Identify type of ipod

Guys, I have been given an old ipod with no manuals or paperwork. I'm trying to buy a car cigarette lighter charger for it and thought they would be compatable.
I have just one which didn't work on mine but works on a modern ipod.
So I need to work out what model I have.
I believe its about 6 or 7 years old, maybe more.
I think its a third generation which causes the problem because I get sent stuff for a modern 3rd generation.
Its about 100mm x 70mm white. It has the click wheel with four buttons above.
It has a 20gb drive.
I can find two serial numbers, one on the back U23430JDPNT, and one in the software model M9244B.
Please can someone identify mine and tell me where I can get a working charger.

You seem to be confusing terms.
I think its a third generation which causes the problem because I get sent stuff for a modern 3rd generation.
There is no "modern" 3rd gen full-size iPod, although there is a recent 3rd gen iPod nano (current version of the iPod nano is 4th gen).
Its about 100mm x 70mm white. It has the click wheel with four buttons above.
A "click wheel" is the one that clicks down at the four compass directions (which is why it is called a click wheel). If the wheel is touch sensitive but does not click down and there are four round touch buttons between the wheel and screen, you have a 3rd gen iPod, aka +iPod (Dock Connector)+.
Your charging issue with the 3rd gen iPod is because it was designed to be used with FireWire. It only charges if you connect it with a FireWre docking cable. I believe this is because the voltage between FireWire and USB charging is different (and all current iPods use USB charging). Therefore, you would have to find an old product that was sold back when these iPods and the 4th gen were being sold as new.
Do you have the square white FireWire power adapter that came with those iPods? If you do, or can get one (along with a FireWire docking cable), you can get one of those car lighter adapters that let you plug in regular two-prong power cords. Then just plug in the standard FireWire power adapter.

I have sorted it myself!!
Ipod is now in the top right corner, last time I clicked on it, it ejected it but by clicking on the actual ipod icon then it brings up your ipod. I restored it to factory settings and synced all my music and it now works again. Hope this can help anyone who ends up with the same problem.

Angs78, you purchase music from iTunes on the iPod touch. I know of no way to get music on the Nanao from the tablet.

Someone wanted to sell me a sync and charge USB Cable Cord for iPod Video Nano Mini and I own a regular, full size Ipod (i.e. it is not a nano, shuffle; it is just a regular big ipod). Will this USB cable cord connect and work with my regular ipod?

Just to clarify, you need to be using a third generation or newer full-size iPod to sync over USB, and a fourth or fifth generation iPod to charge from a computer's USB port. The first and second generation full-size iPods can only connect to a computer through FireWire, and do not have any USB ports. You can use the instructions in this article to determine which type of iPod you have.

Need formula to identify type of transaction

I am putting together a report on parts from a transaction table. Each transaction is identified with either a sales order, workorder or purchase order. I need to create a field that will contain an indicator based on which field is filled. Like C for customer order, W=workorder or P=purchase order. So I can group and total by this type.
I can't tell what is missing but I'm either getting a 'W' (on correct records) and blanks for the cust.and purch. order records. Or if I get an error on the formula. I'm thinking its the syntax but can't tell where. Heres an example of what I have for my records.

How do I identify what generation my iPod touch is? The iOS is 5.1.1 and iTunes and the iPod say the software is up to date.

You have a 3rd generation iPod based on the fact that iOS 5.1.1 is the latest version for it.

Using windows 8 - receive message "ipod detected but cannot be identified" when connecting ipod nano 7th gen. Have unisntalled and reinstalled itunes from apple site as advised with no luck. Has anyone else had this problem and resolved it please?

Can't change credit card type on Ipod to set up Itunes account

I'm trying to set up an Itunes account and the Ipod touch won't allow me to select any credit card but Visa... Help!@

If you owe iTunes money then you won't get the 'none' option until you've paid what you owe. What happens when you try to enter your new card's details, if you are getting an error message then what does it say ?
For a card to have a chance of being accepted it needs to be registered to the same name and address (including format and spacing etc) that you have on your iTunes account, and have been issued by a bank in the country where you and your iTunes account are.
