IDES vs. Discovery System
Hi,
What are the differences between SAP Discovery System and IDES? For example, does Discovery system include all standard SAP transactions (like IDES includes) etc.? Can we create our own scenarios or do we have to use only preconfigured ones?
Br,
Hannu
Edited by: Hannu Alakangas on Feb 1, 2008 7:27 PM
Hi Hannu,
The SAP Discovery System's ERP (SAP ECC 6.0) is configured using the SAP Best Practices Baseline (in v2.0 we have the baseline for ECC5.0 and in v3.0 we have the baseline for ECC6.0) offering for the US. The master data etc. is provided by SAP Best Practices, not IDES. Therefore IDES data is not in the system but only data needed for our specific scenarios is there.
IDES and SAP Best Practices vary significantly.
First, the SAP Best Practices is delivered with an implementation configuration set, not just as a reference. This means that all of the configuration settings are captured into BC sets that can be activated in a new system, captured in transports and transported from Dev to QA and Production.
Additionally, the Best Practices have accompanying configuration guides so that if someone were to use the system as a reference and wanted to know what configuration was activated in the system, they would be able to find out.
SAP Best Practices is fully reusable content either for sandbox, prototype, development, or production. Each SAP Best Practice may have either an industry or cross-industry focus which will help the customer for blueprinting. In the case of the Discovery System, we used our most generic ERP offering, "Baseline".
IDES on the other hand is a fully configured reference system which may have process documentation, but the configuration is not delivered in a way that can be transported outside of a sandbox environment.
Hope that clarifies.

[Demo] Differences between IDES, Sneak Preview, ES Discovery Systems
Hi,
It has become quite complicated to navigate between all the demo systems
<i>As shown in this post, for instance
https://forums.sdn.sap.com/click.jspa?searchID=835708&messageID=2043010</i>
<i>Have also a look at this thread:
Downloading IDES software
There is major problems I think, knowing:
- <b>what exactly are the functionalities</b> (and consequently, what audience is targeted) provided by Sneak Preview (SDN), IDES systems (through Software Catalog), ES Discovery systems (I am sure I am missing some of them).
<i> For instance, IDES offer functional modules and Sneak preview doesn't</i>
- <b>what level of partnership is needed</b> (none [for instance for products available in the SDN Download section] to get those sustems, SAP Partner for IDES, SAP Global Partner for Software Catalog)
- <b>what is the trial period</b> (if any) : is it possible to renew the license, if yes for how long...
If I have made mistakes, feel free to correct me, that's the whole point of this post.
I think a blog or a Wiki could help hundreds of people !
Best regards,
Guillaume

IDES contains a complete ERP with data of a fake company (IDES), as otherwise you had to spend weeks to implement this to do any useful things in an ERP.
> - <b>what level of partnership is needed</b> (none
> [for instance for products available in the SDN
> Download section] to get those sustems,
All SDN downloads only need SDN membership, which is available to anybody signing up.
> for IDES, SAP Global Partner for Software Catalog)
IDES is only available to customers and partners and this depends on the country you live in. There is no IDES download on SDN.
> - <b>what is the trial period</b> (if any) :
All trial periods are 90 days for legal reason. I know we did different in the past, but had to change this.
>is it
> possible to renew the license, if yes for how
> long...
Because of the legal reason trial licenses are not intended to be renewed. Nevertheless, as we usually provide new downloads every 6 month or so question is when such rights end, as new downloads renew the evaluation period. Well, the intention is to inform you guys about our software and that is what you essentially do with it (for the most part).

I'll see if I can do something like that... but not before easter.

Future Version of the SAP Enterprise SOA Discovery System
Hi,
what happens, if a new version of the system is available. I understood, that the system can be patched and new components can be installed. Do I have to buy a new box or can I make an update?
Would it be possible to add a image of the complete system to the distribution, so the system can easily be reset after something went wrong?Hi,
it's currently a bit early to talk about future versions of the Discovery System. Nothing is finally decided yet.
The applications on the Discovery System can be patched and upgraded as any other SAP software installation. And you are free to add software to the system.
Shipping an image is a nice idea. I am not aware if HP is not shipping that already.

I can't figurate how to list all the root directories

I know how to recursively check the content of a

do is actually give the option to pick one of the
root directories to start the iteration. I have been

above objective some clarification would be really

Discovery System: Problems with exposing RFC as web service
We have a version 2 discovery system and have successfully implemented the three exercises from the TechEd workshop (Sales Order Distribution, Creating a PO Store Record WS, Adding a New Step to the Procurement Scenario with SAP CAF GP). It seems to work fine except for two issues with the RFC/WS:
1) The RFC, and therefore the WS, always returns an empty string instead of the 'X' that the documentation shows in Step 4.h. We checked the RFC itself and it looks like it has an error with the price field; it always appends a blank to the end of the price string and then errors.
2) The created web service does not show up on the Web Services Navigator page. Since the instructions tell you to save the URL to the WSDL, we can find the web service and test it, but you cannot find it on the Navigator page.
Neither of these problems are huge, but they make me worry that something is not quite right in the Discovery System and we may end up with larger problems later. Any ideas what could cause these two problems, and how to fix them?
Thanks, Eric

ERIC HAMERHi Eric,
First of all let me assure you that your system is perfectly fine and both topics that you have raised are the way the system is suppose to respond.
1. The reason that the service is returning a null is because you are entering the same input parameters more than once. Since some of the parameters are used as primary key's in the database, you will need to change them in order to successfully store the data.
2. The reason that you don't see the service in the Navigator page is because this service resides in the ERP and not in WebAS. Only services deployed on the WebAS will appear in the Web Service Navigator page.

Availability of the SAP Discovery System for Enterprise SOA
Hello Everybody,
will the SAP Discovery System for Enterprise SOA only be avaliable as a appliance as I've read on NetWeaver04s on Discovery System? Will there be a normal installation like a IDES System?
Perhaps a good idea for a quick start would be a peinstalled Linux Based VMWare Image :-).
Regards
GregorHi Gregor,
among the reasons for shipping the Discovery System as an appliance are legal reasons. So as long as there are 3rd party components involved (from SAP perspective) you'd need to be an official distributor for them. Obviously this restriction applies to VMWare Images as well.
An IDES-like installation is facing the challenge of integrating multiple components (that normally have to be installed separately) and their configuration data during the set-up already. This can be done as the example of Rapid Installer shows. But it is certainly more work to accomplish it.
As always: Making a complex system easy to use/set-up requires extended efforts behind the scenes. So it is always necessary to find the trade-off between "time to market" and "plug-and-play". So currently the availability as appliance is a compromise of both.

How do I get the Discovery System?
Hi everyone
I've seen quite a few topics on the Discovery System v3 lately, and it seems like something I would like to deploy for playing around with new ideas... but I can't find where to get it.
I know it's available directly from hardware manufacturers (e.g. HP offer it packaged with their DL* server), but is it also available in just software form? I don't really need new hardware, but would like the system.
I've checked on the SAP Software Distrubution Centre on the support portal, but can't find it for download or delivery.
Can someone point me in the right direction here please?
Thanks!
StuartHaving purchased the HP Discovery Server Bundle, I can attest to the power of software and hardware together in this package. Getting up and running is almost plug-and-play, which jump started my company's ability to get going with SAP testing, almost immediately.
The configuration and installation of SAP discovery server looks to be incredibly time consuming. Not to mention, that the requirements to run database and NetWeaver on one box, would require you to have a box sized pretty much according to the specifications of the SAP HP unit (12 gigs of RAM, eight cores, plenty of disk, partitioned intelligently).
Yes, I have to agree that the SAP Discovery server is a great value as a hardware/software package. -
SQL Server 2005 collation type for the Discovery System?
Greetings,
The SQL Server 2005 Eval 180 day license expired on our Discovery System. I un-installed the Eval copy and installed a licensed SQL Server 2005 EE instance. I searched for the SQL Server collation, and found SAP Note 600027, which recommended Binary order for use with the 850 Multilingual Character Set as the collation.
I attached the existing databases using the script provided with the Discovery system. Started up the SAP ERP instance. I then tried to log into the ERP 300 and got a START_CALL_SICK error message. From the error message details I find, "DB CHECK Wrong Server collation. Perform SQL2005 after upgrade steps. Please see note 126973". Note 126973 seemed to refer me to note 799058. However this talks about upgrading....
It appears to me I simply chose the wrong SQL Server 2005 collation type when installing the licensed coipy of SQL Server.
What collation type should be used?
Thanks,
Jay WarlingAfter reviewing what I did, it appears I neglected to detach the databases before un-installing SQL Server 2005 evaluation copy.
I did stop the ERP system via the SAP MMC before un-installing but did not detach the databases.
I believe the collation is actually correct, but I am stumped as how to proceed with the START_CALL_SICK error message.
Any ideas?
Thanks,

Multiple Discovery Systems on the same network
Is anybody successfully running more than one DS on the same network? We have edited the hostname of the DS but their still seems to be a conflict between the two servers and the SID names cannot be the same as well.
Hi Phillip,
The changing of the hostname is not recommended by SAP, but there is a customer who succeeded in doing so and claims to have even connected 4 Discovery Systems to the same network.
Knowing Maxim, I believe he indeed achieved it.
Read his blog: /people/maxim.efimov2/blog/2007/05/07/how-to-change-hostname-on-sap-enterprise-soa-discovery-system
My only tip: make a backup of the systems before you make any significant changes.
Regards,
Itai -
I am interested in getting the Discovery system. I want to use it as a means of exploring the SAP functionality for my organization. We are a cargo airline and would like to explore if SAP is a good fit for our Aircraft Maninenace, repair and Overhaul module (MRO) as well scenarios in Finace , SD and MM.
I am not interested in learning about SOA except as a by product, but to evaluate the functionality of the different modules like GRC, Solution Manager and XI.
Is it possible to configure things given I have the proper SAP license ? What kind of a license would I need ?
Information is difficult to come by even from HP itself or SAp.
Please respond.Hi Anju,
In general: Of course you can use the Discovery system to evaluate whatever software or functionality is installed on the box. So this is definitely true for the ERP modules, GRC, Solution Manager and XI as mentioned below. The DS comes with full administrative rights making it possible for you to configure anything you want (having a backup in place is advised).
Licensing:
You need to have an SAP ERP or SAP Business Suite license in place to activate the Discovery system. This will give you the chance to evaluate the software and components on the system for a maximum of up-to 6 month (for those components you don't have licensed yet). However customer specific licensing is somewhat unique. Therefore it is advised to contact your SAP account manger or sales representative to find out about your specific situation in detail.
Hope that helps,

Sanity check ... CRM is not included in Discovery System?
Hi -
We have installed the SAP Discovery System - and I had been assuming that CRM was included - but it looks like it's not. Is this correct? Just want to make sure that I'm not missing something obvious -
Thanks,
MichelleHi Mike,
technically I'd presume yes. However hardware resources are limited on the box and it might not meet your expectations from a performance perspective. Unfortunately I personally haven't heard of somebody doing that. So I can't tell you what to expect.
Whatever you decide to do: Please make sure to have a working backup in place before making major changes to the system.
