Idiot's guide to FMS

I have a number of video and audio files that I want placed
on my site. My web designer know how to generate swf and flv files
but doesn't know any scripting or coding.
I came across FMS which seems to be the answer to everything
so I downloaded and installed it on a Windows server. I've been
trying for 3 days to get it to work.
All documentation deals with scripting on server or client.
Is there a beginner's guide? As I said: I want to put the flv
file in a folder and stream it to web clients. I don't want a live
stream, interactive stuff, webcam or such. Just stream a simple
file.
Any help would be appreciated.

First of all you need to have a VPN server to connect to.
Do you want to connect to an existing VPN server or run a VPN server on your mac?
I will assume you want to vpn from your iphone back to your mac at home.
There is a VPN server included with leopard however there is only a GUI for it in Leopard Server.
If you dont have Leopard Server you can use iVPN
Then you need to configure your router to allow vpn traffic into your network.
What is the make and model of your router?
here is a list of well known ports used by Apple Software products.
It list the ports you need to open on your router for VPN and l2TP.
You need to give your mac a fixed IP address. Then forward the relevant ports from your router to the IP address of your mac.
Then if your ISP does not give you a static Public IP address you need to get a dynamic domain name from http://dyndns.com
regarding a vpn client for your iphone there are dozens available from the App store I cant recommend one as I have not fully evaluated any of them.
However browse the iphone forum iphone networking

My ipad 1 has never been updated and can't run many apps which makes it of not much use, how do I update it ? A simple step by step idiot proof guide would be best ! Can anyone help please ?

You can only update the iPad to iOS 5.1.1and you cannot go any higher. If you never updated that high, you can do so by using iTunes on your computer. You will have to connect the iPad to your computer with the cable and launch iTunes
You can read more here. Make sure that you read the section about using iTunes. The article starts off with using the Settings on the iPad for WiFi updates. That only works with the iPad 2 and higher that is already running iOS 5.

  • Does anyone have an idiot proof guide to building a G4 Cube ?

I have (nearly/I think) all the parts to put together a G4 cube, incl. PSU, case. What I don't know is HOW to put it together. Is there an "ifixit" equivalent out there, that anyone knows of ?

The Apple service guide does not mention that a plastic rail is attached to the side of the Internal drive opposite the heatsink, and slides along a track inside the chassis. This ebay item pictures it (and the heatsink):
eBay Apple G4 Cube Hard Drive Heatsink and Mounting Rail
Anything that fastens to the side of the drive and encourages it to slide along the track while installing and damping out potential vibration while operating will do the trick.

  • Idiot's Guide to iBook Backup

Is there anywhere I can find a recommended guide on how to backup my iBook? Do I just need to back up my documents / pictures / music etc. or do I need to back up system files or anything like that? Any help would be appreciated.

easiest way to backup is to external FireWire drive, which also can be used to boot the machine if needed.
first you can do a full back up and copy everything over by using restore feature in Disk Utility - it will make exact copy of the drive.
make sure back up worked, after that you can simply copy over any new documents etc. as needed.
with backups it's important to veify that back up actually
worked as expected and all files were saved properly.

  • ITunes, Apple TV, a NAS drive and Time Capsule - an idiot's guide

    Hi,
I really need some help, and even though I know the information is already on the web, I just need someone to tell me what to do in my circumstance.
I have a new Macbook with 250GB hard drive which is now almost full! I have an Apple TV box which is also almost full. I have a 320GB Iomega NAS which is not almost full as I haven't really used it properly and I have just got a 1TB Time Capsule as I'm petrified of losing everything!
I have just over 175GB of music and films/tv programmes. I have also just finished making sure all the album artwork is correct (I know - very sad!).
Currently the entire library is on my Macbook. I backed it up to the NAS drive (although I did it via a USB connection rather than over my home network).
With only about 23GB of space left on my Macbook I decided the time was right to use the NAS properly. (I only really want to use the Time Capsule as a back up, although I guess there is probably a problem there as well if I move everything of importance (i.e. the music and films) to the NAS but lets leave that one for the time being.
Basically what I want to know is how to use itunes with the NAS so that the music and films etc are stored on the NAS but not the rest of the information (the itunes database and album art folders).
I tried it before and it kind of worked but the first time it update the library file and having just sorted out all the album artwork I don't want to have to do it again.
I should say that I am the only one in the house who uses itunes, my laptop, am the only one with an ipod and iphone, so there is no issue with someone sharing the library or anything like that.
So, question 1 - how do I set up itunes to work with the NAS.
Question 2 - in doing so, will I have to correct all the artwork again?
Question 3 - if all the music etc is on the NAS, how do I back it up to the Time Capsule?
A more complicated question is can I keep the music on my laptop and films/tv programmes on the NAS?
Will all of this make the Apple TV box stop working?
Finally, I have already found an apple script which automounts the NAS and then starts itunes as I have read that that can cause a problem.
    Thanks for any/all your help.
    Anthony

There isn't a solution, the Apple TV will only read your iTunes library if iTunes is running and will only play content through iTunes.

  • Need an "iTunes podcast and Feedburner - Idiot's Guide" Any Advice??

I currently have a podcast (iTunes Store link: http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=211068389 )
That I would like to track activity and subscribers. I understand that FeedBurner seems to be the popular choice and I would like to go with it. Now the problem is I've scoured that site and I cannot seem to find a definitive "walk-through" that describes the process. I've also googled this topic and cannot seem to find a text I understand (I figured this whole podcasting out on my own after a LOT of headaches and foul-ups).
Does anyone know of a solid walk-through description of how to redirect the podcast feed through FeedBurner and make sure that iTunes still allows subscriptions, updates, etc...
I just don't want to goof up along the way and inadvertantly take down my podcast in the process.
    Thanks!!

  • Upgrading from 5 to 7. An Idiot's Guide needed

When I first got my Mac, it was just on the cusp of OSX. So it came loaded with OSX and OS9. The shop I got all the kit from set everything up on OS9 with Logic 5 working via OMS.
Now, this has worked fine (apart from a few lack of memory problems) but it's time to move on.
So, I upgraded to Tiger and I've bought the upgrade from Logic 5 (Big Box version) to Logic 7 pro.
Obviously I need more memory, although I'm not sure how much, but what are the practicalities to make sure it works when I first fire it up?
What happens to my old favorite VST's?
    Virtual Guitarist, Groove Agent, Stylus,
    My battered old Edirol Orchestral?
I write for TV regularly so I can't afford to have much down-time.
Please someone tell me it'll be OK....
    Cheers
    Rod

OMS was very popular for Mac OS 9 because it managed your MIDI ports and abstracted the software/MIDI relationship to where all we needed to know were the names of the ports, rather than port numbers and stuff like that.
Apple's CoreMIDI structure in Mac OS X is based on OMS (Doug Wyatt, the developer of OMS, works for Apple and has been the primary developer behind CoreMIDI).
If you are still planning to dual boot from OS9, you will use OMS there. However, as far as OS X goes, everything you need is built in and accessed from the Audio MIDI Setup utility.

  • Idiot's guide needed...streanming music

Would like to stream music from my Mac to home theater, as well as internet radio.
If using an AXpress, how do you control the selection to be played ?
Does the computer need to be running? iTunes open?
    thanks, folks for any info.
(the Mac is connected to a router with wireless capabilities. And I use the wireless to connect my laptop to internet.)

Hello D Bruce. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Would like to stream music from my Mac to home theater, as well as internet radio.
You'll be able to stream audio files, but not movie audio, from iTunes to the AirPort Express Base Station (AX). To stream movie audio & other audio sources not available from iTunes, you will need a third-party solution, like Rogue Amoeba's Airfoil.
If using an AXpress, how do you control the selection to be played ?
Song selection would be controlled through iTunes.
Does the computer need to be running? iTunes open?
Yes, and yes. iTunes, uses AirTunes, to both connect and stream audio to the AX. iTunes would have to be running for this to work ... or if using Airfoil that would have to be running instead.

  • Idiot's Guide?

OK, I have easy link that doesn't work with Vista which I also have.  Router is WRT54GS.  PC is a Sony Vaio laptop.
Yeah, I know how to go to 192.168.1.1 and set up the router.  IU can create an unsecured network.
When I enable security via the IP mode of router installation the encryption key is hidden.  It cannot be copied and pasted.  That means when I go to my pc to access the net I don't have an encryption key.
So it appears that I have a choice between an unsecured network or an ethernet connection in which case the router is completely unnecessary.
Surely there has to be some way around this.  Step by step instructions please.
And don't tell me to download the latest firmware.  Done that.  Twice.  Converted it to an ISO file and tried to burn the image.  Keep getting error messages.
Vista ain't exactly fresh out anymore.  Have to wonder why software doesn't support this OS.
    Very unhappy with this equipment.

please let me know the hardware and the firmware version number of the router .. i think that the firmware is not upgraded properly .. so try upgrading the firmware through tftp.exe .. here , the server is router's ip add , password is router's password , browse the firmware file and click upgrade . after the upgrade , reset and reconfigure the router

  • Ipod Mini Help - Need Idiot's Guide to Set Up

Help! I got an ipod mini for Xmas from my boyfriend. He loaded 500 songs onto my ipod from his ibook. However as we've split up I haven't really used it but I'm going travelling for a year (this weekend-nothing like being prepared...!) and would like to take it with me and set up play lists etc.
I haven't even connected my ipod to my laptop as I've heard that when you connect to it/itunes that yr ipod contents can be wiped if you are already registered with another PC/Mac. So basically I don't know what order I have do stuff so that I can get some tunes I like rather than listening to ex-boyf's taste in music.
Hope this makes sense - never posted on this before and am a bit of a technophobe.

  • Idiots guide to clean install upgrade to Snow leopard to get lion

Hi- am a total novice and have had my Imac 9,1 (2.93 Ghz Duo core processor with 4GB RAM) for a couple of years and now I am on MAC OS 10.5.8 Leopard and really want to get ready for Lion when it comes. My Imac has an external hard drive (250GB) and a time machine, airport for itunes for music streaming,  some Microsoft office suite. I bought the Snow Leopard 10.6.3 yesterday and want to clean install without losing all my docs and settings for all iphones/ipods etc. Anyone got an idea where I can find an idiot proof guide to doing this? I guess I will need to do this all again once Lion is available
    Help much appreciated...

first of all, make a backup of your boot drive by cloning it to an external HD using e.g. Carbon Copy Cloner.
then simply pop in the install DVD and click on continue. the SL installer will upgrade OS X and leave everything untouched (unless it's incompatible) - it's that simple.
in case something does go wrong, you have your clone.

  • Please me a give full idiot proof instruction of how I download elements 13

I'm in the UK &  have just paid for Photo elements 13 & premier elements 13 . It's supposedly easy to down load from the Adobe cloud.
I've followed the download trails to the letter ( hopefully)
They show in my down load folders as being in my computer but I can't find out how to open them for use .
As far as I can see there is no help desk FAQ's info for the cloud version of things .
Can any one give me an idiot proof guide to down loading and opening them  by way of a dummies You Tube guide or   page details  within Adobes hidden vaults ?
If this fails , can these programmes be obtained on good old honest CD's from Adobe & if so how ?
    Dave

You can download from these links:
    <Download Photoshop Elements products | 13, 12, 11, 10>
    <Download Premiere Elements products | 13, 12, 11, 10>
These are trial versions but they become full versions as soon as you enter your serial number(s) and activate them online.
    Good luck.

  • Beginner Guide for developing GUI for Pocket PC

    Hi all,
I have been developing Advanced Swing GUI for seven years now.
The time has come to write some to Pocket PC, and it doesn't look good.
I've searched the net for a mere beginners-guide and found nothing
there is no single A-to-Z tutorial which will tell you what to download and how to write you first program.
I am offering 15 Duke dollars for the kind member that will be kind enough to write a short "idiot's guide for writing a little gui app for pocket pc" post, including exactly what to download, how to configure, and what to write.
Such post would help me and the rest greatly
    Thank you very much

Guide to installing and using CrE-ME JVM on a Handheld device:
Step A: Where to download the CrE-ME JVM from?
    1. NSIcom.com has a 30-day free trail version of CrE-ME JVM and can be downloaded from the following link by clicking on Download Free Evaluation:
    http://www.nsicom.com/Default.aspx?tabid=159
    The version I downloaded was CrE-ME 4.1
    2. To download additional specific packages for applications that use SWING, RMI, etc. Click on View all downloads and download from the packages listed.
    Step B: Installing the JVM.
    1. Connect the device to a desktop.
    2. Install the CrE-ME version downloaded as you install any other application on your desktop.
    3. While installing, the installer program will ask if you want to install at the default location or to specify a path. (I guess installing to the default location will make life easier). Therefore, the JVM will be installed on the handheld device.
    4. Copy the additional packages downloaded to "\Windows\CrEme\lib" directory on the handheld device. Double click on the package (.CAB) file and it will configure itself.
    5. Test the sample applications given in \Windows\CrEme\demos\ to check the proper installation of the JVM.
    Step C: Executing your applications.
    C.1 Method 1
    1. Write and compile the program in any IDE but remember to compile the programs with jdk1.4 as CrE-ME 4.1 supports JDK 1.4 or earlier.
    2. Create a jar file of your application.
    3. Write a link file (.lnk), specifying the classpath and the CrEme exe file in the following format:
    255#"\Windows\CrEme\bin\CrEme.exe" -Of -classpath <full JAR file path> <main class name>
    Ex: 255#"\Windows\CrEme\bin\CrEme.exe" -Of -classpath \My Documents\Menu.jar Menu
-Of is used to redirect the console output to be redirected to jscpout.txt file located in the root directory of your device. Use -Ob if you are using a console based application.
255 specifies the number of characters in the file, but instead of counting the characters you can use 255 which is the maximum (in general, it is seen that a higher value works but not a number less than the number of characters)
Also note that the classpath is in single quotes
    4. Copy the link file to the handheld device and then double click on the link file to run the application and if the application doesnt show up, you know where to look for the errors. The jscpout.txt file created in the root folder of your device due to the Of parameter used in the link file, will contain the console output and thus the errors.
    C.2 Method 2
    1. Write and compile the program in any IDE but remember to compile the programs with jdk1.4 as CrE-ME 4.1 supports JDK 1.4 or earlier.
    2. Create an executable jar file of your application using the Manifest.mf file to specify the main class.
    Ex: Main-Class: <main class name>
Also remember to hit the return (enter) key at the end of manifest file.
    3. Copy the jar file to the handheld device and double click on it to execute.
    4. In case the output doesnt show up, it could mean that there were errors executing the application and to check for errors use Method 1.

  • I have a current iPhone 5 with all my apps and games at certain levels, how do I use iCloud to transfer current game levels as only a few games have transferred and other games want me to start all over again on my new iPad?

I currently have an iPhone 5 that I play games on regularly and I have just bought the iPad 4 and I want to transfer all my game progress from the iPhone to the iPad. I have turned on iCloud on both devices and backed up and while all my games transfer only some of the games maintain progress where others want me to start all over again. I pretty sure I doing something wrong... Can some help or give me idiot proof guidance on how do do this successfully. I'm generally pretty tech savvy but this has me stumped and iCloud is ment to be easy to use.

I would not be able to give you idiot proof guide, since different games are different. Some of them have icloud integrated already, but those already taken care of. Some of them use specific logins and once you log - you get your info. General recommendation is to contact support sites of those games for enabling icloud instructions or enabling of transfer. There are other purely apple ways - like sync your phone in itunes and then sync apps with ipad, but those are only one time transfer. There is another way that is not typically recommended - restoring ipad from iphone backup. It may transfer your game content, but once again sync in the future has to be done by game.
So if I were you, I would address that individually with every game provider.

  • How do I set up multiple e-mail and iCloud accounts on an iPad?

    Hello everyone,
I have just purchased an iPhone and an iPad, and have upgraded to Mavericks - and that was only a week ago, so the workings of the cloud are not overly familiar with me yet.
I have just discovered to my dismay that unlike my iMac and Macbook, the iPad does not support accounts - or multiple users - in the Mac sense, although looking at the manual and the forums I believe it might be possible to do things another way, but all the postees have more experience of the devices and the cloud than I do.
What am I trying to get the iPad to do?
My use is fairly mixed, but mostly web browsing and music and some Apple TV. I do not have my regular e-mail address joined to the cloud, and don’t want to, as nearly all my e-mails are work based, and I don’t want those on a private device. My new iCloud e-mail address will do for friends at some point.
My wife surfs the web, uses e-mail, and Facebook. She would like all her content private, so I would expect some sort of password usage, or signing in and out of iCloud, or at least certain aspects of it like Mail. I’m not bothered about mine being kept private, and I expect my usage to be light. She does not have an Apple id or iTunes account.
I know you can put more than one e-mail address on there, and the menu on the iPad suggests I can add more than iCloud account?
Unfortunately, this is all a bit of a jigsaw puzzle and I feel I’m missing a few pieces.
Can some kind soul tell me if what I want to achieve is possible, and if it is, I would really appreciate an idiot’s guide on how to achieve this.
    Many thanks in advance.

Now I feel kind of stupid, or maybe I need new glasses. I did not see the get an new account link, just kept going back into my primary account. Thank you for your time and help.
