Idiots guide to audiobooks

Is anyone aware of an idiots guide to using audiobooks ?
I have just started with this and so far am finding dificulties in loading tracks into the audiobook section. At the moment they keep going into the music section and as my immediate priority is books I am ignoring music.
I also experience difficulty in hearing the books as once a section of say 17 tracks ends it goes back to the begining. If I am listening to say disk 6 on completion it goes back to 5 and restarts from there instead of advancing on to disk 7.
Can anyone please set me on the right road ?

  • Idiots guide to connecting xp pro to os 10.2 server?

Anyone have a link for an idiots guide to connecting an xp pro pc to a 10.2 server? I try to use xps network setup - \\servername\foldername hit enter then it asks for a user name and password. I enter our generic building wide user name & pw, it thinks for a while then just pops back up looking for user name & pw. Are there any things in xp that I have to turn on/off for this to work etc?

10.2 is now seriously dated and will be quite problematic because it's significantly different in many respects from 10.3 and 10.4, making it harder for those with experience with them (10.3 and 10.4) to effectively help.
If you can at all, I'd try to find a copy of 10.3 Server to purchase.
Otherwise... you need to setup "Password Server" in 10.2 Server (not running by default) to properly support Windows users. Anything else will be pain.
And then each Windows user will need to have their password type set to "Password Server" in the “User Password Type popup (see Workgroup Manager).
You'll want to use the Open Directory Assistant in /Applications/Utilities
But be sure to read the documentation.

  • Idiots guide to making a dvd

can any body do me an idiots guide to making a dvd, just one to play on inserting into a dvd player for a short film to be shown at europes only digital cinema in hull (uk). dont need any thing fancy just so i can put it in the player it starts and i can pause it. this will give me a start for the future

Step 1: Export from FCP by going to File->Export->QuickTime Movie
Step 2: In the export window, do NOT check to "Recompress All Frames." Use "Current Settings" and include chapter markers if needed. You can make the movie self-contained or not - that's up to you.
Step 3: Import the resulting file into Compressor.
Step 4: In Compressor, choose the appropriate DVD preset for the duration of your PAL program. If needed, you can adjust the preset for video (.m2v) and audio (.AC3).
Step 5: Import the resulting two files (.m2v + .AC3) into DVD-SP as assets.
Step 6: Drag the two assets to the DVD-SP Timeline. If you included chapter markers, they'll show up on the Timeline.
Step 7: Go to the Outline tab and delete the menu.
Step 8: Right-click on the Disc and set the First Play to the track (Track 1->Track).
Step 9: Load a good quality DVD-5 disc into your DVD burner.
Step 10: Click the BURN button.

  • Please, please, please an idiots guide please!!

/Please, please, please an idiots guide please!!; I have been fannying around now for 3 days .. how the hell do I transfer a video from my videos to the Zen X-fi thru Centrale? It just does not explain how to do this, I have been clicking and trying to drag and drop for 3 days!
?Please explain in a simple , 2, 3 etc not some garbled computer jargon, I wont understand you :-( .. somebody please explain, I'm going nuts here!!
Also ... what 'format' do I change my videos to out of curiosity to work in a Zen or does Centrale do this once I sort out where I take and put my videos from ... God its confusing, please help Creative!!!

A [url="http://support.creative.com/kb/ShowArticle.aspx?sid=54748">guide [/url]already exists in the Zen X-Fi support area of the site. Did you try it's
Since I don't have a Zen X-Fi, and thus don't have or use Centrale, I can't atest to its accuracy or completeness. But at least someone took a stab at it. There also appears to be a stand-alone video converter application available in the Zen X-Fi download area.
Regarding your "format" question, that isn't easy to answer without involving the jargon you asked be avoided. Modern video "formats" aren't simple. They are basically containers that hold other things (namely the video stream and the audio stream). The video stream and audio stream are encoded separately using completely unrelated techniques. They are then bundled together under a "wrapper" like AVI, M4V, etc. Thus you need to know specifically what coder-decoders (codecs) were used to create the internal streams and what codecs the player itself supports.
An analogy can be found in chinese "buns". Externally they all look alike, but in one case the filling could be a sweet rice paste and in another it could be octopus. Knowing what's inside can make all the difference.

  • Idiots guide to installing new applications..

    to an N95
I have been looking at some of the add ons available for the N95, but I haven't got a clue how to do it.
Do I download via nokia updater? download to pc then to phone?
IME codes, where do I get one and what do I do with it?
    signed, not signed
Can someone post up a step by step idiot guide of how to do this?

I have an N95 to, and all the great applications avaibable is what makes it great. To download an app, if its made for an S60 phone, it is usually as easy as going to the web page and clicking Download.
You rarely ever need to involve your computer in installing apps as long as you can use the internet on your phone.
IME? I have no idea what that is. I never had to deal with internet access issues on my phone, just plugged in a SIM in an unlocked N95.
Heres your step by step download guide: (WidSets used as an example)
    1. Open internet and select access point on your phone
    2. Goto widsets.com
    3. Click the option that looks most likely to lead you to a download. For widsets, it is "Get Started"
    4. Click Download. For widsets it is "Download the Client"
    5. Your phone should ask "Install WidSets?" or something similar, accept these messages.
    6. Your download should begin, do not exit the progress screen saying #kB/#kB.
    7. Your application should appear into the folder your phone determined best for it. For widsets, it will be in your application folder.
    Enjoy

    Hi, Andy,
If you've written up a good step-by-step guide, it'd probably be helpful to a lot of people, so you might want to submit it as a User-contributed tip. Contributions can be submitted here, or if you can't get into that forum (I think you have to be Level 2), you can submit through the Discussions Feedback forum. Save you responding to a lot of individual emails, and help out a lot of folks.

  • Java plugin the idiots guide to installing ?

For the love of ... how do you import these java plugin in's. Every time i get a software update i need to re~download the java plugin to play Supremacy 1914. Can some one provide an idiots step by step guide to installing this software. Many thanks.

You don't say what operating system version you are on and the process may differ depending on this, however for Lion and Mountain Lion the following applies.
The latest Java update from Apple issued this week removes the Java Preferences utility from the Utility folder and also removes Java Applet support from all web-browsers.
To reinstate Java Applet support you need to go to http://www.java.com/en/download/testjava.jsp
Then click on the 'Test the currently installed version of Java' link
Then you should see a message saying Missing Plugin, click on this
You will now get a dialog box, click on the More info button
This will take you to a download webpage for the latest Mac Java software
Click the button to download the Mac Java software
This will download a disk image file
Once it has finished downloading mount the image file by opening it
In the Finder window it opens run the Java installer by double clicking on it, and then install as normal
    Quit the web-browser
Relaunch the web-browser (which forces it to load the new Java plugin)
    Visit the http://www.java.com/en/download/testjava.jsp page again
Click on the 'Test the currently installed version of Java' link again
This time it should work and show you the version proving it is working

  • Idiots guide to clean install upgrade to Snow leopard to get lion

Hi- am a total novice and have had my Imac 9,1 (2.93 Ghz Duo core processor with 4GB RAM) for a couple of years and now I am on MAC OS 10.5.8 Leopard and really want to get ready for Lion when it comes. My Imac has an external hard drive (250GB) and a time machine, airport for itunes for music streaming,  some Microsoft office suite. I bought the Snow Leopard 10.6.3 yesterday and want to clean install without losing all my docs and settings for all iphones/ipods etc. Anyone got an idea where I can find an idiot proof guide to doing this? I guess I will need to do this all again once Lion is available
    Help much appreciated...

first of all, make a backup of your boot drive by cloning it to an external HD using e.g. Carbon Copy Cloner.
then simply pop in the install DVD and click on continue. the SL installer will upgrade OS X and leave everything untouched (unless it's incompatible) - it's that simple.
in case something does go wrong, you have your clone.

  • Idiots guide to cloning OS Snow Leopard

I'm contemplating doing my first every OS upgrade to Mountain Lion, but am nervous given a fairly large number of complaints.  In trying to figure out how I would do this safely, cloning seems to be what I'm reading in these forums.  But none seem to offer a clear, step-by-step process for those of us "idiots" who are not computer saavy.
Can someone either explain in detail how to clone, where to clone to, and if you hate the new Mountain Lion, how to get your full Snow Leopard that was cloned back and your system restored to it's former state?  Of course, hopefully I'll love Mountain Lion and this will be mute.  But I need clear instructions, or a link to someone who has truly spelled it out in detail (which I'm not quite finding).
    Thanks!!

if the drive is formatted for Mac use, do I just plug it in and follow your steps?
Yes,  do the same steps, even if a few instructions overlap and the drive is already formatted.
You need to be able to boot from this drive later, so it has to be correctly formatted. We are making sure no mistakes occur.
Mac's can read and write other formats and CCC can clone to it, however later it won't be bootable which is essential for the reverse clone proceedure later or using the external drive to run older PPC based software you have.
    Most commonly used backup methods
Also since CCC copies the Recovery Partition in 10.8, paying for the license for that is essential as you can use that in 10.8 also to clone the Recovery which is neeed to download OS X on older machines with no Internet Recovery.
Yes one can make a 10.7/10.8 Recovery bootable USB, but that ties up a USB thumb drive and they are flaky anyway, also one has to use the Recovery USB FIRST to install that, then use SD to reverse clone the Macintosh HD partition, a two step process.
Where CCC will clone everything (but the Bootcamp partition) in one shot and there is WinClone for Bootcamp if you need it.
SuperDuper is only free for basic clones and won't do the Recovery or Bootcamp, the schedualing and backup feature will cost a license.
Since CCC has it all included in the price, you can chose to get the license now so you can clone the Recovery to other drives too.
It's up to you what and how you want to go about it.

  • Idiot guide to ad hoc networking....

I'll get straight to the point. I used to have and XP PC and an XP Laptop (SP2). Try as I might I couldn't an ad hoc wireless network (802.11g) working, if I was lucky I got to share an internet connection, but I'm not sure how.
I have ditched the PC and got the Mac Mini detailed below. It does have Airport Express. I managed (very easily!) to transfer the files wirelessly from the old to the new. Now, if it is possible I would like to set up a network between the Mac and the Laptop (whihc has a wireless card) to share files and the internet connection plumbed into the Mac. Everywhere I look tells me this is simple. I, however, am getting very circular.
I am an idiot. I can waft a mouse with the best of them, but don't ask me to speak of File Transfer Protocals or CAT5 cables (let alone DOG6!).
Patronise me. If you need more information, tell me where I can find it and I'll post it.
    You've all been so kind.

    Ross,
A/ Connect the Mac Mini to the internet router via a ethernet cable to establish an internet connection.
B/ Turn on Airport on the task bar at the top of your screen.
C/ Go to System Preferences/Sharing/Services & turn on Personal File Sharing, Windows Sharing & FTP Access by checking the buttons.
D/ Click on the Internet Tab (next to Services and Firewall) & where it says share your internet connection from make sure the drop down menu says Built in ethernet then click on To computers using: Airport button & finally click the Start Button (ignore the warning and continue).
E/ Scan for your Mac Mini's wireless signal & ID on the PC & connect.
    Regards
    Steve.
