Ideas on good printers to use with a mac pro

hello,
I recently purchased a mac pro but
my printer just died. never ends...
before getting a new one, does anyone has an idea on a good photo printer to use with my new beast:
Machine Name: Mac Pro
Machine Model: MacPro1,1
Processor Name: Dual-Core Intel Xeon
Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
Number Of Processors: 2
Total Number Of Cores: 4
L2 Cache (per processor): 4 MB
Memory: 2 GB
Bus Speed: 1.33 GHz
I used photoshop a lot; print documents as well; so format must be 81/2 x 11 at least. quality is a must but budget restrictions , well a must too: 300 us$ is the max i can use on this toy. any ideas?
in advance i thank you very much for any help.

MAC PRO   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Hi Sandrine,
After tens of thousands of image prints I use Epson
printers exclusively, printing primarily from
Photoshop. Even all my 3D renders end up printed out
of PS. I get away with a C86 for a small printer and
use a 4800 Pro for serious larger format prints. Were
I to go for a smaller Epson today, I'd go for an
Epson Stylus Photo R260. It is new six ink technology
brought to an 8.5 x 11" printer and the reviews are
remarkable. If you want more bells and whistles, this
same technology is brought out with the ability to
print on CD/DVDs as well and has an LCD screen for
cropping and printing directly from digital cameras.
Those reside in the Epson Stylus Photo R380.
I tend to go with printers which have only those
features I need. Don't forget that the price of any
good printer doesn't reflect the cost of usage. Good
paper and ink combinations are the real cost. The
printer is just a loss leader. For a full page high
quality print, figure that you are spending $2 -
$2.50 per and you won't be unpleasantly surprised.
I'd also suggest not using 3rd party inks in these
new Epsons, even if they are offered.
Dear Welles,
thank you for your help.
i have been using epson for a long time and never been disappointed until recently.
the last printer i had was an epson stylus photo R340. always used their ink cartridges... it died on me 2 days ago (it was seven months old). so i am a bit cautious with epson. I will definitely look into the models you mention though.
have a great day
sandrine
PS. Please, let me know if you've had experience with canon inkjet printers. i heard their graphic/photo printing is very nice. which models, i have no idea. Plus, I don't know how well they get along with macpro.

    No.
The entire enclosure is tuned for both external jack placement, EMI-RFI radiation, airflow, and for cooling. You need exactly the correct shell and fans for the electronics you wish to install in it.

  • USB headset's microphone starts to sizzle when used with my Mac Pro.

    Hello,
First I would like to say I'm sorry for my english, I'll do my best but I'm not sure at all of what I'm writing.
Here is my problem: last year I bought a new Mac Pro 2.93 GHz Quad-Core, everything worked just fine except my headsets. I had a one year old Plantronics ".Audio 750 DSP Stereo Headset" that worked perfectly on my previous PowerMac G4 MDD.
When I used it to speak the microphone starts to sizzle after a random period of time (I just have to disconnect and replug the headset to make it works again for some time). I tried with every applications possible (Skype, Ventrilo, Teamspeak, WireTap to record myself and some others) and the problem always appeared.
I first though it was a coincidence and maybe my headset had a problem so I contacted Plantronics, explained the problem and they offered me to replace the headset with a new one but I had the exact same problem.
I tried with another headset (same model as mine) my brother had and this time it worked fine so I kept it for one year but some days ago it started to have some problem (not related to the mac) so I decided to get a new one, a Plantronics one again but a new model (Plantronics GameCom 777 Surround Sound Gaming Headset) and my problem is here again.
I searched on google, on many mac related forums and I didn't see this problem anywhere so I try here before sending back my headset and try another manufacturer.
The problem definitely comes from my mac but I don't know if that's a problem with all the "Mac Pro 2.93 Quad-Core" or just mine (as I said, except this problem everything works perfectely).
If you have any solutions I would be happy to hear them !
    Thank you.

May have been good that you waited The better subject line might be, "What is the best recommendation for a Microphone Headset" or "Why does my Microphone Headset have noise".
After looking around a bit, and looking back over our posts, I've reached some conclusions that I would draw if I were you. I don't know if this addresses the totality of it, but this is what I think at this time.
    The product: http://www.plantronics.com/northamerica/enUS/products/computer/console-gaming-headsets/gamecom-777
Now I know at least one application for this, and I can imagine a bunch more.
It's pretty expensive compared to one alternative I found that was the only device sold like it in this entire store, which I find odd: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Altec%20Lansing/AHS602/
    It looks to be of high quality and quite Apple ready;
The headset's surround sound hardware is built right into the included USB adapter, which plugs into any USB port on your PC or Mac with no additional software necessary. Simply plug the headset in to the USB adapter, and you're ready to go
So why won't it produce good sound?...
That the headset is just faulty perhaps. That the adaptor is faulty. But that's as far as I can think as far as the headset goes. There should be no other adapter that helps if the one they supply you does not. If it was an adapter problem it would only be their adapter problem, you don't need anything between that and your Mac. That device as it's set up is good to go. So the older adapter worked fine for 5 hours? That would point me to the current one they sent you as the problem. You'd have to ask them why one works well and the other does not (and if their phone or email support is a bad as their site support it, I feel sorry for you).
    http://www.plantronics.com/northamerica/enUS/support/?WT.svl=leftnav
    http://www.plantronics.com/europeunion/fr/?requestid=1207885
But say all is well there (you'd have to try another one they send you to see).
If what you have is fine, what else could it be.
This is all I can come up with:
    1) Your USB ports on the Mac. Have you tried different ports?
    2) Perhaps a long cable or something else concerning the headset (hmm, maybe not, something else in the Mac?), something that is still being affected by electrical interference. The different adapters you have... are they that much physically different?
    3) An inherent problem on the 09 Mac Pros. They have one glaring problem Apple hasn't fixed yet regarding audio, that playing any raises the Macs temps to really high levels and degrades performance in apps when audio is playing in the background. For instance, playing a song in itunes. For many of us 09'ers our machines start to run really hot, really quickly.
Whether that has any impact on your issue I don't have a clue, and you'll get no help from Apple there..
So that, Igda, is all I can come up with. Those are the things I'd be mulling over right now.
I'd contact the company and tell them about your situation and particularly about the adapters. I'd ask if they have heard of any of their products having a problem on 09 Mac Pros.

  • What external interface do you use with a Mac Pro?

I have a brand new Mac Pro, which of course has no room for internal cards. I have been looking at the third party interface boxes via Thunderbolt 2 (Aja IO 4k, Black Magic Ultrastudio 4k) but none of these seem ideal. Aja's IO 4k has no audio input at all, so my sound board and voiceover microphone simply won't work with Audition or Premier. Black Magic's requires some sort of video signal in order to time the audio (whatever that means, I don't get it yet) in order to get a voiceover track into Premier, and it won't work with Audition at all. Any suggestions on good external hardware that has both video and audio input/outputs that works with the Creative Cloud? What hardware are the creative cloud editors using if you're stuck in the Mac world (which regrettably we are)?

    Apple's own Pages app.

  • What external harddrives do I need for use with new mac pro?

I just bought a mac pro late 2013 however I got the one with only 256 gigs of storage. I do a lot of video editing and was wondering if my firewire 800 owc hardrives work just as fast or should I upgrade to thunderbolt and usb 3.0 drives? My work flow is usually storing my footage on one drive and my project files on another drive. Would it really make that big of a difference to upgrade? It seems to me that when working in premiere..the actual mac pro is what really matters.

Would thunderbolt drives really make that big of a difference in terms of editing speed?
The model I use to think about this is bottleneck analysis. (A chain is as strong as its weakest link.)
ThunderBolt is really FAST. It is so much faster than the rotating drives that ...
...it does not get in the way at all (But it cannot speed anything up!)
Rotating drives can produce a single burst of data off the platters at about 125 MBytes/sec. FireWire800 is about that speed, so it will not provide much of a bottleneck. Gigabit Ethernet is a little slower, but in that neighborhood.
ThunderBolt-1 has enough bandwidth to support an eight drive enclosure with all drives working simultaneously. But it does not speed anything up.
If you transition to the fastest SSD drives in enclosures, all those numbers change. There, fastest transfer times are near 800 MBytes/sec, and Firewire800 and USB-3 get in your way.

  • How does time machine work when being used with a mac pro?

How does time machine work when backing up a mac pro?
Considering the fact that the mac pro can hold 8TB and a external (non NAS) hard drive can hold only 2TB does time machine only backup the OS disk.

Time Machine will backup everything by default, on every disk in your Mac.
Choose System Preferences > Options to exclude items. You could exclude everything except your OS...but I'd think it is your data that's more important to you, if you have to make choices.
    See...
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1964018
While it's true you can store almost 8TB, how much do you think you'll actually store? If you have 1TB of data you want to store then a 2TB drive can do it. Also when your TM drive begins to get full it will begin deleting the oldest backups to make room.
You could also get a Drobo with 8 bays...

  • 24" Cinema Display (LED) with 2008 Mac Pro

My 23" Cinema Display monitor is beginning to show signs of aging, having been used with two Mac Pros and a G5. I'd like to upgrade the monitor to a 24" LED Cinema Display, but the 2008 Mac Pro doesn't have the mini-DVI port. Is there any upgrade path here? The new (unavailable) ATI Radeon card?, mini-DVI to DVI adapter (monitor to computer)? I can't believe Apple would leave recent Mac Pro owners with no path to upgrade the monitor (save for the overpriced 30" non-LED monitor).

The nVidia card says it is specifically for the 2009 Mac Pro, while the ATI says it is for the early 2008 or the early 2009. The hard to get ATI appears to be the only card available for the 2008 that has the mini-DVI plug. I'd love to be able to get the less expensive card, but the early 2009 uses different memory than the early 2008.
The cards have been used successfully in Mac Pros older than thiose listed by Apple
    <http://www.barefeats.com/nehal06.html>
"If you didn't buy a new 2009 Mac Pro but want to use the new graphics cards released with the Nehalem Mac Pros, you can buy the GeForce 120 GT and Radeon HD 4870 in kit form from Apple. They both worked in our 2008 Harpertown 3.20GHz Mac Pro as you can see from the graphs above. We also got the Radeon HD 4870 to run in the 2007 Clovertown first generation Mac Pro. A close colleague has one working in the 2006 Woodcrest first generation Mac Pro."
    <http://blog.macsales.com/602-testing-those-new-graphics-cards>
This report says the Radeon HD 4870 Mini DisplayPort didn't work in the older Mac Pros, but hat may be fixed when 10.5.7 appears.

  • What is a decent sound card to use with DJ Mixer Pro?

I'm having trouble finding a compatible external sound card to use with my Mac Mini. Specifically, I need one that supports surround sound to use with DJ Mixer Pro. I am currently unable to use the "Preview" function of the program during my sets to ensure proper blending from one track into another. I've gotten pretty good at working around it, but with the proper sound card I should be able to preview a track in the "rear" of the surround sound without disturbing the "front", which plays live to the crowd. Most information I can find on sound cards pertains to home theatre application, which I have no interest in. I also don't need anything too sophisticated as I use the program for local club performances instead of professional production. I would prefer something that connects through firewire to prevent any kind of delay, but most of these seem to be discontinued or expensive overkill, so I hope a USB 2.0 will suffice. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • What is the best external battery to use with a macbook pro retina?

Looking for the best option here. What is the best external battery to use with a macbook pro retina?

You should check your date of purchase against the manufacturer's warranty
or guaranty since some of those better brands have some recourse should
they fail within a specified time period. A good reason to save dated receipts.
Since solid-state USB drives probably don't (all) use a wear-leveling software
to equally utilize their recordable space evenly, it is possible that some of these
may exhibit a failure in some sector areas due to excessive over-writing. If the
ones you use do not have such a technology or an undercounted total capacity
with a means to automatically write in other sections, you may have to consider
manually using a disk utility to zero-overwrite and reformat them occasionally.
Even so, that may only help a marginal flash or thumb drive work a little longer.
Should a camera memory card fail you still may be able to attempt with margin of
success, to +recover image files+ from it. re: http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec
The standard default format they ship with works well for most file types; so if
you aren't moving OS X or Mac app specific files around on a USB flash drive,
the original format should be fine. Oh, you can use Disk Utility to attempt to do
a repair; but in some cases you may have to reformat them, etc.
    {Some of the flash drive warranties or guarantees may vary from between regions;
so if you have one with a '5 Year' guarantee in the US, other rules may apply in EU,
    or when you seek to replace an item under warranty outside of where it was bought.}
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Using a 30" Cinema Display with new Mac Pro

    Hello Everyone:
I just purchased, and waiting to arrive a new 2014 8 core Mac Pro which is an upgrade to my 2009 quad core Mac Pro. I currently use a 30 inch Apple Cinema display which has the DVI connection. I was thinking that I would use a DVI to HDMI adapter and plug the 30" into the HDMI port on the new Mac Pro. I have since heard that people have been having issues with this older monitor getting it to work properly with the new mac pro. some have suggested buy the $99 mini display port to DVI adapter and using that, but I don't believe there is a mini display port on the new mac pro.
I have considered buying a new thunderbolt display because I am assuming that it will have a much better image quality than the older 30 in display but I hate the fact that it's a 27" and I would be giving up the 3" in size. I do a lot of video and audio recording editing and love the extra screen real-estate.  Can anyone confirm a couple of things for me?
    1. Will the 30 inch display work with a new mac pro and can I use the DVI to HDMI adapter?
    2. Does the new Thunderbolt display have a much better image quality than the 30 in display and because its newer, will look that much better with the mach pro?
    Thank you in advance.

    1. Will the 30 inch display work with a new Mac Pro?
    Yes.
Can I use the DVI to HDMI adapter?
Not if you want full resolution.  You need a Mini DisplayPort to dual-link DVI adapter
    <http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB571Z/A/mini-displayport-to-dual-link-dvi-ada pter>
It plugs into a Thunderbolt port (and USB port) on the computer.
    2. Does the new Thunderbolt display have a much better image quality than the 30 in display and because its newer, will look that much better with the Mac Pro?
No, it has more pixels (in the vertical direction), but they are spaced a bit more apart, so you don't want  to be as close to the display.

  • I have an external hard drive that was formatted by a PC and has files and directories etc. I want to format it and use it on my IMAC for backup but I can't seem to write to it nor can I delete current content. How do I initialize it for use with the MAC?

I have an external hard drive that was formatted by a PC and has files and directories copied to it etc. I want to use it on my IMAC for backup. I see it on my my IMAC . I can open files etc.  But I can't seem to write to it nor can I delete current content. I don't care if I lose current content. How do I initialize it for use with the MAC?

You can't write to it because it's formatted as NTFS which OS X will read but not write to. If you want to continue using the drive with both a PC and OS X you will need to download and install NTFS-3G so you can then write to it from your Mac. You can get NTFS-3G at:
    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/24481/ntfs-3g
If you want to use the drive exclusively with your Mac then move the data off it and reformat it in Disk Utility (Applications - Utilities - Disk Utilities) as Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)

  • Format External Western Digital Drive to be used with only Mac

I recently ordered Western Digital My Passport Essential. I will get it by tomorrow evening.
It comes pre-formatted using NTFS file-type.
I need to format it, to be used with My MacBook Pro running Lion, and old White MacBook running Snow Leopard. One more thing, I will be using with OS X only. I don't have Windows/Linux system at my place, and I don't have any intention to be using with Windows/Linux in future.
Should I format it using HFS+ or HFS+ Journaled or something else? Why?

    Like Niel said...
but also you might want to partition it rather than just erase the visible partition, i think some of these disks come with annoying hidden partitions and crappy backup software.
If you want to make sure you get the whole drive to yourself, instead of using the erase tab in Disk Utiliity, go to the partition tab, then select 1 partition (or which ever you want from the drop down.) and configure as you see fit. this will make sure that no hidden partitions remain.
You might also want to select GPT as the partition map incase you ever decide to use it to boot OS X from.
