Wait a sec did this just start?
You set up the smart cover function in settings (you did that, right?) so, if you did that and it's failed you make an appointment at your nearest Genius Bar now.

I love the Smart Cover. It fits the way I work and I love the instant on/off and the always available screen protection. I wouldn't use my iPad without it.
I got a Cover Buddy for the back, because I wanted the back to be less slippery when I'm using the iPad in the classroom, teaching. I picked this back cover because it's VERY lightweight, easy to get on or off and, protects the corners, has accurate cutouts for the ports, and (in the colors) has a rubberized surface:

I have a Built NY "hoody" slip on case with a hard internal shell that I use when I'm in the field and I can put the iPad with the Smart Cover and the Cover Buddy inside this . But for everyday use, the Smart Cover with the Cover Buddy is a terrific combination.

I'd take it into my local APple store and have them look at it. There may be something wrong inside your device.

The setting for iPad cover lock/unlock is in settings > general for iPad 2.
The iPad 2 and new iPad if both are using iOS 5.x or later the setting exist in settings > general.
So, if you worked at an apple store I think you should have known that the setting exist.
You are right, a hard reset (force restart) should only be used if iOS device is unresponsive or apps crashing...etc.
But, a simple restart helps as well.

  • If I buy the smart cover and my iPad have a code, when I open the case will be unlocked?

I would like to buy the iPad mini smart cover, but my iPad have a password, so I don't know if I get it, the cover will auto unlocked my password?

No.  When you open the Smart cover, the iPad will be at the Enter Passcode screen waiting for you to enter it.  No Autounlock.

  • HT204158 Can the Smart Cover be used to support the ipad in the vertical position?

Can the Smart Cover be used to support the ipad in the upright vertical position?

It can, but its not very secure, and only in a completely vertical position i.e 90 degrees.

  • Why has my ipad2 stopped clicking when i close the smart cover?

Why has my ipad2 stopped clicking when I close the smart cover?

I forgot that I had slid the slide switch to the off position for notifications and alerts.  Problem solved.

  • Cant get the smart cover to click on to the ipad 2 anymore

The smart cover doesnt come to place the right way on my ipad2 anymore. It stopped working. The magnets are there but its like they have been pushed to the side inside the ipad.

The only way to fix this problem is: send it back to apple and order a new one...
    hope this helps

  • Is there a protective travel case for the iPad2 that will cover the smart cover as well?

Is there a protective travel case for the iPad2 that will cover the smart cover as well?

There are a variety of well-made sleeves from SF Bags which will accommodate the Smart Cover. I'm partial to the neoprene bags and sleeves from Bult NY and I use this "hoodie" netbook sleeve (in black) for extra protection when I'm traveling or in the field because it has a rigid shell to protect the back and sides:

For everyday, I slip my iPad, with the SmartCover on, into a small neoprene messenger bag, whose 6 pockets hold my iPad, a wireless keyboard (in a sleeve from SF Bags), Kindle, iPad, and cables /chargers:

  • Why does the coating of my iPad 3 is faded by the magnetic connection of the smart cover?

I bought the smart cover with my iPad 3 on July. Recently, I realized that the magnectic stripe of the smart cover that are used to attched to the iPad has faded some of the silver coating!!! It's normal or something is going wrong? should I vist Apple Store to solve it?

    Hello!
I can recommend you do the following:
1/ Quit Mail completely via the Mail-menu
2/ Open the Finder and find the go-menu near the top left corner of your computer display (not the Finder-window) Choose go to folder.
Copy-paste the following line into the field that appears, including the ~ :
    ~/library/mail/v2/maildata/
3/ Move all files that start with "envelope" and "ExternalUpdate" to the trash. Don't empty the trash in case we need to restore these files (which is not likely, but still)
4/ Restart OS X. Open Mail. Now it will re-import your existing mail. Is your issue solved after this?

  • What does the Smart Cover do? Shut it off or just standby as the lock button?

    Hi:
Is the Smart Cover any must to have? Isn’t standby/turn off/lock the iPad 2 with the Smart Cover the same as pressing the lock button? What does it really do the Smart Cover to the system?
    Thanks!

The smart cover puts the iPad to sleep when it's over the screen, as soon as you lift it up it turns on. You can also use it to prop up your iPad

  • How to use the Smart Cover for FaceTime and Videos?

    Hi,
I bought a new iPad recently with a Smart Cover. I find the Smart Cover very good for typing, at the low angle. The angle is very nice, it feels very comfortable and it allows fast typing. But then what is called the FaceTime/Video angle seems way too steep for me, like 80 degrees. I need to be like 3 meters away, at least, to watch a movie correctly or to be captured by the FaceTime camera. I'm rather tall but still, I don't really get it. I thought for the first couple of days that I was folding the cover in a wrong way but it seems not.
Am I the only one to experience this issue? Or is there another way of folding the cover to get a correct angle? I haven't tried another Smart Cover but I would doubt that mine is faulty. But if it is how the Smart Cover is designed, I'm surprised that Apple went with that, I mean, I can't see the use of this angle, if you need to be so far away from the iPad. I actually bought one (and the Smart Cover) to use it as a support for books/tutorials when I'm coding on my Mac, and I'm finding that I can't find a place for the iPad with the cover on my desk because it ends up to be too steep anywhere I place it...

My experience is the same as yours (and everyone else's, I suppose.)
Other than the various ways you can fold it, Smart Cover is not adjustable.
This link shows what Smart Cover can do.
You have already found the best workaround for Smart Cover: reposition yourself, the iPad, or both so the camera view shows what you want in the picture.
You decide the best location for your iPad while you capture video.  Because iPad connects wirelessly, you need not worry about dangling cables.

  • Does the Smart cover stays on the new iPad?

Does the magnets can stays on the new iPad or are incombatible?

The Smart Cover will stay on the New iPad.  There have been reports that the magnets is some may not turn the screen on and off, but it will certainly fit and provide protection for your screen.

  • How do I turn off the time?  The lock screen appears each time I open the smart cover.

No matter which app I'm in, when I open the smart cover, the lock screen with the time shows.  This is on an iPad Air
On my iPad Mini, it goes right to the app and skips the lock screen.
It's sure nicer not to be reminded what time it is in the middle of the night--and not have the brighter lock screen flashed!

Appreciate the reply.  The settings are identical, so that's not it!  I do not use the pass code lock, in any event.  The behavior I'm describing is, in fact, turns out to be unrelated to the lock settings!
It depends upon whether an alert has occurred after the last time you closed the cover!  In iOS 7, that will show the lock/unlock screen with the alert when you next open the cover.  In iOS 6, more properly, it will show the alert over the screen you were last looking at--no lock screen at all.
On our iPad Mini, iOS 6, we do not use the calendar, so no alerts, and we never see the lock screen or its glaring time (count me among those who would rather not know it's 3am when I decide to read in the middle of the night!)   On the Air, we return to where we left off if there hasn't been an alert--but to the lock screen if there has been one!
Truly wish that Apple would give us options as to displaying the time or not--on the lock screen and on the status bar!
