? IDEAS FOR A CONTOLLER CARD FOR ATA 400 GB HD??

Hi Chaps,
The Nitty Gritty:
Seeking an inexpensive PCI controller card to unlock the full size & speed of my newly installed 400 GB Seagate Ultra ATA HD, which is currently limited to the 137 MB cap of my oldschool Quicksilver G4.
Looking for widely available card that I could possibly find in-store. I have perused the discussion boards at length but feeling more confused.
Budget is key, I have heard they are available as little as $40. I do not need any RAID capability, just fast and reliable inexpensive product.
System:
G4 Quicksilver AGP
450 Mhz
768 MB SDRAM
CD ROM DRIVE (soon upgrading to Pioneer DVR-111D)
OS 10.4
Thanking you all in advance for any suggestions!!
Best,
-- Jesse

  • Best bang-for-buck video card for hi-end Photoshop work..?

When I bought my rig 3 or 4 years ago, I was told that when it comes to 2D performance, all modern video cards are created equal. That the price differences really only affect the 3D side of things.
So I bought a NVIDIA GeForce GT 240.
Why this thing has a fan, I have no idea. Like I said, even when I bought it it was considered "bottom-of-the-heap". Anyhoo, long story short, the fan died on me a couple of days ago. I can now keep the card from overheating through a house fan pointed at the open case. Naturally, I can't keep this going forever. I need to buy a new card.
The good news is that I don't need ANY 3D performance (unless vector logos count). I only use my computer for hi-res Photoshop work (at 1920x1200+ resolution with PSD files that sometimes reach 5 or 6GB) and full-screen video playback. No games are being played on this rig whatsoever.
The bad news, however, is that money is an issue. I can't just go buy the latest $300 card, especially not to put on a 3 or 4 year old rig. The Core i7 920 CPU and 10GB of ram (on Windows 7 64) will keep me going for a couple of years more, but I don't expect to still be using this rig much further beyond that.
I just want to keep using my Adobe suite and play movies in hi-res on this thing. That's it.
I've been told to look into the NVIDIA Quadro series, but that appears to me out of my price range. I'd like to keep it under $150. Or even $100 if at all possible. Other cards quoted to me are the GT630 and R7-250 (which is apparently a rebranded Radeon HD 7770).
What would you guys recommend that would be the best bang for my buck in this scenario? I'd hope most of today's cards - even the cheapest ones - are at least a step up from the NVIDIA GeForce GT 240. Right?
    If anyone has any advice...

There was an article on Tom's Hardware yesterday, announcing that nVidia are stopping driver support for it's older cards.
    http://www.tomshardware.com/news/nvidia-eol-graphics-card,26304.html
This goes back to the 300 range and earlier cards, but also includes the Geforce 405 from the 400 range.
Be that as it may, my GT 240 is still being listed as supported in last week's 335.23 driver release. And that's the driver that fried it. This "1 driver for all our cards" thing is really for the birds. There's no way for product owners to know what the latest, safest driver for their card is. I don't think NVIDIA thought this thing through when they announced they'd be going with a "single driver for all" model.
I don't think NVIDIA realizes what a huge potential lawsuit could be headed their way from other owners like myself (but not me, I'm not very letigious) who saw their cards get physically damaged by drivers that were supposed to be compatible with them.
I see you recommending I stay under $100, which was my original plan, but then you said I should definitely get a Quadro. When I checked, Quadro cards were more expensive than the GeForce line. Did I misunderstand? Were you saying NOT to touch the Quadros?
On other forums, they tell me to push for the new GTX 750, swearing its 2D performance makes it worth the price, despite the fact that it's clearly a GAMING card, and I don't game.
    I'm so confused.

  • Looking for proper SIM card for applet development

    Hi,
I would like to develop some applet on the SIM card. And does anyone know where I can get the proper SIM card?
I have a bit search for test SIM card and blank SIM card, but I am not sure which one can be used for applet development. It seems that Gemalto provides some development suit that includes some sample cards. But the suit is too expensive and maybe I don't need the tools they provide. I don't want to buy the wrong one, so it would be very helpful if any of you has some provider information or links!!
    Thanks in advance!!
    regards,

maybe I don't need the tools they provide. You do as you will need a tool to install your applet on the SIM card
I don't want to buy the wrong one, so it would be very helpful if any of you has some provider information or links!!Are you just want to write applications or wanna be able to install them too on real cards ? If the purpose is just writing of apps then oracle and ETSI have provided everything, you don't need to buy any additional tool. But yes for dubuging you will need some third party tool or write your own one : -)

try external USB sound card option, m-audio or creative are a couple off the top of my head you could use. they usually come with a full driver and product suit that  can achieve a much better sound than the soundmax in touchsmart have to offer.

  • Looking for PCI SCSI card for G5

I've just learned my old SCSI PCI card (5 volt) from my G4 won't work in the G5 (3.3 volt PCI slot).
I'm looking for a 50-pin SCSI PCI card, 3.3v, that will work in a G5 & with OSX ... any suggestions? Thanks.

I'm interested to know if this is the plain old Adaptec 29160N or the Adaptec PowerDomain 29160N. I made a similar upgrade 4 years ago and I had an identical problem. I never got my old scanner to work. The ratoc SCSI--Firewire bridge didn't support multiprocessors, and the Adaptec PowerDomain card was prohibitively expensive. Due to the lack of updated drivers for the scanner, VueScan was necessary in either case, if remember properly.

  • Recommendation for good sound card for test & measurem

There are quite a lot sound card based oscilloscope, spectrum analyzer, signal generator softwares, such as multi-instrument?. An ordinary?sound card?can only measurement signal within 20Hz~20000Hz range (with flat frequency response),? I would appreciate it very much if anyboday here could recommend a sound card that can extend the above frequency range as?wider as possible, towards both the lower end and higher end.

Such software is pure bullhit, because every soundcard has its flaws, wich will render the results unuseable. And the next point: most soundcard- drivers and the OS itself are changing the signal in a different manner. Maybe vollume boost, or reverb effects, some signal changing to get better results in terms of audio quality and signal clarity, and so on. Get a Oscilloscope. Maybe you will need to sell your house for a good one, but this is the only good solution ^^?The best soundcard for this purpose is not a real soundcard, but a recording card. There are some expensi've models out there, especially terratec or EMU. (I dont know really if EMu is selling REAL recording cards)Message Edited by fffcmad on 0-5-20082:24 PM

  • Looking For PCI ESATA Card For G5

it will be running in both leopard and tiger
can anyone recommend one and where to buy?
i bought a rocstor 2ue drive and currently using it usb mode which is very slow.
    thank you

since you don't say dual core G5 i assume you will need a PCI-X card (i'm pretty sure only dual core G5 use PCI-Express).
the firmTek is a nice card and has the ability to boot from attached drives. it does have the disadvantage of only supporting SATA I i.e. 1.5Gbs and is on the expensive side (approaching $200), where as many of the cheaper cards (~$80-90) almost all use Silicon Image chipset support SATA II i.e. 3Gbps but don't have ability to boot from attached drives..
so it kind of depends on your needs.. if you don't need to boot from the attached drives you can get a less expensive card, with faster SATA II capabilities for $80-90.
just do a google search for pci-x esata card... owc is a good place to start as well.. i can confirm that multi-interface externals can be a bad choice as well... i got slower than USB 2 speeds from a Seagate Free agent triple interface drive and got transfer speeds faster than my internal drive by taking same drive out of the Seagate enclosure and putting it into an OWC esata only enclosure (dual drive enclosure for $67).. i have a norco, 4 port, pci-x estat card.

    Hi,
Maintain the activity "Purchasing Group in Purchase Requisition", this is M_BANF_EKG. Set activity to:
    01     Create or generate
    02     Change
    03     Display
    06     Delete
    08     Display change documents
Then maintain the purchasing group EKGRP and entered desired purchasing group.
If you add this to a role, or create a new one say "Purchase Requisitioner", then assign the users. If each user should have different access rights to purchasing group, you would need to maintain this seperately per role. Perhaps create a unique per purchasing group.
Use SUIM>Roles>By Auth Object and enter one above. This will show all roles which this current object and you can check which users have the role. Again through SUIM or AGR_USERS table.
    Thanks.

  • Passive graphics card for 2-monitor setup

I am looking for a graphics card for use with 2 monitors in a dual monitor configuration that has:
    Passive cooling
    1 x DVI port
    1 x DisplayPort
I'm aware that CS6 can  make use of some of the more advanced graphics card features, such as Open CL, but I don't understand the technicalities of this, nor what this implies when choosing a card.  I will not be doing any video-editing, video playback or gaming.
    My questions are:
Would a card such as the Sapphire Radeon HD 6670 Ultimate provide full support for CS6, without being overkill? (http://www.sapphiretech.com/presentation/product/?cid=1&gid=3&sgid=1088&pid=1240&psn=&lid= 1&leg=0)  -  I thought that the "low active power consumption and Dynamic Power Management" features seem a good idea, since the card will never be used very intensively.
Or would the much cheaper Zotac Synergy Edition GeForce GT 210 be just as good for my needs. (http://www.sapphiretech.com/presentation/product/?cid=1&gid=3&sgid=1088&pid=1240&psn=&lid= 1&leg=0)
Or are there other types of cards that would be more appropriate?
And finally, can you connect a single-link DVI device to a dual-link DVI port?  (If so, I would like the DVI port to be dual-link, for future compatibility.  If not, it will need to  be single-link, for my current hardware.)

For the benefit of anyone searching on this topic in the future, a posting of this question on Silent PC Review (http://www.silentpcreview.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=65413) yielded some extremely helpful responses.

  • Cuda/OpenCL card for Mac Pro

I bought my Mac Pro a little too soon (early 2008, so EFI32)
This is the one I have:
    8-core processing
Two 3.0GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon 5300 series processors
    Intel Core microarchitecture
8MB of L2 cache per processor (16MB total; each pair of cores shares 4MB)

I am looking for a video card for video editing/color correcting.  For Assimilate Scratch and Davinci Resolve I need a card that does CUDA.  For Final Cut Pro X I need one that does Open CL.
The ones I really need (Quadro 4000, etc) won't work with a 2,1 Mac Pro with EFI32.
Anyone have an idea of a video card that does CUDA and Open CL that will work with this older Mac Pro?  Obviously I need a new Mac Pro, but I'm still hoping that Apple will market a new Mac Pro with Thunderbolt so I'm holding out for that; so I don't want to spend cash on an updated (post 2008) Mac for now.
Two other questions, what is "name" of the process or in this Mac? Nehalem? Woodcrest?
The card I had purchased for Final Cut Pro X (a Geforce 8800 GT) seems to have died. I've tried it in two different slots with no results. Any other ways to test a card?

I want to say, you just have to be kidding!

  • Video Card for G4 sawtooth

I just received an ATI 9600 pro Mac & PC card to run Motion with BUT the card does not fit my AGP slot or any pci slot.
I'm thinking I have the earliest version sawtooth that maybe has an AGP 2 Slot? I know that when I looked up the UNI # to see if I could upgrade to dual processors (via SOnnet instructions) it came up with 00003 - the only number that could NOT be upgraded. It was originally a 400 mhz.
So, could someone please advise which card (if any) will fit into my G4 that will run with Motion? Hopfully not a bank buster.
    Thanks for any help.

    G4 1.2Ghz 1.28Gram   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Please keep in mind that this card is an 'update' to the 9800 Pro that you mistook it for (the original card for G4s was indeed only 4x compatible). ATI merged the G4 and G5 variants into the card I linked to above. Barefeats.com has a review of it here.
Of course, like I said earlier, in case it doesn't fit in your machine (entirely possible), you just might be out of luck, as I'm not aware of any other G4-compatible (never mind Sawtooth compatible) card out there.

Create a NEW account/ID for her using these instructions. Make sure you follow the instructions. Many do not and if you do not you will not get the None option. You must use an email address that you have not used with Apple before. Make sure you specify a birthdate that results in being at least 13 years old
