Ideas for cloning a 10.4 Mail Server on a schedule

Hi,
We'd like to clone our mail servers daily so we can restore from the clone if there is a failure. Both CCClone and Super Duper will clone on a schedule but we keep getting errors with these products. I assume it's because the services are running while the machine is trying to clone. We've tried cloning to both and Ext HD and internal additional HD.
Hardware used G4's G5's & Xserves. All are running OS 10.4.9
Any ideas how we could do this successfully?

I believe there is something other than running-services at play where your cloning errors are concerned. I have successfully used SuperDuper! to clone both my XServe's boot drive and my RAID drives for quite sometime. On several occasions, I have restored my boot drive from a clone with no trouble.
I would contact the SuperDuper! developer about the errors you are getting. I have found their support staff to be very responsive.
In my humble opinion, restoring a server's boot drive from Retrospect would be a near impossible task for an average human. So, based on advice from UptimeJeff (forum member), I use SuperDuper! and two external hard-drives to make my boot drive backups. I make archival clones every couple of months for storage, and then run a regular clone backup with SuperDuper every night (swapping out the back-up drive ever week. That way, I've always got an off-site recent clone and archival clone and an on-site recent clone and archival clone.
I also have my mail store located on a RAID (not boot) drive, and I backup that drive using the same recent clone and archive clone approach shared above.
As Pterobyte mentions, there is no reliable way of cloning mail services, so I use mailbfr to backup the mail stores and settings every night. It's free (donations accepted), and very easy to install and use.

Spam fighting Idea for Email Users-Beyond Junk Mail

I get so much junk mail I was hoping there was a way to automatically bounce back anything that got classified as junk. Then the important person who sent the email could use the old telephone for contact if they found they weren't getting their communication through. There would be an added bonus of all the emails that were junk would look the same (Mail Delivery System) and faster to delete.
Does anyone else think this is a good idea or is it just stupid.

A Gmail account is free, can be accessed as an IMAP or POP account with an email client on your computer, has webmail access, has an authenticated SMTP server so you can send messages with the account regardless the ISP being used for your internet connection, and Gmail has a good spam filter at their incoming mail server.
You don't want to reply to, bounce back, select any links, or render any HTML for spam for a number of reasons.

Any ideas for the following problem: when mailing links with firefox as the default, multiple files appear and I can't close them or successfully mail the link?

I may have picked up a virus. I use an iMacBook Air. When I attempt to send links via my default (Firefox) email program, Firefox immediately opens dozens of files that I'm not able to close (when I attempt to open or close these, they scroll horizontally and won't stop). I am unable to do anything except quit Firefox. The mail naturally never gets sent through Firefox; I'm not a particularly adept computer user, so I don't know what to do about this.

You will probably have the mailto protocol set to "use Firefox", the above link show how to fix that.

Why do we use RMAN DUPLICATE for cloning DB on a different server ?

DB version : 11.2.0.2, 10.2.0.5
I want to create a clone of my Production DB in a test server. In the past, I have taken hot backup of this production DB and restored and recovered it in a different server using plain RMAN commands.
After restoring the control file , mounting the DB and cataloging the backup pieces in the test server , I run

where they are trying to restore and recover using DUPLICATE command as shown below.

Can't they just use plain RMAN restore and recover commands as I did ? What advantage does RMAN DUPLICATE have over the plain commands ?

Gmail incoming mail server offline

Hi, for weeks my gmail account has been constantly logging out. Today I can't get on at all. The message is" the certificate for this server is not valid yet" any ideas.
What should my incoming mail server be?

Problem with outgoing mail server

Hello,
I use Mac Mail on my Mac Book Pro with my yahoo.fr email address.
For 3 days, the outgoing mail server is offline, and I have no idea why. (The incoming mails: no problem).
I checked the name of the server smtp.mail.yahoo.fr, changed my password, but it remains offline.
Has anyone a solution...? Thx a lot for your help!!

My imac is the same. However if I access my mail the old fashioned way.......go to safari...yahoo...mail...then I get in and all is ok, so I don't think Yahoo are the problem here. Loads of Apple users seem to have this problem, but no one seems to be able to sort it out, maybe when everyone goes back to a cheaper pc Apple will listen.

Mail server connection problem

Mail in my macbook pro from time to time interrupts mail server connection (mac mini server). As i discoveredn turn off turn on wi fi reestablish connection. Does anybody know how to solve the problem?

Check the server log for details on the local mail server activity. These mail server logs are available via Console.app or via Server.app.
To verify local DNS services — a very common cause of problems — launch Terminal.app and issue the following harmless, diagnostic command:
sudo changeip -checkhostname
You'll need to enter an administrative password for the sudo, might then see a one-time message describing the use of sudo, then some server network configuration information if and as available, and finally an indication that there are no changes required, or that there are DNS or network or other issues.
You'll need to be referencing your local DNS server — you cannot reference your ISP DNS servers, nor any other off-LAN DNS servers here — in your clients. This either by explicit configuration in the clients, or via the DNS server settings distributed by your local DHCP server. Do not reference both local and off-LAN DNS servers, either — just your own local DNS server(s) on your local NAT'd network. No off-LAN off-NAT'd-network DNS servers can provide valid DNS translations for your local LAN, and SMTP traffic is based on properly configured DNS.

ICal Server email invitations with external mail server

So I see lots of people have worked out the kinks to get iCal Server to send invites to external email accounts when using the Mail server on the same machine as the iCal Server, but who has it working when the mail server is somewhere else? Any help would be appreciated... I have setup it up like this:

User Name: com.apple.calendarserver (I created this account on the mail server)
Password: Same as the one in my keychain for com.apple.calendarserver

Okay, got this figured out. Appears that the email server my client's company uses is terminating the connection when the Xserve tries to do anything. I setup a test Gmail account and used those settings instead and everything worked just fine.

Have to change mail server address when I go into office?!?!?

This may be a more broad networking-type issue, but I thought I'd post here as it's mail in which I am affected.
When I am on the road, I have an IP address in my "mail server" settings (IMAP). However, when I am inside the office network, this IP fails and I need to manually change it to the internal IP address.
Does anyone know a way around this issue, so that I (and all the other mobile people) could simply have the external IP address of the company permanently in account settings.
I'm thinking some way of forwarding requests to the external IP to the internal one.
Someone please help, it's a small but remarkably annoying situation!!

This is not hard to fix, but requires access to your companies internet DNS server.
Most companies managed seperate dns zones one for interal and external.
The trick is to set up a External Zone on your internet DNS server. For example.
Your external mail server name is
mail.company.com(65.21.21.11)
and your internel name is
mailserver.company.lan (192.168.1.10)
Add a new zone to your Internal DNS server for company.com
Add all the A records from the external zone to the new internal zone, but use the internal IP addresses instead of the external.
Then on your mail client you just setup mail to point to mail.company.com and DNS will do the rest for you.
This makes life simple on the users, but is more work to update DNS because you have to manually change the records in both zones every time you update a DNS record.

Setting up Mail.app to work with OS X Server's Mail Server

Thanks to some help from the Apple support discussions, I got WebMail working on my OS X Server machine in the office. But I can't seem to figure out the settings for Mail.app clients on the same network (and outside the network for that matter).

Can I set my iCloud email as the outgoing mail server for my google apps email account in Mac Mail?

I have a google apps email account from an old client, all my work emails have been going to it for years. As I'm no longer affiliated with this client I'd like to make a transition to using my iCloud account for work. I asked people to use my iCloud address but as they've been using my google apps address for years it's what automatically comes up when they type my name.
I figure the easiest way to make a transition is if I reply to all the emails that arrive at my old address from my iCloud address and gradually they will start using my new address without realising it. But I can't find a simple way to do this.
In Mac Mail preferences > accounts > Google IMAP (my old account name) > Account information > Outgoing Mail server (SMTP) I'd like to set my iCloud SMTP server. But although my iCloud account uses its own outgoing mail server for its own account , it is not in the server list when I select my google account. I've tried to add it to the server list as smtp.mail.me.com but it caused my whole iCloud account to give me error messages until I force quit Mail...
Any ideas?

In iCloud/Mail, have you tried going to Preferences (select with gear at lower left)/Composing and setting a Send from address there?

What I did not catch at the time was if you setup a Group, one of three ways, the cc step no longer works. There is a fourth way but it is not practical. Creating local groups on individual Macs.
*Group method 1 per David_X:*
Use edited group files on the server.
The following sends to members of groups but does not show all recipients in the received message...
In /etc/postfix/aliases, add...
groupname: :include:/path/to/groupname.txt
In a file called groupname.txt (using plaintext editor)...

[email protected]
Reload aliases...
sudo newaliases
sudo postalias aliases
sudo postfix reload
Mail sent to [email protected] gets passed to amavisd once, before then being relayed out for each individual recipient.

Make a user, e.g., "accounts"
In mail settings, select 'Forward' option and enter the group members' email addresses, comma separated e.g.,
[email protected],[email protected]
This gets a bit 'long' for lots of members.
The email then gets sent to each of the people in this list.
*Group method 3 that I just discovered:*
Create a group in Workgroup Manager.
Drag the users you want in it.
Save.
Test sending to that group.
Best part, the group name shows up in Address Book if you have LDAP setup.
So I have setup all three. If I send an email to any type of group, they work.
The problem:
If one of those members in the group also has a BCC setup to Gmail or any other outside email, they never get the e-mail copied out to the external account.
Example:
I send an email to [email protected]. He gets the email there and also a copy at his Gmail account.
If I send an email to the Sales group that jsmith belongs to, he gets the email there but nothing at the Gmail account.
It looks like the mail server processes the "aliases" file and skips the "Recipient_bcc" file that handles the forwards.
Is there a way to have my cake and eat it too? David_X your thoughts also?

Bump.
Short version. Sales guy has a Gmail account he wants his e-mail copied to also.
Send e-mail directly to his Xserve account, he gets it there and it gets sent on to his Gmail account.
Send an e-mail to the sales Group that he is a member of, he gets it there but it never gets sent out to the Gmail account.
Ideas?

I've just updated and installed Mountain Lion. I've clicked for iCloud for Mail. The correct information in the email address, Full name and Incoming mail server panes are greyed out, and I can get no further in bring my iCloud a/c online. Any ideas? Thanks.

They are grayed out because they are automatically set up whey you check Mail in System Preferences. If you didn't do that, go back and do so and your iCloud email account will be set up automatically.

More hard bounce for invalid user from mail server

Hi guys,
this is my first post, but i have reade more post in this forum.
my questions is:
i have a domain into my ironport that receive more invalid recipient but the hard bouns are generate from mail server after the incoming mail pass trhough ironport.
I don't have a ldap server
you can help me for find a solution for block the invalid recipients?
this is my idea:
create a new dictionary with into all host of the domain and i apply a policy for control this dictionary.
thi solutio have a problem that i must inser in dictionary every new user create in the mail server.

This would really be much easier if you had LDAP. If there is any way you could get LDAP to work in your environment, then that would make the IronPort end of things much easier. But if not, then you can do other things.
Using a dictionary as you suggest would work, but it would mean accepting the bad messages and then bouncing them. This is because you can't consult a dictionary during the SMTP conversation. A better solution would be to put the allowable recipients directly into the RAT. That would cause the invalid recipients to be rejected during the SMTP conversation, which will reduce the amount of backscatter you generate.
