Ideas for causes of iMac Running Slowly

My iMac shows symptoms of spinning beach balls (sometimes rainbow, sometimes blue - does that mean anything?) on a number of applications. In addition the machine will sometimes stop completely for 10 secs or more and then resume whatever it was doing. While this effects a number of application Safari and Dragon Dictate are the big problems.
So far I've looked at the following, although I don't know that my analysis has been exhaustive.
1. Caches etc.
I installed Cocktail and have it run everynight when I log out of the account.
2. Age of the Machine (Its a 2007 iMac)
One developer was kind enough to run some tests for me. He had an identical machine and he ran the same test file. His setup showed no delays. File opening and use of the file was all relatively instantaneous. Mine frequently encounters long delays when opening the same file and using the file.
3. Permissions
This was the first thing I looked at. I did a manual repair and now its being done with Cocktail.
4. Reinstall the OS
I did a reinstall of the OS. There was no difference after the installation.
5. Utilities
I have a few untilities running in my menu bar. These were all removed and the machine was restarted without them. No difference in performance.
Additional Information
1. I ran the activity monitor.
When I get a spinning beachball an application/utility called "ScopedBookmarkAgent" is often consuming 95% of the CPU resources. If the spinning beachball lasts a couple of minutes then this application will be consuming large amounts of CPU resources for most of the time. When the machine stops completely I get the impression that the Activity Monitor stops as well. I cannot find any useful information on "ScopedBookmarkAgent" (I'm not a developer) that would suggest why it might be a problem or more importantly how to fix any problems with it.
2. Disk Drive Space
I have approximatly 100GB free on a 500GB drive. The drive is not the original drive, that was replaced by Apple under Apple Care sometime ago.
3. RAM
I have 4GB of RAM, the maximum possible on this machine.
4. OS
I'm running 10.8.4
I'd appreciate any thoughts on possible causes of my problem and suggestions on how to fix them. In particular with regard to "ScopeBookmarkAgent", since it would appear to be a culprit in the problem.

The next time you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Scroll back in the log to the time you noted above. Select any messages timestamped from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • Script causing Explorer to run slowly

I frequently get a message, since upgrading to the new Verizon email, that says: A script is running on this page that is causing Explorer to run slowly. I have the choice of continuing to run the script or end it. If I end it the email gets hung up. If I dont everything slows down. What is going on here?

Verizon seems to have removed the "Go To Classic View" tab if you have been using the new format for any length of time. However, you CAN simulate the function of that missing button and revert to the Classic View (despite what Verizon Customer Support reps might tell you) simply by following these very simple instructions:
Login to your account and go to your inbox view. In the address bar at the top of your screen, type the following EXACTLY as I have typed it here:
    http://webmail.verizon.com/signin/VMCOptOut?src=vmc
Click ENTER to the right of the address bar (or press the ENTER key on your keyboard).
(this command basically tells the system that you are Opting Out of the new view)
That's it!  Your account should now be reverted back to the Classic View.
    Enjoy!

  • My IMac runs slowly all of a sudden

    Hi
My IMac runs slowly all of a suddent with the catherine wheel appearing often as i move between porgrams and browse web sites
I have downloaded a sophos anti virus and have run all the security updates from the Apple site
    Suggestions

Since you are using OS X 10.6.8 I would recommend that you reboot from your Original Installation Disk that came with your computer while holding down the D key.  Then run the AHT (Apple Hardware Test) or Extended Apple Hardware Test to see if any of your hardware components are failing.  Then from that same Disk I would run Disk Utility to use "Disk Repair" and then "Repair Permissions" and see if that solves the problem.
    Hope this helps

  • IMac runs slowly in Photoshop

    Hi all,
I have a fairly new iMac (mid-2008 20" model) with a 2.4ghz Intel processor. I am a web designer and use this machine every day for my work. Several months after installing Adobe Creative Suite 3, I noticed that Photoshop was causing the cursor to jump and/or become jerky, as if the video card or processor were not keeping up with what's going on. This tends to happen after the computer's been in use for several hours or days after a restart, and it gets so bad I can't work. I have been following this in Leopard's Activity Monitor, and I noticed that Photoshop (being memory- and processor- hungry) taxes the processor more heavily than many other programs, which I expected. The strange thing, though, is that over time the Activity Monitor shows the "System" as taking up more and more processor capacity. I.E. when I first start up, the system is using 0-20% of the processor, the rest being available for the user; but after awhile, the system is requiring 50-90% of processor capacity, the result being that as soon as I switch into Photoshop from another program, the system is immediately overtaxed and starts moving very slowly (especially the cursor, as I said).
Now, here's the really strange part. As I said, this began happening a few months after I first installed Adobe CS3. I re-installed the software at Adobe's recommendation, and it was fine for another few months, but it began happening a few days ago, which is exactly the same time I shared a jump drive with a friend's worm-infected Windows XP machine. I know Macs don't get Windows worms, but is it possible that this thing has lodged itself on my system somehow and is causing it to run generally more slowly?
I appreciate any help you can give,
    Nathan

    > That is a flat out lie, Phil Shock.
    Right ... I'm actually
    i lying
about your Leopard experience because that would benefit me in so many ways ... 8/
Whatever, Castaneda. You've never mentioned using it that I recall and I'm fairly certain you haven't bought it - you're obviously not running it on your ancient G4. Maybe cursory glances with your wife's Macbook? (which you also hate as I recall) .... feel free to enlighten me about your vast Leopard experience. What
    b specifically
    don't you like about it?
    > Leopard is arguably and easily the worst OS ever released by Apple.
    No. It's not.
    Buko-
    > ...the lack of stability is with InDesign is stopping me plus the fact that Epson is not updating the 2200 drivers.
I can't speak for stability with InDesign because I don't use it much but everything else I use is (and has been) rock solid. And the NON-updated Epson 2200 driver works just fine with Leopard - as well as it did in 10.4 anyway.
I totally agree that there's no
    i highly compelling
reason to upgrade to Leopard, but the little things do add up. I love the ability to view content in the Finder - movies, images, PDFs, etc., without the need to open an app. Spotlight works fantastically - huge improvement over the version in 10.4. Networking has been much improved, Mail is much better, and on and on .... as I said, there's no killer feature but the combined overall improvements make the upgrade worthwhile.
FWIW - I use both 10.4 and 10.5 on a daily basis - 10.4 on a G5 Quad at work, and 10.5 on my Mac Pro at home. I prefer 10.5.

    > Just a sample of Leopard's history if you haven't been following it:
C'mon, that proves nothing. You could find similar threads about every OS released in addition to every version of Photoshop released. There will always be problems that may or may not be related to the software - and people will post about them.
The only real issue I recall with PSCS3/10.5 was the text input glitch that was rectified with 10.5.2. I've been using 10.5 full-time since then and haven't suffered
    b ANY
    of the "trauma" you mentioned.
    > ... so Apple is apparently abandoning it and bringing us a whitewashed version which is to be called Snow Leopard.
If only other developers would follow suit. Imagine if Adobe would concentrate on actual performance improvements, rather than worthless bells and whistles (adjustment layer panel, anyone?), that cater to the newbie because the bean counters know new features and dumbing down the app will move more product. There are improvements in CS4 that make it worthwhile of course, but it's obvious that some stuff is only there for a perceived sales increase.
Only Apple has the guts to pull this off and I say good for them.

  • Mid 2010 27" iMac running slowly

My 27" Mid 2010 Imac has been running more slowly lately.  It takes longer for start-up, and I get the pinwheel frequently when running programs.  I upgraded to Lightroom CC 2015 this week, and the regenerations of the photos on the screen are taking a lot longer than they used to.  I upgraded my memory a couple of years ago to 8GB, so I don't think memory is an issue.  The following is my EtreCheck report:

  • FF now freezes ~every 10 mins. Get Adboe "script in this movie is causing Flash to run slowly." reinstalled FF and have latest versions of FF&Flash. Help pls

Have used FF since v1. NEVER had a problem. NOW it freezes like every 10 minutes from any random web page on computers at home AND work. Have researched this and have done the following: 1) reinstalled FF, 2) updated to latest versions of both FF and Adobe Flash per instructions here. It still freezes.
The message I get is: "A script in this movie is causing Adobe Flash Player to run slowly. If it continues to run, your computer may become unresponsive. Do you want to abort the script?"
Then a dialog box that you can't click in eventually after 2-5 mins FF starts working again - until it doesn't.
I "heart" FF - but don't have the time to troubleshoot and fiddle with my browser just so it works. Looks like I am being FORCED to make the move to Chrome, which is a shame.

  • Best parent controls for iPads and iMac running on BT Home Hub

    Hi,
Despite the great sounds coming from the big ISPs about parental controls, they're determined to make a really simple concept absolutely impossible.
Firstly, I'm not trying to lock-down my family's access to the net, but I have two boys aged around ten, and being boys they're inquisitive, so are probably getting closer to stumbling across some seriously dodgy content... And I want to try to prevent that... It should not be hard. If I could limit the times they were online, just if browsing gets out of hand (they're kids remember) that would be a handy option as well.
So on to the technical details... We have a standard BT broadband account that comes into a new BT Home Hub. This is currently our WiFi point. We run a laptop, two ipads, iphones and an ipod touch on Wifi, and have a desktop ethernet'd to the Home Hub. BT offer a downlaodable Family Protection package that allows user accounts to be configured, but this does not appear to work on an iPad or Touch.
Very shortly, we're about to retire the PCs from family life and install an iMac. So we're getting into a properly Mac environment. I was also considering installing a Time Capsule for back-ups and had considered stringing this in series on the Home Hub, then networking all of the Apple devices off of the Time Capsule.
Ideally, the controls would be at a us level, or at least by device. I've come across some App options, but this seems like an unecessary layer of proprietary complexity.
So how Do we deploy parental controls? The simplest option, that BT have failed to realise, would be a network solution that filters everything coming into the house and stops it before it even hits the Home Hub - but that doesn't appear to be an option.
So what options do we have? Any ideas? I had heard suggestions that I could manage user control via the Time Capsule, but that's proving hard to confirm.
Happy to supply any further information to help with this query.
In summary, how do I stop **** getting onto my boys' iPads/Touchs... Should be simple????
    Cheers, Mombee.

Sorry, but the Apple routers do have any type of parental controls on them.
If you have not already done so, you might want to take a look at the parental control options offered by OpenDNS.

a problem since it's right at the frame where the movie stalls - it
actually calls another external page or two along with images from
folders, so i'm not sure what or where the issues is...
does this look like a problem?

neither of the statements you have within the the while()
loop are 'conditions' and evaluate to 'nothing' - this script will
be very problematic and it would be far better to use a FOR loop
    here.
while (_root['cat_'+k]) <-- means nothing there is no
    condition declared
while (_root['cat_'+k] != undefined) <-- at least means
    something
whatever is within the condition of the loop should evaluate
to a Boolean return - eg. true/false - either 'continuing' the
looping action or finding that the condition has been 'satisfied'
    and the loop terminates.
additionally a nested while loop is going to be 'dangerous'
unless you really , really know what you doing and have an
absolutely controlled variable set that will 'always' without fail
    complete.
further - it's not a good idea to name MCs the same and nest
them as in: ( gallery.gallery ) this will cause problems for the
compiler - I'd change one of the two of these instance
    names.

  • Ideas for upgrading this iMac

I want to upgrade this old iMac (see below for system profile) and am looking for ideas and maybe how-to links. Any help you can provide would be GREATLY appreciated.
BTW, here is more info on my machine not listed below...
I have already upgraded RAM (because it is the easiest to do) to 192 MB
I am currently running OSX 10.3.9 with no classic support.
Can I upgrade video, HD or anything else.
I am pretty sure I can upgrade to 10.4 as I do have firewire... but if I am mistaken please let me know.
iMac PowerPC 750 (400 MHz) 512 KB L2, 192 MB SDRAM, ATI AGP 8 MB VRAN (Total)   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

you are correct, you can upgrade to 10.4 if you like.
However, I would definiltey suggest more ram if you
do. 256 seems to generally be considered a minimum
for OS X these days, the more the better. your
machine can take up to 1 gig of ram.
You can upgrade the hard drive up to 127 gigs if you
like. that's about the only other thing that can be
upgraded. the video is soldered to the board.
Thanks for the info... So the internal HD can be upgraded... are there any good how-to sites I can use to help me out with the physical process of upgrading.
You also mention that the video is soldered to the board. I thought when it said in system profile that the bus type is AGP that it was an AGP slot where I could plug in a different video card.
Thanks again for the quick reply and very helpfull info!!!

  • How do I update firmware for mid 2011 iMac running Yosemite?

I tried the link in the Apple support pages, but it told me I need Lion to install it. I bought the computer used. It came with Mavericks and I updated to Yosemite. I don't have Lion or any way (or desire to) install it.

There is no update for the mid-2011 iMac firmware that will fix the fans running at high speed.
Only the OEM (original equipment manufacturer) Apple hard drives had the proprietary firmware designed to properly monitor the hard drive temperature.
So you have several possible solutions:
    1. If the computer was sold to you with a warranty, rather than "AS IS", my first choice would be to force the seller to restore the computer to the condition it was represented to be in when you purchased it, with an OEM Apple 500GB drive that does not cause the fan problem. If they cannot or will not correct the problem, make them take it back and refund your money. Consumer advocates such as the Better Business Bureau can help you prepare a formal complaint against the seller, and perhaps lead to a successful resolution through arbitration, without hiring an attorney and filing a lawsuit.
    2. If you bought the computer "AS IS", you'll have to attempt to repair the problem yourself:
    A) Locate an exact replacement for the original OEM Apple hard drive with the proper firmware and install it on your own;
    B) Purchase a 'compatibility kit'. OtherWorldComputing www.macsales.com reverse-engineered a solution to the problem and sells a short cable with an external temperature sensor for the hard drive that can be used successfully with non-OEM drives. http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/DIDIMACHDD11/
They also sell the sensor cable with a toolkit that can be used to disassemble and install the cable. http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/DIYIMACHDD11/
    C) Try the fan control program mentioned in earlier replies.

  • Can I use a German Snow Leopard upgrade for my US iMac running Leopard?

I just read that for certain Intel based iMac's it is still possible to upgrade to Maverick. I'd need to upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard, first, to start the process. The issue is that I'm in Germany. The German Apple site sells the Snow Leopard upgrade, but I don't know if I can use it to upgrade my US iMac (early 2008/Intel based/ running 10.5.8)? Does anybody know if there is a difference between the German and the US version?

No difference what so ever other than the printing on the media.

  • IMac running slowly

I own a late 2010 iMac. I understand it's old but I do not believe it should be running as slowly as it is. I've tried everything to fix it. I ran Mavericks since it came out and haven't had issues since a few days ago. I ran Disk repair and it told me something was wrong and wasn't able to fix it. It told me to restore and erase the computer. I did so and still slow and unresponsive. Boot time takes forever. Is there anything I can do without bringing it to apple? The warranty is way outdated and I don't have the money to replace the hard drive.
Again, the iMac is completely erased so their should't be any issues. Please help

If Disk Utility found a problem and was unable to repair it in Recovery mode, then the hard drive is failing or there is some other hardware fault. The fault must be repaired if you want to continue using the machine. Alternatively, you may be able to start up from an external drive and stop using the internal one.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • Black and white laser printer for Imac running 8.6 os

Does anyone know of a laser printer for my older Imac running 8.6 os?

    jackson hole 88,
The 300-320-360 series was nice and 10 ppm but no ethernet. Jump right to the 600 series, including the 16/600 or the 640. Find a recycler that refurbishes them. You can get printers there for as low as $25. Buy two and have spare parts. Toner is still available for that series at affordable prices.
