Identifying data source

HI all,
How to determine or identify the data source required or which fulfils the User requirement.?
Say User from finance wants a Profit center wise report.
and also he wants to see controlling area,costcenter,payment key ,posting methd.....etc.
If we see in R/3 finance data sources,there are 2,3 data sources in which we can find all the above fields?
But how to check or identify the precise datasource which can be taken into BW for report generation?
Is there any standard particular way to identify a datasource which fulfils our requirement?

If you look at any implementation there is phase for requirement gathering and solution designing ( Business Blue print). The ideal way is get the report requirement from users then look at the ECC data source from functional area perspective. If there is no business user available or not able get the requirements then look for CRP ( Conference room piloting where you activate the complete reporting senarios with sample data and then take the standard delivered reports to business user for feasibility check).
Take a example you mentioning your user interested in profit center report so best way is look at all transactional data sources providing under enterprise profit center. SAP always deliver two types of transactional data sources one for header level/Macro and another for line item level/ detail level. Seat with user and do the feasibility check using RSA2 transaction on ECC side. If you check the profit center reports in finance is wrong. Hence always suggests to seat with business user and SAP functional consultant during requirement gathering and solution workshop. I have seen many failure cases due to this in my last 10 yrs career.
Another way is check all the reports and info providers in help.sap.com>;BI content and do the feasibility check with user requirement before actual BI connect installation. I personally advice don't install the unnecessary objects from meta data repository. Always advisable have the requirement gathering and feasibility/gap analysis study first before moving into actual developments.
I suggest, SAP comes with rich data sources, use the SAP delivered data sources with field enhancements at maximum as per user requirements on top of it. Advisable don't go for entirely generic data source route if possible.

however, I have successfully created connections for MS Access tables, SQL server tables and XML files, but none of them were identified as capable of being shown in a table. I have not been able to successfully create or populate a table from a data source. What am I missing?

Yes, i'm in a important projekt at the moment.
Its also intresting that in an other apex installation (same version) on an other server (same OS) - i'm working a bit longer with - the data load works...
So i dont know any reason for the problem.

bcos i need to create an extraction for a table, view and function module. But iam not sure whether any extractions is already been created for those tables, view, function modules??

By passing the following values as selection to table ROOSOURCE we can find whether any data source has been created or not .
EXMETHOD = V
EXTRACTOR = Table name

How to identify the project in CMOD used for a particular data source

I had a Business Content Data source which is enhanced with ZZ fields and user exit is written in CMOD.
How can i find in which project used to write the code for that particular data source.....

Hi,
One simple way is goto CMOD and give project names with Z* or Y*. First findout the naming convensions following in your project and see.
Then gibe projects one by one and select COMPONENTS option and click on Display, if you find the following Function Exits means it is our DataSource project

Using different data source and connection name

Hi,
We have a requirement where the data source for our application is already configured on the server by name like MyDBDataSource. But the database connection name in our application is like My_DB. So application module is using data source name like My_DBDS. If i change data source name in application module configuration manually to be MyDBDataSource, then it fails at runtime. This has been identified as bug as mentioned in this post

Is this still valid? I am using 11.1.1.6 version. Also want to know if there is any workaround for this ? If i change the name in web.xml at deployment time using script, will it work ?

Is your issue get solved ?
I would like to mention few things about the database connection in application & data source in Weblogic.
1. When you create a database connection in Application (for example say connection name as hr) then in the Application Module Database Configurations in the bc4j.xcfg File Custom JDBCDataSource will be set as <Custom JDBCDataSource="java:comp/env/jdbc/hrDS"/> for both ApplnModule shared & Local. So when you create data source in weblogic it is better to create the JNDI Name like jdbc/hrDS ( ie between the '/' and 'DS' you have to specify the name of database connection you created in the application ).What ever the Data source name is no matter.
2.If you change the JNDI name of data source later like jdbc/hrconnectionDS then it is better to delete the old hr connection from application and recreate a connection as hrconnection. After that you have to edit bc4j.xcfg file in the Application Module--> Configurations and set Custom JDBCDataSource as below for both local & shared config.

Interestingly, after the job fails thru our batch scheduler environment, when I run the same script that's being used in the batch scheduler, the job completes successfully.

The reasons may be the file is open, the format/flatfile structure is not correct, the mapping/transfer structure may not be correct, presence of invalid characters/data inconsistency in the file, etc.
Check if the flatfile in .CSV format.
You have to save it in .CSV format for the flatfile loading to work.
Also check the connection issues between source system and BW or sometimes may be due to inactive update rules.

Unable to find data source

Hi All,
we have installed standard cubes and ODS from Business content. Now we want to load standard ODS but we are unable to identify standard data source.
0CPR_C03 - Infocube.
We have already checked in BI Content and help.sap.com but it doesnot display any data source name.
Kindly give input to find data source.

Now you got some clue, i.e. some datasource names supports the cube.So in that you need to analyze what feilds you want to and in which datasource you have all that feilds in that way you need to use the DS. For any other information you need to check in sap help sites, here I'm giving some tables in BW, so it will help you.

Crystal ActiveX Runtime Lib: Change text data source path at run time.

We have some PCs running Crystal Reports 10 and some running CR 9 and 8.5. For each PC, we set up a System DSN ODBC data source (in Control Panel - Administrative Tools) for pulling data from text files to
generate reports.
Recently we wrote some routines (see the Visual Basic example at the
end of this message) to change the path of the data files at runtime.
According to the Crystal Reports Technical Reference Guide, we may use
the method LogOnServer() of an Application object or an DatabaseTable
object. However, we find that this does not work: the PrintOut()
method only pulls data from the default path as configured for the
System DSN, not from the path passed as the third parameter of
LogOnServer(). It does not return any error message.
We have also tried to use SetTableLocation() method, and it still does
not work.
Would any experts examine our code below and advise what we are missing? Thanks.

for another platform we are using, Unify Vision 4GL, it works for CR

Aging refers to values in different time period ranges. Example, the customer (credit) aging report can look like this.
customer (credit) for current period, 0 to 30 days, 30 to 90 days, 90 to 120 days. This is the way aging is classified.

For P&L information, you may use 0FI_GL_6 datasource (or 0FI_GL_10 if you use ERP 5.0 version). This datasource reads the same information used in R/3 transaction f.01 (table glt0).

Design document is basically a document to say how the design is to be developed for a particular solution ex: FI it says what is the data fow and what are the data targets to be used and how data shld be stored for providing the client a solution they need.
Is cube a data target?

ODBC data source administrator

Hi, I have installed Oracle ODBC driver 10.2.02. I'm trying to add a system data source in System DSN tab in Control panel/administrator tools/data source(ODBC).
In the Oracle ODBC Driver configuration dialog, I select the TNS service name from the drop-down list, ORCL_SALESBOX, which points to the SALESBOX machine where Oracle database rsides.
Specify SH as user ID, then click "Test Connection", then specify its password, then click OK, In a few seconds, the message appears withe following text,
Unable to connect
SQLState=08004
[Oracle][ODBC][Ora]ORA-12154:TNS:Could not resolve the connect identifier speicifed.
I checked the Net Manager, ORCL_SALESBOX is defined as the SALESBOX, with port as 1521, sid as ORCL.
I don't know why the connect identifier could not be resolved by ODBC. I suspect SQL*Net is needed, and am not sure if it's installed at the time my ODBC driver was installed.
Could you shed some light light on this? How do you add data source in ODBC administrator?

Did u first tried to login with this username/password@connct_string on sqlplus or anyother dev tools. If this things works fine then there should be some issues with ODBC driver .

The problem I see is wrong url for jDriver.
you have to say: jdbc:weblogic:oracle
In properties what you need is:

password=
server=
Actually, your connetion pool is not created yet. It has problems. Make sure you create connectionpool successfully
first.

Reports fail when run against a different data source

Hello,
We have a VB.NET 2008 WinForms application running on Microsoft .NET 3.5. We are using Crystal Reports 2008 runtime, service pack 3 -- using the CrystalDecisions.Windows.Forms.CrystalReportViewer in the app to view reports. In the GAC on all our client computers, we have versions 12.0.1100.0 and 12.0.2000.0 of CrystalDecisions.CrystalReports.Engine, CrystalDecisions.Shared, and CrystalDecisions.Windows.Forms.

We were concerned with report display slow down, and we seemed to have solved this by using the Oracle Server driver (instead of either Microsoft's or Oracle's OLEDB driver). But now we must find a resolution to another piece of the puzzle, which is: why does a report break if one data source is embedded in the .rpt file is different than the one you are trying to run the report against, in the .NET Viewer?
Problem:
If you have a production database name (e.g. "ProdDB") embedded in your .rpt file that you built your report from and try to run that report against a development database (e.g. "DevDB") (OR VICE VERSA -- it is the switch that is the important concept here), the report fails with a list of messages such as this:
    Failed to retrieve data from the database
    Details: [Database vendor code: 6550 ]
This only seems to happen if the source of the report data (i.e. the underlying query) is an Oracle stored procedure or a Crystal Reports SQL Command -- the reports run fine against all data sources if the source is a table or a view). In trying different things to troubleshoot this, including adding a ReportDocument.VerifyDatabase() call after setting the connection information, the Crystal Reports viewer will spit out other nonsensical errers regarding being unable to find certain fields (e.g. "The field name is not known), or not able to find the table (even though the source data should be coming from an Oracle stored procedure, not a table).
When the reports are run in the Crystal Reports Designer, they run fine no matter what database is being used; but the problem only happens while being run in the .NET viewer. It's almost as if something internally isn't getting fully "set" to the new data source, or something -- we're really grasping at straws here.
For the sake of completeness of information, here is how we're setting the connection information

... alas, it makes no difference. If we run the report against a database that is different than the one specified with "Set Datasource Location" in Crystal, it fails with nonsense errors

Thanks for the reply, Ludek. We have made some breakthroughs, uncovered some Crystal bugs and workarounds, and we're probably 90% there I hope.
For your first point, unfortunately the information on the Oracle 6550 error was generic, and not much help in our case. And for your second point, the errors didn't have anything to do with subreports at that time -- the error would manifest itself even in a simple, one-level report.
However, your third point (pointing us to KB 1553921) helped move us forward quite a bit more. For the benefit of all, here is a link to that KB article:

We downloaded the tool referenced there, and pointed it at a couple of our reports. The bottom line is that the code it generated uses a completely new area of the Crystal Reports .NET API which we had not used before -- in the CrystalDecisions.ReportAppServer namespace. Using code based on what that RasConnectionInfo tool generated, we were able gain greater visibility into some of the objects in the API and to uncover what I think qualifies as a genuine bug in Crystal Reports.
The CrystalDecisions.ReportAppServer.DataDefModel.ISCRTable class exposes a property called QualifiedName, something that isn't exposed by the more commonly-used CrystalDecisions.CrystalReports.Engine.Table class. When changing the data source with our old code referenced above (CrystalDecisions.Shared.ConnectionInfo.SetConnection), I saw that Crystal would actually change the Table.QualifiedName from something like "SCHEMAOWNER.PACKAGENAME.PROCNAME" to just "PROCNAME" (essentially stripping off the schema and package name). Bad, Crystal... VERY BAD! IMHO, Crystal potentially deserves to be swatted on the a** with the proverbial rolled-up newspaper.
I believe this explains why we were also able to generate errors indicating that field names or tables were not found -- because Crystal had gone and changed the QualifiedName to remove some key info identifying the database object! So, knowing this and using the code generated by the RasConnectionInfo tool, we were able to work around this bug with code that worked for most of our reports ("most" is the key word here -- more on that in a bit).
So, first of all, I'll post our new code. Here is the main area where we loop through all of the tables in the report and subreports:

Objects are not referenced in cube data source view. Large model.

Looking at large model. 100+ measure groups, 200+ dimensions, one cube. Deployed to multiple customers in production as a part of custom developed software.
in data tools 2010 I'm looking at the cube on sql 2008, sql 2008 R2 (EE, DE).
In the cube data source diagram we observe 50+ objects that do not have any links to them or from them.

Some of these I was unable to find in DMV's of the cube at all, it turns out they are present in the Data source that is in Data Source Views section.
How did these end/could end up in the cube data source model? they are not available in dimension usage window at all.
2) Others do not have any links from them or to them in cube’s data source diagram, however the dimension usage clearly shows these objects are part of relationships
both regular and many to many depending on the object in question.
We are trying to identify what objects we can ‘trim’ from the model. I’m not sure what am I looking at in this case: data tools have a trouble interpreting diagram for 200+ dimensions and
100+ measure groups (it is a large existing model) and this artifact should not be used to decide what in dimensions is obsolete and can be decommissioned.
We are looking at cube that has over 40 NxM just to one fact not counting regular relationships.
Am I looking at a feature or maybe an issue with the model itself that somehow has developed in the particular cube.
It is not something I came across before.

According to your description, you are designing a large SQL Server Analysis Services cube, the problem is that you are unable view the relationship in the data source
view diagram, right?
In your description, you said that you can see the relationships in Dimension Usage window. In your scenario, can you see the relationship under the Tables pane when expanding
a table's Relationships folder?
General, the relationships will be defined automatic if the relationships were defined in your data source of the cube. And the dimension relationships between cube dimensions
and measure groups in the cube are defined manually in Dimension Usage. In your scenario, you can define relationship manually in the data source view, please refer to the link below to see the details.

ORA-06550/PLS-00201 error while configuring data source

Hi,
My development platform is Visual Studio 2005, ODAC11g Release 1 (11.1.0.6.20), and Oracle 10g Release 2 database.
I tried to setup a sqlDatasource in my web page using drag and drop features
When I configure the sqlDatasource to use a stored procedure inside a package,
I notice that odp.net uses #0# as separator (instead of .) between package name and procedure name in Configure Data Source dialog box. Then when I clcik the Test Query button, I got following error.
There was an error executing the query. Please check the syntax of the command and if present, the types and values of the parameters and ensure they are correct.
ORA-06550: line 1, column 7:
PLS-00201: identifier 'PK_LOOKUP_TABLE#0#P_LIST' must be declared

PL/SQL: Statement ignored
It looks like odp.net cannot locate PK_LOOKUP_TABLE#0#P_LIST.
Is there any workaround ?

On the sqlDataSource property sheet, if I click the Select Query property, the Command and Parameter Editor will open, then I can change the select command name to PK_LOOKUP_TABLE.P_LIST. Then if I run the application, I get another error.

Seems that it can locate the procedure.
In the Command and Parameter Editor dialog, I can add output parameter, but data type is restricted. There is no REF CURSOR datatype in the dropdown list.
How can I add output parameter with REF CURSOR type via IDE ?
