  • Cannot Open Numbers Spreadsheet (Numbers on iPhone)

I have a spreadsheet that I created and regularly update on my iPhone using Numbers.
I recently upgraded to version 1.5 of the Numbers app. Since then, one of my spreadsheets won't open - tapping on the file displays the progress wheel for a second and then nothing. The spreadsheet in question is 2.3Mb and contains a large number of formulae. All of my other spreadsheets are unaffected. When I try to send it to email / iTunes, etc. I see the message 'Send "(null)" to iTunes as:'. When I tap "Numbers", the screen displays a progress bar and "Sending...", but doesn't progress any further.
I used an application to recover the spreadsheet from the iTunes backup (http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=4974), renamed the resulting .numbers-tef filename as .numbers, but when I attempt to open the document in Numbers on my Mac, I receive the message 'The index.xml file is missing.'.
I also cannot import the retrieved file to my iPhone. After uploading the recovered document via iDisk and attempting to import on my iPhone, I receive the message 'Spreadsheet couldn't be imported. Numbers only supports documents saved with iWork '09.'
I opened the .numbers package and examined the index.db file and can see that it contains my data, but just can't figure out how to either:
    get it on to my iPhone;
open it in Numbers on my mac.
Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

I received a message from the Apple team asking for a copy of the files I extracted. I have yet to hear back from them.
I did download and install the latest version of Numbers for iPhone - 1.6. The spreadsheet that I was having all the trouble with - that I had left on my iPhone -  opened after a short delay and none of my data was lost.
I was also able to email the spreadsheet to myself and transfer it to iTunes without issue.
    Problem solved!

  • Unable to open excel spreadsheet in iWork 2.2

I have just purchased iWork 2.2 and am unable to open any microsoft excel spreadsheets. Any suggestions?

    Susy,
Running Software Update might help. Numbers 2.2 is not the latest revision. Not all Excel document types are compatible. What is the extension on the file you are having trouble with?

  • Cannot open a Spreadsheet (Numbers Crash/Defect)

    Hey everybody
Some minutes ago, Numbers crashed and switched back to the Homescreen.
Nothing new so far - it happened everything hour.
BUT this Time, starting it up again, Numbers told me, that my Spreadsheet (Used just some seconds ago) cannot be opened anymore.
Also, a reboot of the iPad (iOS 3.2) couldn't change something!!!
Other - earlier created Spreadsheets - do Not have this problem at all!!! They can be opened correctly.
    What can I do?
    Can I recover my file?
Is it saved in the Backup file on my Mac because of the Sync?
Can I do something more than a reboot?
    Many Thanks in advance
    Paul

Try to sync the file with iWork.com, or E-Mail the file to yourself. You now know you have a copy of the file someplace else.
You should do a full backup/sync before doing anything else.
Delete the application from the iPad and then install it again (directly form the iPad, not using the Sync. Download it again from the App Store). Make sure the application starts up, then sync the iPad again. IF the document still won't open there are bigger issues. Try to import it from iWork or the E-Mail and that should fix it.
    Good Luck.

  • Unable to open a specific Numbers 3.2 SS  while running 3.2

I have a new replacement MBA running 10.9.3.  I have Numbers 3.2 open.  From the cloud, when I try to open one specific SS created in Numbers 3.2 I get the message that I need to get a newer version to open this SS. Of course, there is no newer version. Other SSs open fine but this one file will not open. I have opened this SS on my previous iMac and used it in 3.2 as recently as May 26/14. Any suggestions?

    Hi there tashico,
You may find the information in the article below helpful.
Upgrade notification message when opening an iWork document
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1060
    Resolution
First, check your Applications folder to see if you have an iWork folder there. If you have multiple iWork folders, or an iWork folder in addition to Pages, Numbers, or Keynote in the main level of your Applications folder, you have multiple versions of iWork installed.
If you only have one version of iWork installed on your Mac
Upgrade to a newer version of iWork to open the file.
If the file you're trying to open was sent to you by someone, you can request that the person send you a version compatible with your version of iWork. Refer the person to this article for instructions to send you a compatible iWork file.
If you have more than one version of iWork installed on your Mac:
Check to see whether a version of the iWork app is already running. If, for example, Pages '09 is already open, and you try to open a document that was created in Pages 5.1, your computer will try to open the file in the version of pages that is already running. Quit Pages '09 and try to open your document again.
Get Info on your document to make sure the correct version of the iWork app is set in the "Open With" section of the Info window. If you need to change this setting, follow the instructions in OS X Mavericks: Choose an app to open a document.

  • Why won't some of my numbers spreadsheets from my iPad open with iCloud on my Mac (Yosemite)?

Why won't some of my numbers spreadsheets from my iPad open with iCloud on my Mac (Yosemite)? When I look at the files in FiNader there's a grey bar next to the files that won't open.

I am having the same problem. Created new spreadsheet on iPad with fresh iOS and Numbers installs (3/2015) and am unable to open this spreadsheet in iCloud in Safari on MacBook Air (all current). I get the following message:
    "Sorry, something went wrong.
This spreadsheet can't be opened right now. Please try again later."
Tried reopening on Mac from iCloud and resaving; still cannot open.
Quick fix: Copying the spreadsheet content from the iPad spreadsheet to one created on the desktop recovers the ability to open it in iCloud in Safari.
    Thanks.

  • Can't open Numbers spreadsheet on iMac Yosemite

    iMac 3.2; 8gb
    Yosemite 10.10.2
    Numbers 3.5.2 (2118)
When I click on File: Open, I get a complete list of all my spreadsheets but several are greyed out and have the iCloud download symbol next to them. I can't open these spreadsheets and don't know how to start (restart?) the downloading process.
Could someone please explain what I'm doing wrong?
    Thanks

If I then again select the iCould Drive  I assume the documents will be automatically downloaded?
Yes they will, and it has never failed to do so for me. I don't blame you for being concerned though, and I strongly recommend you store backup copies on your local machine before turning off iCloud Drive. To do that you need to be able to access them first though. If you are unable to do that, you have nothing to lose.
Network conditions are unpredictable and it may take some time for the documents to download. Even under ideal conditions it takes a few moments, minimum. If Apple's services become available for whatever reason, as they did a couple of weeks ago, your documents will be irretrievable until they fix that - unless of course they are already stored on your local machine.
There have been several occasions in which iCloud Drive and related document syncing has not performed as well as I would like it to, but the overall trend has been positive. It has yet to instill complete confidence, for the reasons you described.
The Genius Desk supervisor said that there was a problem with the Store's servers and iCloud and that this would probably work when I got the machine back home and connected to my network.
Sounds like wishful thinking on their part. Did it work as they described?

  • Numbers Spreadsheets won't open, need latest version?

I'm trying to open important Numbers spreadsheets and it’s telling me unable to do it until I download the latest version of Numbers - But I  have the latest version!! Don’t know what to do next.

  • I can't open my numbers spreadsheet on my Mac, from iCloud

I save my numbers spreadsheets to icloud as I need to access them on the go.
Now that I have turned my Mac off and back on, I can't access any of my numbers spreadsheets from icloud.
When I try to open one I get an error message that says "You need a newer version of Numbers to open this spreadsheet."
    I have the latest version.
This happened a few weeks ago, and was eventually sorted when another update came through for numbers for my Mac.
But this time I waited for the updated to catch up with Australia, but I still can't open them.
I can however access then by sharing the document via icloud, but I can't use it in numbers on my Mac, and I cant save it to my Mac.
    Does anyone have any tips?

It sounds like you may have mre than one version of Numbers installed on your Mac. and that the older one is attempting to open these files.
If you were previously using Numbers '09, and upgraded to Numbers 3, the older version will still be on the Mac, enclosed in a folder named iWork '09, found in your Applications folder.
Numbers 3 will also be in the Applications folder, but not enclosed in another folder.
The two versions have different feature sets, and I would caution against removing the earlier version before ensuring that any features you have been using and that you need are supported in Numbers 3. Both versions can coexist on the same machine (and according to reports, can both be running at the same time).
To ensure that you are launching the newer version, make sure you have it's icon on the Dock, and that you use that icon to start the launch. The icons for the two versions are similar—both are vertical bar graphs in 3D format. The difference is in the number of bars—three for Numbers '09 and four for Numbers 3. Once you ahve launched the needed version, use File > Open (or File > Recent items) to locte and open the file.

  • When I try to open a spreadsheet on my Mac that I worked on with my iPhone, I get "You need a newer version of Numbers to open this spreadsheet." When I go to the App store, it says I already have it. I have v. 2.3 and can't seem to download newer version

When I try to open a spreadsheet on my Mac that I worked on with my iPhone, I get "You need a newer version of Numbers to open this spreadsheet." When I go to the App store, it says I already have it. I have v. 2.3 and can't seem to download newer version.

If you are running Mavericks, and the Mac App store says you are up to date, then you have Numbers 3.2 as well as Numbers 2.3. You are getting the "Need a newer version message because your Mac is trying to open the document using Numbers 2.3.
Launch Numbers 3, then open the document from within that app, or right click/control-click the document and choose Open with Numbers 3.x.

  • I upgraded to the new Numbers, but when I try to open an edited spreadsheet, I get this: "You need a newer version of Numbers to open this spreadsheet. You can download the latest version of Numbers from the Mac App Store." Help!

When I check for upgrades, my computer "No updates available" and says "OS X Update Version 10.9.2 installed Mar 9, 2014."
When I go to the app store to get the new Numbers, it says "installed".
I shut down and rebooted my computer, but I still get the message that says I need new Numbers to open the spreadsheet that I want to open. I can open other spreadsheets, those all work.  I just can't open the one I want.  Please help. I need the data on that spreadsheet TODAY!!!

  • Automatically open excel spreadsheets with numbers

can anyone tell me is it possible to set numbers as the default application to ALWAYS open excel spreadsheets? each time i try to open an excel spreadsheet the computer starts up the trial office software. I then have to cancel and choose "open with" and then set "always open with" numbers.
Having just converted from Windows, I was able to set certain programs to always handle specific file formats, e.g. .jpg, mpeg, avi so I did not have to choose the program every single time i wanted to open a file.
thx., same goes for pages ,in lieu of word?

Select an Excel file and option-select (Right Mouse Button) and select Get "Info". See attachment below to set "Open With."
    Regards,

  • How do I get numbers spreadsheets to open at the last entry?

I work with Numbers spreadsheets often and find it very frustrating that on opening a document it opens at the top rather than at the last place of entry. My frustration is that some of the spreadsheets I work with are fairly long and require me to then scroll down a long way to pick up the spot I want to work in. Any ideas would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks in advance

    Hi Barry,
the view scale bug was on the list for an early fix
Fixed in the latest update (Numbers 3.0.1)
Numbers > Preferences > General > Default Zoom:
And it sticks with a document after Save . Reopen shows the Saved view.

    Ian.

  • How to open Excel spreadsheet in Numbers.

    Hey Kids:
I have trouble opening imported Excel spreadsheets in Numbers on my iMac.  I have Mountain Lion 10.8.2.  Previously I tried a demo of Office Mac that has expired.  When I try to open an Excel spreadsheet I get a message to buy Office Mac.  I've tried to put the demo application in the trash but I still can't open the Excel spreaddsheet and get a message that Excel is in the trash and can't open the spreadsheet.
    HELP!

In addition to what Niel said...
In the Finder, click on an Excel file (.xls) to select it, press command-I to Get Info.
In the Info window, expand the Open with...section.
Click the pop-up menu bar in that section and choose Numbers '09.
Click the Change All button below the menu.
Repeat with a current version (.xlsx) file.
    Regards,
    Barry
PS: Unless you have something vital that you're storing in the Trash, you might also want to Empty the Trash to get rid of the Excel trial that's expired.
