big of a deal especially for a high tech company. They must not have the time or can not pay the engineer.
Anyway, since you are rooted and the source is available you can actually do this yourself if you have the time and skills.

  • IdeaPad A1, what does Airplane Mode really do?

    Hello-
Got my A1 in yesterday, charged it up and turned it on. First impressions, positive. Nice cosmetics, decent responsiveness. A bit nonintutive in the human interface department. It got on my password-protected wireless LAN just fine, it seemed. And web browsing was OK, fits and starts. I went to update the firmware, and I noticed the pattern: every 30 seconds or so, the WLAN link indicator would blink out, of course interrupting the firnware download. But (good engineering at work), the download resumed when the link came back up. It took about 75 repeats, but the new firmware eventually made it down the airlink to the A1. Only one of the promised two update files was delivered; this was apparently enough to upgrade from version 9 to 10. I really hoped that the upgrade would solve the airlink instability problem. It did not. I will consult Lenovo support and see what happens.
In pondering the reasons for the airlink problem, I explored the A1 menus a bit. And came away confused. When I checked my battery usage, over half of my power was consumed by something called "Cell Standby". Whaaat? Do I have a SIM-equipped IdeaPad? [No, at least no SIM slot is apparent]. Maybe "Airplane Mode" would help. But Airplane Mode "turns off all wireless connections". That should kill WiFi, maybe even the satellite receivers. Except it didn't. WiFi worked just fine in Airplane Mode (OK, at least as well as it did in non-Airplane Mode). And the map app got the satellites and located me perfectly well in Airplane Mode, once I took the IdeaPad outside.
So what exact part of wireless functionality is disabled in Airplane Mode, if any?
    Thanks for any advice here.

When you put it in Airplane mode it turns off both bluetooth and wifi. While Airplane mode is on you can still turn on both BT and wifi but if you power off the tablet both radios will be off the next time you power up. So it appears that Airplane mode prevents inadvertant use of wireless when powering on. Note that the radios remain on in standby mode. There may be more to it as these are just my observations from use.

  • IdeaPad A1 Tablet problems

I love my IdeaPad z580 laptop, best laptop ever! But my A1-07 tablet that was bundled with it is next to useless! I barely ever use it because I end up wanting to throw it across the room. Now that my husband bought an iPad mini I really want to have a usable tablet. I have called tech support and the tablet is still under warranty but before I send it in I was hoping for feed back as to whether it is even worth bothering with.
It just plain doesn't work well and never has. It is slow. It does not update when using aps so the info loaded is out of date. This is true of webpages I load through the browser. The WIFi seems to work just fine but not the browser or android aps.

Have it repaired and then try to sell it on eBay or Craigslist. May as well get something out of it.

  • IdeaPad Tablet A1-07 Android version?

Just got my IdeaPad Tablet A1-07 tab. Looks and feels very good. I then tried to download/install an app and got a note that it would NOT work on the pad.
When I went to the "About Tablet" and look at my "Android version" it tells me I have 2.3.4.
ALL OF THE SPECS on the Lenovo site say I am supposed to have 3.1
    What's up?????

  • Will Tablet case with combined keyboard work on Lenovo Ideapad A1 07

    Hi All,
Sorry if anyone has asked before but couldn't find specific.
My wife has recently purchased a Lenovo Ideapad A1 07 for its size,  a friend who has a small android tablet also recommended to her, to buy a tablet case with combined keyboard with USB connection from amazon. When received the connection obviously doesn't fit, so I started searching around web for an adapter for it, but I’m seeing conflicting info that the ideapad either does/doesn't support USB data transfer connection point, so before buying an adapter what is correct!.
Can anyone throw some light onto whether Lenovo will update the firmware to be able to use USB at any time or has anyone have a work around. Any help and advice to get this keyboard working would be grateful as the tablet is a great little device for her.
    Gazzataf

If you are patient, go through the reviews of a specific USB keyboard that was suggested as an addition for Lenovo A1 by Amazon: You will see that even though users have tried different cables and adapters, no A1 user has managed to get this working on his tablet.
This issue may be solved by a future upgrade (if any), which will enable the USB OTG feature of the microUSB port of the A1 tablet. Until then, nothing can be done in order to have any USB device identified and working with A1. I really hope that I make a mistake here and that someone will come up with a working soultion for this issue ...

  • Problem with sound in lenovo ideapad u 350

    @unick,
Have you tried doing a factory restore? Did you have this issue when you first have the laptop? I understand you wrote that this issue came after 2 weeks? Is there any antivirus software which you have installed? Appreciate if you could try a factory recovery first if you haven't done so.

  • Extremely high memory usage on ideapad u310

    Hi all,
I've got a problem with my ideapad u310 touch running windows 8.1. When doing completely nothing (just staring at the desktop with no programs running) my laptop uses ~55% of ram. I find this extremely high, when i open a few chrome tabs and listen to some music, maybe open a powerpoint it even rises to 80+%. My Medion erazer laptop(also running 8.1) with 4GB ram uses ~65% with the same usage and ~35% while doing nothing. I deleted almost every lenovo programm except energy management and OneKey recovery and i disabled as much programs as possible on startup but there's almost no difference.
Now, I don't really care about the high percentages but what I do care about is that it gets extremely slow when 80% of the ram is in use. Does anybody know what i can do about this? I already tried the refresh windows option but that didn't help. Or am I just stuck with a device that has very very very poor multitasking performance.

    hi spromper,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
Opening Task Manager will show you which application utilizes the RAM.
Also Doing a clean boot will help on freeing up RAM
