Ideea on iTunes Backup

Hello,
I would like to post here a very simple ideea about iTunes Backup used on a computer (for iPhone and iPad at least). Maybe Apple will consider some of its customers feedback.
It would be greatly appreciated a checkbox or notification to what is iTunes backing up. For example when I switched from iOS 4 to iOS 5 I did a backup but lost my music, that backup had to be made separately and not so easy.
So, how about something simple like this, when you click Backup, you are presented with the following checkboxes (What would you like to back up?):
[  ] Apps (including their data)
[  ] Settings
[  ] Music
[  ] Photos
[  ] Videos
This could also be available for iCloud backup. At least in Romania or other countries where music purchases cannot be redeemed after they are bought and also they are not backed up in the iCloud.

Mario,
Thank you for your reply, which has given me a better idea of the system.
What confused me was that as you will know the backup window in iTunes
only shows a single line bar chart at the bottom of the window for a particular backup, and only
when hovering the cursor over one of the sections it shows for example the amount
of space used for Data and number of photos to name a couple of things. I had hoped or (wished)
it to show more like folders and subfolders showing e.g. Notes, favourites, data etc.  Basically an
easier view of what is what in the backup.
I expect that when I do the restore to the iPhone 5 I will be able to see then what is transferred over
and take it from there.
Thanks again and apologies for the delay in replying.
Although my skill is Windows, I am a novice on the workings of IOS/Apple
and getting used to working with the specific settings and workings of the structure of
IOS is strange to me as a new user of Apple devices,  backup & restore being a good example.
I will get used to it.  Especially with help from users like you to advise.
Many thanks again.

Normally, I would suggest restoring the iPad and uninstall and reinstall iTunes but you have done both of those things - more times than you ever imagined!
Have you thought about turning auto syncing off?
Without connecting your iPad to your laptop, start iTunes. Click on Edit. Click on Preferences. Click on Devices. Check the box next to "Prevent your iPod etc. from automatically syncing." Click OK.
If you do this you can backup the iPad right away before it syncs. You may want to go into all of the iTunes tabs and just make sure that all of the current content on the iPad is selected to sync before you actually do sync.
This doesn't solve the problem, but it would prevent the automatic sync and erasing content. Hopefully, in the next few days- when iOS 5 is released - you will also be relieved of this weird iPad behavior - since the iOS devices are supposed to become PC free.
BTW - and this is no excuse for what you are experiencing, but I have found that some of the game apps that I had on my iPad turned out to be quite troublesome and after I removed them, my problems went away. I know that is almost sacrilege with regard to the Angry Birds addiction .... But I'm just saying ...

  • Changing iTunes backup location to SAME hard drive

    Hi
I have an unusual problem.  As you are no doubt all aware iTunes will backup your iPhone or iPad automatically to the folder (windows users) c:\users\<username>\appdata etc etc.  You can change this to another physical drive using Junction which I have read up on.  Unfortunately in my case I actually need to relocate the backups to another location on the SAME hard drive and junction doesn't appear to let me do this.
The reason?  We have a client with 50-60 computers on a Windows Server network and utilise roaming profiles.  The default backup location means these iTunes backups automatically get uploaded to the server each time a user logs off placingstorage stress on the server as there are dozens of large (32 - 64Gb iPhones and iPads) with multiple backups for each user.  I would like to make a separate folder on each users C: drive on their workstation and instruct the iTunes backups to go there instead which will keep it out of the roaming profile.
    Anybody have any ideas?
    Regards,
    Brendon

What makes you think it doesn't work?
    CD C:\Test2
    MkLink /J C:\Test1 C:\Test2
works fine for me. Test1 is linked to Test2.

  • I routinely check my iTunes backup files...

And reread old text messages. However, I recently started my iCloud account and since then all my iTunes backup are old, and not showing me any text convo's for the past 3-6 months. Any idea whats happening? I feel as if it has taken my most recent backup and stored it in my iCloud but I have no idea how to retrieve that without resyncing my phone, which ultimately deletes past SMS conversations that you haven't saved.. I need some help!

Go into iTunes and check your backup status on your device's summary page. It's probably set up to back-up to iCloud instead of your computer. Just change this behavior and apply the change.

4 voice memos in iTunes backup from iPhone had ! marks and would not play so I deleted them and although they are still on the iPhone, they will not sync back to iTunes from iPhone.

You may have to try deleting all the music from your phone (by going to Settings>General>Usage>Music, swipping All Music and tapping Delete), then sync it all back on with iTunes in order to fix this.

Don't you just love changes in interfaces?
I found the answer to my question.
When you attach a device (iPhone, iPad) to your Mac, in iTunes 12 in appears as a tiny icon in the second "row" of the iTunes display. Click the icon and the familiar iTunes display for the device appears. From there, on the Summary screen, you can see the dates of the backups of the device (iCloud and backup to the computer). You can also use the button to backup to the computer.

  • When I tried to update my iPhone 5s to iOS 8.1, I was forced to choose to restore or back up.  Back up wasn't working so I had no choice but to restore.  I lost pictures over the last two years.  Cloud and iTunes backup are not working for me.  Help!

How can I retrieve photos when it says my cloud and iTunes backups are empty or not backed up?
When I tried to update my iPhone 5s to iOS 8.1, I was forced to choose to restore or back up.  Back up wasn't working so I had no choice but to restore.  I lost pictures over the last two years.  When I tried my cloud, there was nothing.  I would get notifications that my cloud was full, but I thought there would at least be some photos in there.  When I tried to restore a back up, it said the last time was two years ago.  I thought when you're on wifi, it automatically backs up.  I've charged my iPhone into my Macbook a bunch of times, so something should have backed up.  Is there any hope for my photos?

Sorry no backup - no pictures.
Yes phone will automatically backup to icloud when on wifi and phone is charge, but your phone storage was full so it stop backing up.

  • Does itunes backup Exchange e-mail

    Hi All,
I am investigating implementing iPhone 4G with Exchange 2007 for my client. I need to know for sure if iTunes backs up Exchange e-mails (synced via ActiveSync) or not. I will be enforcing certain policies on the iphone via ActiveSync but that is all for not if users can backup their Exchange e-mails unencrypted via iTunes to their personal laptops. I know that iTunes backups can be encrypted but it would be a much simpler implementation if I do not have to worry about enforcing encrypted backups. I called AppleCare support and the tech advised that Exchange e-mails are not backed up via iTunes. However, he could not provide any official documentation to confirm that. He directed me to http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1766, which I had already read. This document says that "Mail Accounts" are backed up and also has other references to ActiveSync and Exchange but it never explicitly says, "Exchange e-mails are not backed up via iTunes." Can anyone with some expert experience with this please confirm?
    Many thanks for your help!
    R

This document (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4859) references Mail settings.  I have considered iCloud backup to be the same thing as an iTunes backup in regards to what it backs up and I was always under the assumption, based on those Apple documents, that it was only the mail settings and not the mail itself.

  • I was told to create a password for my itunes backup, which i did.  Now its telling me my passwords is incorrect.  I dont know what to do because i am locked out of my phone and don't remember its password.

I forgot the password to unlock my phone.  I read online to go to itunes and create an encrypted password for my backup and then sync my phone and then restore it.  But now, when i try to enter my passcode into itunes to backup, it tells me it is incorrect.  I don't know what to do..  I am locked out of my phone and my itunes backup.  please help me

The backup encryption passcode has nothing to do with locking a user out of their backup.
If the encryption passcode has been forgotten, nothing can be done.  There is no reset for the encryption passcode.
Delete the backup and create a new one.

  • I dragged my ext. HD iTunes backed up folder into my new mac. Now there are duplicates of every song!! The problem is both versions seem to actually BE there when I check the info. Now I have no idea if iTunes is playing the files in the trash or not

Hi. I'm in a situation here and would really welcome some guidance. I dragged my ext. HD iTunes backed up folder into my new mac. Now there are duplicates of every song. Both versions seem to actually BE there when I check the info. So, I moved what I thought were duplicates into the trash from iTunes, and resigned myself to the fact that I would have to do this manually for each album. I did this with about 10 albums. I emptied the trash and lost them even though they still LOOKED like they were in iTunes. I repeated the process tonight on a bunch of other albums not realizing yet that I had screwed up terribly the first time. This time I saw what had happened and pulled the files out of the trash, onto my desktop and dragged them back into iTunes, then deleted the duplicate files that had exclamation points next to them. Now I have no idea if iTunes is playing duplicate files from the trash or not, and am nervous about emptying the trash. Anyone dealt with this before? Thank you

  • But how do I create a new iTunes backup password without knowing the previous one?

In case anyone keeps track of such things, I'm among those folks who really doesn't recall ever being asked to create an iTunes backup password, but that's irrelevant to my question.
I'm not in any bind. I don't need my backup files to restore anything. I will shed no tears as they are moved to the Recycle Bin (indeed, I will gladly do the deed myself).
That said, it appears impossible to create a new backup password without knowing the previous one.
If the only "solution" is to wipe my iPhone's memory and start from scratch, I will be a sad camper.
Any help? Are backups to iCloud encrypted?
    Cheers...

    Additionally:
Be super critical & meticulous (and whatever other synonym I missed) when you get a new password:
Write it onto your bedroom wall, or someplace off of a computer that you will always find.
If you active 2-step verification, the key is VERY important. Lose it & you may be toast.
If you don’t 2 step verify, & use the Security Question instead --> do not lose, or forget the answers.
Very nearly the same outcome!!!!!:  Bad experience.
If you add a 2nd email address, make sure its a RESCUE address not just an alternate address.
If you lose these, you lose access to your 3rd party purchases via Appstore for future upgrade. That will make you VEWY, VEWY UNHAPPY. Apple new OS versions do update, but add a new device & likely you will be unable to use your content on that device. It will never load if the ID locks up.

  • How can I move my iPad's iTunes backup from one user to another?

Is it possible to move my iPad's iTunes backup from one user to another, so as to change which user the iPad is syncing to without deleting any app data? Currently the iPad is synced to one user on my iMac, and I would like to transfer it so that it will sync with a different user on the same iMac (using iTunes, of course). I'd like to replace content from the old user's iTunes library with my user (eg. music, movies), but I don't want to loose app data in the process if I can avoid it.
I have tried to use the pathway /Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup but my iMac doesn't seem to have a MoblieSync folder. I wouldn't know what to do with the backup anyway though.
Can anyone help me or is this request too complicated, difficult, or impossible? Thanks for your help!

The Apple Document covers this. See the footnotes of my google docs
I've done this, it is easy, but takes time and patience.
On the existing mac with OSX and Configurator:
    ========================================
    - run disk utility and verify your disks are ok, a must
    - make note of the user logged in when using configurator  such as "bob"
    - connect a new or newly reformatted USB formatted for Apple
    - run time machine and backup to the USB
    - Take the mac off the network,
    - Buy a new mac
    - setup the mac with a new logon account like Paul or  "bob2"   do not use BOB !!
    - finish the new purchase setup, get to your desktop
    - now run the migraiton assistant  moving bob from the USB to the new mac
    - reboot, logon as bob, launch configurator and connect just one ipad.  Test

  • Iphone: recover photos and contacts when itunes backup is corrupt/not-compatible

Thought it would be useful to share my experience with an iphone restore failure.
Scenario: my friend did an ios update (she has sworn to never do such a thing again based on this experience).  The restore failed and her iphone would not boot up. iTunes said we need to restore.  She had an iTunes backup (no iCloud backup) that had been used for a previous restore (i.e. a known good backup).  When we attempted to restore, we got this:
I googled this problem, and see that we are not the first to experience this.  I chatted with Apple Support and conclusion was "start fresh".   I found several open-source tools (iPBA2, iphone Analyzer);  but while both showed photos from the backup, neither showed contacts.
I copied the iTunes backup directory to my desktop Linux (CentOs) machine.  Browsing in the directory (use the GUI file browser, or run "file *|grep JPEG) I could see all the photos.  So I uploaded these to DropBox and gave the link to my friend.  Result: I consider this a 100% success at recovering the photos.
Using the Linux "strings" command, I found files that looked like they contained contact list.  For example, I knew that I (Tucker) was a contact in her list, so I ran something like:
    for i in $(ls)
    do
    strings $i |grep Tucker > /dev/null 2>&1
    if [ $? == 0 ]
    then
    echo found Tucker in $i
    fi
This identifed a few likely candidates.  For each of these files I then ran:
    strings <filename> |more
and simply looked at the output.  I found a file that had a bunch of names/phone-numbers.  I saved the output to a file, ran some scripts to clean it up a bit, and I had a crude recreation of contacts (at least 1 phone number for each contact).   I emailed this list of contacts to my friend, and she can now manually re-enter contacts as she sees fit.  I can see this file type is sqlite.  I tried various experiments reading this and other files with sqlite3, but did not have any success at finding actual contact info.   Result: I consider this a partial success,
There are a number of files in the Backup directory which show up as file type "Adaptive Multi-Rate Codec".  These appear to be voicemail messages pushed to the phone.  I did not care about these.  If you open them in the Linux GUI file browser, you can play them back.
Bottom line: Apple Support said "start over".  Reality is, with a little effort, you can get back photos (most important, since these cannot be re-created from scratch), and some contacts (less important, since eventually you can re-create this with a little work).  Might be other stuff (calendar, ...etc) that can be harvested if you poke around some more.
    My recommendations:
    1) Set up your phone for both iTunes and iCloud backup
    2) Now assume that both your iTunes and your iCloud backups are corrupt.  Do not trust them.  The only way (to my knowledge) to see if they are good is to restore them to an iphone.  Sort of like buying house insurance, and not knowing if it will pay for your damage until the house burns down.  If the backups are good, then fantastic.  If they are not good, you will have an alternate strategy.
    3) Get a flickr account.  Set your iphone to sync photos to flickr.  flickr offers everyone 1TB free.  I like a backup scheme where you can "see" your backup, and have confidence it is really there.
    4) Login to icloud.  Export your contacts to a file, and make a copy of file on another machine, or to the cloud (googledocs for example).  Maybe you can export other stuff.  I didn't really care about this, so no comments on that.
    5) If all else fails, dissect files on Linux as described above
    Comments/flames welcome.

Iphonebackupextractor for windows xp is a strange piece of software, which lets you extract only one file per session until you pay the registration fee. with "iphone backup extractor" from supercrazyawesome for mac you get the same functionality for free, so I could get her photos/films back. For the contacts you will need a sql-browser, which I had not try yet.
