Identifying a fan

trying to identify a fan in my K450E. The fan is about the size of a quarter and is on the underside of what i think is the graphics card. It is still working but has started making a loud motor type noise.

Do you have a fan on your graphics card ?
If you suspect the graphics card, but don't know for sure then temporarily connect the monitor to the on-board VGA port and remove the graphics card.  If the computer is quieter you will know the fan on the graphics card is the problem.

  • X61 fan error - is there a way to identify which fan it is happening from???

My 7675-CTO X61 is giving me a fan error.
I have read the forum and am pretty sure I can replace the fan.
However, how do I figure out which fan is giving me the fan error?
Is there a way to figure this out?
I need to know whether it is the main cooling fan (which is also called the CPU fan and Fansink I believe - correct me if I'm wrong) or the second fan in order to order the appropriate parts for this.
    Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I believe there is no way to tell, but I have found that if there is a second fan, the 2nd (little) one tends to be the problem. I keep a lttle fan around and always try it first because it is much easier to change

  • T60p - CPU Fan Details Needed

A loud humming noise suddenly sounded from my T60p Lenovo Laptop.
I dissassembled it and found that the CPU fan attached to the heat sink has expired.
This looks like a stock fan that can be purchased for less than $10. What type of fan is this?
In reference to the PDF manual on the T60p, the FRU number that matches the correct drawing is 41W0467. On your site it shows a different FRU number.
I am a relatively experienced technician but cannot identify the fan size.
    Anyone?

    Welcome to the forum!
You're unlikely to obtain the information that you're looking for. If you look hard enough, though, you may be able to find the original fan for $25 or so...a wise investment on a $1,000 laptop...

  • Annoying Fan

Hi just got an hp 500-189 a while back.  Now I have this annoying problem with a noisy fan.  It's rather loud, but at some points it does a really annoying one when it switches between a low pitch and a high pitch.  Now I don't want to void the warranty on this so I figure rather than going in and trying to fix it, I'd just identify the fan and ask HP to replace it.  Does anyone know of a way to test each fan to determine which it is?  I have a psu fan, a cpu fan, a case fan, and a gpu fan.  Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi PLung,
Here's information about noisy fans and how to determine which fan is making noise. There are some quick and easy troubleshooting steps you can do yourself if you like before checking on your warranty.
    Hope this helps!

  • Fans on an MBP

When I run widgets or apps like iStat Pro, etc. they all show that they can't find any fans. Is there a problem or are the apps the problem? Also, I used the terminal command to fire up my CPU and the fans only kicked in when it got to 8° before overheating!
**Is there a way to manually turn on the fans, or set it so that the fans kick on earlier?**
Via terminal or console or an app, i DO NOT CARE, this is rediculous. It gets so hot I have to put an ICE PACK on my lap so that I don't get 3rd degree burns!
12" iBook G4, 14" iBook G4, 17" Powerbook G4, 15.4" MacBook Pro     MacBook Pro experiences whine, moo, and chasis issue
12" iBook G4, 14" iBook G4, 17" Powerbook G4, 15.4" MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   MacBook Pro experiences whine, moo, and chasis issue

The current versions of widgets cannot identify the fans in the MBP, so there is no problem there. Your statement about "the fans only kicked in when it got to 8° before overheating" doesn't make sense... You also don't provide us with a lot of information to help you troubleshoot. That said...
    1) Make sure you have applied the latest firmware and SMC updates to your machine; these reduced heat levels markedly on my MBP, and eliminated the "moo" your profile mentions.
    2) If you are experiencing the whine and/or chasis issues (not sure what those are), take the machine to a local Apple retail store (or call AppleCare) and ask them to look at it. A new logic board should eliminate the whine for you (and it is under warranty). My new logic board also lowered my machine's temperature by about 10°C, but your mileage may vary.
    3) The manual specifically warns against using the machine on your lap for long periods of time; it's a notebook computer, not a laptop. Many users (myself included) recommend the iLap from RainDesign.
Good luck. Remember that you don't have to live with the whine -- AppleCare will take care of it. You may need to be a little firm (but polite), but they will do right by you...

  • V210 bad fan - Identify which CPU physically is the one involved

    I have a V210 server.
One of the fans for the CPU's has failed. I want to replace it (have the replacement part) but I don't know physically which CPU is the one that is effected. I have a admin guide, but it doesn't show the internals of the machine, just normal replaceable parts.
    The error:

  • MBP fans @ 6000 rmp when charging

The fans of my 2yr old mac have been going nuts lately (high 5000s/6000s rpm) so after looking into it with iStats I was led to change the battery (last one was health @36% w 157 cycles). Things are now great in terms of not having to keep the laptop plugged 24/7 but the fans still accelerate.
Both fans hover at about 6000 rpm when the cpu is plugged and yes, it does get a very hot on the bottom (laptop kept on solid desk surface only). It doesn't matter what I am running or not running on it at that time. If not plugged- mid 3500s. As soon as I plug it in- bam 6000 rpms, when I unplug back down to the 3000s rpm... the number of programs is irrelevant, and according to the application monitor nothing is "stealing" power so to speak.
I use the laptop a lot and have no other problems with it, but I do need to plug it - I am on it at about 8 hrs a day easily and with a new schedule on the way I plan on being on it even longer. Runs smoothly. I am just worried because I read somewhere that if it fans get over 6500rmp it supposedly would crash. The noise is not pleasant, I am used to my silent mac, but I'll buy earplugs if I have to so long as I don't have to part with it.
What is going? Please, please help.

  • Fan Error 0135

    I have a Think Centre M52.
All the fans a running continiously and on start up I have a fan error 0135.
I have cleaned the two front fans, still no joy , and have now noticed the rear power supply fan is running as well.
I will remove and clean the power supply fan etc.
Any advise if this does not solve the problem of the front fans running full speed?

  • Help me Identify my Model number of Satellite P500

    Hi To All,
Guys I have bought a new toshiba satellite laptop P500 Series. I am having hard time to identify it's complete model number. I have search the internet all over but still haven't found any luck in identifying it. Could anyone please help me in this situation.
    Model : Satellite P500
    Part number : PSPG8U-08F02CB       Operating System : Windows 7 home premium 64bit
I would be very thankful for anybodys help. Thanks in advance.

Thanks a lot for replying. I have everything. I have even made my recovery DVD's. I got it from Dubai. I just wanted to know the specs through it's model number in a bit more detail.
When I bought it even then only it said P500. Just out of curiosity I wanted to ask that can I install a 2nd HDD ??? There is a compartment below I saw....
I wanted to ask also that I hear a sound below the left speaker like if the wings of the fan are touching something !! The sound is barely there but when it is turned on it's audible for 2 secs a bit loud than becomes quite but still is there if listened very very carefully. Just wanted to ask is it something alarming or I should just forget it. Because I love it as it is performing awesomely. No problems what so ever. It runs smoothly. I even updated the BIOS. Although I read in the forums many complaints of people about the P500 & also about the BIOS problem that occured after the update from toshiba service station. Thanks to God my laptop is working smoothly.
I think that the some of the P500's very faulty machinery or hardware or software problems. Just my opinion though. Hope to reading your reply soon. Thanks

  • Lenovo G560 not booting. CPU Fan 100%. No output on screen or VGA

    I have a Lenovo G560
When I power on, the fan is steady for the first 5 seconds, then it spins faster and stays like that. No output from the screen at all.
External VGA does not present any output either. HDD doesn't spin and nor does the light turn on. Removed and reseated memory modules as well as HDD. No change.
Purchased a replacement LCD screen as the current one was cracked the when laptop hit the floor! Therefore I'm thinking something's completely screwed the laptop up or is it a case of a loose connection.
Next thing I was going to try was to disconnect the CMOS battery which would hopefully reset the bios - Can anyone shed any light on this? I believe it's under the keyboard and I have the remove the top chassis. I know that it may be soldered on as well...Any advise or help is appreciated.
    Thanks, Mitesh

    hi mitster,
To access the CMOS battery, you need to remove the keyboard and the top cover. From there, just turn the motherboard over to remove the CMOS battery. (see page 54-57 of the hardware maintenance manual detailed instructions).
If reseating the CMOS battery doesn't give you a display, try to reseat the CPU. If still the same problem, the Intel HD graphics in the processor or the motherboard probably got damaged when the laptop fell into the floor. If you're near a local laptop repair facility, I recommend you take it there to test the motherboard / CPU.
    Hope this helps.

  • Lenovo G560 CPU FAN stop then overheating

Hello i have lenovo G560 after i turn it on a few seconds fan working then definitiveli stops and cpu go overheating and notebook go stutdown.  I try to change CPU fan but issue is there still. Sorry for my poor english. Can anybody tell my what i want to do?

    hi deadbiker,
Overheating problems are commonly caused by evaporated or dried out thermal paste or dirty cooling fan. Since you replaced the fan, I recommend you remove the heatsink and re-apply a thermal compound on the CPU and GPU (if applicable). See page 41 on the Hardware Maintenance Manual on how to remove the heatsink.
If the fan still stops and the unit overheats and shuts down, the CPU might be throttling or might be faulty already. I recommend you send the unit for service (either a local repair shop or thru lenovo since they have diagnostic tools to check the unit out). Support phone list here.
    Hope this helps.
    Cheers

I am trying to identify a problem with my HP Pavillion dv7 laptop
Several months ago it started getting hot and showing messages about problems with the internal fan and battery. It would say enter = shutdown and shut off. I suspected a bad battery so I checked it without it just plugging it in with the power cable. It seemed to work better so I assumed that was the problem.
I ordered a new battery and it worked for a while. The problem came back and is getting worse. I can run it without the battery for a while but it gets got and shows the same message.
I read on here that flashing and updating the bios worked for some but the latest update gives me an error IHISI not support BIOS then Insyde flash not supported.
any help would be great this PC has a lot of info on it and I dont think it is a lost cause

The kernel is using excessive processor cycles. Below are some possible causes for the condition.
    Throttling
When it gets high temperature readings from the hardware, or low voltage readings from the battery of a MacBook, the kernel may try to compensate by interrupting the processor(s) to slow them down and reduce power consumption. This condition can be due to:
☞ a buildup of dust on the logic board
    ☞ high ambient temperature
    ☞ a worn-out or faulty battery in a portable
☞ the malfunction of a cooling fan, a temperature sensor, a voltage sensor, or some other internal component
Note that if the problem is caused by a sensor, there may be no actual overheating or undervoltage.
If the computer is portable, test with and without the AC adapter connected. If kernel_task hogs the processor only on AC power, charging is causing the machine to heat up. That behavior may be normal for some models. CPU usage should drop when charging is complete.
Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test, though not very reliable, is sometimes able to detect a fault. For more thorough hardware testing, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
If nothing is wrong with the hardware, then whatever you can do to improve cooling may help.
    Installed software
User-installed software that includes a device driver or other kernel code may thrash the kernel. That category includes virtualization software, such as Parallels and VMware, as well as most commercial "anti-virus" products. Some system-monitoring applications, such as "iStat," can also contribute to the problem. You can test for this possibility by completely disabling or removing the software according to the developer's instructions, or starting in safe mode. Note, however, that disabling a system modification without removing it or testing in safe mode may not be as easy as you think.
    Corrupt NVRAM or SMC data
Sometimes the problem is cleared up by resetting the NVRAM or the SMC.
    External display
Connecting an external LCD display to some MacBook Pro models while the lid is open may cause this issue. If applicable, test by closing the lid or disconnecting the display. You might get better results with a newer LED display.

  • My macbook pro is lagging, freezing, and fan runs at full blast. How can I fix it?

When I start up my 2010 Macbook Pro now, the fan starts running as soon as the spinning gear appears below the apple logo, the boot up is insanely slow, the mouse doesn't track well with my trackpad movements, and trying to open programs often leads to a non-responsive program with the pinwheel of death spinning for minutes at a time.  I try to shut it down (takes approx. 20 min. now) and when the screen goes black, the fan continues full blast.  After that I can boot up the computer and it runs normally, but the whole process takes about 50 minutes longer than it should, especially with a relatively new SSD (~ 8 months old).  Has anyone seen anything like this before or does anyone know how to fix it?
It loads well enough in safe boot, and I've tried cutting out most of the apps that launch at startup with poor results.  I've also tried resetting the SMC with equally poor results.  I need help!
Here's my Etresoft report as well.

Remove Growl, DiVXHTML and other DIVX software (use MPEG4Streamclip or Smartconverter or Wondershare Videoconverter for videos you need to convert for your own use, and not for giving to others unless you own the copyright for it).  Update your Adobe Flash from http://www.adobe.com/
Shut down  Parallels except when you need to use.  Disable Citrix and your File Sharing for VPN or remote access for Citrix except for when you use remote access.  Find out how to remove Peerguardian.  The Mac has its own firewall which blocks all except ping attacks through Apple menu -> System Preferences -> File Sharing.  Use a hardware router to block ping attacks.  Parallels has its own built-in networking firewall for Parallels itself.

  • Unusual Fan-Speed (up to 6200rpm @ 92°CPU), MBP 2011/ OSX 10.10.2

    Dear Community,
    I've got a problem with my MacBook Pro (late 2011) [2.4 Ghz/ 16GB RAM (upgraded)/ 256 GB SSD (upgraded)/ 500GB HDD (internal, upgraded (instead of DualDrive, iFixit-slot)).
Since last week I am observing that the fan of my Macbook revs up pretty high and pretty quickly up to 92° CPU temperature @ 6200rpm of the fan according to iStats Pro. This can happen in idle as well as load of any kind. I already cleaned the fan. Never experienced it before. Pretty unusual behaviour.
Do you have any suggestions/ guesses/ tips/ help for me? Thank you very much in advance.
Here's a copy of an (Etre)Check that I just recently ran. Hopefully it helps:

Thank you very much for your answer, OGELTHORPE.
I actually did reset the SMC several times the last few days and also observed unusual behaviour by the use of the Activity Monitor – with no result.
The CPU temperature as well as the fan speed can be at a top level without many processes at all. Happened right before I posted my question just after the last start of the system. Of course it also happens when I run a whole bunch of applications, but even in that case it differs. Sometimes it goes up, sometimes it's totally normal. That's why I called it "unusual".
Any further ideas besides the SMC reset?
